Hi, I'm Gary and pleased to meet you. Thanks for having me here in this wonderful community.

The rather mysterious profile name, GCD, is actually just my initials. I tried adding GaryD; GaryDee; and various variations to that but they were taken. Rather than spend too long trying to find a "suitable" available name, I just opted for my initials.

I am married and currently living in Oz. and looking forward to my journey here with Wealthy Affiliate.

Born in Rhodesia (how many know where that is and what it is called now?), I completed my schooling and national service there and then moved to South Africa with my parents and sister.

[Very] soon after marrying my wife, Trish, we moved to Ireland where we lived for 9 years before moving to Australia which is where we now reside. We don't see any more big moves in the future but then again, as I often say "never say never" so let's just say if/when WA starts generating the kind of income I would like it to, anything is possible :)

Interests have included running (cross country at school and a few half marathons, 20 miler's and plenty in-between), cycling, skydiving where I went on to become an instructor, beekeeping, water color painting, sketching (well a deep desire to want to be able to do it). I'd like to try my hand at growing bonsai trees.

Since being made redundant from my last job, I struggled to find work (ironic because I couldn't find work in the field I actually got into Australia for), but it was very probably due to the age group I reached - nifty fifties (imho).

That's when we decided that I should try to make it on my own (we'd often spoken about it, so then was as good a time as any). Well, it's been a really tough ride and still have not 'made it' yet.

Without going into it all, let's just say I really need to make this work now and I do honestly get a sense that WA is the right place for that to happen. I have been a member for a little over a month now and love the community and the training here. I have created my first site in WA and have enjoyed it. I now just need to monetise it and then rinse/repeat.

I have a lot to learn but I am teachable so I would greatly appreciate any help that you can offer.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and wonderful support.

You're an amazing community that I am proud to be a part of. Thank you!

Wishing each and every one of you who stumble across my profile every success in life and in your business here within WA.

Best wishes
Gary

EDIT: It's been a little over 4-months now and still no traction on my site yet. I have also created a second site. You're welcome to check them out and if you have any advice or comments, please feel free to share. I'm coachable, and won't take things personally. To your success. Gary.

Wow, Gary...I finally made it over here to your profile page and I am glad I did! You have such a varied set of experiences and places you have lived in (a GOOD thing)...

BTW, the nifty-fifties is the best age in my mind, so much behind you, yet so much to look forward to...Zambia and Zimbwabe are the names of the countries that make up what was former Rhodesia I think?

I have a close friend here (Dubai) whose family moved from there to Portugal when all the troubles began. She grew up in the EU and also has been global traveler over the years...

As you know by now, this online marketing business takes some time to develop, but also you likely know it works. The latest and possibly best case of this is Ronnie, who has a top 10 post here about making Vegas.

Ronnie accomplished this in 4 1/2 months! That is a record likely, or it should be hehe...Caveat: He has had prior affiliate marketing experience, has had success and likely also has a list that he can tap into...

But it brings home the point that this place teaches proper methods to get your viable business up and running, as Ronnie also states.

Sorry to go on and on, M8, but it sure is nice to have you here, and do not give up! This is the ticket for you with perseverance and time I think...

Cheers!

Hi Dave, really good to have you drop by. Thanks for your lovely long message. You are welcome to go on and on. I love your writing and have heaps (Aussie slang) of respect for what you've accomplished both on and off the internet.

You're right about Zambia and Zimbabwe - they used to be Northern and Southern Rhodesia. It used to be the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Nyasaland gained independence from Britain and became Malawi, Northern Rhodesia was next and it became Zambia and of course, Southern Rhodesia became Rhodesia.

Yes, I get you completely. This game does take time to develop into anything significant but it definitely does work and it very definitely is where we need to be in this day and age. I have been trying to encourage my sister to get herself onto the internet with her scrapbooking business but she always throws her arms up and says she doesn't know where to start nor what to do.

I've been trying to "coach" her into it all by giving her things that she can do without even starting on the internet e.g. filming classes, writing an article or two, writing a bio etc. I said I'd help, but sometimes you can lead a horse to water.....

Very encouraging to read about Ronnie's achievement. There is a bit of a caveat there, but still, it shows what is possible.

I don't intend giving up at all. I absolutely know that this will work but I do need to find me a "permanent" job soon. Just until this all is able to produce a replaceable/sustainable income. After that, it's the end goal - for me to carry on growing this exponentially and for Trish to be able to do whatever she likes.

I've gone on a bit this time :)

Stay well Dave and thanks again for dropping by.

Cheers!

Good afternoon Gary,

Reading your profile I see you have moved over the globe and are now living in Australia with your wife Trish. I have done it the other way around. I was born in Australia but my Dutch parents took me to Europe when I was 3 years old. I have not been back yet but a visit to my birth country is on my wish list. The people who knew me as a baby are not there anymore but I do keep contact with 2 people living there. One is a professor at Sydney University and family of the midwife who helped my Mother. It took me 48 hours to be born so you can imagine. The other is a Dr. at Melbourne University and I have met her twice here in Spain. My parents were friends with her parents.

I always say this to the new people I meet her. Time ago I wrote a post on the Spanish priest and the world library. That is a great place with amazing documents, a good source of information when writing posts.

Thank you for the follow and all the best.
When your website is up and running put it on your profile page below your posts.

Regards, Taetske

It often takes 6 months or more for a new site to gain traction. I'm told ranking is based on good content so keep building your websites.

It definitely takes time for you to monetize a website.

The days when you could get a job and make a career out of it are gone. We are in a gig economy. You get hired to complete a project. When the project is completed you have to look for another gig. The older you get the harder it is to get a gig.

Done right, your website can produce passive income. You can work from anywhere you have an internet connection and you can choose when you want to work. No employees or inventory. Once your site is producing income scale it up to whatever income satisfies you. Noone cares how old you are.

What can be better. You are in the right place to learn what to do.

Hello Gary: Very interesting profile. From Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) to the world! I used to have a Rhodesian ridgeback -he died last year at 12 years old (cancer). We have some affinities in our profiles (welcome to visit). I feel as you do: finally found a great community and tons of useful information.

Hello Eugenio: It is lovely to meet you and thank you so much for following me. Happily following you back.
I love your profile and what you're doing! That is awesome Eugenio.
Ah, Rhodesian Ridgebacks - they are beautiful dogs. My sister has one and my nephew and his wife have two one of which is a puppy (say no more).
I'd love to come visit and if you're ever over this side of the world, you're very welcome here!
Sending you best wishes to your success too

Hi there Gary:
Thanks a lot for following back, of course we (my family) would be highly delighted to welcome you anytime, any length. If possible, bring a Rhodesian (our most favourite breed).
You will love México, I assure you.
Best regards.

Hi Gary, thanks again for your comment on my last blog post. Yes, I know where Rhodesia is! My Mom comes from Rhodesia so she always struggled with Afrikaans here in South Africa. :) I can hear you really want to get this going quickly but trust me when I say, 3 months is still early days. It takes time to build an authority site. Really worth going yearly to save money, takes a bit of the pressure off, and the Black Friday special is around the corner. A way to earn some quick cash and build rich content is by accepting guest posts and sponsored posts for a nominal fee ($5 if you start on Fiverr), I know not much - but it all adds up and can lead to other things. Wishing you all the best.

Hi Lauren, thank you for your message and advice. I'd love it to be quicker but I'm certainly under no illusion that it's quick-sticks in this game. It does take time and patience certainly is a virtue. Realistically speaking, unless you absolutely know your niche, this time is spent learning, finding our feet before we've even thought about which direction we ultimately want to go in - for most.

Thanks again for your message.
All the best!
Gary

PS from one Rhodie to another, please say hi to your Mom :)

Hi Gary. I am now following you and wish you the best success. I am new here as well and I want to encourage you to not give up and don't get discouraged. Just stay persistent and it will happen. One thing I did was redid the training. It is helping me grasp things I missed the first round.

Hi Shane, thanks for the follow and also words of encouragement. I do appreciate it. I don't doubt that it will happen. I guess right now I'd like to be a little quicker but you can't force it at all. It's just got to run its course just as we, of course, run ours :)

I'll start the training again although I've not quite finished 5 yet.

Thanks again Shane.

Hi Gary, thanks for following me. You have an interesting history. My family is Irish and I was able to go visit with my Grandma in 2004. She grew up there so it was great to see her home and meet all the cousins!

We had bees when I was little here in Alaska. I love Alaskan wildflower honey!

Nice to meet you!

Hi Jessica,

Thank you for your message. Where in Ireland was your Grandma. To think, had I known you then I could have met up with you :) I loved Ireland. They’re in the path of a hurricane at the moment. Not sure how strong but I see my friends all “taking cover” in preparation for it.

Thanks again.
Take care

My Grandma grew up in Kilmallock in County Limerick. My Mom has an uncle and other relatives in Killarney, cousins in Bray just outside of Dublin and also in Cork...we have relatives everywhere and got to see all of them. We went to Newgrange which I loved, and also Glendalough, the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle Peninsula, the Rock of Cashel...all over!
Reply

Oh wow, you have seen a lot. Newgrange is absolutely amazing, isn't it! Unbelievable architecture or design and to have completed that over generations is quite mind-blowing.

We lived in Stillorgan, not far from Bray, for a year before moving up to Letterkenny in Co. Donegal. Like you, we got to see a lot of Ireland - it's a beautiful country!

Yes, I am so glad I got to go with my Grandma, aunt and Great Aunt who are all from California now and visit all the relatives there as well.

That is neat you were able to live there! I qualify for dual citizenship with Ireland...I really need to finish all the applications. Unfortunately the price went way up for that.
Reply

That's very special indeed, to have been able to do that trip with them.

You're right. I managed to get Irish citizenship before we left and I think that cost almost €1,000 back then, so I shudder to think what it is now.

:) as they would say over there - "not at all".

I was born and raised in what was then Rhodesia but now Zimbabwe. I lived there until I was 20 and then moved to South Africa as a family (parents and sister). I only lived in Ireland for 9 years.
Reply
Swangirl Premium
Yes, I saw you said you were from Africa and only lived in Ireland a while I wondered if you had Irish ancestry though. How did you get citizenship?
Reply
gcd Premium
No, no ancestry at all - I'm the Irishman in the family now lol My one gran was born in the UK which is about as close as I get to it.

I got it by living there Jessica. I think the requirement is 5 years. You could apply after 4 and the last 12 months need to be continuous. Something like that. We had to have a work permit/authorization renewed annually/every 2 years respectively (Trish was on a work permit which was annual and I was on a work authorization which was every 2 years)

It's a long story, but my wife didn't get hers despite having all the same stamps etc. in her passport as mine and obviously, lived there too. I guess that's just a little Irish though haha
Reply
Swangirl Premium
I can qualify through ancestry. I was just curious how yours worked.

My husband did the Ancestry DNA test last year and it turns out he has quite a bit of Irish that we didn't expect/know about! He thought he was Scottish, Portuguese, American Indian etc. turns out he had no Portuguese or Indian and was also Irish! His Mom is Portuguese but we learned later a child can take after one parent much more so than the other. So, two siblings can have very different amounts of each lineage. He took after his Dad with the Scottish, Irish and Scandinavian.

I have the test and can't wait to see what I am now. I thought I was 1/2 Irish, 1/4 German and the rest a mix of English, French and a bit more Irish. We shall see though!
Reply
gcd Premium
Oh wow. That's amazing. How do you go about it? Do you just go and request an ancestry DNA test? I wonder if it's a universal thing i.e. something you can request anywhere.

Just curious to know - is that enough to be able to apply for citizenship in a particular country if you're able to show that you have sufficient (whatever number that is) lineage?

I'm sure we're all bit of a mix. In fact, I saw a FaceBook thing once where they did that for a group and discovered that they were all a lot more similar than they thought they were.
Reply
Swangirl Premium
Ancestry is a company. They advertise here all the time...they must be American. Anyway, they have a website where you can build your family tree, find old records etc. from immigration, military, death and marriage certs, birth records etc. etc.

They have a DNA kit you can buy where it comes in the mail and you just give a saliva sample that gets mailed back and they process the DNA. It is called "Ancestry DNA". It costs about $100 U.S.

No, the citizenship for Ireland has nothing to do with that. I qualify for that through their citizenship through decent program. Because my grandmother was born there I qualify.

Go to http://Ancestry.com if you want to learn more about the test.

There are others such as http://23andme.com which is similar but costs more and gives useful health information as well.

Good day Gary, what a great post to see on my wall. It's really awesome that my post about keeping the faith inspired you in a way. As you put it, I believe in this working but I know it works as a friend of mine who I have made online just sold his site last month for $235K USD!!! His site was 19 months old and in the first year, the site earned him just shy of $60K, so the site made almost $300 in 2 years!! I know not every site will do this but I know for sure that this stuff works. I also learned two things that were not taught at this school.
There are two ways to design a websites content, the RPM method, and the FAQ method. RPM method sites fetch way more money but take much more work to design and build. The RPM method (Research Paper Method) is built much more like an encyclopedia-style with deep-rooted information and references to research which was my friend's site.
Then you have the FAQ method or Frequently Asked Questions Method which is my sites style and the more common style website where it is built of other peoples or your reader's questions and carries a more personal connection with the readership. My research shows these can also sell for good prices but have to be much older and built out much further.
No matter what I have done in my life, I have always risen to the occasion and went above and beyond what most other people were willing to do. Unfortunately, computers are my kryptonite as well as literature or at least I thought but since being here and learning to write content, I have been told that my verbal diarrhea that translates to digital text, has some very unique and profitable properties to it,....who would've to thunk it lol!
So I have stayed strong, I keep building my site out, I keep writing out relevant content, I keep an eye on my analytics and I help others where I can as I wait for my turn to come in this industry. I have had some Super Affiliates, as well as Kyle, assure me that everything is in place and to just keep doing what I am doing and it will come faster than I will be able to keep up, so to just prepare for when it happens.
Your bio is much like my life, I did not put all that I have lived through but much like you there are enough stories to make a movie or write a book....could be a future niche ?!? I seriously love the beekeeping although one of my greatest fears are those big fluffy bumble bees, not honey bees the really big fluffy ones just scare the living Sugar Honey Ice-Tea out of me, I would push over my own grandmother to get away from them...BLLLUUAHHHH they are gross!!
It's inspirational to see you pushing through and not giving up. It makes me want to push harder and even drive my rank up more here at the WA. I am even going to paste it up here now, by next week I will be in at least the 60's and hopefully have my first organic visitor to my site. I wish the same for you Gary, and if there is anything I can help you with my inbox is always open to you. Happy Affiliating!!

Hi there Jair, it's my turn to say what an awesome and welcoming message it was to find on my profile page. Thank you for taking the time to write. I loved reading it.
I understand what you're saying about the verbal diarrhea comments. I can sometimes struggle, actually pretty much all of the time lol - I struggle to write a one-liner welcome or response to a message or blog etc. I just feel that people deserve more than that if they've taken the time to share something that they feel is valuable enough to share.
Your writing will definitely convert/translate to digital text. You have a fantastic way of writing which will definitely work to your advantage when creating content.
Wow, I hadn't even considered selling my sites. I guess that is why they call them assets because, in essence, that's what they are. We just need to turn them into valuable ones. I also wasn't aware of the different ways to design a website i.e. the RPM vs FAQ methods. That is food for thought.
That's a pretty healthy profit in such a relatively short time. I reckon that people who buy property for investment/profit would be over the moon with that kind of profit after just 18 months or so. Talk about rinse and repeat - why wouldn't you??? Build a website [that's making money already!!!] and then sell it at a huge profit.
Changing the subject, I had a good chuckle at your bee talk. They are amazing creatures and those big fluffy bumblebees do look pretty intimidating. Actually, the ones I don't like and am very wary of, are the wasps. I'm not sure if you get those there. I'm sure you do. The ones with a VERY thin waist and a bulbous rear end with a very prominent pointy bit that does a more than adequate job of inflicting a great deal of pain should it find it's way pointing in your direction. Bees, whatever "flavor" you care to look at, are pretty docile, minding their own business going about collecting pollen ... even those big fluffy ones lol

Well, on that note, thanks for the chat and same offer goes to you Jair - my inbox is always open. I don't promise to have the answers but I will always have a listening ear and will do what I can to help.

All the best - enjoy the rest of your evening,
Gary

Welcome to WA - lots to learn here- stay focused - go through the Certification Courses first - you will get confused or frustrated from time to time - ask lots of questions - people are here to help you.

HERE ARE 3 WA'ers Training Posts - they helped me - one is vocabulary you use here - one is a detailed use of your dashboard to find anything you will need - one is a plug-in to add to WordPress - that will help you build your sties. Hope they help - they did me This one I wrote - deals with how to "close" for the result you want. Stay with it - you don't need a wish of good luck - you need a plea to study the material and stay at it no matter what - it will change your life and hopefully the people you touch with your message.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

All going well today thanks. Yes, I get that the niche thing can be a tough one - very much like product selection when selling on Amazon. Can be difficult but I think just like Amazon, it's important not to get too bogged down with it.

Per my mail to you, we're looking to go down the dog niche, narrowing it down to Toy Poodles and possibly even further to having a therapy dog [that is deaf itself]. Trish, my wife, may run with this one since she is passionate about our Toy and the soon to be acquired second one (4 months old - the deaf one we're planning on using as a therapy dog).

We can incorporate content around Toy Poodles themselves (keeping, grooming, temperament etc.) and then the learning process for us and the dog, in keeping and training a deaf one.

Added to that we're thinking of including [relavent] products from Amazon (and others?). I've also written a few children's books one of which is a puppy book which centered around our current dog that we got as a puppy.

A second niche is along the lines of a site we currently have called "clear my acne now". This was very busy so I am in the process of changing the theme to be simple and less cluttered (it was a turnkey site before - very busy!!). Perhaps this can be developed properly too - I'd run with this.

That will do it for now I think :)

Mike, I've built dogdadolittle but not happy with it - too slow and don't like the color scheme (Trish loves purple which is why I went that way but I know that's not a good website color to have).
I'm not sure about the divi theme either.

I just put your website in quotations and that will usually bring me right to the page where they are indexed, little short cut. If your sites rank low which is usually the case when a site starts out they can be a little difficult to find if you don't have a direct link this will be a little trick you will use to find your first posts if they don't initially rank high, talk soon Mike.

If you are willing to put in an honest effort and take the bull by the horns I will personally help you through the course or with any questions or concerns you may have in your quest to make your online business a reality.

I can be reached through my personal profile at any time when you have any questions...trust me, you will!

Oh! Lesson 3 "Finding A Niche" for many is the most challenging to get through without pulling out your hair and the occasional temper tantrum so I have created some extra material that I feel will be of huge benefit to you while working through this lesson, let me know when you are there and I will give you if you upon request.

Don't forget to create your personal profile by adding an image and a few words about yourself! You will find many WA members come offering their help and asking you to follow them which is a great resource for you to have access too, many members here have a wealth of knowledge that you can tap into.

Just a quick heads up! You can just do the course and that's it or you can take advantage of a discount on a premium membership here at WA. There is absolutely no pressure to change your status, but if you decide to become a Premium member and unlock absolutely everything Wealthy Affiliate has to offer and do so before your 7 day course is over you will qualify for a 50% discount on the first month of your membership.

I look forward to getting to know you and being able to help out when you have questions.

Cheers, Mike
