I had a new member ask me about closed captioning. I have researched the database and find there were historical questions (1 year plus in age) so wanted to ask.
If not,
I know there is at least one program out there that will closed caption any video out there, but I di not know what it is. I only know about it because a neighbor of mine downloaded it for her sister who is going deaf. I'm sure a search on Google will bring up many.
You're quite welcome! Let me know if you can't find a program and I will ask my neighbor about the one she has (when she gets back from her son's lake house.) Just send me a private message.
I meant to also say that there are other sources and it depends on your equipment but, there are sources for hearing impaired and/or other languages.
I believe there is what someone can use.

Is closed captioning available for wa training, etc.?

I have been researching alternative resources for PD and CC0 pictures and it appears that US Government Pictures are Public Domain.
I have searched WA for info specific
Not long ago I read an internal (=WA0) post that seemed to say something like "Be warned and be very careful...PD and mentions like "Public" and "Free to use" can be misleading, and/but the safe ones to use are labelled CC0....Period! I, for one, will use nothing else!
I think Marion is right not all images are free
https://pixabay.com/en/blog/posts/public-domain-images-what-is-allowed-and-what-is-4/
My understanding is that all images belong to someone so it's safe to assume that you do NOT have a legal right to use them unless they are labelled as CC0 or some other copyright which permits you to use them.
Marion, thanks for the info and I agree that they would be owned by someone, a corporation, a government, etc... I am calling GOV USA since it appears they are public domain unless labeled but it is better to be safe than sorry. Jay
Yes, but 'most' and 'generally' are the recurring terms to watch for, as for the long list of exceptions provided at the bottom of the page. I used to deal with this issue daily some years ago, in a Govt job. It's good to check and not be caught out!
OK...maybe need to check specific images you might want to use..
Your original post states "It appears that US Government Pictures are Public Domain". I have searched WA for info specific to US Government Pictures and can only find an old blog confirming my statement above. Is this valid?
I get that "generally" and "Recurring" are terms to watch for...but, if there are exceptions that you have dealt with...
Where does one check so as not to be caught out? I do not know that answer! Will wait for update and attempt to find answer myself in meantime! Interesting question as I deal a lot with branches of the government and inquiring minds want to know!
I'd write to whoever published the images to ask about their origins and mechanical rights, and also double check on a reverse image search for confirmation of origin.
Ivy, I am going to call GOV USA to see if they can provide any further definition. Thanks. Jay
It depends.
I've worked in roles where I had to apply to archives for the public use of an image, for Govt. Your seeing that same image in the public domain doesn't automatically make it CC0, because it came from an archive to which I applied.
I just asked in live chat whether there would be any interest in some training or infographic for image use. I was thinking a small explainer plus downloadable reference sheet would do, if there was interest in it.
Ivy, Thanks and definite interest. It is not clear-cut but why would it be right. We will see what responses come through. Jay
What are the images in question? Where were they obtained?
I can tell you loose outline details of several case studies involving a photo being publicly displayed by Govt that was believed to be public domain, which the owner photographers later discovered! Huge legal headache. Govt also has to apply for permission to use images.
As another example: our War Memorial has extensive archives of photos that are available for reprint and online use - with the right application for permission to do so. Govt still has to apply to use images from that collection - they have no special favours.

If you use Grammarly, are you experiencing issues when writing a WA blog or a post in site content?
Grammarly works fine otherwise it appears. Thanks, Jay
Good evening Jay,
On email there is no problem with Grammarly and neither on WA comments. It gets difficult when writing a WA post or a PM. One can turn it off till all the text is written and then turn it on again.
Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske
This is a great tip Taetske!
I have problems with writing a WA PM. I'm quite Grammarly is causing this. So good to know that I can turn it on and off when needed.
So good that I found your comment!
:-)
I had to turn off Grammarly when using WA platform. It seems to cause a terrible lag no matter what you are doing. I do not have the problem on other programs like MS Word. Occasionally Grammerly will act up in my Gmail account.
It's a great tool, but I think they may have a bug or two that needs to be ironed out.
Thanks for alerting the nuance in Grammarly, which, after all, was mechanized like a tool for no-brainers, but how good it is and how well it works highly depend on who the users are. Keeping this inherent defect in mind will enhance its quality of usage.
James
I have the same issue. The Grammarly icon does not appear in the text box in site content of when writing a WA blog post
I will investigate :-)
I have not yet encountered Grammarly issues ever since I started using it. But it seems some people do face some difficulties.
By the way, are you using Google Chrome Browser? It seems to work best with Grammarly Chrome
I am using Chrome and thanks for the response. It was working well until last night so not sure what is up.Jay

I cannot fin
Similar experience here, I appreciate your fellowship in sharing the ups and downs so we can slowly grow up together.

Not sure on that Jay. I just use a snipping tool to copy an area and then dump it into MS Word.
