I am wondering something, does anyone know is it possible to export your website content without loosing all your work and pages, posts, images, etc?

Hi Steph:). I may not be adding anything to the discussion, but it's good to see you around! I thought about you recently, and wondered how you were doing:)
Blessings:)

You can make a full backup of your website and upload it to a test site to make sure that everything has been included, before you actually export the site. ~Jude

Let us know if the advice given by Triblu was successful
seems to be sound advice .It is great learning from other member's questions

Hi Stephanie, I've never given it a thought, sorry.

I am sure it is possible, and I see that Triblu has also given you some good guidance on this.
Good luck.
Remember - site support is a great help with these kinds of things ;)
cheers - Orion

Don't it depends on where you export it to?

The only this that is applicable is if the target destination has enough space to hold the files.

Hey Stephanie,

It SURE is possible. I've done it several times... and if your website is small enough to use the WP Clone plugin, it will even change up the URL within EVERY internal link if you use the zip file to "restore" your website to a totally NEW domain name. I've done THAT several times. However, if your website is tad too big, you can use the All-in-One WP Migration: Hope this helps you.

I imported my site from another hosting company to WA. WA gave me the information on what to do and then completed it for me. I did not lose any content at all. It came over perfectly. So I'm thinking if you can import a site, you should be able to export it.

This may have to be preemptive Steph with a cloned site I would be most interested in a definitive answer!

Yep. I was thinking of that too - a "clone site" --- Thank you Mike.

One of my websites is for selling handmade Southwestern jewelry. Should do I an Etsy site to handle the ecommerce or should I go with a regular website and a WooCommerce plugi

My sister makes jewelry and sells on Etsy. She doesn't do much promotion, so her sales suffer, but Etsy is an excellent platform for handmade crafts. Also, lots of shop owners on Etsy make use of Pinterest to lure people to their Etsy stores with traffic grabbing pins.

I've added a lot of pins to my sea glass jewelry boards that are linked to Etsy shops.

I was thinking of doing that. I have a PInterest account and I was thinking of creating a new board with the turquoise jewelry that is currently on my new Etsy Shop that I just opened. I was thinking that would be a great way to get sales. Thank you so much Wendy for chiming in.

You're welcome, and turquoise jewelry with the right Pinterest pins created on Canva should get you lots of sales. Please pm me your Etsy link so I can follow your store.

I'm on the hunt for a particularly well crafted sterling silver ring with a large opal - so if you ever make anything like that, let me know. :-)

I will strongly recommend Shopify not because of its name or brand or etc but for simplicity and peace of mind which allows you to focus on selling your items. Instead of spending hours and days tweaking and testing. All your work will be automated once set up.

You can research them for more proofs and tips.

Hope this helps.

I will look into Shopify. I have heard of them and took a brief look at them a while back. But I will take another look because of your suggestion. Thank you Richard. Your recommendation is very much appreciated.

Very well then. I am glad to be of help today. I have helped a couple of store owners get on to Shopify as I am a partner their as well. Its all about understanding your specific store need so you don't waste time and money on thing you don't need.

Anyways all the best going forward and feel free to ask for help anytime.

Good question I had an Etsy account for a few years but I was more successful with my own woocommerce site.I was debating reopening my Etsy account for one product only which has been a best seller for over 20 years.

Okay. And it could be a timing thing too. Perhaps when you had your Etsy store, Etsy was too new and not enough people knew about it yet and now that they do know, you might have more success. I don't know....just thinking. Thank you for sharing your story and experience. Much appreciative.

Thanks for asking this question - I learned yet another aspect of affiliate marketing.
Good luck with your Etsy store.
Orion

Thank you Orion! I am curious about your username "SantaFez"...do you live in Santa Fe?

With a WooCommerce plugin, you'll mostly be responsible for generating the traffic to your products. With an Etsy store, you've got the advantage of being available to the millions of people who visit Etsy every month. It's worth the cut you must pay them to be on there.

FYI, Etsy has an affiliate program through Awin.com. You are still allowed to join as a store owner. If someone buys something from your store, you don't get commission, but if they click through to your store then buy something from another store, you get a commission. Worth doing for sure!

Hi Jeanine:

Oh, I like that idea of not only if I am a store owner, but I could promote Etsy in general on my website and get commissions if I join the affiliate program. Thank you for the suggestion. I think might do that. I followed everyone's advice and started an Etsy store. But I had not thought about also doing the affiliate program, but I love that idea. :)

Thank you a million Jeanine!

Steph

Hi Stephanie,

My 'lil' sister does jewelry and quite often talks about Etsy and they have been around for many years.

Monica

Thanks Monica. I appreciate the quick response. That is cool to know. I did not know they have been around for so long.

Hi Steph,

I would do it with Etsy as it is marketplace that buyers frequently visit and inherently trust.

Thank you Jay. I appreciate the quick response. I was thinking of doing a website and then have a page called "Etsy Shop" that links to my Etsy store...that way I can still write posts, etc. to develop content and link to the Etsy store. Thank you!

Can someone tell me how to override comments for individual articles? For instance, the default is to accept comments on new articles, but if you have an article that you wish

Usefull information, thanks to all of you for sharing your experience. Cheers, Jeff

Yes very useful

Simply go to the post that you want to disable comments on - once there look below the editor window and you will see the tab Discussions

This is where you can enable and disable comments for that post. To disable simply uncheck the box - I took a screenshot so you can see:

Thanks Leo. The thing is I have Divi installed and I am using Divi builder, so my WP editor looks different. I guess I need to figure out how to do it in Divi....I have a screen shot of what my editor looks like using Divi Builder.

This is the way but I just want to add that most of the time this option is hidden. To enable the "discussions" area, you first have to be in the editor window.

Then look for "Screen Option" in the top right corner and click on it to reveal the hidden settings.

Then just check the "discussions" box and you'll have that area below the editor window. To make things easier, you can drag it to the side (like where you have feature image, categories etc.) so that it's more visible.

You are awesome Jay. Thank you. Yes, the options I needed to see where hidden. I had no idea about the screen options. I saw the tab but did not think to click on it to see what was available to add. Thanks you are wonderful. I learned something new because of you today. Problem solved.

I am using Elegant Themes for some of my websites. I just launched a new website and I wanted to use one of the themes from ET or perhaps Divi (their most versatile theme) and

I've not had such problem when uploading this theme to my new website just few days ago.

You tried using Divi and you had no problem? That is interesting. I got it uploaded, but I had to use FTP. I recently blogged about it.

I though I saw a pussy cat a creeping up on me.
A black one.
Just those eyes on a dark night.

:) I tat I taw a puddy tat....

Any updates, Steph?
Just wondering for future use ;-)
Kathy

I had to use FTP and got the job done.

No. It is not WA. You are not holding your tongue right. Are you using Divi 3.0 or Divi Child?

Too funny.... first thing I'd have said is talk to the 'ol T. B.!!!

Thanks, Randy.

Thank you so much for your help and thanks for the PM. I got it worked out. I had to use FTP.

So glad you got it, Step. I would have charged you a whole hug and a half a cup of coffee. You really dodged that bullet.

Read this notice about Divi themes Steph. It might make a difference! http://www.totalrecorder.com/features.htm

Thanks Mike. That is an eye opener/

I think Divi needs to be loaded via FTP, i seem to remember it's very big. I have training on this on WA.

Okay. I will check it out. I remember in the past I did not need to do that but that may have changed since the changes that were made to WA. Thanks again! And yes, it is a large theme.

Larger themes must be uploaded by accessing your ftp files. This could be the problem.

Okay. Then my suspicious was correct. I will need to use the FileZilla FTP transfer protocol. Thanks!

Yes. I like Lady May's training the best. Very easy to follow.

I have a new theme coming and an update on my old one. Then I'm going to switch them. I'll be visiting FileZilla and my FTP files soon. :)

Hey Stephanie,

I just checked my site hosted here at WA and the "Add New" button under Appearance/Themes is still available, so if your site is missing the "Add New" button, it would be advisable for you to contact support.

My WP admin area is not missing the Add New button. I click on Add New and upload the theme and it moves great until the very end at 99% or so and then I get an error message. It happens each and every time.

I might have to do the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) way of doing this.

Steph

Ahhh ... I had a similar issue with another theme. Perhaps the theme's zip file contain more than just the theme ...or have you checked that already?

I am thinking of using Square to process transactions for my business and do away with PayPal. What are the pros and cons you have found? Cons I know o

I don't know square. So far I am fine with paypal

Thanks Heidi. I have decided to stick with PayPal for now.

Stick with Paypal :)

Thanks Tosh.

3% fee is a good start compared to PayPal's unjustified 5.4%. One question though, is Square as widely accepted as PayPal?

I agree about PayPal's fee structure being too unjustified.

Paypal is probably the largest player in the market. It is expensive to get payment from there compared to other places. but I feel that it is safe

I think you are right. It is pretty safe and pretty well known.

I think they are different. I use Square for CC processing if i am with a customer but i use paypal for the "buy now" buttons on the website. In my view Square is better for the first type of transation and money goes directly into my bank account. PayPal is better for the second type of transaction.

Another difference is that I operate physically (I dont mean online) in multi countries. The Square app will only process a CC transation if my phone is physically inside the country that my phone number and bank account is set up with in Square.

Cheers, William

Thanks William. That gives me some things to think about. I did not know much about the Square app. Excellent.

The critical question Steph is the acceptance of Square as a transaction method and if not, when it gains acceptance!

That is true. I think it is still in a state of flux right now. Too new perhaps.

I must admit that I have newer heard of Square. But I know that in 99% cases I don´t buy on sites I can´t use PayPal on because the trust I have on it, and I know that I´m not the only one.

Yep. I can see that. I know there are people who do not trust PayPal and that is why I was looking into other options for those who do not wish to pay me through PayPal.

Stick with Paypal. It is a recognised brand.

Yes it is. Thank you Duncan.

All said and done the fees are about the same. I would stick with PayPal if it were me.

Thanks. I think I might do that.

Check this out https://www.cardfellow.com/paypal-here-vs-square/

Thanks. I read your link and I appreciate the info. One thing I saw with Square is that there no credit check required. Whereas with PayPal, there is a credit & background check required and I think I like that PayPal requires that of people because that is a safety factor for sellers and buyers.

This is interesting Steph, I didn't know that PayPal did a credit & background check. I set up my PayPal so long ago, so I really don't remember the application process. To reactivate it, I just had to update my email.

I set mine up a long time ago and like you I have no memory of the application process if that was the case when I joined or not. And yes, all I had to do was update my address and I am fine.

Ya, no credit check for me either, just some banking info

That is what I think it was for me too but not sure.
