About Judebanks
Joined June 2010
My name is Jude. I live in Sydney, Australia. I am thrilled to be part of the WA community. I started to dabble online as a hobby after a friend showed me how she made money posting ads on the internet. I made a little money too. I loved it! I knew that one day I would be turning my hobby into a real business.

That day arrived! Goodbye hobby, hello business!

The 4 most important things I have learned so far in my online journey:

1. It is not enough to have knowledge. It is not enough to have skills. The real power comes from applying our knowledge and skills to achieve a purpose.

2. Learning is a lifetime journey and we get out of it what we put in.

3. None of us need to do it alone. At times we all need help, support and collaboration.

4. No one out there is waiting to give us money, or to make money for us. The only person who will create income is "you".

I am grateful to be here and look forward to contributing to the awesome WA community! ~ Jude Banks

Hi Jude,

I stumbled upon your website discussing backups and wondered if you still recommend BackWPup?

I was going to go with BackWPup however information I was finding on it was from 4 years ago, but it also ended up sounding like it wasn't an entirely reliable plugin.

Marion from WA here has training on it that says the following as well: "BackWPup does not have a restore function. Backups can only be restored using the Premium plugin or FTP."

As a result I'm still at a bit of a loss of which free plugin I should choose (which I plan on doing regularly in addition to doing the manual tools export backup as well... )

I've now also tried WPClone (another suggestion from Marion here at WA in her training) but I'm actually reading now it's *not intended for regular backups*.

I've asked Marion about this but as I haven't heard back quite yet, I thought I'd check other resources in the meantime!

If you have any updated info on Regular, Full, Daily Backups that would be awesome!

Thanks in advance for your time.

I use this plugin now and like it. Very easy to use.
https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/backupwordpress/reviews/

They have not updated the plugin for 6 months. Maybe they didn't need to. It is working fine.

I'm not concerned about the Restore - I would use FTP.

Are you hosting your sites at WA? If so, they do daily backups.

I backup mine once weekly - just in case all else fails. I've never had to use it. On 2 occasions Site Support restored my site when I was messing with code and crashed it...lol. Their daily backup is always more up to date than mine.

If you are hosting at WA, you might consider asking Site Support what they recommend. If you do that, please let us know what they say.

Thank you for the heads up about my blog post - I'll update it.

Hi Jude,

Great to hear from you, thanks!

Thanks also for the link to Backup WordPress -- will definitely be checking that out as I sort through all these plugins and what they all do!

I loved the thorough post on your site about the importance of backing up! Do you happen to have further information on your site about using FTP or that explains why both are needed?

The thing I liked about your post on your site was that you combined a common technical issue (backups) with a personal story (e.g. when you lost your data) which made it way more relatable. Thanks for that.

Yes, we're hosting at WA - and that's a great idea to ask Site Support what they recommend for backup plugin! I just looked up how to reach them so I'll get out my (detailed) question and let you know what they say :)

With regard to your blog post -- sorry for the misunderstanding! In my earlier message to you I was making reference to OTHER sites that had older info on backups, I didn't mean to make it sound like I was including yours in that bunch!!

Again, your story-telling skills made reading about techy stuff easier to read and understand!

Thanks for the kind feedback, tresj.

You do not need a plugin if you use the WP export tool for the main content of your website. That is the priority.

The difference with a backup plugin is that you can schedule backups and it includes the theme and plugin files, which the export/import tool does not.

Theme and plugin files are easy to replace. Content is your hard work and that can be saved without plugins.

Loes has a quick tutorial at the link below. She includes a link to Marion's training on how to use FTP. ~Jude

Thanks so much Jude for your extra time to educate me on this!

I'm beginning to understand more thanks to you and how you've broken it down above (and I'll take the opportunity now as well to also thank other gracious WA Members who have responded to my many queries about all of this!)

I will watch Loes' tutorial as an extra layer of knowledge that I'm tucking away (where, I don't know at this point, but I'm determined to retain it all somehow!)

Thanks again, and by the way, when I contacted Site Support and had named all the backup plugins I was considering (BACKwpUP, WPClone, WPMigration, BackupWordPress, UpDraft, ManageWP, it ended up being BACKwpUP that Site Support recommended.

They've said that even though BACKwpUP doesn't have a restore feature (as @MarionBlack had mentioned in her tutorial), that it would be best to create a ticket through them in case a restore is ever needed.

This definitely brings with it a nice element of peace of mind, so I've decided to start out with BACKwpUP and possibly progress from there if / when needed, but at least I know I'm covering the basics (?)

Would be interested in any further thoughts you'd have on that if you care to share!

Have a great Sunday~

P.S. I realized I could have perhaps sent a personal msg about all this however it's possible i tcould lead to light bulbs for others in their own backup journey!? I can delete these posts (I think) if you'd like though. :)

I used BackWpUp at one time. It's good. But I was storing the zip files on Dropbox (away from my computer) and WA does not, or did not at the time, enable cURL, which is an external connection.

It's no issue if you store to your computer or a separate drive.
Plus you will have a full backup in a zip file.

Backup is like health insurance. You do it but you hope you never have to use it...lol. You would need it if you move your hosting account to a new host. Then that zip folder will be necessary. Don't even think about it...lol!!

No need to delete your post here. As you say, it could help someone else.

Thank you for letting me know. Glad you found the solution.

Thx Jude, I agree about the insurance -- it's totally like that. I feel better now that I've started!

Jude, may I ask you one question, before I decide to go premium?

How do I get advertisements on my website and if I do, how does the commission get paid to me?

I am a practical guy, and just want to understand how would the money being paid for a product be linked with my website and then linked to my bank account or any other account?

First you build out your website based on your niche.

Next, you learn how to drive traffic to your website.

After traffic starts to flow, you would join an affiliate program that is relevant to your niche. For example google search for Hunting + Affiliate Programs, or Christianity + Affiliate Programs, or whatever niche you decide.

Those affiliate programs will give you affiliate links with your tracking ID. Then you will monetize your website with your affiliate links.

When someone visits your site and buys the product by clicking through to the product payment page from your link, you will earn a commission and will be paid by that affiliate program.

This is all explained in the training going forward. ~Jude

Thank you, Jude, that is exactly what I wanted to know. I will then focus on getting traffic to my website, which as I understand might take a lot of time and I should not give up too soon.

I will go premium as soon as I feel that my niche, writing style, keyword finding methods etc. is actually working. I might be terrible at this and pay money for something I will be never able to do.

Thanks again for your answer. I appreciate your help.

That's fine. I've met many members who stayed on the Starter membership for a few months before they upgraded to Premium. You need to do what is right for you.

It can be challenging to work alone without access to the community. You will be able to use the WA search bar to find answers, and the majority of tutorials prepared by members are available to Starter members.

This post might help: ~Jude

Hello, Jude:
Im a nuby and Im looking for an experienced WA member willing to give me a bit of tuition (paid) on how to start making money (a little) right away while keeping up with the study here at WA.
I have two sites and need to be taught the last few touches to ready them for affiliate marketing.
Would that be convenient for you?

Hello Phil, thanks for the follow and connecting with me.

I'm honored that you have asked me, but giving private tuition one-on-one is not my thing.

Now that I'm following you, I will see your questions when I'm in the community and will be glad to help you out when I can.

Are you hosting your sites at WA, and have you used the Site Feedback system?

If you wish to send me the links to your sites, I'll be glad to take a look at them tomorrow and give you some pointers. ~Jude

Jude, we are trying to post our domain fatquartershopping.com on Facebook. We can not get the page verified without having a document like a light bill, or Corporation, tax I.D. We have no intention of Incorporating . We must have one of the requirements in order to get our page verified. Any suggestions?

Jude sorry that I did not give this link to you. We are just starting it.

That link does not work for me.

First you must have a personal account and a personal profile set up on Facebook.

After that you should be able to create a business page from within your account.

For the category, unless you have a brick and mortar local business and your page is specifically for that, do not select that local category (unless you are prepared to give the verification details requested).

Instead select the category - Company, Organization, Institution.

Then follow Steph's training. Use a large screen to view her training. Notice how she adds the website URL near the end.

Steph: Hope that helps. ~Jude

Hi Jude.

Good to meet a fellow Sydneysider.

Congratulations for being in the top 200.

I have been on the Internet and thinking of making money with it for about 20 years now. That's terrible, isn't it.

I was offered a course from someone. I visited his website and found it was Warriors website. That put me off as I have found that giving one Warriors member your email address means a lot of other Warriors members get it. Out of curiosity, I Googled "Alan Says", the founder of the Warriors forum and was somehow led to Jay Neil's website. I think he sponsored me into Wealthy Affiliate. Anyhow I am in.

I noticed you are quite active on Jay's profile page.

You seem to be doing well and I hope you continue to do well.

All the best,
Frank
