See my various updates below.

(February 2015) I'm retired and in my 60's now. I have maintained personal websites just for fun for quite some time.

I have been a webmaster since 2004. I did it for fun and am self taught. In other words, lots of trial and error. Mostly error. Hey, if there is a way to do it wrong then I can find it.

I'm at the point where I want to expand the content of my websites and monetize those sites. This is where WA is invaluable.

After poking my nose around online, I ended up here at WA. Does this program work? After being here for quite some time I can say without question, "where was Wealthy Affiliate in my early years?" This is an amazing resource and learning tool. I'm really impressed with the amount of knowledge and training here. The support, encouragement, and mentoring is like nothing I have ever seen before online.

(April 2015) I really gave the Wealthy Affiliate program a good hard look. I checked out every nook and cranny and you know what? WA is for real. It's not a scam, MLM, or get rich quick scheme. There is no push to sell you more products and features. There is just a ton of information, training, and site building tools.

I'm the world's biggest skeptic and I have to say Wealthy Affiliate has passed the smell test. I'm so impressed that I decided to renew my membership to a yearly subscription. That's pretty impressive since I'm such a tight wad.

If you are concerned that WA is legitimate then don't be. This is the real deal. If you want to become an online entrepreneur then here is the place to start. Trust me, you won't be sorry you joined ... GrampaMike

p.s. if you haven't already joined Wealthy Affiliate then here is the link to do so:
my.wealthyaffiliate.com/createaccount?a_aid=98bcabf5

(August 2015) I'm pleased with my progress. I couldn't have done this without my WA training and tutorials. The community has been great at support and answering my silly questions.

I have 5 websites up and running as of this date. Love the way they look. I'm excited about how user friendly my websites are for my site visitors. My sites are so professional looking. Traffic is building on my sites. You know, I was so impressed with the WordPress platform that I decided to move my flagship website from my old site host to here at WA using the WordPress platform. I built that website in 2004 and never intended on moving it. I think WordPress is a great platform for running a business.

I passed the 1000 member mark in my personal WA member network about a month ago. Followers join my network everyday now. Hmmmm, they must like me or something.

My WA rank is in the top 100 now. Was kind of fun to see if I could do it.

I made some really good friends here from around the world. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only crazy loco person out there, LOL.

I started in February here at WA. It's now August and guess what? I'm still having fun. "Hey Mikey, he likes it," as the Life cereal commercial goes.

(December 2015) I'm really excited about 2016. This next year I will finish my transition to highly professional looking websites. I'm so please with the progress I have made.

My newsletter is now growing with new subscribers.

My revenue stream is taking off. I'm sitting on dozens of ebook manuscripts which I will get edited and published to my sites. Selling ebooks is turning out to be an exciting project for 2016.

The affiliates I'm working with are different. I'm focusing on affiliates which pay a recurring commission like WA does. An unusual approach to affiliate marketing but I can see some great passive income potential.

I'm about to implement a new marketing plan for 2016 which should put my revenue sky high when in place. We will just have to see how this goes.

I'm really looking forward to 2016.

I have had an online business presence since 2004. Lots of mistakes in the beginning.

What got me through is patience and persistence. I think that is the corner stone that got me through the rough times.

Hang in there. This method of making money online does work. It just doesn't happen overnight.

Take care.

Hi Mike,
How have you been? Haven't heard from you so thought I would reach out and ask for your help.

I appreciate being a part of your community all your help and comments in the past and wanted to share my latest with you.

I totally re-did my site and got a new domain name http://learnhowtomakemoneyonline.net

I broke out my "whistles and bells" on this one. LOL I tried to not leave anything out as far as monitization, lead capture, linking, etc

Please, Tell me what you think, especially the free classes page on menu navigation, I built the site with optimize press.

Since, you have been at this for a while, what would be the top 3 ways you would suggest to drive traffic to my sites?

Be Blessed as You Continue to Bless Others,

jd

My goodness. You sure did a great job revamping your website. I stopped by the site and did some poking. around. I liked your article on Maslow and the Internet.

Nice. The presentation of the free lessons is compelling. Everyone wants to know "how to ..." and I think you hit this sector perfectly.

Building traffic is a whole new ball game since I first started in 2004. Back then it was just organic traffic from the search engines and trying to get ranked on page one.

Today, with the advent of social media then this is the second way I drive traffic. I'm big on Twitter with Facebook right behind. All my Twitter posts automatically post on my personal Facebook account. I will be setting up a Facebook account just for my business soon.

Finally, submitting to website directories has always been one of the tools many webmasters don't utilize enough. People really do use those directories.

If you need to contact me then send me a private message. I'm not monitoring comments now days so I am liable to miss your message unless it is a PM.

Hi Grampamike, you have accomplished so much for being here only 1 year! I am trying to get into affiliate marketing and I did sign up as an Amazon associate but I can't decide what would be the best way to promote their products. I'm not sure if you are an Amazon affiliate but they have a ton of rules and I am afraid that anything I do will break some rule some where. I have a live e-commerce site called healthydogsupply.com and this is currently my only live site. I just don't really know if it would be good or bad to add a menu option called 'Amazon' on my menu so their products would be separate from mine and then have that menu option open up a page with an Amazon "aStore" on it with some best selling dog products, as my site is all dog products and currently has no affiliate links on it. Would you mind taking a look at my site (it's not on WA) and see if you think that site would be ok to add either the "aStore" or some links. Thanks so much You really add a lot to the WA community and I love your dog!!

Hi Barbara. Great to hear from you.

You have an excellent site up and running. It's well laid out and easy to navigate. Your home page looks professional. Very nice visuals. Uncluttered. User friendly. Good potential as an eCommerce site.

Here is a little bit of improvement you may want to consider. I looked at the "about us" page. I will bet you will get more sales if that page is converted into something more personal.

The about me page is the place to develop trust and rapport with your customers. The about me page is where I talk to my customers as if they are sitting in my living room and we are having a nice chat.

Instead of using the word "our" as in "our mission" or "our team," here is the perfect place to make it personal by saying "my mission" and "my team." Also, include a picture of yourself on that page. A picture is your way to develop rapport.

The goal is to communicate, I (a real person) am here to help you. As a customer who owns a dog, I like to deal with the small mom and pop stores instead of the big box stores. Small stores tend to care about me and my dog rather than be an impersonal corporation interested in sales over rapport.

You are right. I have been at WA for one year. However, I started my first online business in 2004.

Yes, I am an Amazon affiliate. Been with them for years. I used to use aStores but stopped. I got few conversions using an aStore. These days, I publish on my sites individual products from Amazon. For example, I promote hand selected business books on my business sites. I also have one entire page on my health site devoted to the discussion of boil treatment which ends with an Amazon link to the brand of Tea Tree Oil I use.

I have never run into complications with Amazon's rules after all these years. Just use the affiliate links they provide and all should be good.

The best way to promote Amazon products is to write a product review then recommend the product. The best are products you use so you can give an honest opinion.

Some manufacturers or vendors will send you free products to try in exchange for a review. This way you can try the product and give an honest review then link to Amazon so folks can buy the product.

Adding a separate catalog page just for Amazon products you want to promote is a good idea. You could link your reviews to that page to let folks know you have more to offer.

We can discuss how to use Amazon affiliate links later. Just send me a private message so I can go into detail. I'm running out of space in this comments area.

Having a page devoted to Amazon "best sellers" is a great idea too.

Finally, your site is perfect for adding Amazon affiliate links.
Reply
bjdluna Premium
Hi GrampaMike,

Thanks so much for looking at my pet products site, and for your suggestion. I can do that for sure change the About me to make it personal. Thanks for the tip on using the "aStore". I will stay away from those. I will send you a PM because I just remembered you said you are running out of room here ...so continued in a PM.

Barbara

Hi GrampaMike,
Your affilieate links are so perfect and seem to go with the flow of each of your topics on the health related site. I had a hard time even determining which ones were links and that to me is the way it is supposed to be. So Maybe I could call that Amazon link "best sellers" and do some type of review or writeup on each of the products that I am linking to. Do I have the right idea here?

I can't begin to thank you enough for your help! I was really stuck on that and tomorrow I'm going to figure out all my content for that new page and maybe if you don't mind I could run it by you to make sure it looks good. Would that be ok with you?

Thanks again so much for your help,

Barbara

I agree completely that WA is the best place in town and the help I am getting is quite amazing. I think it's great how we all help each other whatever our experience or knowledge. I spent my career as a headteacher, so motivational stuff and English are my thing. So help with reviews and editing is a skill.

I am confident that WA will provide key knowledge as I dive into online marketing. I am also going to meet people face to face and try some door to door sales. I can tell you that it is true. Computer did come from aliens.

I started selling personal computers back in 1978. Commercial home computers was just a brand new industry getting on its feet back then.

We got a shipment in one day at our store. Our electricity went out, there were bright lights coming in the window with a loud humming sound all around us.

Suddenly, the electricity came back on and the bright lights and humming were gone. All that was left were some personal computers left behind on the floor.

Yep, those were aliens. A Close Encounter of the computer kind.

Might have been the UPS delivery guy with a flashlight but I don't think so.

Mike, I went to a famous English public school on a science training course years ago and we were "made" to attend the first ever BBC computer course for schools. I remember only three things about the course, we were taught by precocious boys of 13 who I had taught in their previous school, I learned that these computers were less powerful than a modern pocket calculator and I was convinced they would never catch on! Your post "I'm number 1" is a great encouragement and tells me I have been here for a month and only 1 web site so far, so I better get cracking. At least I have moved up in the Rank, so I must doing something right.

Here is something I wrote today It shows you have spent a lot of time on your sites, so I have much to learn from you. I see you like technology, so any unique angles you can suggest to monetize my site would be most appreciated.

Oh, I LIKE and FOLLOW as you do.

I know I'm a genius but it's nice to hear someone else say it.
No, I'm just kidding.

Seriously, your comments mean a lot to me.

Here is an "angle" for monetizing;

One technique I use for putting a lot of different affiliate links on my site yet not be penalized by Google for being a spammy affiliate site; Hope that helps.

Hi Mike - I have tried Yoast on a post, wow! It's a-m-a-z-i-n-g! I was no where near with my post. When I got done, I was so clear, in my mind, on the idea I wanted to put across. This is going to help me more with my writing. Each chapter will be a keyword and I will use Yoast style to write it! My heart is having a somersault! Tee Hee! :)))

Hi Mike,

You know your way around the net...Good for me hehe, as well as many others here at WA...I too appreciate the global aspects of this place...I have been a wanderer for many years now...

Personally, in regards to WA, I am focused on just having the net/hosting services work well for us, because it will add some "bang" to the old style bricks and mortar businesses I am involved with/operate...That is one of my purposes in being here/a member of WA...

I look forward to gaining new knowledge from your years of experience....My team is involved in a couple of projects that are rolling out now, where a decent site and Google/Bing rankings is crucial...I want to learn how we can most effectively use the internet for these projects...Plus I want to understand what my team is talking about lol!

So...bottom line, I have added you here and will check in regularly to see what can be helpful! Regarding quid pro quo, not sure how much I can offer on my side...I am really a newbie and learning daily from people like yourself! Sorry...but thanks too!

Cheers!

Dave

Ya know, that's the beauty of WA. Folks are eager to help and ask nothing in return.

Google says they are looking for sites that have lots of valuable content. Good SEO for sure but it's the content or articles which sell ourselves to the search engines and customers.

Long ago, I got so frustrated with SEO that I threw up my hands and said, "forget it." I decided I would write what I wanted and the heck with Google. If they didn't like me then that is just fine. Of all things, my pages started ranking in the top 10. To this day, do a Google search on "pacemaker candidate" and there I am at number 7 right behind some big names in the industry. Names like a renowned hospital, I think the US National Institutes of Health, a pacemaker manufacturer, WebMD, etc. Been at number 7 for years. Even a little guy like me can blow away the competition. I don't recall how many hundreds of thousands of websites rank behind me.

One of the things folks want to know is how to rank well. I always recommend everyone go to the Google webmaster tools and look up the Google website guidelines. Getting Google's attention and ranking high in search results isn't as hard as people make it out to be sometimes.

Feel free to send me a private message if you need some questions answered. I'm here to help. I always answer question from 1 to 365 days later, LOL.

hi grampamike, i liked ur profile i joined as a premium member a few days ago but i was wondering if i started my website with the 2 free ones just to build a test site since i have never built a website before, would i be able to transfer it over to a premium website if the outcome was something i was pleased with and it is getting good traffic?
Reply
grampamike Premium
Well, the simple answer to your question is yes. Yes, but.

As a premium member, you can set up 50 websites at no extra cost. You get 25 siterubix websites and 25 top domain (,com) websites. The sites are included in your premium subscription so there is not extra charge for those sites.

The term premium only signifies you are a paid member of WA. There is no "premium" website.

Your free sites were built using a subdomain
(yoursite . siterubix . com)
As a premium member you can now purchase a domain name at a registrar like GoDaddy or Namecheap. You point your domain name at your free site that you have created and suddenly your free site becomes your .com, org, or whatever you registered. For example, xyz . com or mysite . com, etc.

Once you connect your .com or .org domain then WA automatically points all visitors from your free site to your top domain site.

Your siterubix free site that you created is just a starting point until you are ready to purchase your own domain name.

Totally confused? If so then simply contact me and I will be glad to clarify this.

1981 ??? Kind of makes us the older guys on the block.

I was selling Apple II for a computer company in Seattle back then. 16k of ram meant you had an ultimate machine back then.

How times have changed.

I never put much emphasis on affiliate marketing although I did some with it many years ago. My stroke years ago has kept me sidelined until now.

I'm shooting for the moon with my current affiliate marketing endeavors.

Don't be surprised if you find a new wealthy neighbor living near you in Brazil one day. I'm going to do well at this affiliate marketing stuff.

Are you making any money with your health blog yet? In this field, it's a little hard to keep up with the big boys. How do you monetize your site? And how do write for traffic?
Reply
grampamike Premium
The health site has always had some Google AdSense on it. This is where my revenue comes from. However, the site was designed in 2004 for information and not intended to be monetized.

I'm currently moving the site to WordPress since all the content is in place. I will monetize as soon as the site is moved.

This is a huge project. One page of content transfer takes me 4 to 5 hours to edit. All the content needs updating.

I don't worry about the big guys since my pages rank in the top 10 anyway. Right behind some REALLY big guys. It's like setting up a restaurant next to McDonald's. Lots of businesses use this tactic. I get traffic just because folks are looking for the big guys' website.

I can't give advice on what sort of affiliate marketing will work best on this site. However, with all the tricks of the trade I have learned here at WA I should do well. I intend on embedding links into the text in strategic spots. I also have a plug in that will rotate small square banner ads. Looking forward to trying that plug in.

How do I write for traffic? That's a trick I stumbled upon by accident years ago. I found Google loves a story. My pages are my personal story related to my heart disease, pacemaker, and Congestive Heart Failure. I write in a very natural conversational style. Google loves that too.

You see, long ago I would try to perfect the SEO in my content according to the "experts." After a while, I felt like I was playing a game of Twister trying to get the SEO right. One day, I told myself, "the heck with Google, I'm just going to write and if Google doesn't like it then tough!!!" Suddenly my pages began zipping into the top 10.

"Hey Mikey!" "He likes it!!!"

I'm using a similar style on my other sites.

Maybe one day I will be one of the big guys you referred to.

Hi Grandpa Mike, I got my URL through GoDaddy and am using my email through them, but they are not hosting me. I just have the URL and have not done any work to develop the site. I want to switch the emails over to WA and, of course, the web hosting.

If I remember right, GoDaddy charges for a domain email address now days.

Long ago, when I first registered a domain through GoDaddy they added a special perk of a free email account linked to my domain. The account is still free even today. I must have been grandfathered in. Cool, GrampaMike got grandfathered. They don't do that anymore if I remember correctly.

Currently, I don't pay for an email address for my business sites. I set up a free Google Gmail account for my business. My email address is not displayed on my websites.

Instead, I have a "contact us" web form I use. My email address is invisible to the public. I made the form on Jot Form then inserted the form into my site.

It works well and keeps my email address anonymous.

Good morning to you Mike, my name is Ken and I thank you for the follow. Yes you are totally right, WA is for real. I am also self taught and have "guru scars" to prove it. lol I had two websites before joining WA last summer. 2015 is my year that I breakout and start earning an income. Since I am getting close to retiring, it would be nice to have something set to secure my future, since I have lost faith in the government.
I look forward to working with you and I wish you much success!

Hi Ken, thank you for the kind words. Each year that I'm on Social Security, the less I have to spend. We get a "raise" each year of about $15.00 but the cost of living goes up by way more than that. The net result is you have less each year to spend on the cost of living. Each year the amount you can buy (rent, utilities, gas, food) falls further behind. That's why people need to put off going on Social Security as long as you can.

I decided that this year I would monetize my websites as an affiliate marketer. I've had affiliate links on my sites of years but never put emphasis on them. 2015 is my year to break out. I already have the advantage of knowing site design so now I can focus here at WA at learning the finer details or tricks of the trade specific to affiliate marketing. I'm pretty stoked to have found WA.

All my best.

Thank you, Erik. I've tooled around WA and I am really happy to learn WA is the real deal. Now I can knuckle down and learn the tricks of the trade, It's the little stuff I'm looking for. For example, .com and .org, as taught by Kyle, are the top two domain extensions best suited for affiliate marketing. Now that's what I came here to learn.

Thank your for the support and all my best.

Hi Mike
As one old (er) geezer to another, I'd like to say many thanks for your "follow", I appreciate it. I took a moment to read your profile biog and this really made me laugh, because it sounds like me :-)
"I decided to renew my membership to a yearly subscription. That's pretty impressive since I'm such a tight wad."
A, rather belated, welcome to our Wealthy Affiliate family Mike, let's keep in touch.

From one tight wad to another, hi, and thank you for the warm welcome.

You and I speak the same language (skeptic, geezer, tight wad). I went yearly after discovering that I would actually develop a WordPress website here. I promised myself I wouldn't do that but I fell in love with a certain template and that was all she wrote.

I also ran into an SEO plug in that is incredible called Yoast SEO. That one plug in has allowed me to take my web design to a whole new level. I'm seriously considering transferring all my sites to SiteRubix although that would be an enormous undertaking.

Anyway, all my best and thank you for the support.

Hi Gary, thank you for your support. It's funny because I'm a fast learner but getting through the lessons is like wading through quick sand (in a good way). I just get going and all of a sudden I learn a new concept and have to stop and edit my site or sit and stew for a while thinking about what I just learned and how to apply it. It is so much fun to finally begin to put the puzzle pieces together.

Anyway, thanx again for the support.

Mike,

You are quite welcome and the offer is genuine. I know as I went through a lot of the lessons I too had to stop, try to learn more or get some help.

Jay's Live Video class library Top Left can be very helpful if you get hung up on a concept, he walks you through most everything.

I also checked out your site at http://grampamike.siterubix.com/ and I dropped you a comment.
If you have the time feel free to return the favor my site is in my profile area.

Keep Learning, My Best,
Gary

Thanx for the tips. Also, much appreciation for stopping by my new site. You used the SiteRubix URL which is great. It's just http://grampamike.com now but you just confirmed that the old URL is accurately redirecting. Thank you.

I dropped by your site and left my usual funny but appropriate comment.
