The way I see it, I've understood the same as you've written :)

Hi Esteban -

I have to ask - where did your user name come from? It seems like there has to be a back story!

Dennis

Haha that's funny you ask me that. It's actually just essiman written with numbers. My friend had this as his gamer name and I just copied him :) no bigger meaning behind it :D sorry to disappoint

It's all good! I just thought there might be a story behind the name, and had to ask.

Dennis

Hi Esteban,

Just following up... In the event there were any lingering doubts, I added Kyle's response to my question above.

Good news!

Dennis

thanks for keeping me updated! appreciate it

You are correct Dennis!

You do not have to use your affiliate link for any WA content that you are the author/creator of. Using the bare link will pass through your affiliate ID. I have several referrals that came through links to my WA blogs that I did not use an affiliate link on.

As for the comment link, that is the only one you will not get credit on if it is on a blog you are not the author/creator of.

Excellent Robert!

The little bit of testing that Angela and I did (below) showed no affiliate information turned up in the URL bar when we arrived at a WA destination we'd created (blog, question, tutorial, or profile). Does the affiliate link magic happen behind the scenes?

I had a hunch the comment link might fall short of the mark. Ah well.

Are links back from social shares also part of the affiliate link magic at WA as well? It seems to me I read or heard that was the case somewhere (Jay's Live Video Classes?), but I couldn't find confirmation of it when I tried to locate it again.

Thanks for chiming in!

Dennis

Yes, it goes on behind the scenes. The affiliate ID does not have to appear in the URL bar because all of us who are the authors of content get credited if someone joins through content. I do not remember where but Kyle says in boot camp that you do not need to use your WA affiliate link if you are the author of the WA content.

It doesn't matter where you share your authored WA content, on your website or social media, it is not an affiliate link and will not be seen as such. But it will act as one if someone joins WA from within it and you will get credit.

Thanks for clearing the air again Robert.

I know you'll be nice when answering any topic you wade into, but you won't candy coat things overly much. If something needs saying, I know you'll say it - which make your response that much more valuable.

Appreciated!

Dennis

Hi Robert,

Just before your response in this thread, I'd sent Kyle a PM to sort out the question above. I just added his response to the bottom of my question (above) - but you already knew what the answer would be!!

Dennis

This is why I always preach to write your WA blogs, questions, and training the same way you write your website content, using keywords and in the proper places so you get rankings.

I'm a little slow piecing things together Robert - but the good news is that I can be taught!

Dennis

Like Marion I don't leave stuff to chance. Why would I?

It's so easy to use the correct link. WA provides link tracking (see left nav bar). If you don't like the WA one there are hundreds of alternatives such as goo.gl and bit.ly (which I use a lot).

Hi Chris -

I'm just sufficiently new to social media that I don't want any overt affiliate linking to be the cause of a suspension or ban, and it seemed like the Wealthy Affiliate linking system had that base covered.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any affiliate information had been added when checking as Angela suggested.

Fortunately, Marion reminded me of the linking and tracking capabilities of Pretty Link, and now you've chimed in with goog.le and bit.ly!

What a great place to swap problems and solutions!

Dennis

Glad to be of help.

Just a tiny note - it's 3.2 for a reason, therefore goo.gl (not goog.le)

Go easy on me Chris! I've already confessed to having to hunt and peck, and now you're nicking me for fat-fingering the link! ;)

Dennis

It's official Chris.

Kyle just responded to my PM, confirming that you can put a bare link in a social share or rank it in a Google search, and the affiliate credit is yours if someone clicks on that link and subsequently joins WA.

Gotta love it. I pasted his response above for your perusal.

Dennis

I understood the same thing as you Dennis (from Kyles lesson and also another post which I will try to find for you!). Have you found out if you are right for sure yet?! Sarah

I'll post what I find back here Sarah - stay tuned!

Dennis

We're good to go Sarah!

Kyle just wrote back that if someone clicks on a bare link that come up in a Google search or one that you put in a social share, you'll get affiliate credit if that person joins WA after landing on content you authored. I pasted his response at the bottom of the question above.

Beautiful!

Dennis

Dennis. I thought so - and thank you so much for letting me know! Really thoughtful of you.

Sarah

Good question Dennis. I prefer to be sure about affiliate links so I use PrettyLink Lite to create shortened links which pass muster on YouTube and social media. It's just too important to leave to chance. PM me if you need more details. ~Marion

It's official Marion. Someone clicking on a bare links in a social share or on a link that comes up in a Google search will be credited to your account if they sign up to WA after visiting the linked content you wrote.

Kyle's response is pasted at the bottom of the answer above. Aint that grand?!

Dennis

ok, I took the url from above (address bar) for your comment and went to FB
http://screencast.com/t/rAE1bZ2DP
this is how it looked when I clicked post (changed settings to only me lol)
http://screencast.com/t/x3lRwjWVk2
you'll see that once posted, I hover mouse over link and below you see the same url I copied, no affiliate link
http://screencast.com/t/0qQBEROv0A
but if I copy the link from the affiliate box, it is the same url in address bar, linked to the comment but my affil ID is added at the end
http://screencast.com/t/bBoDcKyATA2y
I post it on FB, it looks exactly the same, but you can see my affiliate ID in the link
http://screencast.com/t/tyAUD9PoDXIb

Great idea Angela!

I went to Google and searched for my profile in another browser using "link:http://wealthyaffiliate.com prestones" but when I clicked through I didn't get an affiliate link in the URL bar - I just got the popup to sign up after a moment or two.

I did the same thing for a blog I'd posted, and once again got a popup to sign up, but there was no affiliate link in the URL bar.

Time to ask the powers that be! Stay tuned here and I'll post back with whatever I find out. Given that it's Saturday, perhaps we'll hear back on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Dennis

did you use incognito? I'm going to look at that now.

guess I'm not quite getting what you are trying to discover. I went to an incognito window and pasted the link to your pofile ( https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/prestones ) in to search and got this
http://screencast.com/t/h7A1uoWmDIjs
so you want to know if you share your profile link, will it have your affil ID? without using the affil button?
I don't think that is possible. If you want to ensure your affil id is in it then you have to use the white button.

Hi Angela -

No, I'm logged in using Firefox, so I checked using Chrome - where I wasn't logged in. I'm interested in being able to send folks to WA without an affiliate link on occasion.

For example, using an affiliate link in a social share is a good way to get your account banned! Being able to simply link to a target page and have "the system" here at WA know the link came from you would be great. You'd have a chance at a conversion (and commission), with no danger of a ban.

I'll let you know how it all works out...

Dennis

oh ok, I think I am following you now lol. Thing is, it won't work. Without your affiliate ID in it, there's no way for WA to give you credit. I know social media has cracked down on affil links but there are ways around. For example, in private groups, I have shared links and they were not removed. I would imagine because it is a closed group and people have the choice to join or leave.
another way around it is to link to something you wrote on your site which has your WA affil link in it.
Is that what you were meaning?

Correct. I'm still relatively new at WA, and I'm still exploring the nooks and crannies of the system. I've also got a lot of training (and blogging) in front of me!

Dennis

no worries. I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything (wouldn't want to either - who wants all that responsibility lol)
and I'm still learning too, it never stops :)

you dont share the url, you share this
http://screencast.com/t/QB3IrbFbRSns

Yes, that was exactly my question Angela. I just found that Kyle's mention that you DO get affiliate credit for any content you create (posts, questions, or tutorials) - even if they click through on a bare link. See his comments at Still researching and polling for answers...

Dennis

I've just read the article several times, and at no time did I see anything different from the stated "earn affiliate credit for this by default (as the content creator)". It is clear to me, from the content and context, that it refers to MY post about MY article using MY affiliate link.

The wording is "content creator", and no mention of "bare link".

Not a hint about anything being automatically added to a non-affiliate link.

Hi Chris -

It's the graphic in Kyle's lesson that gives me the impression that there is some affiliate connection. In fact, that seems to be the point of the lesson.

Kyle indicates that Google has given WA status as an authority site, and indexes WA frequently. He goes on to say that by contributing to the WA community (through posts, questions, and tutorials), we benefit when someone clicks through to our content after finding it in a Google search.

Given that Google's links wouldn't have any affiliate information associated with them when the surfer clicks on the WA link, it seemed reasonable to assume that Kyle and Carson had worked some magic. The nature of that magic would ensure that any incoming traffic to content you author is credited to you - if the surfer signs up for membership at WA.

I understand that the system may track the surfer's click and subsequent activity using something other than affiliate information tacked on the end of the link, but it's also possible that the capability has been deprecated or broken during ongoing system updates - so I thought I'd ask.

I'll post back here when I hear back from Kyle - stay tuned!

Dennis

Thanks for the more detailed info. Excellent question (now that I completely understand it lol - took me a bit). I look forward to hearing the answer.

The verdict is in Angela - Kyle's response is pasted at the bottom of the question above.

If we have a bare link in a social share, or someone clicks on a link that comes up in a Google search, the author of the linked content gets credit if the visitor signs up for WA.

How excellent!

Dennis

cool, thanks for letting me know :)

Aha! I think I see where you are picking up the inference. It's in that magic little phrase you used "... we benefit when someone clicks through to our content after finding it in a Google search."

The key, I think is in that bit of the line that says "clicks through ... to OUR content".

Once they are on "OUR content" (not someone else's content) then, naturally, our affiliate info is already in it. It does not need to be "picked up".

I don't know about the comment, if that's also will tranfer into an affiliatelink, the profile does, and further the affiliate buttons on top.

Hi Loes!

Just to make sure I understand you - are you're confirming that a bare link back to my profile will have my affiliate information put on it, and that bare links in social shares will get affiliate information too?

My apologies, I'm just not clear about the affiliate buttons on top.

Thanks for jumping in!

Dennis

Yes, but only the bare link from your profile, only this link https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/prestones
for blogs and tutorials you need to use your affiliate button for links

Hi (again) Loes

I just ran across this from Kyle in Level 4 Lession 7 "If someone clicks on this [pictured in the Lesson] and joins Wealthy Affiliate because of this post, I earn affiliate credit for this by default (as the content creator). Over time this could add up to a significant amount of income if you are regularly contributing to the community with posts, questions, and training content."

It seems Kyle is telling us we'll get affiliate credit for those that come to our content from an external link.

Now that I've got my teeth into it, I won't be able to put it down until I know...

Dennis

I will go over this training, thanks Dennis

Hi Loes -

Kyle just confirmed that we do get affiliate credit for anyone that clicks through to content we've authored (blogs, tutorials, etc) - even if the link they clicked has no affiliate information on it. I pasted Kyle's response below the question at the top of this page.

Certainly great news for linking from social media!

Dennis

Thanks for biting your teeth in the matter :)

Sharing outside if WA use your affiliate link. But yeah inside of WA you're solid.

Thanks for jumping in Benjamin!

Loes added to the thread here too, and I just found a bit from Kyle that seems to indicate that if someone clicks on a Google link for content you created (Kyle's words - post, questions, or tutorials), you'd get affiliate credit for that site visitor when they clicked through. See Stay tuned right here for more...

Dennis

Kyle just weighed in Benjamin. If someone clicks on a bare (non-affiliate) link that lands on content you authored, you'll get affiliate credit when they sign up at WA.

I posted Kyle's response at the bottom of the question above.

How great is that?!

You can do anything you want to do on your own website. The rules #10 and #12 only apply within WA. So you can set up your email list and market to the people who opt-in on your website. You are not allowed to promote anything at WA but you are free to take part in the give and take comment thread and some of the WA members will visit your website. ~Marion

Thanks Marion! It's been a long day, and I've been even more susceptible to confusion than usual (is that possible?)

I appreciate your weighing in and helping sort it out!

Dennis

If you are paying more than $30/mo for you marketing tools you are paying to much. Checkout Bill808.biz for a suite of tools including webinar, opt-in list, autoresponder and video email.

You caught me about a year too late Bill!

I've already spent _way_ too much money for tools, systems, eBooks, and advice. I even have a plugin I purchased outright to handle duties as an autoresponder and to send newsletters.

Fits right in with my "day late and a dollar short" way of life!

Dennis

BTW...I am not so sure of your business model as in "coaching for free"...do you plan to have a membership fee?

No membership fee, Peter. I'd like to set up a funnel which has a bit amount of information available to any site visitor, but which has more information available if you register (for free) on the site. The act of registering puts you on an email list.

If that registered visitor wants to delve deeper (as I'd encourage in my autoresponder), they would follow a registration link to my custom home page for WA - and hopefully they'd register ;)

They would get access to still more free information on my site, as well as getting access to all the information available to all the free information available at WA. I know that now and forevermore the amount of free information on my site would pale by comparison... but work with me here!

Finally, if they become a Premium member, they would have access to still more information on my site, as well as everything WA has to offer. Just by way of example, I'm working on putting together 4-6 page summaries of all the live trainings for those registered on my site who become premium.

I hope to be able to use cookies on the respective users' machines to differentiate the free members at WA from the Premium members, and to base site access on those cookies. Still have a number of wrinkles to work out though.

There would be no fee, regardless of access level. I'll probably set up a store once I've got the big pieces in place for the system I've outlined above.

That's my plan at the moment - subject to change at any moment!

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

These are actually very good questions. So let me show you what I am doing, ok?

First. No one likes spamming. But everyone is cool with a good offer that they might benefit from.

So. As the saying goes. You need a blog, a squeeze page and an autoresponder. So many people have told me this that even I am starting to believe it.

I also think it is best to have a store. Somewhere that people can actually buy what it is you are selling as a store as well as to feature the products on a blog.

Now...if you put a link somewhere next to some useful comments that draws people to your site and they double opt in? No one is going to accuse you of "stealing" contacts.

As long as you make a comment that is useful and sensible people are pretty ok because we are all adults and following a link and putting your name and email address in it is hardly "coercsion" or "stealing".

If people are interested in what you have to offer then they will opt in.

If they are not interested in what you have to offer they will not.

Once they have double opted in you can email them just fine. They can leave the list at any time. Personally, I use Get Response because that is what comes with iPAS2 which I also promote. I gather there are not so many people who have both WA and iPAS2....but hey, it's all interesting and fun, right?

If someone from WA wants to join your list? Cool.

If someone from your list joins WA? Cool.

No one is going to hang you for emailing someone you have the email for who happens to take a future action. Similarly, even here, if someone says "well this is what I am doing as an example" no one is going to take issue with that.

Sure...someone might "complain" but you can pretty much ignore them because someone will always complain about EVERYTHING, am I right?

So...for example....these sorts of comments would be considered ok because I took the time to make a useful comment. If I just posted these links it would be far less ok.....so this is an example of doing what you are talking about.

I have recenlty decided to build an Internet Marketing Mastermind Team as an MLM to take on board young disadvantaged men and to give them the skills they need to be successful in IM. There are so many young and disadvantaged men out there that no one cares about....so it is a project that I am pleased to be able to now take on.

My site for men called ManBook is doing great but it is "politically incorrect". So I created a second site that is on my old personal domain. I also have a team site under my German name of Joschua Boehm. All of them have email forms that people can sign up for.

So I built a store in woocommerce to offer great deals on the best products that Internet Marketers might like to pick up. These are almost ALL products I use so I am not putting up rubbish, right?

Eg.
http://www.peternolan.com/my-shop/
http://www.peternolan.com/shop/affiliates/get-response/

Of course there have to be some freebies.
http://www.peternolan.com/freebies/

Then you can get more "creative" with really cool products like Traffic Zombie. This is a way of giving away a freebie for confirmed likes on facebook and tweets on twitter. I got in on the USD47 launch lifetime deal. I was amazed people did not stampede this thing...it is getting me LOTS of shares.

http://www.peternolan.com/2015/06/04/get-more-free-traffic-with-traffic-zombie/

So...see what I mean?

Sure, I am commenting on your question and I am including some links....but I am also offering you some ideas on what are good ideas for your site and where the "line" is drawn for making comments.

If you add value? No one will be concerned.

If you spam people? You will draw some complaints...

Ok?

Got it...

I've finally met someone here that writes comments the length of mine. Thanks much for the effort! I had to follow you, just to see how you keep track of all the moving pieces.

Excellent response - and much appreciated!

Dennis

Those rules apply to your posts on Wealthy Affiliate, not your own websites. You can do whatever you want on your websites.

Good catch Jim! I was looking at it from the wrong perspective, and trying to jam a square peg into a round hole - story of my life. Looking at it as your site / my site all the pieces fall into place.

Now all I need to do is sort out the API / cookies issues. All in good time, I suppose.

Thanks again!

Dennis

I'm not an expert at this and I guess Kyle and Carson would be the only ones who could answer that question but, you may be over thinking things a bit,
If someone visits your site and signs up for your email list, especially with a double opt in system. They are your customer and you can email them.
If they join WA, you already had a relationship with them prior to them joining,
If your uncle joins WA, would you be banned from contacting him? I think not

I know it's a spacy set of questions I've answered, and that not communicating to family and friends who are members is definitely a bit over the top. Further, email marketing is part of the foundation of our online businesses.

Yet - the rules see kinda hard and fast.

Stay tuned, and thanks for sounding off in response!

Dennis

Absolute build your list, This is all about building your business.
Best practice is to offer something for their details like a newsletter or gift.
Insist on them giving you their email and name for a reason, integrity and permission are essential.
Once someone has given you their email & details it is between the two of you and WA isn't responsible.
Kyle would be able to be more detailed in his response about the legalities of any WA rules

We just came across Jovo's website today. A post in there might be able to help you.
You'll have to hunt down your earlier responses, but Jovo's post will show you how to link everything up together.

"How to insert links in the post"
It's about the 9th post down in the blogroll.

Hope this helps, and hope Jovo doesn't mind us giving this info to you.

Thanks for linking to an explanation of anchor links! Now I just need to know what the name of the anchor is, and I'll be golden. I sent a PM to Carson to see if he can shed some light on the matter. I'll post back here to let you know the outcome.

Much appreciated!

Dennis

Ask a friend. The person who initiated the discussion will have received an email saying "Prestones has responded to..." and the link in that email will be the one you're looking for. Other than that my head is empty too. ~Marion

That's a great workaround Marion. Thanks!

I sent a PM to Carson to see if he could enlighten me; stay tuned.

Dennis

I haven't heard back from Carson yet. It's been over a week now - perhaps he's on vacation :)

I did find a way to get a link to a specific comment or reply, but you need to be able to find the comment first - so there's still that issue.

Once you HAVE located your comment or reply, you can right click on it and "Inspect Element" in the local menu that appears. A div of the form

Your target URL is therefore https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/ [link within WA]/comment/xxxxxxx

For example, to get to my earlier comment to your reply, the link is: Beauty!

Dennis

Sweet! I never thought of looking at the source code.

The best way that I know of is when you go to the URL and you are at the top of the page, hold down CTRL + F - then type Prestones into the little box, bottom left, and it will bring you to the last comment you made. Keep hitting enter will allow you to scroll through all the comments you made on that page
Hope this helps

Thanks Forrest! Perhaps I'll have to resort to the control + f (or command + f for Macs) when I'm trying to direct folks to an earlier response.

On the other hand, if that's the worst thing that I have to deal with today, I've done well!

Much appreciated!!

Dennis

Either that or you can go to the response and copy and paste it for them

Another great suggestion Forrest. Sadly, for the most part I come up short when trying to find the response here on WA myself - so I can provide a link to it.

All too often the answer exists somewhere between my ears - lost in space!

Dennis

Go to that response you made, and copy and paste the url that appear in the search bar in your browser. That is what I do. Hope that helps Dennis.

Bishop

Thanks for the reply David. Grabbing the URL from the browser window gets me back to the thread, but unfortunately it doesn't get me back to the actual comment. For example, if I'm trying to get someone to a comment I made at you'll just be put back at the top of the page, wondering what I was referring to.

What I'd like to do is to be able to add the bit at the end of the URL to get someone to the comment I'm referring to. Using the same example URL as above (with the added /comment/xxxxxxx), would be That gets you to a comment BenORourke made - and even highlights the comment. The comment I'm trying to get to is the one above that however.

Sooo... any clues as to how to pick out a comment and get the URL that will take you back to that comment?

Thanks for the effort.

Dennis

Now know what it is you would like to accomplish.I may be wrong, but I think it can't be done. This one is for Kyle and Carson Dennis. Send in a support ticket. It would be great though. It will ve saa lot of time and repetition. good luck.

Click on the world button at top right of page. Select "View All" and scroll down to the one you want.

Thanks for getting back with me Chris.

My problem is that I'm trying to get someone to a comment I made 6 days ago at I sorta solved the problem - for that thread.

When I click on the globe icon, select "view all", and look at the resultant list, I'm overwhelmed. In most instances I won't know how long ago a comment was made, and it seems like anything over a few hours old will be buried in the ongoing site activity.

In addition to simply finding old threads I've participated in, I'm trying to direct someone to a specific comment in that thread. For example, has "/comment/4624933" appended to the link at the top, although you can't see it in my response here - unless you hover over the lower link and look in the lower left corner of your browser. This modified link gets you to a comment BenORourke made - and even highlights the comment. The comment I'm trying to link to is the one above that however.

My problems remain:
- finding threads I've previously participated in, and
- linking to a specific comment in that thread

Help!!

Dennis

That's probably as good as it gets. I don't know any other tricks.

Thanks for the effort Chris. Much appreciated!

I'd like to be able to make screen shots and videos from the perspective of a free member. Is there any rule against creating a second account as a free member

You do not need to create a free account to see any of that. Just go into a private browsing mode and access the URL you want to see as a free member. Depending on which browser you are using select the following.

Google Chrome you must be in Incognito Mode
Firefox you must be in Private Browsing
Internet Explorer you must be in InPrivate Browsing

That works a charm Robert! Thanks much for jumping in and putting me on the right path :-)

Dennis

You are welcome Dennis.

Of course you can create a second free account, but you have to do it from a different IP address. System allows only one account per IP address.

The good news is that it's easy to change my IP since it's dynamic - all I have to do is reboot the modem. Given the number of dynamic IPs out there, the system requirement seems... odd. One of life's little mysteries, I guess.

Thanks, Michael.

Appreciate the thought, Loes. I didn't think it would be a problem.

I like the innovative way you think.

Yep, that's me. Always thinking at right angles to reality! :-)

Dennis

I always called that "thinking out of the box."

you can log out of your account and click on your affiliate link to WA and get your screen prints from there if you want or you can sign up with another email account, but you will not get credit for it because they will both be from the same IP address or computer.

Good idea, Tommy. I'll give it a go and see if anything blows up on me!
