7 Reasons Why Wealthy Affiliate Online Business Training is NOT for Everyone
Wealthy Affiliate is one of the best online business training programs in the world - but it's not for everybody. In this post I am going to tell you about my experience with this online business training system and why I think some people should not even bother to sign up. At least not right now.
There I said it. This idea of starting an online business should remain as an idea for some people. I'm not bashing anyone. The purpose of this post is to encourage you to find a program that is the right fit for you. Or at least change your mindset so that a great one like WA will work for you and help you to achieve the freedom that you seek.
Wealthy Affiliate online business training program is right for you if you are looking for:
- a legitimate way to make money online
- a community of like-minded entrepreneurs who are serious about building an online business
- a secure place to host your business websites or blogs (premium quality hosting)
- a step-by-step online business training program that works
That being said, this online business system may not be right for you if some of the following things are true about you.
1. You are Afraid of Hard Work
When you think about starting an online business or working from home, you probably imagine yourself sleeping until 10am, and then spending the rest of the day checking emails on your phone and checking your bank account online and that's it.
That may be the reality of a few people but those same people will tell you that it took them years of working 16 hours per day to be able to do that. Fortunately with Wealthy Affiliate you will not need to work 16 hours per day but you will need to work.
Building an online business is not the same as being a lumberjack, but you will be doing a lot of heavy lifting mentally. And if you have no desire to exercise your brain muscles to get things done then my friend you are in the wrong place. As a matter of fact you probably should try to find a job, testing pillows for sleep quality. No offense to the people who actually do that.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about the occassional analysis paralysis that we all face when we are unsure about something. Or the burnout that I was experiencing just before I joined WA. What I am talkng about is laziness.
If you just don't want to work then you just should not become a member, because nobody will do the work for you. And even if you can pay someone to do the work for you you will still have to do some things yourself to run your online business.
2. You Expect to Start Making Money Immediately
I had a hard time thinking about whether I should put this in the list, I wasn't sure how it would sound. I understand the struggle. So please understand that I don't mean to offend you in any way if this is your situation.
But if people depend on you for food and rent and you don't have an income then you need to go out and get a nine to five job at least for a few months. Go to an employment agency and write down your name. Have a yard sale, babysit for a friend or do something with your hands.
Meanwhile, sign up as a free member at WA and follow level 1 of the training, but don't go premium hoping that you will magically earn some money to cover your bills in the next few weeks.
Everything takes time here. It takes time to go through the training, to write posts, to apply for affiliate programs, to get ranked. It takes time. What you are building this year will benefit you next year if you stick with it. But don't expect results within a few weeks. Not gonna happen.
3. Wealthy Affiliate is not for you if you are looking for a get rich quick scheme.
You will have to work at your online business for years to come even long after it starts working for you. Sure you can cash out, by selling it after it has gained value but it will not be quick. There is no system to game here. You will be building a real online business that will become an asset in the long run.
At first you may find yourself exchanging time for money, and at times there will be time but no money, but in the end it will work if you follow the training and apply yourself.
4. You don't have time or money to invest in an online business
You will need one or the other or both. You will need time to train yourself how to build an online business and time to actually build your business. Or you will need money to pay someone to build your business for you.
I signed up for Wealthy Affiliate because I saw the value of the training but I quickly realized that if I was going to let it work for me then I needed to set aside time for my business.
I make a living building websites for other people but I didn't want my income to be always dependent on getting clients. I want my own online business and so to get it, I realized that I needed to make time for my business.
Before you sign up, you need to sit down and evaluate the amount of time you can realistically devout to building your business.
It can work even if you can only work on it for just a few hours a week but it will take much longer to see results.
5. You think you know everything about building an online business
I hope I'm not stepping on anybody's corn by saying this, but if you are unteachable and are unable to follow step-by-step instructions then you may not see any results with WA. The point is if you think you know everything about something you will not ask the right questions to get the right kind of help, nor will you admit when you are stuck.
I came to WA as a web developer with many years working with WordPress, PHP, HTML, CSS, cPanel etc. I had my own domain names with my favorite registrar (I still do) But that knowledge could have crippled me when I decided to move one of my websites over to WA.
Here I was, a seasoned WordPress expert, stuck, and had to ask for help. I did. Site Support immediately responded and took over the situation and updated me when the transfer was completed.
So if you took some kind of online business course some years ago or maybe you are coming from another program and you think you know it all, take my advice. Reset your brain and become humble and teachable again before you sign up.
Here is a copy of a live chat with site support when I needed help to transfer a WordPress website into Wealthy Affiliate hosting.
6. You have shiny object syndrome
If you can't settle down to build a business with Wealthy Affiliate then you are going to be disappointed. If you are the type of person who likes to jump from one business idea to the next. And you see every new program or opportunity as the perfect system for you only to abandon it after a few attempts at maknig it work, then you may need to pick another program.
You gotta be in it for the long haul and you have to commit.
Recognize that there is no perfect online business system and commit to one that works.
7. You don't want to help people to solve their problems
There is a saying in business that," if you want to make a million, then you have to help a million".
That's true in any business, more so an online business. Successful businesses solve a problem, but you also need to be willing to solve problems that you don't think you will benefit from financially.
That's called networking and WA online business training has networking built in. So learn how to help others and accept help from others before you sign up for Wealthy Affiliate's online business training program.
So what are you waiting for?

Hi Rey - I enjoyed your post. :)
These points are all so totally true.
I've been a victim of Shiny Object Syndrome and I've been tempted to skip sections of the training because I thought I knew better (I'm also a web-developer but thankfully I stuck to the training path and completed each action point so far).
I think that as I've stuck with WA, I've matured as an entrepreneur and started to recognise where I'm going wrong and that's partly because of the training but largely because of the inspiring stories shared by the community here.
Best wishes for your continued journey this year!
Great post Rey! It will help a lot of people if they take your advice. Thanks for sharing!
Gail
Awesome post, Rey!
I've had similar conversations with friends who are 'interested' in MMO but they have all (so far) balked at the challenge perferring to do a 9-5. Go figure.
But, yes, it's absolutely not for everyone. Our education system essenetially trains us for J.O.B.s not to be entrepreneurs so those who DO take it up have broken years of brain-washing :-) and show an independent spirit and self-motivation which is absolutely essential.
You'll do well :-)
Ian
Yes, I agree. That’s what the education system has trained us to be a worker rather than an entrepreneur :o)
Exactly. Difficult though it may be for us here to believe, some people are actually happy being workers. Jobs have much to offer. Just not financial or time freedom :-)
Ian
Hi Rey, I love this post!! Brilliantly said. You are absolutely spot-on. I am amazed at how much insight you have gained about Wealthy Affiliate in such a short period of time.
Excellent advice to recommend having another source of income as you build your online empire.
I've been working on my numbers and will be posting my income report in the next couple of days, so you'll see how I went from making a loss in year 1 to making a profit in year 2 & 3. And just how damaging shiny object syndrome can be.
In the meantime, I see Grace, aka LittleMama has already posted her income report for the year and her "Income by Calendar Years" graph really proves your point.
In case you missed it, here you go: 2018 Year In Review: $40K Thank You WA! Happy New Year! Wishing you every success for the New Year. I'm excited to watch your progress.
Hi Lauren, I saw it littlemama’s post, very inspiring. I’m still trying to balance everything. Just got a new local client today, so I’ll be busy for the next month or so.
I have a schedule to work on my online business but it’s hard trying to juggle client’s projects along with my own.
I am grateful that I have an income source while my website is still growing.
Hope this year works out well for you.
Rey.
Hi Rey
I totally understand that juggling act, balancing time spent bringing in an income with the time required to grow your new online business into an income-generator.
As Melina Lewis, an Indie Author I interviewed recently said: "The juggle is real". Hehe.
Wishing you a fabulous year too. I'm sure it'll all start coming together sooner than you think.
This should be required reading for all newbies. Thanks for posting. I have copied and pasted the Spam is a NO NO at least 50 times in the last week. Saw someone today who signed up and wanted to know when he was going to make some money. He said he was half-way thru the first lesson. ARRRGGGHHH!
Great Post!!!!!!!!!!
Make a living, Make a difference.
