Hello, my name is Wendy. I"m a very tired school teacher who dreams of building her own online empire in her spare time. I'm three years away from retiring from the NYC school system, and I know a teacher pension by itself is not going to give me the kind of financial freedom I want for myself.

I've done quite a bit of freelance content writing over the last few years. I've been told I'm pretty good at it. What trips me up is the technical end. I keep wanting to get those websites built, but never quite get around to it. I ran into WA about 10 years ago and joined for awhile, but life got in the way, so I stopped.

I'm more focused and committed now to doing the work and learning required to do online marketing properly. I figure since WA has now been around for so long - and they obviously care about the success of their members - this is the best place for me to be.

Hi Wendy:

I want to stop by and give you a personal thank you for your advice and suggestion on going with Etsy. I read your profile and I too am a teacher and librarian. I worked as a school librarian and I worked in special education. And you are right about a teacher's pension. What a joke right? So yes, I am like you and wanting to secure a future with a nice financial freedom to do what I really want. Thanks again!

Thanks for following me, Wendy.

I have found the WA community to be a breath of fresh air.

I have tried many career paths in the last 10 years but I always come back to internet marketing. The dream of making an income proportional to my effort has always been in the forefront of my mind.

With WA I'm gaining knowledge I haven't experienced before and I love the community interaction to stay motivated. Community connection is what my past programs lacked.

Thanks for reaching out to a newcomer.

Hiya :) I met you on a comment thread and then saw that you had followed me. I too started with WA awhile ago and then had life get in the way for a long time. I totally understand.

I started a few projects here over the past few years and didn't like the direction I was going with them, so I put them aside.

In between, I have studied other places similar to WA as well. They have made a ton of improvements to this platform since then.

Recently, they added Jaaxy as part of the platform and made the lite version free which drew me back.

So I guess, I'm going to just start a new project and begin fresh again.

Anyways, glad to meet you :)

I'm glad you came back. The lessons are step-by-step and assume that you know nothing, which was good for me!

Thanks for following me. I'm following you back.

My plan is to retire in 5 years with Wealthy Affiliate providing enough passive income to supplement my Social Security income.

I don't have any aspirations like traveling when I retire. I just want to be able to retire and read books all day.

That's my passion. And that is one of my niches. I review books that I read and then I grab the Affiliate link from Amazon. If someone buys one of the books I get a small commission from Amazon. I read about a book a week. So it is a good niche for me.

Debra.

Sounds like a good plan, reading all day. How I would love to read a book a week. With my teaching job I'm lucky if I can get through a few pages a week. I'm so tired by the end of the day.

Good day to you Wendy, my name is Ken and I welcome you back to WA and thank you for the follow. I'm following you back. My goal once I found WA in 2014 was to gain skills and knowledge to build an online 'self-preserving' income. I read Robert Allen's book "Multiple Streams of Internet Income" which lit a fire within to learn to navigate the online world in seeking extra income, wherever that may be. I fell flat on my face a few times before learning about WA, so my endeavors now are to continue to build a sustainable income long after I retire, which is growing ever closer.
I look forward to working with you and wish you much success in your online journey.

Hello Wendy ... thank you for the follow. Your strength is creative writing and I think I read in one of your blogs that you teach computers. So what's the technical end that trips you up?

Is it Word Press or just the whole Affiliate Marketing skill set? What ever ... it will pass. The cool thing about this training platform is it's accumulative.

Diligently doing the training (and the tasks) will take you up the steep learning curve and you will soon realize you kind of know what you are doing.

The learning never stops, but once you get here success is determined by your strength ... creative writing. And yea ... lots of it. But now you are in control.

I see a bright future for you and I wish you the best on your WA journey.

Thank you. As I go through the training, I think I know more than I realized. It's the sheer amount of details to running an effective website that can get a little intimidating. But you are right, it is cumulative.

The community here also posts great training, including some valuable checklists. So it's all good. :-)

Thank you for your kind words.

thanks for following me. my cousin was a principle in the NYC school system. was already retired and working with a company marketing books to schools. passed away from a massive heart attack 10 years ago which is ironic because from the time he was a kid and continued to work out with weights over the years.

the problem was he refused to see the doctor and take care of his health and I understand he fainted a few times so he had warning signs and refused to do anything about it
Reply
wendyg53 Premium
It is not uncommon for people to have a pathological fear of doctors. It's a phobia, but as you experienced with your cousin, it's a deadly phobia. The fact that he fainted and didn't seek medical help shows just how fearful he must have been. What a shame. :-(
Reply

that and other issues he kept buried and never talked about that were psychological. he was totally wild as a kid and very dependable as an adult. when he was a teenager he would spend his time in the gym to get away from his home, then got married to someone that threatened suicide if he broke up with her, just to get out of his parents home. then after he divorced he lost all contact with his 2 daughters.

I'm sure a lot of that also played into it. if he'd of wanted to live he would have sought help instead of using the excuse that his mother died of a brain tumor and he wouldn't go to a doctor

my grandmother is lucky none of her children had nervous breakdowns but had several grandchildren that did--I know she didn't have it easy as a child but what she did to my grandfather and her children wasn't good either.

We have come a long way from then in psychology and acknowledging abuse.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

Thanks for checking in Kyle. I think I am going to go with a niche I've thought about for awhile: Best women's walking shoes. I go through walking shoes and sneakers like it's going out of style. Might as well promote the brands I feel are the best, I think I've worn most of them.

I was also thinking of best women's walking shoes for foot pain. Since part of my issue is an unusual gait that I've seen a doctor about - he was no help. Do I do both? Do I do the narrower niche? That part I"m not sure about.

Your niche ideas are definitely viable directions for your niche. You need to choose one when starting out, what are you most passionate about?

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

Thanks Tim,

I"m ok so far, but I know I will need help - so I will definitely reach out when I get stuck. Actually, here's a question. I have several domains with Namecheap that I've pointed to my Hostgator account. Now that I've joined WA - having Hostgator hosting seems kind of redundant. On the other hand, I'm nervous about putting all the eggs in one basket. What do you recommend. I'd don't want to pay for more than I have to. Thanks!
Reply
Shipwright Premium
Hi Wendy,
As your Domains are with Namecheap there are three options:

Option 1:- Point your domains to WA - (note this will cause your website in WA will be blank, backup and restore will be required) Option 2:- Move your domains completely into WA Option 3:- Leave them where they are

To be honest, I would probably move them all over to WA. Only downside is that you would pay $13.99 per domain to transfer. I am also a big believer in 'if it's not broke, don't fix it'. So, you could leave as is at the moment until you get more comfortable with WA etc. As you're existing sites are already in Wordpress, the training in WA still applies. For instance, I personally have four Domains in another host, Siteground. No particular reason other than that i just felt that the site speed would be faster away from WA at the time. But WA are always improving things behind the scenes (more existing innovations from WA this year too), and their website builder and hosting is pretty fast now.

Hope this helps. By the way, if you want to chat via Skype at anytime , my Skype name is:- chips681977

Regards,
Tim

Thank you Tim,
I appreciate the links and I'm going to look at them tonight. I think, for now, I'll just point the DNS servers to WA if I need to host an existing site here. I still have a lot to learn about Wordpress - one of my major goals for the next year, and once that's accomplished I'll be better able to decide what's what.

You know I've never used Skype, which is weird for a tech teacher. I just use Facetime on the iPad. I"m going to have to look into getting a Skype account. As soon as I do - I'll reach out if I have any questions. Thank you so much for your guidance and support. It means a lot. :-)

Hi Tim,
Thank you! I do plan on joining over the weekend when I have more down time. I've admired WA for years from afar.

I do have one question, are there people on here who can only do this part time like me? I'd love to connect with other who've managed to do all of this around a full time job and make decent $$. Time management has always been my biggest issue. Thanks!

Hello Wendy,
Great that you have found WA.
Quick answer to your question is yes. I, like you, also work full time , i have a 9-5 job. I agree that time management is very tough, and up to now i have a method. I make use of my Calander to organise my work. I sometimes only do 1 hour an evening, but this is always targeted work. Although i do make some money as an affiliate within WA, WA has also enabled me to create my own business in website design, due to the amazing courses and tutorials here in WA. To date i have around 5 client's and most of my work is remote which is ideal. I also offer general IT services too. I make an extra 500-600 pounds per month at the moment, and this will increase. This is due to only working a few extra hours per week on top of my full time job.

I hope this helps make things clear for you, and that it is possible to earn money part time here in WA. Welcome to WA again, and i can i just ask out of curiosity, how to did you get here to join, was it via facebook or google / website?

Speak soon,
Tim

Hi Wendy,
Great to have you back on board here at WA. There is simply no other place like WA on the Internet, and without WA i would not have learned the skills i have acquired, outside WA learning these skills and using the services that come with WA would have cost me £1000s elsewhere i am sure. I have tried and wasted money on many other Internet Marketing sites and nothing comes close to WA. I learn something new every day. I know you mentioned that the biggest challenge for you is managing your time - i was chatting to my partner last night and she said, hey, just do 1 hour of productive, targeted work per day. I think I will try that, rather than trying to do too much at once or in one evening per week. Worth a try i suppose and i can always do some at weekends too. Do you have Microsoft Office 365 ? There is a great App within Office 365 called 'Planner'. I use this to manage all of my outstanding tasks for my client's. This helps me keep focused on what I have to do, i set myself deadlines etc. Anyway, just thought I would share that with you, there are of course many other programs you can use, such as the many apps offered via Google. I guess it's just down to personal preference. Feel free to contact me anytime if you need to chat or want some advice etc.

Regards,
Tim
