I am building an extensive resource page on my site. Is there a limit on how many external links to other websites I can have? Are there drawbacks to having too many? Thanks. -
Thanks Andy, I actually retained that info from the seminar, must still be a bit of space in my overloaded brain for information!
You should have about the same number of links coming in as you do going out. Off balance either way by more than about 10% and it is google penal code area. The links should be to highly rated by google websites, blogs. The higher the rating the better value of the link. Much better if the site you link to is in the same area of a field you are in - a mowing service to a tree service and not a tire shop, unless it is a lawnmower tire shop!
Hope this helps. Just attended a seminar where this was covered, if you have more questions I will dig out my notes for ya!
I don't know about that either. But, I have seen cases on my Google+ account of websites being penalized or closed because of too many unnatural links. I guess there needs to be more research with Google.
It seems to me that there is some kind of grey area there, so your question is definitely worth being asked. I look forward to the answer too.
Hi Phil, and thanks for your reply. I also look forward to the answer. I don't like cumbersome surprises. Thanks again. - Al Hurley
This is a good question and one I do not know the answer to. I look forward to seeing some more experienced veterans here weight in on this.

Coming back to Tryalinn's answer, does this mean that each time you create an affiliate link you have to ask / look for another one back to your site? I do not doubt this might be true but it seems really awkward to me. How can you do that, practically? Or is it that an affiliate link is by itself a backlink to? Help! I do not want Google to eat up my newborn website...
I'm not saying that I know the "correct" answer, but personally I wouldn't worry about this one for one link. If you are really worried about it you can nofollow your affiliate links. Especially if trying to maintain a 1:1 ratio of incoming vs outbound links is hindering your content creation process.
