Hey there, my name is Monica!

I'm a PADI Open Water Scuba Dive Instructor. I love meeting and helping people experience the true beauty underwater. I started scuba diving in 1983.

Some people may not feel comfortable about learning how to scuba dive yet have a yearning or curiosity about what they will experience or see in the water. Perhaps they feel they are not strong swimmers, maybe they have issues like equalizing their ears in the water or the fear of sharks close by. I'm here to give as many helpful tips and information as possible thru my experiences.

Some other things I love doing are downhill skiing, swimming, kayaking, hiking, reading books, listening to music, piano, electric guitars, learning, cooking and travelling.... of course... I love computers too...

It's exciting having my own online business. I started researching a couple of years ago looking for online business ideas. I've always known people were making an honest living this way. I'm so very grateful to have found Wealthy Affiliate!

The best part having an online business is that I can work on my online business anywhere in the world as long as I have internet and laptop available. How cool is that?

People ask 'So... am I living the dream?'Oh yes indeed I am!!

Connecting with a lot of friendly and knowledgeable people here is a huge asset and it seems the best place to be to get a successful online business.

I look forward to helping everyone here too!! Best to you all!

Hi Crystal, nice to meet you! Thanks for adding me to your Network. I scuba dive but had a silly mask squeeze and it gave me 2 black eyes so I’ve been scared ever since. Lol :) And I know how basic that was for me not to remember to release the pressure. :)

One day I’ll get back to it. It’s absolutely beautiful under water. The colors are so vivid, they almost look fake...

Thanks again!

Hi Monica.

Thanks for the positive response to my invitation to join my network. I really feel privileged. I am truly encouraged by your bio and confirms my belief that WA is the place for success. All I have to do is do the work, at whatever pace. And I am doing just that: at a pace dictate by other commitments that sustain my living. As soon as that is replaced by income from WA, I will be fully here to “live my dreams” one of which is to follow the summer!

Awesomeness!

Hello Monica ... thank you for the follow. Very impressive website. Is that the result of your Cert Training or did you already have it developed before WA?

Either way you should do very well with it. Your passion for the subject is very obvious.

Thank you Dennis! My dive site is a result of my Certification Training here. When I joined Wealthy Affiliate I had absolutely no knowledge of how to make a website. Lots of work trying to understand but it's slowly 'sinking' in. I've put long hours in.

I wish you the very best here and much success too in your online business. Have fun learning... oh and yes, take regular breaks and exercise. We can all be successful!!

Hello Monica, thank you for following me. I also enjoy scuba but I am not certified. I have gone diving several times in Hawaii. Downhill skiing, cooking and traveling are also interests of mine.

I used to be afraid of sharks but I took a graduate course on sharks as part of my Master's Degree program so I understand them much better now.

I hope you are doing well here at WA.

Hi Jessica... Alaska must be beautiful and I'm sure downhill skiing is exceptional there. I do some downhill skiing in Banff, Alberta.

I wish I was able to learn about sharks the way you did... in my time, it wasn't even offered ...

Yes, all is going well here and I made my first sale last September and still learning.

Hopefully I will become an Ambassador like you...

Have an awesome 2018!

Thanks Monica. Yes, the skiing is gorgeous since our main resort around here (Alyeska) is right on Turnagain Arm which is part of Cook Inlet north of the Gulf of Alaska. With the ocean right there and the mountains rising straight up the views are stunning!

Nice to know that you are a scuba diver. Well, once me and my wife went to andaman and nicobar islands in India. I was afraid to go under water though my wife went and did.

But I think you need to be brave to go underwater. Cool and Great that you love that sport.

Hi Rajesh,

Thank you and I look forward to following you!

I actually did the PADI Open Water Scuba Dive Certification twice. The first time was a mask issue for me and a fear of the unknown... I did only 5 dives then. After 10 years, I did the course over again and totally fell in love with the sport. I knew what to expect on my dives. It seems I usually have to do things over a second time to get my confidence...

I hope you will give the scuba diving a try... go for the PADI Discover Scuba Dive Course someplace warm, calm water... . It's an introduction and absolutely a lot of fun. It's very peaceful and the life underwater is amazing and so beautiful!

Best to you here in Wealthy Affiliate!

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Hi Kyle,

Thank you for your message. I was watching your live video not long ago and I think you mentioned it was ok to change out existing niche if it was not our passion. My real niche - my target audience is scuba divers.

I decided to make a new website on my passion in scuba diving.

On my site, I want to have content on:

- reviews and recommendations on dive gear including dive cameras
- hook up with an affiliate like Amazon and an actual dive gear shop to market dive gear products
- discuss different dive locations around the world
- give tips on diving

I have chosen 4 Domain Names and can't decide which one to choose. I'm looking for your advice or if neither are appropriate .... any suggestions?

1. Experience Scuba Diving
2. The Joys Of An Underwater Explorer
3. The Joys of Scuba Diving
4. How To Get The Ultimate Experience Scuba Diving

I put this out to the members and the consensus was number 1. I'm adding the word 'joys' so my Domain Name would be...

'experiencethejoysofscubadiving.com'

Does this sound good and applicable to my desired content? Do you have other thoughts?

*Another question... I have been doing the Affiliate Bootcamp but have been struggling on my writing skills... it takes me literally forever to write and I want to get better on writing ... I feel I don't have confidence in this niche... I am going to keep working on this as I'm only on Course 5, Lesson 9 but the writing of 6 articles kind of threw me back...I'm not giving up on this Affiliate Bootcamp. Just feeling I need to get confidence back and do something I'm familiar with... which is scuba diving...is this OK to switch??

Thank you Kyle and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Best!

Your niche ideas are definitely viable directions for your niche. You need to choose one when starting out, what are you most passionate about?

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

Hi Kyle,

Thank you for responding back to me!

Good idea on the question but I have several answers to the question (see below)... Am I limited to having just one answer? I have listed 5 here ... so this means I have more than one specific audience correct?? What do I do if I want to cover all 5? However, you do mention that I should just choose one when starting out... does that mean I can cover all 5 eventually on the same site?

1. I want to help people make decisions on choosing dive gear and underwater cameras. (I'm thinking I can do this with reviews and recommendations)

2. I want to help people scuba dive with safety in mind.

3. I want to help people equalise their ears when scuba diving. (This would be in the form of tips.)

4. I want to help people feel comfortable underwater and not feel afraid... i.e. mask and breathing issues, sharks, etc.

5. I want to help people who have health issues like arthritis, stress, disabled .... to know that they can be a scuba diver.

Not sure I'm getting the idea Kyle... Yes, I really would appreciate your help on this.

Thanks Kyle!

Those would all be "articles" on your site. Your audience would be people that are looking to learn how to scuba dive.

Perhaps Scuba for Beginners could be your niche. Become a Scuba Diver.

Something of this nature could be an appropriate direction here.

I'm sorry to bother you again...can you just help me out on my potential categories on my home page? I'm on the Get Started Course 1, Lesson 8.

I have chosen the following and wondering if these are good ones:

• Benefits of Scuba Diving
• My Personal Reviews (these would be dive locations and dive gear)
• Scuba Dive Courses
• Scuba Tips (examples would be equalising ears, nausea..)
• Shopping for Dive Gear (gear and accessories to sell thru affiliates)
• Packages (dive packages, accommodation like my house in Turks & Caicos)
• Best Dive Vacations
• Resources (example - video of how to assemble dive gear..)

So as I understand, these would be my categories?

I started building out my intial website framework using content themes for my niche and they are:

• Tips
• Courses
• Reviews

I wrote content for the above lesson ‘Building Out Your Website Theme-Based Content’.

Can you please check my website and content of ‘joyofscubadiving.com’ site and see if I’m doing that right?

At what stage will I be using pull-down menu on my home page?

The other question I’m wondering about is if ‘Tips’ , ‘Courses’ and ‘Reviews’ are too general. I’m wondering if I should do keyword research to find something more appropriate.

I’m not sure I understand the purpose of content themes… are they more like a description to describe what I will be talking about under those themes ?

I asked for feedback and the response I received seems to be confusing… therefore all my questions here.

Thank you Kyle! I know you’ll get my ‘thinking’ straightened out.
Reply
Kyle Premium
You can use a pull down menu at any time that you like.

You can add these custom menus to organize your top menu in any way in which you like, as well as create sub-menus (for themes that will support this). You can also use these custom menus to add within your side widgets on your website (within your sidebar).

Here is a tutorial on how to create custom menus: I use custom menus on all of my websites (over-ride that default menu). It allows much more control and organization....both good things!

Nice work on your initial framework here Monica, you are definitely off and running and heading in the right direction here. ;)

Hi Kyle,

Thank you again for your help! I just looked at the tutorial on how to create custom menus and just going to do now. Leo did a great tutorial and I thanked him.

Thank you too on your comment on my initial framework... I just wanted to be sure and not go off in the wrong direction.

So, the way I understand this is the initial contents I created can remain and I can put sub-menus with content under the themes of 'Tips', 'Courses' and 'Reviews'?

If I create posts, are they better to be under the pages of my themes?

Thank you Kyle!

Yeah, you could definitely do that. Do what makes sense in terms of navigation for your audience, so what logically would make the most sense in terms of navigation. This will evolve over time as you build out your website.

Hi Kyle,
How are you and your family doing?

I'm lost ... I found an affiliate program for my scuba dive site but they use AvantLink. I gave them all the information they asked for but now they're looking for my site confirmation and want me to do one of the following:

• JavaScript placement verification: An affiliate application can be confirmation by placing a JavaScript call on the homepage of your website and then letting AvantLink verify that the script has been placed on the page. As soon as that step is complete you may remove the line of JavaScript - you won't need it again. The exact procedure for using the JavaScript placement verification is as follows:
Method 1:
(1) Copy the JavaScript from AvantLink from the first link in the email we sent you.
(2) The JavaScript can be placed in one of the following places:
(a) Locate your homepage. This is probably named "index.html" or "index.php" in your web root directory (likely to be named "public_html"). You may need to check with your host to determine what file this is. Paste the JavaScript anywhere in that file and save the file to your web server.
(b) Paste the JavaScript anywhere within the template that is used on the homepage of your site. This is especially useful if your website is a blog. If your website is a blog, you may also place the JavaScript within a post that will be shown in full on the homepage until we are able to verify that it is there.
(3) Browse to the second URL we sent in the email to verify the placement of the JavaScript.
(4) If your application confirmation was successful, you can delete the JavaScript from your homepage or template.

Method 2: File upload verification: An affiliate application can be confirmed by uploading a small text file to your website and then letting AvantLink verify the existence of that file. As soon as that step is complete you may delete the verification file - you won't need it again.
The exact procedure for using the file upload confirmation is as follows:
(1) Download the verification file from AvantLink from the link in the email we sent you.
(2) Save this file to your local computer as "avantlink_confirmation.txt".
(3) Using an FTP program, upload the "avantlink_confirmation.txt" file to your website so that it can be accessed as "yoursite.com/avantlink_confirmaiton.txt".
(4) Browse to the URL provided in the email we sent, to verify the presence of the file.
(5) If your application confirmation was successful, you can delete the "avantlink_confirmation.txt" file from both your website and your local computer.

Yikes... which is the best method for me to do? Also how do i find my 'index.html' or 'index.php' also 'public_html'.

Pretty Greek to me...can you please help me on this? Or advice...

Thanks Kyle!

Kind Regards,
Monica

You find this within your actual code, which is found within your Editor.

If you go to:

Appearance => Editor => Header.php

Within your WP back office, you will be able to edit the code and you will see this code there. Then you can add the AvantLink code that is given to you just after the <header> tag, add it to a new line. Just make sure you do not delete anything within the code as it can break your site.

Hope this helps you out and if you need any further help, let me know.

<link rel="profile" href="http://gmpg.org/xfn/11">
<link rel="pingback" href="<?php bloginfo( 'pingback_url' ); ?>">

<?php wp_head(); ?>
</head>

I paste the AdvantLink at the end of </head>??
Reply

Yeah, exactly. Paste it after the </head>

Just make sure you don't delete any of the other code.

Yeeaaaa ... thank you Kyle...the JavaScript went thru successfully and now I'm waiting to get approved by AvantLink. Hopefully I do...

One more question... I just filled out the US Tax info on Amazon Associates should I have filed under a corporate company (numbered company in Alberta which I do have) or as an individual? So I will have to pay income tax to US government?

Going forward....I appreciate your help!!

Hi Kyle, sorry to bother you on Easter weekend!!

I have a friend who just signed up as Premium...yeehaaa!

She is wondering how to transfer her site from Go Daddy to Wealthy Affiliate...

I popped a question and found a member gave an answer and wondering is this the way to go?? I'm asking because I'm not sure if this is for Go Daddy...

If that is a WordPress site, then yes, it can be moved. Perform the steps in this order:
1) Back up the files using WPClone or a similar plug-in.
2) Make sure you know where the files are stored and how to restore them from the backup.
3) Update the DNS at your current registrar.
4) Once the DNS propagates (2-72 hrs), create the new site in SiteBuilder here on WA (pick any theme, and upload the plug-in you used for backup).
5) Restore your files to your site.

If this is correct, then she can get the WPClone plugin from Dashboard correct?

How will she know where the files are stored?

How does she restore them?

What is DNS and what is current registrar? How does she find her current registrar?

I'm 'trying' to help her... but all this I don't understand?

Thank you Kyle!!

Happy Blessed Easter to and your family!!

Glad to help your friend here Monica. (they can also reach out to me and ask for help).

It is quite a manual process to move a website to WA, but it can be done if it is a Wordpress based site.

You would have to follow these steps:

(1) Download your content locally
(2) Update your domain DNS settings to point to WA. Here are the DNS settings.

ns1.mywahosting.com
ns2.mywahosting.com

(3) Build a website here at WA using the website builder.
(4) Transfer your content over to WA

This is a very manual process and it can be done, but I don't recommend doing it if you have an established high ranking website, I don't usually recommend moving it.

If you need any further help, let me know.
Reply
mbouteiller Premium
Thanks Kyle, but how does she do her website work here in WA using her Go Daddy site if she doesn't transfer?
Reply
Kyle Premium
If her hosting is there, then she will simply follow the training but obviously realize that the site is hosted elsewhere. That is up to her.

Ideally they would host on the platform here, which is industry leading and comparable to $250 per month hosting platforms.
Reply
mbouteiller Premium
Thank you Kyle!

Just so I understand this for her and for myself...

1) To transfer her Go Daddy website (WordPress) to Wealthy Affiliate is not a procedure you would recommend.

2) She continues to work on her website at Go Daddy and simply follow the training inside Wealthy Affiliate.

3) For her to host on Wealthy Affiliate platform would mean having to create a new website under SiteRubix.com. When she's ready to have this new website under her own domain name she can do that here by that simple transfer you set up in Site Builder. (Which is what I did on mine...).

Is all this correct? Wow...I'm learning a lot!

Thanks Kyle!!
Reply
Kyle Premium
She would have to back up her website, change the DNS to point to the hosting here, then create a website here and upload all of the content.

If it is an established site, I usually don't recommend it as it can represent all sorts of issues.

Questions:

1. When I go to SiteRubix's Feedback and give Feedbacks to the members requests, I've noticed lately that instead of giving me credit on Feedbacks, it gives me credits on Comments .... is that the way it's supposed to go?

2. If you don't mind can you please take a peak on my joyofscubadiving.com What I'm wondering about is:

a) Would my site look better if I create a Home page and move my posts to the top menu area as pull downs? OR does it look better as blog rolls leaving everything as is?

b) Do you know what I'm doing wrong on my blog rolls... the top two blogs don't have that 'Read more..' thing way on the left side. I think the first 2 blog posts are correct but I don't know what's causing the other posts to show the 'Read more...' way on the left side. How do I correct these?

I hope I'm making sense...

Sure, happy to help here:

1. When I go to SiteRubix's Feedback and give Feedbacks to the members requests, I've noticed lately that instead of giving me credit on Feedbacks, it gives me credits on Comments .... is that the way it's supposed to go?

You can use these credits for either comments of feedback, they can be shared between the two platforms.

2. If you don't mind can you please take a peak on my joyofscubadiving.com What I'm wondering about is:

a) Would my site look better if I create a Home page and move my posts to the top menu area as pull downs? OR does it look better as blog rolls leaving everything as is?

Your header images are far too large and takes away from your actual content. People need to scroll down in order to see your content. The visuals and the relevant imagery should be placed directly inside your content instead of a static and overwhelming header that shows on every page.

I would either minimize this or remove it altogether, it is not offering any value to your end user and is impacting their experience in a negative way.

b) Do you know what I'm doing wrong on my blog rolls... the top two blogs don't have that 'Read more..' thing way on the left side. I think the first 2 blog posts are correct but I don't know what's causing the other posts to show the 'Read more...' way on the left side. How do I correct these?

Your blog roll looks fine, and read more style blog posts are great on your homepage. So you actually want that, no issue there. :)

Thank you Kyle, I deleted the featured images because I understand what you're saying on these taking away from my content. They were too big I agree.

Thanks too on explaining how the credits work on comments and feedbacks.

I saw in one of your Certification training where you were showing how to put featured image in a post and was hoping to do it that way. I think the Poseidon theme which I use recommends for a large header image which I guess the featured images just replaces the header image and makes it the large size.

Do you know of any themes you can recommend to me that would give me the ability to show a featured image beside my posts on home page ... and when the reader clicks on the post that featured image won't show up in as header image?

Thank you for your help!
Reply
Kyle Premium
Most themes will allow for featured images on the homepage, it is pretty rare that a theme doesn't have featured images on the homepage.

So there isn't any particular one that I would recommend simply because it is pretty rare that I don't see a theme operate in this way.

Hi Kyle, sorry to bother you again. I've been trying to figure this out since Friday. It's to do with Webmaster Tools and Search Console. I keep getting the error message 'Empty Sitemap Your sitemap does not contain any URLs. Please validate and resubmit your Sitemap'. I'm sure it's something easy but I've tried so many things...here's the last thing I just did...

I added a New Property under Website ‘https://joyofscubadiving.com/’

Chose Alternate methods
Clicked on HTML tag
Copy my meta tag
Back to dashboard => All in One SEO => General Settings and scrolled down to Google Webmaster Tools and pasted the long meta tag and deleted everything except for what was in between “”
Clicked Update Options
Back to Search Console and clicked in the red Verify
Received ‘Congratulations…’
Clicked Continue
Crawl => Sitemaps and No sitemaps found for this site which is fine.
Clicked red Add/Test Sitemap
Under the Add/Test Sitemap it shows ‘https://joyofscubadiving.com/(blank box)
Entered ‘sitemap.xml’
Clicked Test
Click View test result

Then I get that error message. Can you please help me? What am I doing wrong?

Hi Kyle, thanks for getting back to me! I followed your video training 'Setting up submitting a sitemap to Google' and I'm pretty sure I did everything right... I installed and activated the Google XML Sitemaps to the lesson.., isn't that the way to setup my SiteMap? Is there another step to go in Google-XML Sitemaps?

I went back into late last night and I did the following below...

Back in Dashboard on Settings => XML – Sitemap (Google’s plugin)
I see ‘Search engines haven’t been notified yet’. Write a post to let them know about your sitemap. Notify Search Engines about your sitemap or your main sitemap and all sub-sitemaps now. If you encounter any problems with your sitemap you can use the debug function to get more information.

When I click in my ‘The URL to your sitemap index file is: https://joyofscubadiving.com/sitemap.xml.’. I get the error message ‘This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.’

I initially started with the All In One SEO's XML Sitemap but I got the same error there. That's why I decided to try Google XML Sitemaps.

I have another problem just now... I just went into Rubix Site Manager to finish off a post but when I click into my username, it comes up with 'not found' and I cannot get into my Dashboard.

ummm I have not idea what I'm doing wrong... lol.. 2 things now.. I hope I haven't messed up my site...please help me Kyle!!

Hi Kyle,

Everything is working fine now. I went to Site Support and they fixed the issues. They said it was a 'A duplicate sitemap file was present in httpdocs'. I went into Webmaster Tools after they fixed it and into Sitemap and did the test and submitted and no errors.

I'm also able to login from Site Rubix Site Manager into my site!

Yea.. all is fantastic!!

Hi Kyle, I'm sorry to bother you. I put a question to Site Support and haven't heard back and wondering if you can help me.

For my Super Affiliate training, I decided I wanted to use an old website called makemoneybecomewealthyaffiliate.com. I haven't used it awhile. I tried to update WordPress version but it errored and came up with message cURL error 7. I also tried to update my plugins, the first one errored as well.

How do I fix this?

Thank you Kyle

Arrrrggg... Hi Kyle, I think I had brain freeze this morning. Already...

I was watching the Super Affiliate Training, the one you sent to my email, mboute7@gmail.com ... I think I accidentally did something to it this morning and now I can't find it.

Can you please resend email back so I can see the video again and also read up on the comments in there?

You said something about changing my domain name? How do I do that. Can I also transfer my articles?

I have around 30 articles and my site trust in that makemoneybecomewealthyaffiliate.com is 100% which is why I want to keep it.

I'm glad you brought that to my attention about looking 'biased'... I should have thought about that.

Thank you Kyle and I appreciate your help!

Regards,
Monica

Hi Kyle,

I'm sorry to bother you again. Can you please give me advice on these? I believe I have Keyword stuffing.... I was watching your video in the Super Challenge Month 2 and you were talking about keywords...the list below are what I have written, some awhile back...

Hello Monica,♫Welcome! Nice to meet you ツ I wish you a lot of learning pleasure and fun on WA. Thank you for following me.

From the start, I have written training for every issue I had problems with myself. I also made a list of 1001 niche ideas, a checklist with 25 points to go through before you publish a post, 101 blogging ideas when you get stuck and an A-Z WA dictionary. I just love lists:) It has been very helpful to a lot of people. I have listed them in one blog you can find on my profile. It's the first website link on the right (click on my picture to get there). I hope to help you with those.

If you have any questions, please add a comment to this message or leave them on my profile.
Success building your business in 2016. See you around, Greetings Loes

Hi Loes, I really need some help but unsure of where to begin. I will definitely look at your checklist with 25 points to go through before publishing my posts. That will be helpful.

Thank you and Yes I will put comments in!

Hello Monica and welcome to wealthy affiliate.
You have been here since last year so have probably realised by now that internet marketing can be a steep learning curve.
Can I suggest you browse some more of the 200+ blogs I have published within WA.
Thank you for the follow as well and I will follow you.
Remember, if you get stuck you ask ok.
Curious - why did you decide to follow me after all this time?
Enjoy your day.

Yes indeed, a huge learning curve, but i'm enjoying everything here. I'm not great at writing though...arrrggg! It takes me awhile to write even one.

Why did I decide to follow you after all this time? My answer is you responded to my question. You took the time to answer and I'm very grateful you did. I used to follow a lot of people but that seemed to take a lot of time and get too involved and not get any writing done.

Your writing skills are excellent!
Have an awesome week Robert!

Hi Again Monica.
I answer lots and lots of questions (they are never-ending) so glad to help you out if I actually did.
You have to be aware that you will get lots of replies to anything you ask even if its the time of day lol.
A lot of the time the answers you get are useless but people will reply to everything so they can boost their WA rank.
This wont do them any good whatsoever, it certainly wont earn them any money and that is and should always be their first priority.
Anyway, cut a long story short. If you get stuck ask people who have been members for at least a year then you can be sure they have been where you are now and the chances they will be able to help or point you in the right direction are greater than if you're relying on others who have only been here a short while.
They may think they're helping but in actual fact a lot of the time they are just confusing you more than you already are.
I'm not being nasty saying this - its a plain and simple fact.
Enjoy your day.

No probs Monica and as you have been here a wee while yourself I'm sure you are quite capable of separating the wheat from the chaff as we say in farming circles.
You have an awesome day as well.
You get stuck - you ask ok!
