How Your Computer Tells You When It Is Sick.

Hello everybody, here comes my monthly post.

You might wonder where I have been. Some of you will remember I am keeping a low profile since the beginning of January. I wanted to use my time for the lessons, writing, and updating my 2 websites. I can tell you it goes ever so slow but I suppose I will get where I want to be one day.

Computer problems

Something bad/sad happened 10 days ago. In the morning when I switched on my little laptop I was greeted by a loud beep. After a short silence the beep came back but softer to then continue, like on and off. My laptop was functioning but I got a bit worried so I decided to ask Google. I was presented with quite a long list of different beeps and what each might mean. It seems that the beep my computer was making had to do with the Mother-Board. I understand that is the brain so no good.

The clever boys in the computer shop.

In the computer repair shop they did not make a happy face and by the next day I got the verdict, irreparable. The problem is I want a small laptop and also Windows 7. When you buy a new computer it will have Windows 10 and it cannot be changed back into Windows 7. This means I have to get a second hand one. The boys in the computer shop are now trying to find a good second hand one then have them install Windows 7 and so I have the same set-up. I can tell you it is a hassle not to have one's own computer. I am writing this on the computer Michael has but really do not like it. I do not have access to various things like my photo file so working is a bit more difficult. I really hope It will be solved soon and I can continue on my journey.

Hi Taetske,
Things like that are so annoying but it sounds like you have it solved. Perhaps we are lucky that we can progress slowly, without the pressure of needing the money. I figure by the time I really will need the income, I'll have it all sorted out. That's my game plan anyway. Lol
Debbie

Good Morning Debbie,

Thank you for reading my post. It is a hassle when one has to "work" on a different computer. I do not "need" the income either but when I calculate how many hours I have worked for free since the beginning it would be nice to start seeing some compensation.
I should not complain of course as during those hours I have learned so much but most importantly I can freely talk about things I am interested/worried in/about on my websites.
Then the cherry on the cake are all the nice people I meet during this journey. On April 17 we are going to Holland for 14 days and hope to meet Michelle in Belgium and Loes in Friesland, north of Holland. Now that are life experiences earning money can not compare to.

Greetings from a rainy south of Spain, Taetske

So true....exciting to actually meet in person....enjoy your travels...take some pictures to share. Be safe.
Debbie

If the ladies agree I will make a WA post with photos of those 2 meetings. I am very much looking forward to this trip.

Have a nice Sunday, Taetske

Hello Taetske!

By reading the conversation between you and Patsy I see that you have found a solution and you'll soon have a "new" computer.

I can imagine how annoying it was to "loose" your laptop and be forced to leave your "familiar environment".

Have a wonderful weekend, enjoy the buffet with your friends!

Hearty greetings from the north of Switzerland,
:-)

Good afternoon Pernilla,

That is nice of you to stop by.
This time we were only 12 people so we fitted all into the livingroom.
I will be very happy with my "new" computer because the one of Michael is too big and heavy. Also the front area is double as wide as what I am used to so my wrists bump into it when I am writing.

Best wishes from a rainy south of Spain, Taetske

Hi Taetske,

I have a memory stick that I add my pictures to for a backup. Every single picture I have is on it so if anything happens, I can just upload my saved pictures from the memory stick.

I'm sure the computer techs will be able to retrieve your pictures. My daughter had to do this when my older laptop died many years ago. This is when I started to save them.

I too don't like changes and had to get my daughter to help me with Windows 10, such a learning curve.

I hope they can find you another one, there must be other places around that either have one or can help with the search as well.

Crossing my fingers xx♥

Good evening Patsy,

I have the chip of my camera with all the pictures. What I have as photo file on my computer are the selected ones. There will be no problem to put this file on the "new" computer. Before bringing it to the shop Michael also made a copy of everything just in case.
We have the "new" computer chosen already but it will take till coming Wednesday for it to be ready. In the shop they will install it so it looks like the previous one so that is good. In the mean time I have been busy on Pinterest, following people, let's see what happens. Did you also see the other "home-made" pins? Some of them have been saved already. I have finished updating 1 website, still some more work on the other.
Never a dull moment!

Hasta Pronto, Taetske

It's great to hear that Michael made a copy!

I'm glad the computer place will install it to look like the previous one! They really know what they are doing.

The thing with Pinterest I realized at the beginning is how it's not about following people alone, some don't follow the person but a board of their's that they like.

I agree, never a dull moment :)

Hasta Pronto, have a great weekend ♥

I look at the boards and hope to find at least two pins for my boards and then I follow the person. I have done that with people who saved my pins, now some are following back.
Tomorrow we will be 12 people, they all bring something to eat so we build up a small buffet.

You too have a great weekend, Taetske

When you click on 'home' a page comes up with things relevant (mostly) to our boards and I think those are from the people we follow anyway.

Your buffet scenerio is perfect ;)

Thanks I will have a great weekend...working on my website :)

Good afternoon Patsy.

You know something? I have just now discovered that one of my homemade pins was saved 27 times. The one of the rock drawing.
Party was nice but of course too much food, we will be eating for quite some days.

Hasta Pronto, Taetske

Hi Taetske :)

It's great that your homemade pin was saved that many times! I'll have to go check it out.

It's nice having left overs and sometimes they taste better the next day.

Hasta Pronto! ♥

Good Morning Patsy,

The second pin on Off World Visitors is a private photo we took while being on holiday in the US May 2016. The nice thing is that it leads to my other website. You normally need an account for each website with Pinterest and that I did not want to do.
Funny, I had somebody following all my boards. She has quite a lot of followers but only does eye makeup. I cannot find even 1 pin for my boards, what should I do?

Have a good Sunday, Taetske

Hi Taetske,

When we follow someone or they follow us, we automatically follow ALL of their boards and they in turn follow ours.

You don't find a pin on their page to add to your boards. Just follow them back.

I mentioned before that when we click on 'home' a page comes up with pins relevant to our boards and we scroll through adding anything we want to our relevant boards from that page. We also see on that page something from all the others we are following but mainly what is relevant to us so we can choose to add to our boards.

I have over 400 followers and not all of them will have anything relevant to what I have. It's the same with Twitter and Instagram etc.

When I first joined I didn't know how it worked either :)

Thanks, have a good Sunday to you both xx♥

Good afternoon Patsy,

I understand the system but was wondering why she would follow me. We do not seem to have anything in common. Is it rude to not follow back?
We are busy making new pins as the people seem to like them.
I have noticed that the WA stats go up, more visitors.

All the best, Taetske

It's not rude to not follow back.
If I don't want to follow someone back, the only way to get rid of them is the way I showed you to get rid of those other 2...but once I block them I unblock them right after, so they won't be 'there' on your followers list all the time.

Sometimes people follow us to gain lots of followers, for the 'count'.

I have to say that I agree with some of your other comments.

Although it may be unsettling in the short term you would be far better served buying something with Windows 10 and embrace the learning experience rather than stick with what you know and get stuck with technology that will become obsolete.

Best of luck!

Good Morning Elyta,

Thank you for reading my post.
You are probably right just as the other members who tell me to get used to Windows 10. I did try it time ago and had problems. At this moment I still want to continue with what I know as besides of it I have so much other new things I try to understand, it is a bit too much for me.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Hi, so sorry about your computer issues.
I hope you get back up and running soon!

I use a pc in the cloud and store all my files in the cloud as well.
I then connect to the pc in the cloud from any pc as long as I have internet access. The pc in the cloud is automatically patched, updated and is monitored for other issues. No issues after about 2 years. Oh no, I hope I did not jinx myself!

Best wishes!

Good Morning Jesse,

Thank you for visiting.
Your cloud story is beyond me, I have heard about it but do not fully understand.Anyhow, I hope to get a computer by next week and continue working.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Hello Taetske, I’m so sorry to read about your sick computer. Actually, it sounds more like the passing of your computer :(

Sadly it’s a reality that we are all goain’t to face at some point - if it’s not a failing computer it’s definitely going to be an outdated one. I love macs but even those get to the point where the operating system is no longer supported or the h/w starts becoming outdated with all the new updates ie needing more and more memory.

I digress. I do hope you find a good replacement. I tend to lean on the side of a new machine but I totally get your pain of learning new.

Take care
- Gary

Good Morning Gary,

If I were not a newbie/latebie to this internet world I would probably be a lot more flexible. My secondhand "new" computer will be much faster and with more capacity than the one I had so that is good. A new one would be like 1000 Euros and have Windows 10. I will have a slightly older version for 350 Euros with Windows 7.
I have been with WA since Jan. 2017 and have not earned a cent yet so I think a big investment is not justified yet.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Good morning Taetske,

I totally understand. I am very much in the same boat, feeling very new at this game and not having made a dime either. Added to that, I'm not really a windows fan (make that microsoft) mainly because of the updates that I find myself totally lost with. I just can't find anyting as I used to.
I wish you all the very best and hope you get sorted with your machine soon ....

Take care Taetske :)

Good afternoon Gary,

I will have to wait till next week Wednesday to get my "new" computer. I think Euros 350 is enough spending for the moment.

All the best, Taetske

I know you do not want to hear this, but sooner or later every version of Windows will become obsolete and replaced with the new version. It is part of technology. I hate Windows machines, which is why I use Macs. However, using the latest version of the Operating System is imperative for your mental health and the health of your business down the road.

Training your brain to be flexible is part of being a successful entrepreneur.

Technology stops for no one. It is up to us to keep up. As a technology teacher, I have had to train my stubborn brain to just deal with every new release and get used to it as quickly as possible.

I remember what it was like when I first started out and every new update to the Mac OS gave me an anxiety attack, but I learned to adapt so that it becomes second nature.

Do not buy a used or refurbished computer. Please. It never goes well.

Best to you over there in Spain

I will take this lesson to heart. Thank you Wendy. It is very Clear.

Good Morning Wendy,

Thank you for your comment, it made me smile you know.
At the age of 63 I started with a computer against my wish and will. I only used it for emails and photos. This was end of 2013.
Since Jan. 2017 I started making website, who would have thought that. I am a Taurus and they are quite set in their ways so it was a huge change for me.
As I said to Gary my "new" one will be faster and will also have more capacity than my old one so that is an improvement.
As I have not earned a cent yet I do not have a justification to buy an expensive new one.
I bought my little laptop, Acer Aspire second hand and it functioned fine till now so I am confident the "new" one will do like wise.
All in all, I am slow and will get there but a bit later than most of you.
Now I must really smile. I can prove I am flexible after all but in a different field. Michael emigrated from the US to Spain in Aug. 2016. We are 66 and 67 now and after living alone for many years are getting used to living together. Now if that is not proof of being flexible I do not know what is.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Wow! I'm impressed. I'm not sure I could live with anyone again. I enjoy my peace and quiet. You are right, getting used to living with someone is the definition of flexible. Good luck with the computer. :-)

Good afternoon Wendy,

I hope you do not mind but I would like to present us to you,
here comes: All the best, Taetske

I stuck with Windows 7 for a long time and completely bypassed Windows 8. Now I'm using Windows 10 and I like it although I hate Microsoft. It's better than what I saw of Windows 8. I strongly recommend you get a new laptop with Windows 10. Buying a second-hand computer is fraught with problems.

Good afternoon Marion,

You are probably right but I am a Taurus and so set in my ways. When I have "mastered" some computer things, which always takes me ages, I prefer it stays like that. Well, the last word has not been said yet. Thank you for your advice.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Dear Taetske,

It's nice to hear from you. I am sorry your laptop died and you have troubles to get a new one just the way you want it. May I suggest? Instead of going through all the trouble getting second hand computer and loading it with an old operating system, configure your Windows 10 OS in Windows 7's feel and touch. The user interface of the Windows 10 must be the main reason that you don't want it. Is that so? You can google it yourself, but I searched "classic windows 7 setup on windows 10" and here are a Youtube video and an article:
https://youtu.be/OEblJ1UBQF0
https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/make-windows-10-like-windows-7

All the best to you,

~ Julia

Didn't know it was ever possible...:))

Good afternoon Julia,

Thank you for the advice and links which I looked at. To tell you the truth I do not remember the why's or the how's of why I did not like Windows 10. I think it had to do with something I wanted and 10 did not want to do. I was happy with 7 and I was being pestered to upload 10. I always said no untill one day I pressed the wrong button and it started downloading and I could not stop it. In the shop they took 10 out and gave me back 7.
We were looking at a Lenova ThinkPad x220 with Windows 7. They are not made anymore but you can get them second hand.
Anyhow, let's see what happens.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

No, no, I don't even want to think about my computer being sick...what you usually think about, you attract. True, I know a very good computer specialist, a wizard, who can do anything. He comes very quickly, he does everything, but his service is quite costly. So let it work.
I have Kaspersky antivirus,CCleaner and Auslogics Boost Speed programs to ease its work. I would recommend the last one. It finds the problems which might occur and deals with them.I run it one time a week-it's enough.
Good luck to you at finding a good computer:))

Good afternoon Vera,

You know I am a nature person so these technical things nerve me mucho! I was very fond of my little computer. I got it end 2013, bought it second hand from my nice neighbours. It was a little Acer Aspire and it cost me only Euros 150. I even got 8 computer lessons included as I had no clue.
Will call the shop and see what they say this afternoon.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Good luck. But maybe it's time to reteach yourself and try Windows 10. If money permits, I would even buy two. The used one with Windows 7 to work here, and a new one with Windows 10 to learn and have a mild transition.
Just think how convenient it would be to do the training on one screen, and your site on the other....(A tip from not a computer geek...hahaha:)))

Oh, Vera! more machines in my life?
The idea of having 2 next to each other while doing the lessons occurred to me also time ago. Only having Kyle tell you to do this or that did not function well with me. Listening on one computer while doing it on the other is a much better system so there I fully agree with you.
We looked at a Lenova Think Pad x220 they do not make them anymore. Time ago they were sold for close to 1000 Euro. We now might get a second hand for perhaps 200 Euro.
Will go and call the shop now.

All the best, Taetske

Blessings!:)
