My 2-month-old laptop computer is failing me.The key board is no longer funtioning I must send the unit back for warranty repairs and the unit will be returned for 20 Days. Wi

Just ask the technician to swap the hard drive from your present computer to the temp computer so that you can continue to work while your new broken laptop is getting fixed.

It does not take much time - maybe 10-15 minutes.

Hello, nice to see you. Andy has some great ideas. There are a few factors to consider though. Your budget, how big is your present hard drive. The external keyboard is a great idea and a quick fix, just plug it in and use. The external hard drive will work the same way. You also have the option of backing up your hard drive to a cloud platform. Just double check with Andy. All the best and I hope you are doing well.
Michael

Backing up to the cloud is also an option. But it is less secure and someone might have stuff they don't want to risk getting hacked. It depends on what you are backing up and how secure you want it.

I had a computer business for 24 years. Fixing computers scares most people because they don't understand what goes on in there, but I can assure you it is not a big deal.

Keyboards on notebook (laptop) computers are a very easy fix. They pretty much just pop off, unplug it and reverse the procedure with the new one. On occasion, there are one or two screws that have to be removed to fix it.

I very highly suggest an external keyboard that plugs into a USB port (socket) since they are made to be tougher and don't normally break down as quickly.

External hard drives are absolutely worth the money. They take a little bit to get them set up correctly but after that, it is plug and play. As Dale said SSD (Solid State Drives) are much faster, but cost more. Since it is a backup hard drive, speed is not a major factor unless you are storing thousands of photos on it. External drives can and will save all your work so when your computer dies, you don't lose all your information. Set up the External drive to back up your entire computer. Use an incremental backup. That way it only copies files that have changed since you backed up last. Have it run a 3am or a time you are asleep so it doesn't slow you down. If you don't have one, go get one. What size? A terabyte at least. (1TB)

ALWAYS set your external drive as a backup so that as soon as you plug it in, it's making copies of your stuff. That is what it was designed to do and you won't be sorry.

Speaking of external;

External HDD/SSD
External Monitor
External Keyboard
External Mouse

Get a nice 4 port USB HUB and connect all of these to it. When you take your computer somewhere, just unplug the hub and use the built-in hardware. When you get back to your desk, just plug back in and your computer will run a backup and you will be back on the heavier duty stuff to make your notebook last as long as possible without issue.

Do you have Windows? Get some maintenance software. I use System Mechanic by http://IOLO.com It works and prevents all kinds of issues that Windows is known for. Set it to run Active Care all the time and forget to worry. Just keep it updated. System Mechanic also has a Pro version with Anti-virus built-in.

Windows also requires a good anti-virus program. I use Kaspersky, but there are other good ones. Norton used to be awesome but it got huge and slow, McAffe I avoid because the algorithm they use is not very good.

Do you have Apple? It is NOT immune to viruses and hacking no matter what you have been told. There simply is no such thing as immune to hacking or viruses. Invest in a quality anti-virus.

The problem with a temporary computer is it will have your information on it when it gets returned, and you have to add software to do your work because it doesn't come with it. I would rather purchase a cheap one to use in the meantime as a backup and keep it around just for that. I have my wife's computer set up to replace mine and vice versa. That way, even if one goes down, we can still operate.

I hope this helps.
Andy

If you have an external keyboard use that and a USB flash drive or USB external hard drive to move all your files(folders, music, images, videos). For software it's best if it's possible to save the settings and the projects on an external drive as copy pasting the software might not work (some software use the registry and might not work if you just copy paste them).

Sorry this has happened, Sandra. We agree with the comments below but if your keyboard has stopped functioning completely you may have a problem actually backing up to your new external hard drive. We believe it can still be done but you may need expert technical help to do it.
Colette and Philip

I use an external hard drive connected via USB for those very reasons, Sandra. I learned the hard way.

You need backup software like this one:

https://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html

Using it you will be able to transfer all your apps and data to another computer and to restore them to your repaired machine.

Oh, computer problems suck.

An external hard drive is like a usb memory stick, but with more room/memory to put huge files on them. And faster than usb memory sticks.

They are great for back ups. It's best to regularly make a back up from your computer or laptop on an external hard drive anyway. Because computers crash. And take your hard work, administration and beloved pictures or video's into the void.

And you're right: once you have another computer, you plug the external hard drive into the usb port and get right back to work.

Good luck with your computer!

Yep, it'll allow you do that :)

Also, when purchasing a new hard-drive I recommend opting for an SSD drive. This stands for solid-state-drive & they have no moving parts, which means they're less likely to break & they are MUCH faster (and quieter) than a traditional HDD.

SSD's are a little more expensive, but worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the tip. I'm in the middle of replacing my external hard drive for exactly that reason: due to the moving parts it crashed when it tipped over. Even a soft landing made it crash, so I need something a bit more stable.

I was lucky I had a back up from my back up so I only lost a few months of work/files, but it did hurt none the less :-)

Yeah HDDs are pretty risky to move - also if stored unused for a while in certain environments that can damage them as well. SSDs also use less power too...

I did the same thing though, purchased an external HDD because of price difference... but since having converted SSD, I’d hands-down testify that they’re truly worth the extra $$.

Thanks, I'll have a look at those for sure!

I purchased a bridge cable but found out that does not transfer programs. I am especially worried about my the licenses. do you have any suggestion that doesn't cost a fortune?

That's a hard question to answer as we don't really know what computer you have, the programs you want to transfer across, whether or not those programs allow for a migration etc.

If it's just files (like word, excel, .jpegs, etc etc etc), you can just copy them onto a flash drive or the cloud and load onto your new machine.

If it's software like your antivirus and such, you need to reinstall them on the new computer and apply your license there. This is deactivate your old machine's licenses.

If all that is too fiddly, the really best option for you will be to take your computer to your local computer geek shop and have them transfer your programs across. Their rates should not be expensive at all (less than a hundred dollars for sure).

Just make sure you go to a reputable one (the likes of JB Hi Fi usually recommend good local tech support that you can trust ... walk into their shop and chat to their IT sales staff ... that's one way of getting free IT consultation to know what to do next ... hehe ... or better yet, ask the shop you bought your new computer from).

What is the best way to transfer from information my dying computer to a new computer?

Hi Sandy,

Just as a quick reference,

- 6 monthly works out at 39 US $ per month upfront $ 234.

- 12 monthly works out at 29.92 US per month upfront $ 359.

Both options offer a real saving and going for one or the other can be a real mindset shift we can just concentre on creating or expanding that business.

Just thought if someone upgrades midway through a month then it is pro rata.

Alex

Glad you asked. I forgot also.

hi Sandy -- good question -- looks like Chris has got Kyle's recent post presenting the new order page for you ...

hope everything works out, all the best, cheerio ... :)

Hello sweet Sandy. Yes, i'm pretty sure the 6 month premium would be annual. Just like the yearly, you just are committed to 6 months.

I hope all is good with you my friend😍

I did a poor jod on Key word reserch so I want to change my Domain name. I have already purchased my new name?

Looks like Triblu has you covered.

Hey Sandra,

The following video may offer you the help you seek: Hope you find this helpful.

I think you've already answered the question yourself, dragonfly. It seems you already understood what to do when it comes to changing the domain name for your website which is buying a new one. And you've done that already. Thanks for your post!

Rather than give you more techie information on your concern, I would suggest you review "Chee Shi or Marley2016) take on this issue and decide which one you could deal with better.

Some one else asked the similar question the other day on whether can change the domain name on the site.

Once the domain name is registered, you are not able change to it, the only thing you may be able to is to create a subdomain which may suit your niche. and post most of your articles in that subdomain.

you may create it like : xyz.abc.com assuming your domain name is abc.com, and your niche keyword is concerning xyz.

or else you create a subdirectory such as abc.com/xyz and post your articles using your niche keyword in this subdirectory.

hope this help

Cheers!!

Susan (Marley2016) has you covered on this question the URL cannot be changed only the title of your website. Unless you purchased another domain.

Wishing you well

Andre

Go to websites under site manager. Under the website you want to move to your new domain you will see "Move". Click on that and it will take you through the process of moving your old domain to your new domain

Sandra,
I am not sure you have a question here or if you already
answered your own question.

Once you purchase a domain name on a dot com dot net
or dot org that cannot be changed you need to purchase
another with the name you want to have!

You can change the Title or Name of Your Website at
anytime you want.

So what is your question.

Wish I could help

I don't understand. Do you mean submenu?

When you post, it goes up as a draft. You have to publish it (click the Publish button) before it will appear.if this hasn't clarified

It will the automatically appear as the top post of your blogroll.

And, unless you've changed it, the blogroll is automatically your front page.

Please ask more questions if this hasn't clarified anything. I may not be understanding your problem, especially as I post directly on my site. I don't use WA's Site Content tool.

I'm assuming you used a Site Content template and you did actually publish the post correct? Did you publish it as a page or post? Can you share your site URL with me so I can take a look?
