Make sure you have Akismet activated it is a really good tool

Looks like you have gotten great advice from the folks here at WA. Good luck with you website

Like Marion said, DO activate Akismet. It works great for me and spam.

Delete all those comment and activate Akismet. Your website is full of spam. ~Marion

Akismet is activated and stops those comments by
holding in moderation, I guess to see if I mark it as spam or delete. I have done so accordingly. :)

http://www.karengatachurch.org/index.php/k2/k2-listing/item/81-lacinia-sed-convallis is chock full of spam. Do you need help in configuring Akismet?

( this is the message I get from Akismet) but when I click the Akismet configuration it still says I need to log in or create an account and get my api key. I thought it was already set up when we followed the website set up with Kyles training. now it seems there is an additional step to take. ??

Here's Kyle's training on setting up Akismet and getting your API Key: You don't need to pay for Akismet.

Thanks Marion. I will definitely review that. It should answer all my Akismet questions. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I wouldn't try that in chase anyone is thinking about it lol

It is spam delete it.

deleted.

Most spam is generated by bots (automatic computer programs) who go around finding all indexed sites and trying to submit a comment. The goal is to simply get their comment with their links to whatever site or service they are trying to promote to as many sites as possible.

It is not from WA and every website has it which is why there are so many antispan plugins out there. The first comments any of my new sites get are always spam related because they just look for any indexed site and arent a real person who found me in a search engine.

They will sometimes blatantly promote something while other times just say very very generic things about your site. My favorite is when they say they are signing up to my newsletter when I dont have one... Or that they just love my theme and want to know where they can find it. Or WOW did you build this site all by yourself

In other words, they really like to compliment you most the time because it increases the odds you will just publish the post and say Thanks!

Just delete them and move on. As someone below mentioned also make sure to activate your captcha and your askiment if you havent already because it will help block the spam. There are some other popular plugins as well that I know some people use instead of those two such as antispan (i think thats what it is called). Those will help keep the spammy comments out of your way so you don't have to keep going through them and deleting them.

Thanks Autumn56

One comment was so generic, it almost sounded authentic, (I may have just wanted to BELEIVE IT cause it sounded like the kind of compliment you'de like to hear) It still really didn't make any sense, coming out of the blue. I DID delete them and mark as spam...

I Like it when I am expecting responses from the give and take thread here. Those ones will come out as authentic plus we can go straight back to the commenter and offer feedback for their site too.

Thanks for taking time to explain and respond. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the clear explanation Jean, great job!

Other WA members know better than to leave spam comments. I have never seen any true spam comments on any of my sites from people at WA.. a few that aren't particularly useful maybe ("Site looks great - keep up the good work" that kind of thing), but not real spam like what you describe.

Akismet does a great job at filtering. It hasn't let any through to me yet. It has captured a couple of WA members comments as spam by accident, but not the other way round.

The spam comes from bots trying to get backlinks and possibly even traffic by you clicking on the URL they have left. As long as you don't approve the comment or click through, then they will have failed. Be wary of clicking any links left by spam comments, as viruses could be concealed.

It is rare for people in WA to randomly leave a comment on your site, and if they have, they'll usually let you know.. so that is how you can tell. If you have posted in the give and take thread, then comments will follow. It should be easy to tell what has come from WA and what hasn't 99% of the time.

Thanks for the explanation LittleClaire.

I understand now that it is an automated response. My akismet has stopped them, holding for my response. So I really have nothing to worry about.I appreciate your response explaining.

Thanks for taking this time. Have a great day.

Teresa

It is SPAM. Nobody from here sends those. A lot of us get them. Just click SPAM and delete.

thanks upsgirl. I did.

Cool!!!

Whatever their origin or intent. What is consider obvious spam and not related to your article, page or post. Do not approve their comment. Google might punish you for having useless comments.

Do you have Akismet installed?

Yes Eriken, Thanks I do. I realise it must have been misleading when I said I got comments.. but they ARE pending review, since my askismet has held them waiting for me to approved or not. I won't approved them of course.
