I am 58 years young and retired from the corporate rat race 14 years ago. Everyone said I was crazy to retire so early. I said you are crazy for working at a job you hate till you are 70.

I was born in Frayser, Tennessee and am now an American ex-pat living in Kyiv, Ukraine.

I left 500k in salary on the table over the past decade and have no regrets. Money replenishes, itself, Time does not.

I am a Certified Personal Trainer/ Fitness Nutritionist/ Specialist in Exercise Therapy and also Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL-Scotland) abroad. I travel the planet looking for discovery, adventure, and knowledge. I bought a condo last summer in Kyiv, Ukraine to be with the most amazing woman I have ever met in my life. I spend my time equally there and on the road.

I am an avid golfer, competition chef, reader, music-loving, open water certified rescue scuba diver and will do anything tor an adrenaline rush.

I live by a strict Hierarchy of Values. I do not waiver from their adherence.

1) Health- I love helping people reach their health goals.
2) Wealth- Everyone has some type of wealth.
3) Faith- No explanation needed. Play hard, pray hard, all day, every day.
4) Purpose- I get joy/happiness from helping others. My happiness is not
determined by how happy I am, but how happy those are around me.
The cornerstone of achieving success is helping others(who appreciate it).
5) Absolute Freedom- This could be number 1 easily). The state in which
absolutely nothing can restrain me from doing ANYTHING, ANYTIME,
ANYWHERE my heart desires, neither myself nor any external forces,
6) Belonging- A sense of Community/ Social Relationships (WA filled a void)
7) Knowledge- The daily pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, adventure, and discovery, by traveling, reading, soaking in all of life's experiences and the wonderful things God has put on this planet.
8) Footloose- Life as most people live it leaves me empty and unsatisfied. I need a richer, more intense and challenging lifestyle.
9) Respect- All any man needs is respect. All any woman wants is to be loved.
10) Happiness- "Happiness is only real when shared"..Christopher McCandless

I challenge everyone to WRITE DOWN your Hierarchy of Values.

For most of you, FAMILY would top this list. I have none. My mom was born in 1921, Dad in 1905. I have so siblings and only a few first cousins living. Not enough to keep me in the USA. I found the love of my life in Ukraine and the country is amazing. The cost of living there is 75% cheaper than in the USA. They say you can never go home. They also say home is where the heart is. My heart is in Ukraine, so I AM GOING HOME.

Unlimited possibilities exist for me. I worked my ass off to get where I am
today and now I have Absolute Freedom. It will never be taken away from
me.

I LOVE THIS COMMUNITY AT WA, AND FULLY INTEND TO TEACH WA TO UKRAINIANS. The average salary there is $145/mth. I can really make a difference in the lives of so many there.

MAKE A LIVING, MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Hi ExpatM, thanks for following me. If your father was working for employer and get promoted, and your mom. You will definitely follow their trail. But if your parents were business people you'll do the same

When we grew up, we learned to work for big companies/business, like our parents, never skilled to work for ourself. I'm not saying we were wrong. They're our anchors/role models after all.
If you were earning 500K, how much profit did your boss took away, how many employees did you train using your knowledge skill and experience Just imagine if that 500K was your company profit. In 10 years that would multiply to 5 million or more profit. Good Luck

I agree. That is why I left the corporate BS twelve years ago at age 46 and have signed my own checks ever since. Yeah, when I grew up I was a 10 minute drive to Dupont, General Motors, Humko, Kimberly Clark, Firestone, Plough, and at least a half dozen other Fortune 500 companies.
You just went to work for whoever paid you the most. We sure did not have anything like WA back then.
And we all know what Uncle Sam does to us workers.

Great profile Mark! Very inspirational. I think many of us feel similar deep inside and have a difficult time reaching for it because we are too comfortable or just complacent. I admire you for living in complete freedom from the chaotic ways of life we fall into. The love of your life is a lucky woman and it sounds like you are just as lucky to have her. I wish you both the best in life and sure you will be successful here on WA.

Mark, you are an inspiration. Thanks for the follow. I needed to read this bio today to know that it truly can happen. At 49 here, I think about it everyday, how I can get out of the rat race and retire somewhere in a different country soon. I research it daily. My son at 23 is on the same page and off to teach English in Asia. I will never retire living in Vancouver, Canada. The cost of living is ridiculous. This is the main reason... My big WHY I'm on WA. Trying to build something so I can have my freedom back. You are a smart man!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the follow!!

I’m currently on a similar journey of my own. Recently left my 9-5 office job in accounting to live life on my own terms and be a present mom to my 3 children.

It’s been a hell of a journey so far - many ups and downs along the way. An adjustment for sure. But I never want to have to work on someone else’s time EVER AGAIN.

Life is way too short and time is something you can never get back.

Wishing you all the very best!!

Hey Mark!

Thanks for the follow. It's really nice to meet you. I liked your bio a lot. It made me think of two things:

Know thyself. You clearly seem to know yourself and what you want out of life, and that's wonderful!

The second one is less profound. Having as many kids as I do, we've been on a Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" kick. So, the last part of your bio where you mention the average income and your desire to fix it made this quote, in the attached picture, come to mind.

Hi Mark, I've been planning to retire from corporate world since I was 40 years old, my goal was to be working in our little Real estate business and focus our efforts on growing it, but debt always stopped me from making the move.

I read your bio and I now realized how much time I have lost making other people rich, I'm 52 now. Oh well, since we can't go back in time but I'm convinced that I have the power and the will to change my future.

The plan from now on is to focus on learning and fishing my WA training lessons and work hard on my next Goal, become Financially Free!
I know I can't do it alone and that I need help, I'm confident and I know I can consult our very knowledgeable WA community when I get stuck on something.

Thanks for your inspiring blog and thanks for the follow. I appreciate it.
Definitely following you back.

Cheers!

You are accomplishing a lot in your life and you are tasting the fruits of all your hard work over the years, that is really impressive. For a person to walk away from $500,000 says a lot about a person an I agree money is not everything.

I live in Canada I have never traveled outside of Canada and the farthest I have ever been to is Ontario. Fascinating. I didn’t happen to meet you at Taco Bell a couple of weeks ago did I? I was out running errands otherwise I would have never been there, but I met the most interesting man who was a personal trainer and planned to move to the Ukraine to be with his girlfriend. He gave me his email address and told me about Wealthy Affiliate. I lost the little slip of paper somehow and was very discouraged about that, but I wracked my brain to try to remember what he had written down and came up with the words Wealthy Affiliate which I then googled. Here's the Hierarchy of my values :

Being an example :

1- Health... I do love being in a healthy body, knowing some basic information on the bio mechanic help me to understand myself better and it easier to guide other's
2- Love... It is important for me to give love to myself in the hard time of life. Sometime I doubt of my capabilities and giving love to someone who really need it, fill my heart and give me the strength to continue
3- Family... I live at 5 000 km away from my family. Sometime it's hard to not being with them physically and it is a major reason why they are as important for me. I realize that when we have something in abundance, I have a reflex to forget how lucky I am to have them in my life.
4- Sharing... If I have just 1$ in my pocket, I want to give it to someone who need it. But the most important, it's the time I share with people.
5- Being grateful... I think that value say everything by itself
6- Growing as a human... Life bring experience, we all have the choice to take those experience in the way we decide to see them

All the Best,
Mathieu

I challenge everyone to write them down. They give you a perspective of where you are and where you are going. My parents were born in 1905 and 1921, so only family I have are a few first cousins scattered here and there. Had to go 5000 miles to meet someone with whom I mean to start a family, so that is why family is not quite on my list. Love your list my friend, very admirable.

Thank you for following. You've come right on time. I am leaving my job in a couple of weeks which is not that a corporate miracle but I currently live in Greece which is supposedly just recovering from crisis and this job is pretty high paying. I can always go back but it would kill me. I cannot say I have something going in the blogging world but I need time to work on my new creations. I am fairly new to WA which has given me that push that was missing. I was born in Greece and went to the US when I was 8, came back when I was 15, went to the US again when I was 19 and came back again when I was 21. After opening various businesses which went pretty good, I started to travel to India, Nepal, Thailand, etc. and at some point found myself in Mexico where I formed a family and spent 16 years of my life. I came back to Greece three and a half years ago because of the violence issue Mexico has been facing in the last decade. My daughter was going to enter her teenage years and I did not want her to live in that kind of situation. I am now 56 also and am thinking of going to Madrid to live for a few years. I will have to go back to Mexico within a year and a half and probably have to stay there for a few months in order to not lose my citizenship. I speak fluent English, Spanish and of course, Greek.

And that pretty much sums me up. I am glad to have met you. In a way, you give me inspiration. I hope everything keeps working right for you in your amazing life. You are an example to be followed. Stay well!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the follow, following you back. Amazing life story and even more amazing Hierarchy of Values. Congratulations on finding your place and purpose in life. Sometimes it takes traveling around the world to find it, I found mine in the Philippines with the woman that I married and have remained happily with for over 44 years. Best wishes for your continued success.

Hi Mark - You are obviously a man on a mission; to live your life. I agree that men seek respect, it is perhaps our primary need. It starts when you learn to respect yourself and follow your own path. This leads us to being grateful and respectful of others.

You are now a positive influence on me and others I'm sure.

Thank You - Mike

Thank you Mike for your kind words. I think my parents did a pretty good job. Dad was 56 and Mom 38 when I became a Gomer Pyle baby. Surprise, surprise, surprise! I had 2 twenty year old sisters and when I popped out in feb of 1961 it surprised everyone. Dad just said" make straight A's and do what you want". I did and I learned at an early age I always wanted absolute freedom. Give me that and a purpose(helping others), and I am quite content. Now if I can just conquer this MMO thing. lol. Have a great weekend!

Hi Mark, I will be following you. You have an amazing bio. A real renaissance man. You already have a lifestyle people have dreamed of. So many amazing people and diverse population in the WA community. My mother was born in 1922. She was a real classy person and miss her. My father no longer with me either. Both my parents were unique.

Hmm, I never thought of living in Ukraine as a cheaper place to live. I have to check it out...at least to visit. Blessings to you.

Hello Mark ... thank you for the follow. You have such an honest and refreshing outlook on life, and seem undeterred once you set your mind on the direction you want to go. These attributes will serve you well here at WA.

Does your Ukrainian lady friend speak English and/or are you learning to speak Russian?

I wish you the best on your WA journey and your journey of life.
Reply
ExpatMark Premium
Thanks Dennis. She speaks better English than most Americans. And Ukrainian(Cyrillic alphabet) easier to learn than English. Most of the letters are latin like engish and they all have just one sound. The young people here all have at least 4 years of college and many years of learning English. The problem here is the government is so corrupt and the average salary only about $150 usd. The "shadow economy" is embedded from the communist days and will take better leaders to solve the problem. The people are salt of the earth and living here reminds me of growing up in the late 60's-early seventies in america. I am 2.5-3 hours from all the European capitals and so much history to see. With Russia attacking ship yesterday in the Black Sea, martial law is now in force Afraid it is going to get worse before it gets better. The West doesn't want to get involved. Sad.

I hope things are safe for you and she. Your description of the young Ukrainians seems very positive for the future. Oops ... we're getting very close to a topic of discussion that is on the No No list.

Mark, It is one thing to learn to speak a language, but another to learn the rules of grammar. I have learned both, and find Russian/Ukrainian grammatical rules to be very difficult. Just like English, Russian spelling can be difficult and Russian letters can be pronounced differently under certain circumstances.

The hardest part of learning English is the spelling of words, and it drives me crazy. Good Night

If I did not know English, I would say it has to be hard to learn. Seems like there are more exceptions than rules. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet is easy and all the letters have just one sound(unlike English). My girlfriend always wants to improve her English. I tell her she speaks better than most American, and the way she butchers some expressions is priceless. Spanish was easy to learn and just as easy to forget. Guess like anything if you don't use it , you lose it.

Haven't made a cent at WA, but looking forward to using what I have learned here to switch from one-on-one training to online (can reach way more clients). Made my moving money selling my house, business(Property Maintenance-had 51 residential/commercial properties I maintained by myself), lump sum payment from 25 years at Scripps Howard and not having any kids. Plus Personal Training nets me $75/ hour. Put money into my IRA's for over 25 years. Compound interest is a great thing.

Mark, you are very wise. If I had to do it all over again, I would have chosen a Roth IRA. No tax benefits on your current income, but you pay no tax on what you take out when you retire. After reading your comment again, I'm not sure that you haven't invested in a Roth IRA.

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the follow...you have an impressive life resume. I really like your statement, "Money replenishes, itself, Time does not." This could not be more spot on. I too retired early ( age 46 ) from a law enforcement career. I've had a few very boring full-time jobs since then. I am very intrigued by anything online and I think this platform has great potential for retired folks. It will take hard work and effort to obtain income but I'm always up for a good challenge.

Good luck!

I would think there are people in nursing homes who are just there because they don't have someone to care for them. They probably still have all their wits and could enjoy WA, perhaps even do it as a group. For $49/mth they would have plenty of sites for everyone. Your thoughts?
Reply
Calh60 Premium
Great idea, my dad, who is deceased now started tinkering with computers in his later years. I really think the interaction kept his mind sharp and his thoughts progressing forward. The same thing could be said for folks in nursing homes.

While I go through the boot camp training I want to focus on the retired community with a concentration to retired veterans and law enforcement. I think it is the kind of thing that may allow for scaling as well. Just think if even 10 people signed up in a nursing home. That would be a large number of possible sites.

Lets keep in touch with this niche idea and brainstorm. The older generation would have so much of life experiences to draw niches from. Moneonline.com am sure is taken but how bout moneyfromnursinghomedotcom. why not?

Hi MT. Thank you for adding me to your team. Talking about salaries, here in South Africa the average salary is $70 per month among the poor which forms almost 60% of the population. Where a whopping 27% of them are unemployed. And just thinking of the woman and her daughter next door to me... they do not even know how to switch a computer on! I hope your task in the Ukraine would be easier. All the best and take care.
Regards
Charmaine

I never really thought about how poor South Africa really is. Ukraine's problems are leftovers from being part of Russia for so long. Almost all employees are paid "under the table" so employers do not have to pay taxes. This "Shadow Economy" makes it difficult for a gov't to get anything done. The young people are the most highly educated in the world. All speak 3 languages, have a 4+ years at a university, 18 months military training. The literacy rate is highest in the world at 99.8 % They just don't have enough jobs though they have become like the 5th largest IT job market in the world, behind only china, Russia, india and America. WA would be perfect for the younger generation. The people are salt of the earth, so hospitable, so family oriented. I love it there.

Life is a journey & we only get one shot at it - so I try to not look back at things I can not change - but look forward & try to make a difference for myself & my family, friends & help where I can.
I am an Aussie in Thailand where the salary is approx $130 a month for most. As A Rotarian, I do what I can to assist children & their education.
