Why am I getting spam on my site even with askismet?

You will always get spam but with Akismet it still gets through. That's why I stopped using it ages ago.
I use Anti spam bee which you can download the plugin from within your website.
Just go to plugins on your left hand side select add new then in the right hand box either type in anti spam bee or if you prefer you can do the same with WP-SpamShield as stated below from Steve.
You will get some other choices but these are the best two just select the one you want click install then follow any instruction that may be there and you are off and running.
Very important:
Don't forget to delete Akismet from your plugin site not just deactivate but also delete.
Since using Anti spam bee any spam that comes along gets rejected straight away and I don't see them at all just get a number of spam that has been rejected which is over a thousand at the moment.
I am more than happy using this many others here use the same as well.
Hope this will help you out.
Take care be well and wishing you the best going forward.

My niche is about healing from emotional abuse. I have a lot to say about this topic, but I want to be careful about not divulging confidential information and/or hurting people
Yeah, if it's sensitive information from a person who didn't consent to being named on your site, then definitely make up a name. You can even say that the names are made up to provide confidentiality.
Thanks Vitaliy. I agree - I would definitely not use people's real names. My main concern was whether or not to use my own. Since some of the things I'll share on this website are from my own personal experience, or those of people I know, it wouldn't be hard to figure out who I'm talking about if you know me. I probably won't use a photo of myself, either. Maybe an illustration that could be more generic, or an image that's not even of a person. Any input on that (photo) side of things?
It's really a matter of preference. I remember I used to write articles on content that I felt uncomfortable sharing my name with (LOL), but in time I figured if the site/niche I was in was close to my heart, why not be proud of it. Now I gladly share my image/name to build more trust with people.
This doesn't mean you have to follow the same path. One thing you can do is start with a pen name and then if you feel comfortable sharing your name in the future, you can always change it up.
Oh my goodness do I have a story to tell also. I'm currently writing a book/story of my life. The names have been changed to protect the 'guilty' LOL. I'm known by my book and online by a different persona. I've had a thing about names ever since I was adopted by my stepfather and changed my name. Pen names are a good idea in my opinion.
Thanks, JT. It's making more and more sense all the time to go with a persona. Thanks for the input.
I've always thought that on my site I should try to be me. But your niche isn't like mine (mine's about hiking) and I can completely see how keeping yourself out of the picture would be a sensible route. I don't think that this would in any way be a problem - often those in similar roles in the media (and out) take on a pen name, and not for their own protection/confidential requirements either. I think I would choose an appropriate name - but can't decide whether to say choose a name which sounds 'right' or one that is obviously made up, so that people will know that you will be dealing with them confidentially. It's a good question. Good luck with your thoughts - but right to sort it out at the start, as you said.

I agree, Jon. For most niches, using your own name is fine. For this one, however, I think I'll be better off using a persona. Thanks for your input!
If it were me, I would use pen names for everyone. Someone may recognize his/her story, but if it's a different name, they may just a kinship with that name. If it's his/her story with his/her name, you stand to hurt feelings and worse. Just my nickel.
