I know someone move their site to siteground and said exact same as you so I asked her was it bots - she checked and yes it was

so she put on extra security and all those new comments stopped, next thing she told me she was sandboxed trafficwise for 6 months for moving hosting

Well. In my case it's not bots (I already installed a anti spam plugin and a firewall).

My traffic is unchanged.
Changing hosting shouldn't put you in a sandbox, especially when you change to a faster hosting. And the plan I chose is faster.

I am not trying to undermine the hosting here!
It's still awesome for beginners and works in most cases very well.
I only switched because of problems with a theme.

Then I noticed the thing with the comments...

I have yet another confirmation - sites moved to another hosting starting receiving more comments. So something is wrong here as you say, too strict filter obviously. My own comments almost stopped in the recent months.

Thanks Jovo.

Interesting observation Moritz. I plan to do the same and I shall let you know when/if I observe the difference. Can you recommend some hosting?

Thanks. That would be great.

I am still hosting most of my sites here.
The ones I moved, I moved to siteground (I got a black Friday deal).

Can't complain so far.

Interesting question...I never knew that!
Will need to check this out too...would love to know the outcome of this question!
If Akismet is no good - what plugin would you recommend for a site here on WA?

You don't need any when your site is hosted at WA.
We have protection build in in the hosting.

I am just wondering if it's too strict.

So you are saying I can deactivate akismet?

Yes. If your site is hosted at WA.

If you start a new site, you will notice that Akismet is not installed automatically anymore.

You don't need any spam protection when your site is hosted at WA.

Kyle recommended a plugin called Akismet Ant-Spam. If you don't have one. I recomnend you download it.

You want to read this before recommending Akismet to anyone.

And, as I wrote above, I have a anti spam plugin.
That wasn't the question.

Akismet is still the plugin recommended in the WA training here.
I have had a read of the link you recommended, but from what I see WP Spamshield is no longer available!

So what would you suggest?

It is not. Remove it.

You don't need any spam protection when your site is hosted at WA.

I have had no problems with the comments here at the WA and definitely, none with the URL included. My one site has just started to get comments from the web and they are great quality and very engaging ones at that.
Could it be that since you are at a new host, maybe it's getting different traffic sources and the new host is better suited to your niche? Cause I have no problems at all. Glad it is working out better for you.

Hey.
I didn't say that I got comments with URL. Only mentioned that to point out that my current anti spam protection seems to do its job.

The thing is that you will never know whether WA protection blocks more than it should because you never see the stuff that got blocked.
I would like it better if there was a spam folder so we can approve comments if we think that they are genuine.
My current protection works like that.

It might all be just coincidence.
Just found it weird that I suddenly get more comments after I switched hosting.

My traffic sources are the same and I don't think that that has anything to do with hosting.

Hi there,

who of you is using Thrive Themes with WA hosting?
I recently switched on of my sites to Thrive and noted that the whole backend is super slow now.
Wonder

I have it installed on my beer site, but haven't gotten around to using it. If I remember this week, I'll give it a test. Remind me!

I will. :)

I using Elementor Pro. WA hosting seem to have issue too.

Thanks.

I have been using Thrive Themes and many of its products with WA for quite a while. The speed issue shouldn’t be due to Thrive or WA.

I’ve had slow websites for a while. But I solved it by resizing and optimizing all my images on the site.

So I guess your site speed issue is due to other reasons. Image size is the issue most of the time as it is the factor that affect site speed the most. You can check PageSpeed Insights for more details as well.

I’ll be writing a blog about how I optimize my images and drastically improve my site speed soon. I’ll share the link here :)

My site speed is fine.

It's the backend/Wordpress dashboard that is slow.
So, when I want to write a post or do something with the settings, it takes forever.

The site itself loads almost instantly. Even when the cache is cleared.

Hmm... I have no idea then. You can ask SiteSupport. I believe they'll be able to help you on that.

Anyway, this is the training I was talking about: Maybe optimizing all your images may help.

Hi Moritz,

I also use Thrive and notice that it make my website much slower.
I have with thive architect and Thrive leads 9 Plugins.

It is very pity, because the tools of thrives are very helpful.

Hey.

The site itself isn't slow, actually.
For me it's just the backend/WordPress dashboard.

Yes I have thrive themes and when I first put it on one of my sites it wouldn`t load up properly just kept spinning!

What I found out was that it doesn't like loads of plugins so I put it on another site with about 5 or 7 and it worked fine.

The site I am testing it on only has 7 plugins (3 of those are from Thrive).
Still quite slow.

And you are using WA hosting for the site?

Yes, it is not as good but it does the job

Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Moritz,

Yes I find the Thrive makes it slower. It didn't use to, but I've begun to notice with their recent upgrades (in the past 6 months or so?) so I'm not sure if it's a clash between WA hosting and Thrive...

Same with Thrive's other plugins such as Thrive Architect - I absolutely love it, but I find some features not compatible. I'm not as happy with Thrive as I used to be.

Have you tried Google Developer's Speed Test? It gives a pretty bad result and the main problem is the css (and fonts?) provided by Thrive Themes, which is beyond our control in order to fix :-(

They're working on the brand new theme right now, so I'm hoping it will improve with the speed...

Ray

I might try another hosting. Just to see if it makes a difference.

Yeah, the score on Google Pagespeed could be better.
(62 mobile and 82 desktop.)
But on gtmetrix I have very good scores.
(Pagespeed score 91% and YSlow 80%). So both above average.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Moritz

I pushed the score on Google Pagespeed to 71 mobile and 87 desktop.
And gtmetrix even to 99% for Pagespeed.
That's ok.

My main problem is the backend/WordPress dashboard.
That is painfully slow since I have installed Thrive Themes.

Yes same for me Moritz, my sites are fine with other speed tests....then I've recently found Kyle's post ("don't rely on GTmetrix or Pingdom")........! Sorry, it may be two different speed issues but mine too, the backend - WordPress dashboard has become very slow. Click "All Posts" and wait...click "Add New Post" and wait... When I try with another site with no Thrive Theme installed, and the dashboard speed is normal. (all hosted by WA).

Yes. I usually don't rely on GTmetrix either.
It is just funny that on all sites my GTmetrix score is pretty bad but my Google Pagespeed is ok.

Now, it's the other way around for the first time.

Well, I will try it with another hosting.
