Hello to you all!

I have noticed that even if I have followed the instructions (see link) Google Analytics still is counting my own visits to my site.

Pernilla, I checked the instructions given in your link and compared them with other sources. They seem to be correct.
But like Taetske, I must say, I don't pay particular attention to google Analytics - well, not as much as I should maybe.
I'm told there are other tools you can use to check your visits. I shall look into it and will let you know.

Grandes abrazos from me too !!!

Giulia :)

Thank you so much Giulia, that would be great to hear what kind of tools you find good. I haven't done any checks before. Only now it starts to get interesting as I have begun to reach out via social media.

Grandes abrazos!!!
:-)

P.S. Have started to learn Spanish!

Good afternoon Pernilla,

I tested my website and was told I did not have any analytics on it, that was not liked and will cost you points.
Then came a post of Trish warning having widgets above the fold. We had a little conversation and she told me to look on GA to see if I was ok.
I really got the idea I needed to install so now I am investigating. Then Valerie had a post on problems with GA and now you also have a post on a problem with GA. I am really wondering if I should go through the trouble installing this just to get a better ranking?

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Hello Taetske,

Yes, you should absolutely use Google Analytics.

Read Stevens post. He shares great links to Jays Google Analytics Webinar and Google Analytics Academy. When you have connected your site with Google Analytics follow the instructions in Stephs training: Te deseo mucho éxito!
Grandes abrazos!

Thank you, Pernilla, will have a second look.

How I wish I could answer your question Pernilla?

Hello Boaz,

Thank you for checking my question and wanting to help.
No worries, I have already solved the issue with help of the answers here.

If you need to know how to do, here is the link Triblu shared: Here you can learn how to do.

I believe somewhere in the console is a place you can stop you own visits being done, but google being google, move it very regulalry, which is a pain

Hi Dave!
Thanks for leaving your comment! Appreciate it a lot.
I have been able to solve this issue with help of Stephs Training (See Triblu's Answer).
:-)

Thanks for asking this question.

Hello Alex,
Great if you can profit from my question too.

Very nice to meet you. Follow you now!
Wish you great success with your online business.
:-) Pernilla

Hello again Alex,

Click on the link which Triblu shared here and follow Stephs instructions. That's how you have to do.
:-)

HI Pernilla, thanks I just excluded MY IP address from GA.
Regards,
Alex

Perfect!
So glad it helped you too!
:-)

Links given in the comments here will not help. The IP address is normally dynamic and you cannot filter it that way. This is only for static addresses. There is a way to do this, cannot describe it here it is in my site's post. So search a bit and you will find the way, it is easy.

Thank you so much Jovo for your comment!

Appreciate you telling me about how the IP address work and cannot be filtered as described in the given links.
:-)

Good question, Pernilla, as I too would like GA not to track my own movements.

Thank you, James, for checking my question!!

I'll check the links given here and see if I can find the solution to this issue. I'll tell you how it works out.
:-)

Thank you, Pernilla...I'll try to follow the links supplied in this thread and hope it works for me, otherwise I'll have to disturb you a little.

:-)

Hello again, James!

With help of the link Trish shared, I found out the solution.

Follow the instructions on Stephs training and it will work for you too. If you have any questions, just ask me!
:-)

Thank you...I will, Pernilla :-)

Hey Pernilla,

It's just a matter of adding a filter. Here's a tutorial to help you with this: Hope you find this helpful

Hey Trish,

You are always here to help when there are tricky things to do. Awesome!!

I have installed a filter but it doesn't work. My visits are still counting.

I'll check the link you gave me. I'm sure it'll help me to solve this issue.
:-)

This cannot work, this is only for static IP addresses. They are normally dynamic.

Hello again Trish!

I followed Stephs instructions in her training and I did find out what I had missed doing when first adding the filter. It was just so easy, it was only that I hadn't added "All Web Site Data" to the selected view-box.

It works now! Great!!
:-)

Hello again Jovo!

It does work correctly now. I could solve my problem with help of the link Trish shared.

But thanks for your inputs anyways!!
:-)

Your address is probably dynamically created, so next time you log in it will be different and it will not be filtered. Perhaps they do not change every time you log in, but they do change, this cannot work. But if it is static it will be filtered of course.

Good to know.
I'll think of this.
:-)

Hi Trish,

Thanks for the advice on how to set filters in GA

Regards,
Alex

You are very welcome Alex!

Google has worked consistently for me since adding my filter Jovo. Until I use a different internet access provider, I do not anticipate having to change my IP address.

However, I do appreciate your making us all aware of this possibility, so Thank YOU!

I think it changes automatically when you log into Internet, it is not that you would change it yourself. This is for security reasons and also due to fact that providers sometimes have not enough of them and then attribute them randomly assuming that not all users will log in at the same time. I guess you can test it and see what happens, should be dependent on the provider. In any case, most welcome.

You install a filter that tracks your home IP address.

Jay has several Google Analytics live Trainings. Go to Live Events and Search for Google Analytics to display them.

I don't recall which one shows you how to set up filters but here is the first one of the series.

Thank you so much, Craig for your help!

I have actually installed a filter, but it doesn't seem to work.

I'll check the link you sent me.
I'm sure it will help me.

This is an excellent help. I’m so glad that you checked my question, because I haven’t solved this issue yet. I just couldn’t find out how to set up another mailaddress in Gmail - and have been procrastinating it, instead doing other work. So your help is like heavens sent!

Exactly as Howard says, which is the way I have mine.

Many thanks, Dave, for checking out my question!
Appreciate it a lot!

Hi Pernilla!

If you have set things up right in Gmail, where you have the "from" contact info listed there is a little down arrow you click on and it should show your other website email address.

Select that and your recipient will get an email from your website email address.

If you don't see that then you need to get that setup in Gmail.

Thank you so much for your help, Howard!
The picture is great. Now I understand.

However, I don't see any "From" field when opening up the email window. I only see "To" and "Subject".
I have to search for the set up in Gmail.

:-)

When you go to compose your email, that is where the from field will show up.

Cool and good answer Howard

Log in to your Gmail account. Click on the red box at the top - Compose. This will open up your email. write and send it will automatically have your Gmail address as your from address.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your help, Derek!

When do you use a link shortener, like for example bit.ly?

I've read that a link shortener cloaks a link. When should I cloak a link?

Do you use it when sharing

Very nice to meet you. Thank you for checking out my question. Hope you too could benefit from the answers I have received.

I used goo.gl but Google is closing down that service. They are replacing it with another type of short link called Firebase Dynamic Linking, which they say works better with mobile technology.

Thank you very much Jude, for stopping by and sharing your knowledge and an interesting link!!

How very kind of you!

Your most welcome, Pernilla. Thank you for asking the question! :-)

Hey P, I use bit.ly mainly to shorten my links for my Shopify store, and I used to use it for social media.

Perhaps I should try Pretty Links, I am open to it, although I still use bit.ly.

This is one RAD question!! Thanks!

Kaju, have you tested it to see if those links work well for mobile users? ~Jude

I've tested it Jude, and the links work fine on mobile, both iPhone and Android. Thanks for asking!

Hey K! (ohh, why haven't I realized this rhyme until now?!)

I think Trish just gave you a very good answer. In saying so, I don't use Pretty links, as I ended up having too many plugins on my websites.
But, I do use shortened for Twitter only, and only sometimes - there's really no longer need after they increased the number of characters allowed.
Otherwise, like Trish, I do not use shorteners on social media, and certainly never in my websites.
Hope this helps Pernilla:)

Giulia

Thank you so much Giulia, for telling me how you handle this.

It's good to know, saves me a tiny bit of time, by not having to shorten the links.

Today I posted one of my blogs on FB for the first time! It'll be interesting to see how the traffic develops.

Always great to see you my dear friend,
:-)

Hey Pernilla,

1.) I never use a link shortener like bit.ly anymore, even on Twitter. However, I DO use Pretty Link on my website, though I don't feel it is a link shortener... yet, technically it could be labeled that.

2.) Pretty Link definitely cloaks a link but it appears to be a more acceptable method of cloaking links for websites where bit.ly stopped being acceptable for website use years ago.

3.) No, I do NOT use shorteners when posting to my social media accounts. However, a company that I hired recently to "test drive" their services DO use shorteners in the links they post for me on my social media accounts. But, I think that is more for them to be able to measure the advantage of their service so they can report to me with their overall results.

Pretty Link make affiliate links look a tad more attractive to click on for many users ...and, it seems to be Google approved too.

Hope this helps you.

Hey Trish!

Thank you so much for taking so much of your time to explain all this to me. A very informative and helpful answer. How glad I am that I asked before I tried it out. Sometimes it's good to "just do", but sometimes it really is better to ask about advice.

I think I don't need a link shortener at this very moment, but I want to check out more about Pretty Link for later.

I'll do like you do and post on social media without link shortener.
:-)

I love your thorough responses, Trish!

I think, as with anything, you can find people for or against. I'm certainly not a "pro"on social media, I'm just sharing what I learned, but I appreciate you sharing your insight, Trish.

Thank YOU Veronica, I'm a far cry from all-knowing but I like to share what I've learned with those who are willing to listen. :-))

I use pretty links for my website and marketing efforts just because some of my posts have long url's.

Thank you Howard for telling me how you do.
I'll check out Pretty Link. Trish also recommended this possibility.
:-)

From what Bo shared, using the shortened links are great to use on Facebook.

Thanks for reminding me Veronica!
I must watch that episode again.

It just looks a bit strange with the bit.ly link with those numbers.

Well, I think this is a case No.20 on the "Kaju"-list!!

Sorry Pernilla, you went over my head, on this one. Those below may have the answer.

frank

Great of you to stop by checking my question.

Yes Frank, I've got the answer why.
Please check Triblu's and IvyT's answers.
:-)

I use chrome. I used alt text and it shows up on my images when I hover over them.

Thank you Kelyee, for telling me how it works for you.

I didn't know I have to fill in both the Title field and the Alt Tag field.
:-)

Hey Pernilla,

Why it is so VERY important for website owners to now use ALT tags is that these tags are NOT for SEO but for screen readers for the visually challenged web surfers.

If you want SEO advantage, use the Title field. See screen print below.

Hope this helps you.

Hey Trish!

How grateful I am for your help.
This explains it all perfectly.
Now I know how to do!
:-)

Hi,

Just a two points:

1. The balloon text on alt image mouse hover only works for Internet Explorer. If you want it to feature on all kinds of browsers you need to add a ‘title tag’ to your alt image HTML.

2. Just about everyone you meet will talk about using your alt image text for SEO, and that’s fine, but don’t forget that the reason it exists is to provide an alternative view when images don’t load, or when people view your page in purely text-based readers. People who are blind make use of it.

Edit: please use an alt tag to provide an accurate description of your graphic; please don’t use it to keyword stuff. Google isn’t into that.

Thank you so much, Ivy, for explaining so well!
Appreciate it a lot. Now I understand.

:-)

No worries! Let me know if you get stuck. :)

Hi Suzanne,

the Alt Text on images is really just for the search engines and is not displayed when hovering over an image. If you choose the option "Link to Media" (see image) then the URL where the image is stored in the media library will show when you hover over the image in web page view.

I use the Alt text to sneak in secondary keyword phrases (related to the article, of course)

John

Thank you very much John. So good to know.

Thanks also for the tips on what to write in the Alt text.

Appreciate your help!!

I don't know Pernilla, but here is what I do.

Click Edit
Under Advanced Options, you will see Image Title Attribute and in there I enter the description I have in Alternative Text that is shown above.

Then click Update.

I hope then solves the issue.

Hello Monica!
Thank you for helping me.

See Johns answer above: The alt tag is not meant to be displayed, just good for the search engines SEO.
:-)

Sounds good Pernilla, thank you for letting me know.

Hello again Monica,

Did you see Triblu's and IvyT's answers. They have both explained how it works. It is the Title which gets displayed not the Alt Tag.

You did also tell me about the Title attribute, but I understood first when I saw the image Triblu added.
:-)

Excellent Pernilla, thank you for letting me know.

No, I didn't see their answers. I'll read them.

Interesting question I will look forward to the answer :)

Hello Chris,
See Johns answer (Mackiejw). He says the alt tag is not displayed, it's just good for the search engines.

Thank you, great info to have :)

Great of you to stop by checking my question.

Yes Frank, I've got the answer why.
Please check Triblu's and IvyT's answers.

I use chrome. I used alt text and it shows up on my images when I hover over them.

Thank you Kelyee, for telling me how it works for you.

I didn't know I have to fill in both the Title field and the Alt Tag field.
