The URL to my most recent post on the site appeared mentioned twice in the site map. Do I need to delete one entry? How do I do it?

SiteContent has been having issues. The powers that be are working on it. If the URL posted twice then it would naturally show up twice on the sitemap. You might want to drop a note to Support to let them know that you are having this issue.

Thanks so much, Anita.Yes, that's a food solution.:)

You're welcome!

:)

Now it looks like I deleted your previous message, David. It has never happened before lol Some evil spirits...
So how do I delete the URL?Maybe I should do it through the URL remover in the Google search console?yes, it's the same URL to the same post.I think I pressed "publish" twice.

The sitemap file can't be edited that way as it is dynamically generated by the plugin such as AIO SEO. I suggest you go to Google Search Console (Google Webmaster Tools) and re-submit the sitemap.

Are you sure that the URLs are the same?

If you use all in one seo, you can reset

What's the procedure? lol Not everybody is as clever as you are...Yes, all in one SEO...Thanks.:))

Sorry Vera. Are you using a plugin to generate the file? If you are you wouldn't be able to edit it that way. Let me know.

I deleted the wrong thing. Sorry!

Can I trash, or delete, a post which was published and remained on a site for some time at any moment? I mean can I do it before the site is indexed, and can I do it after t

Make sure to do some sort of redirect or Google will get confused.

I think that you can erase a post and then resubmit your site to google search console AND your xml sitemap too.
I don't think it should harm your site - so long as you let Google know what's going on!
This is my personal thought and opinion. I am no pro!
Wishing you good luck - SF

Yes, I also think everything boils down to submitting a renewed sitemap.Thank you.

Good question and answers. I learned something here:). Thanks so much for asking:)

Yep. Good to know some things ...:)

I can only speak from personal experience, and research I've done. From those two options I have a verity of outcomes. For example I've seen many seo experts warnings against deleting a post, but the situation and reasons very. Say you have website with 15 post that is ranking for a couple keywords in couple of your post, now say you delete a post even thought it's one not ranked, you may not see any immediate harm after deleting to ur site but if that post was included on your sitemap and you turned a sitemap in then it can damage the overall rating/ranking of your site, if google happens to still try to crawl it or if someone who has visited the post/page before and trys to again google doesn't like this from things I've read. My own experience differs a little, I deleted a whole site cuz I messed up adding code or something like that, when I went to build a new site that wasn't broken, even though the site name and I think even some post titles were edited, but I when I tried to post them to my new site... A message would pop up from Google saying,.... Tryn to cheat huh? So idk, why I have read and that happened to me, if it's something not to really worrie abt that much.

If it was indexed why not just leave it there as part of your website.

No, it wasn't, but I am curious about future things. There might be a situation when I don't like a published(and indexed) post any longer. Why keep it? My site is like my bookshelf- I don't keep on it all the books I ever bought.History knows of writers burning their books, too.
Maybe I will adopt a more nonchalant attitude to my site in the course of time.
Thanks for responding, Jimmy.:)

You are right you better burn the books you don't want.

Well hope you understand it as a metaphor. When after free writing you start web writing, or SEO writing, you see a lit of things differently. :)

Yes, Vera, I understand everything in our conversation. Just go with your thinking on your site. Maybe unwanted books just take space for the better ones.

Just one other thing to remember Vera, if you have internally linked to the deleted post from another post or page on your website be sure to remove the link otherwise you will get a 404 error.

Yep, that's important, thank you. Do I always see these links, that is I do this myself or can some of them be built automatically?:)

You can find these if there are any by going into Google Search Console and then select "Crawl / Crawl Errors" from the left hand side menu. This will show any soft 404 / not found links.

To remove them in the past I have done this manually by checking posts/pages, but if there is a better way I would be very interested !!!

The suggestions will work but be aware that excerpts of the content may already be copied and pasted elsewhere. That's the darned thing about the internet!

Absolutely! Not everybody wants to abide by the rules. Thanks for responding, Mike.:)

Hi Vera. One more thing...If the site has been indexed by Google, you can use the Google remove URL tool here https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals
and for Bing/Yahoo here;
https://www.bing.com/webmaster/tools/content-removal
David

Thanks, David. But do you think it is necessary to go through it?
People say they just trash a post, and that's it.Stella even mentions publishing a deleted article on the other site the next day! So there don't seem to be any issues with this.
I just thought the mighty Google keeps track of all my posts ever published..lol:)

What Nekko26 says down below makes a lot of sense too.
Play it safe...If you delete any post for any reason, the best way is to notify the search engines and let them remove any references to your post from the cache on their network of servers, over time.

Also, your site ranking stats would not be affected because the robots would know how to crawl your site in the future. Wouldn't you just want to play it safe and not risk your site's credibility with 404 errors?

Play by the rules set by the very system we need to rank for anything in order to succeed.

NB: A 301 redirect of the deleted page to another URL can work too.
David

Yes, this all makes a lot of sense. Good to know such things. Thanks, David.:)

It is your website, you can do whatever you want with it. Unless the post makes you look bad in some way, I can't think of any reason to delete a post. If you are not promoting it or it doesn't have a great Keyword, it won't get read anyway. If it does have great Keywords but you don't like it, why not re write it instead ?
With Grace and Gratitude
Karen

Thanks much , Karen. I am still learning to do all this, and looking back at something published, I just don't like it.Moreover I see that SEO organisation can be better there too. It's like with compiling a book- you don't want to include all you've written there , but things you like.I will sure rewrite my post in a better way and publish it.
Blessings, Vera

You can delete any post or page no matter what index state its in, but why would you want to?

Thanks, Matthew.
Now when I better understand about keywords, their density, etc., I see that some of my posts(especially one of them) may be overfilled with keywords not because of my intention, but because of my emotional style of writing with stressing out some things, and repeating them, and playing on contrasts, etc.. But robots don't understand emotions, they know how to count words. And in this respect my emotional style is my enemy. I need to learn to write for SEO purposes, retaining features of my style, too. A difficult but still attainable task.:)

Don' trash them though, just alter them to look more natural. There's no need to get rid of content if you don't have to

Yep. But sometimes it's easier to write a new post(for me at least) than to mend it and change it. I will certainly use the ideas, and parts of the text which I like, and it can make a good post.Thank you.:)

How do we write an alt text for an image on a site containing some text on it? Should this phrase become part of an alt text?

And what if it's only text? A quote or a Bib

When the image contains text then I use that text as part of the alt tag. The alt tag is supposed to describe the image for people who are unable to see the image itself and for the search engines.

Thanks, Marion. With your training and the answers I have been getting here(yours including) I see now how it works.:)

My understanding of alt text under an image should be a description of the image if it were being described to a blind person. For your profile picture, the alt text I would use is:
Smiling-blonde-woman-with-long-hair
I read somewhere that 6-7 words is best. I hope that is correct, and that it helps.

hahaha... Thanks. I've written a bit different text"Vera, the author of the posts",( a clever blond"- that's a externsion...lol)
Truly, I was asking how to describe a text image. I know perfectly well how to describe a sunset or a flower , a man or a woman. I was asking what to write when the image is a quote, or a Bible verse, etc. But I think I got the answer. And I did all the images, and the SEO checker shows a better outcome now.:)

Vera, I tend to agree with BobBarr.

Placing Alt Text is important for Google but, the text should agree with the message that the picture is delivering. Hopefully, that will encompass corresponding keywords.

If not, then change the picture to a more "keyword inviting" image...unless you love the picture...

Jim

Thanks , Jim , but the question was not about how to describe pictures and how to choose them- I know how to do it. The question was about writing an alt text for a text image, that is a quote or a Bible verse, etc.:)

I myself upon occasion, after inserting the image use the editing feature and attribute image (if nessesary) and type the desired text into the caption box. Then it shows up in small font below the image. Hope that helps. Brad

Thanks , Brad. I will remember that. It's something like what they do in Pinterest, right?

I don't use Pinterest so I don't know but can show you a sceenshot of how i have used custom text with images. Just click image after inserting when in editing mode and select editing function and put your text in the caption box.

I need to correct myself on one thing, the smaller font only displays in editing mode(at least for me). After published, it shows in the same font as the body text. Maybe there is an adjustment for that I haven't figured out. Maybe a good question for the classroom. I'm using the free version of the Magazine point theme.

Brad

Looks fine to me. But it's important to make sure such text doesn't repeat the text of an article itself and doesn't have excessive keywords, I guess. So many things to learn....Anyway caption box is a good variant.I will remember. I am going to start doing a test site and test different options.

Good idea Vera. Myself , I only use royalty free images from either wiki commons or pixabay and apply attribution when required by the author. I always use my own text for images which i don't think is necessary if you use the text they offer for the image(i could be wrong).

If I were to use an image from another article/site, I would ask for permission first. I mean... if you were offer to attribute and even insert a link to the article as well as let them know what and how you are using the image for, I would think that they would comply with your request at least most of the time.

Providing a backlink to their article would only bring more potential traffic to there site anyway. But then again, if you have affiliate links and ads on the post that your using the image, i guess they could deem that as "commercial use" and either deny you or want a piece of the pie(so to speak). That's where it gets a little murky.

I would like to know more from those who have more experience with that as commons and pixabay are kind of limited and often don't have an image that fits my content as well as would like.

Brad

Just following our discussion- a post with a lot of images- Happy New Year to you!:)

Thx Vera, Have a great new year.

Brad

:))

What's wrong with using keywords and related keyword phrases for alt text? I thought that's what we were taught here at WA.

Yes, thanks. Though there is a bit opposite meaning to it. Look at it:

Alt text is substituted in place of the image for people who cannot view the image. Screen-reader software for the blind reads the alt text aloud.

The alt text should describe what's shown in the image. If a keyword fits into that description, it's fine to use as *part of* the description. The alt text should not consist solely of keywords.

Thanks, so it's the file names that matter. Hmmm.

I would let the image speak for itself. or use it as a take off for an idea that it expresses. Scott

Thanks , Scott. But Google bots are of a different opinion. They want Me to speak...lol

Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking as a writer only. Scott

We are all writers here. haha... Time we started thinking SEO categories...:)

It should say what it is, when it's a vase of flowers, you call it
"White vase of flowers red roses"
and not
"Roses are red violets are blue"

Thanks, Loes- this I understand.
I don't understand what to do with an image which is actually a quote, or a Bible verse?Sometimes done by creative graphic artists they look great in the body of an article. But how to write alt text for a text? paraphrase it or leave a blank space?

I would name that once after the quote by keywords
When the quote is: Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Albert Einstein
I would call it:
Albert Einstein, knowledge, imagination, limited

A lot of people do know some words from a quote, but not the exact quote, and they will enter the words they remember and the writer

Great! I like it. Thanks.:)

No...You just need very few descriptive words or a short phrase.
Have a read here, Vera
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/alt-text-alternative-text

David

Thanks David . I was asking about a situation when the image is a quote, like this one , for example, This is too long of course, but it doesn't matter. Do we somehow describe the quote or do we leave the field blank, or is it better not to use such image?

No. Don't leave it blank as you will be penalized.
Alt text is short and descriptive. e.g "Life is moments not breaths."
That's my take.
If you appear to place lengthy text you may also be penalized for spam-type keyword stuffing.

David

Yep. That's what I wanted to hear, and Loes is of about the same opinion.Thank you!:)

Hi Pete thanks Need to study all this. Though it's a big and a bit different question- where we take images from. Later I will send you a link to an article I read recently. The person (and she seems an authority in SEO) says there is nothing wrong in using stock images. It all depends on the site, of course, on the purpose of using images- many factors... there are still questions for me here
Vera

Thank you very much, Pete.:)

Just following our discussion, which of the images I used in this post the link I am sending to, do you think I should have applied for permission to use for?I am really interested because maybe I am breaking the law and don't know about it.
And- Happy New Year!

Thanks so much Pete...Great chatting to you, too.
Of course I didn't want you to go through all my images- crazy I even thought of it.I always take stock images and I just wanted to once again make sure it's OK.Thanks- you proved it.Just do we need to point out in our blogs that images used are stock images? I loved doing these a kind of video blogs while here at WA. Pity we can't do it on our sites because of download issue. But I still sometimes use them on my site- can you see and tell me honestly if you like it?Is it not distracting?
http://lifetothefull.siterubix.com/a-lesson-on-perfect-moment
Have a good day!:))

Thanks so much, Pete. What you say is really helpful. I agree about the images- I would also use more- I am just afraid to outweigh the site, so to say.The download time will be longer.
Not so sure about more titles, but with more "scientific"posts it works well, I agree.Anyway, it's my first site, and I am just learning.
Do you think a full menu, or the menu of all posts is a good idea?I really wanted this, but now I have mixed feelings about it.
Thank you. A look from aside helps a lot.... :))

Thanks so much Pete.I am sure a person knowing even "a little bit" about web design has major advantages here.Good there are many knowledgeable people in the community who can help others. And this all is not as scary as it was in the beginning, even to me.
Great talking to you. All your advice is really helpful. I think the structure you are describing is really nice- which WP theme can be used for that?I think I will not change my existing site, but will try to do something like that with my new one.Do you think Rubix site(not.com site) can be ranked well, anyway? I am planning to start another site to learn and experiment , but I also have a sound idea for a new one.
Thank you again!
Vera

Vera

I am am in the process of setting up a fan page on Facebook. Just wanted to clear up some issues- you don’t want to joke with Facebook.

So, should the name of

Site IDENTITY is important, so use the pic or favicon as on your site to let people know that its YOU!
Tony H. has some really interesting videos on that...sorry I dont have them handy at this moment...on my laptop on the beach...
But go to his profile page, and you will find them.

HAPPY NEW YAER Vear!

Tom

I think it is good to remain consistent so yes to all.
Damo

Thank you,Damian. Most people think the same.:)

I see you have gotten some really good responses. Just for the record, I would say yes to all of them. The only exception I would make would be that I would use the logo either in the profile picture or in the picture you use in the header. I have seen pages that use it in one or the other. Either way, your followers will see your logo and associate it with your brand.

Happy New Year!

Anita

Thanks much, Anita. It's been sure helpful. Thank you for your addition, too.
Happy New Year!:)

You're welcome, Vera!

:)

Yes my friend, yes to all. Have a great day! :-)

Well, almost a training with all "Yes" from you...lol. Thank you!:)

Hello Vera, I would also say yes to your questions. Facebook gives you the opportunity to put the same URL in as your website providing it hasn't already been taken.

I have 1 or 2 training videos on Facebook, I hope to be adding some more in the near future, I hope that this may help you.

All the best to you.

Roy

That's great, Roy. I'll look at it. Thanks.:)

You're building your brand so I check yes for everything

Thanks. Hopefully, Facebook agrees with you.lol:)

I agree with Spinner721, the images and name want to be the same so people can identify your brand. Sometimes you may not be able to pick the FB name as website name (especially if it is quite popular keywords), but if that's the case, you want to make it as close as your website name.
I have not really done any research on keywords in FB... I am not sure if it is something you really need to concern. To me, FB is just sort of a mirror of my website, the tool for the Social Media.
Hope it helps!
Kyoko

Thanks, Kyoko. I also see FB fan page as a tool(can be a powerful one) for promoting my website. That's why I want to set it up correctly. The matter is, we can always expect surprises from Facebook.:)

Agree. Hopefully good surprises! :D
I have done FB ads for over 2 years and even only for these two years, they are changing a lot of functions and algorithm... (which is better, run ads as engagement, or web conversions?? etc) so hard to catch up! But yes, setting up correctly is very important. I am so used to create fan page, that I don't even think of whether I should do "community" or "brand" when I create. I have not really done much research on it, but I am sure these things make differences (I usually create as "brand".. I think that's what I learned long time ago, but some people sell things through "community" or even hear about "group" is better).
Good luck! :)
Kyoko

Thank you very much. i agree if you have done a lot of the like stuff, no questions arise. I just had a bad time with Facebook when I was locked out of my account and couldn't get in. Just want to play safe.:)

Here are some great tips Vera. Best wishes with the process. Keep me posted! https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-build-a-facebook-page-for-business-a-guide-for-beginners/

Thanks Mike, will definitely look through it, but it'd be interesting to get some responses from those who did it. I guess, not many yet.:)

Mike, thanks for the link to Social Media Examiner. What a great site. I have been struggling with my Facebook setup and this will be a great help. Nothing like a step by step guide for beginners....right up my alley. Hopefully I can also get up to speed on all things Social Media. Take care.

Mike

You are to be greatly commended Vera. I notice a new perspective toward business building, Don't completely lose your artistic soul though! :))

It's on my site now- thanks...I'll send you the link in PM:))

For branding and consistency, I say yes

Thank you, but what "yes"? "Yes" to all the questions?Do you have your own fan page?:)

Sorry. Yes to using same or similar images and naming. When you post stuff, your website name will pop up for them. So you want to make it something that people are krwady familiar with.

My concern is that a fan page will be overloaded with the name of a website used 3 times. And if we use the same key words, won't it be too much?

I wouldn't worried about over optimization with your Facebook page. Facebook has a search too. If you use the same keywords, than you can be discovered on FB too.

Over optimization is more of a concern for individual web properties

Well maybe you are right, but I was just trying to look at the situation from the point of view of visitors, as well- won't it be more interesting for them to see different names of a page and a site?. Though if it's a rule, it's a rule. But I didn't see strict guidelines about it.

How can I edit questions? I got used to impossibility of editing things in private messages. OK, in that case only one person sees my lapsuses, and I can always correct myself

All you need to do is go into your personal tab at the top right-hand corner (where your profile pic is) click on "my profile", go to you Questions tab and click on the question you want to edit.
See attached picture of next step!
Good luck & merry xmas - SF

Something totally new to me...
Thanks...Will try to do it. Tomorrow.
And I think I will need to ask more questions for you to tell me what's where...lol:)

No problem...always happy to help out =)

Thanks for asking a great question!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Good Morning Vera! After you post something, see that little arrow thingy in the upper right corner of your post? Like this ^ only upside down. haha Click there and then you can edit the post. :-)

I do!:)))
I am not that bad...lol It didn't save, and I remain with my "How Can Do...etc ....".Kyle spoiled us here with broad possibilities for editing things.....hahaha. And when some thing for some reason doesn't work...aghrrrr...:-)

It's ok to make mistakes. We all do :) But as for editing, sometimes it takes a little while for the servers to update.

Sometimes theey never update even after you make edits. This isn't WA only, its in general.

That's why most social sites have warnings to check your work before posting because once it's out there, it's out there. So going forward, just take a couple of seconds to proof your content before posting :)

Hope this helps :)
Marlinda

Yep, thanks...hahaha...What I always teach others, I need to teach myself. I just got used to the situation that everything here is edited so easily...lol
