Don't friend me on FB and spam me!

Ok before I go on my little rant let me say that I love networking and I love connecting with WA members on social networks... to chat, to share ideas and just to connect. It is awesome!

I have loads of WA friends that I have connected with on Facebook, some I have even had video Skype chats and Google Hangouts with. And yes it has been buckets of fun!

However there has been a growing trend where I am sent a friend request on Facebook (or other social media) and when I accept I get sent private messages with so called business opportunities. A good few of these have been WA members.

How do I feel about this? Ok here comes the rant....

I feel so irritated I want to scream at you. You have broken my trust and you have broken the way WA works, the spirit of WA... everything I love about it.

Firstly most of these opportunities that are inboxed to me are downright scams or some stupid MLM "opportunity"... yes I hate MLM and I won't apologize for how I feel.

Secondly I get BOMBED constantly with spam and BS... please don't add to this.

Thirdly it makes me want to reject all friend requests on Facebook. It will certainly close up this loophole of being spammed.

If a person is sending private messages to people to try and market their opportunity do you think that person is making a full time income online? Or are they trying desperately to make a sale?

If I get inboxed on social media with some opportunity I can promise you that it is not a great opportunity and the person that inboxed me is NOT making money... so if this is how you are trying to market yourself I suggest you stop.

I am making a full time income and I never got there by spamming people. I got there by hard work, by doing things the right way, by following the training provided here at WA.

Spamming people on social media will not work, if anything it will result in your social reach being seriously reduced when people start unfriending and blocking you.

Even if they don't block your reputation will be "desperate spammer" not serious online marketer.

Please don't take this post the wrong way, I am not saying don't friend me on Facebook.

What I am saying is please don't abuse my friendship and trust by spamming me.

Totally Agree Lynne .. Well Said! Cheers, William.

I recently had a facebook account hacked, where somebody claimed to be me, had made, I think it was 200 million fast, and that they (I) , would show people how it's done........

These people seem to smell those who are not so strong technically, I spent the better part of a day trying to evade this bug by changing all account data, I sincerely hope the whole thing is erased and destroyed!

It could put a bad light on WA , and everything I am building up here.......

If you should find any residue of this still floating around, could you pm me?

And it makes it less attractive to learn facebook properly, especially if one is the step-by-step screenshot type of learner.......

Oh I will let you know if I see something like that for sure.

It is awful that things like this happen :(

Great Post

There are so many people who still think they can create a business by sending spam links your not the only one that this happens to

Oh I am sure I am not the only one that has this happening!

SAY IT LOUD, as you do. The Spam thing is really unpleasant. I think, it is one thing to make you notice an event or something new (with no strings attached), or if you push people into buying something - which, as you say, seldom has the result, at least not with me.
I think it is a very fine line between info and spamming (except the REALLY nasty spammy posts and emails)

I don't live much on Facebook, but it seems to be a sort of marketplace where you need to pay to be seen by your friends and where you can advertise your things. This aalready is not my taste at all. I like G+ much better and the connection creation via Hangouts etc.

So thanks for ranting - but I guess, the people you mean, won't read your post.....

LOL yes very likely they won't!

But next time someone spams me I can send them this link.... haha

I totally understand what you are saying, Lynne. To be honest, even though I recently signed back up with FB, I'm ignoring most of what's on there. I've got 489 "friends" really quickly, and I don't care what most of them are up to. Because I'm not naturally into social media it still seems like a bit of a waste of time for me. Yes, I could take the time to build relationships with people on there, but I could also use that same time to post content to my websites, which feels more natural for me.

Unfortunaltely, I wonder if getting spammed is all part of what is likely ot happen if you friend a bunch of people who are trying to make money online? But I also think you are probably justified to rant about this because it's good for people here to be aware of how much this kind of behaviour can piss people off.

The strange thing is, though, a short while back you were singing the praises of Mass Planner, but tools like Mass Planner encourage this kind of behaviour. I get loads of notifications in FB from people inviting me to Like their pages. They probably all come from Mass Planner or a similar automated tool. I ignore all of them.

I think it was a mistake for me to add so many friends I don't even know. I think you have a better approach of only having 66 friends, and presumably these are mostly people you know? I would like to say I should go through and delete loads of them and strip it right back to just people I actually know, but I'm actually tempted just to close my account down. My heart's just not in the whole Facebook thing. I mean, I haven't even added anyone I actually know on there like my real friends and family, precisely because I don't want to get into the whole Facebook thing as a personal way of life.

I like writing content for my website. I like building an email list. Hey, I even quite like making videos (and I think I'm getting better with practice). I even think there might be some potential in other social networks like Pinterest. But Facebook, I just hate it and have done for years, but I know this is just my personal view, and I appreciate many people do like it, so that's fair enough.

I know I could maybe one day pay to outsource social media, but to be honest, once I get to a point where I have money to reinvest, I think PPC is a better option for me.

What do other people think?

Oh yes Marcus I couldn't agree with you more about Mass Planner, it is an incredibly powerful tool. There are loads of features though that I just will never use because in my mind it is spamming and very bad online etiquette.

But for the things I use Mass Planner for it is great... any tool in the wrong hands can be a problem :)

I like social media but like you say you need to learn how to ignore all the stuff you don't want to know about. It is quite a skill.

People think I am all over social media, that I spend my daylight hours lurking around but I don't because I get Mass Planner to send all my content out for me. I use it mostly to just send my own content to my own pages and groups :)

I find social media marketing very helpful but I am starting to dislike actually interacting with people on social networks.

People have no idea about online etiquette and it seems the problem is just getting worse and worse.

Thanks for your thoughtful response Lynne. I appreciate it.

Hi Lynne, I feel the same way but I have actually had it happen to me here in WA. I just ignored the PM and didn't follow them back. Tracy :(

Oh no, that is awful and totally against the rules. This is a spam free platform.

lol. I so hear you Lynne!!

This was my last one...

Random Person: "hello"

Me: "Hey there"

Random Person: "Didn't you heard about the good news yet from international monetary fund (IMF)Company ..."

Me: "Can't say that I have"

**** Now I have to admit that I may have been able to handle this better... But it gets really frustrating some times. Right?****

Random Person: "I got sum of $150,000,00 cash deliver to me from IMF Company.I am serious about this,Did you get yours"

Me: "No offence, but I have been online for a while and you need to be careful with your approach and who you choose to put your name behind. If you would like some honest training to making money online... feel free to check out my website. I am always happy to help those who are willing to go after their dreams with honest methods."

How would you have handled this?

Cheers,

- Marc

I think you have been very nice Marc :) I get very annoyed... LOL

I completely agree Lynne - it drives me mad! I immediately unfriend and block :)

Hi Lynn,

I have had exactly that happen to me, it has made me re-think my approach. I haven't blogged about it because I was trying to ensure that I had my facts right, you have now confirmed for me that I was being spammed, by a WA member.

What I did was send that member a PM asking them to stop. We had a discussion and it was hers/his assertion that she/he didn't realise that this would happen. I have un-friended and un-liked hers/his page (with their knowledge) and she/he apologised.

I have also had a few more spamming activities since then and I am about to take the same course of action, this time I will simply un-friend or un-like without contact.

Thanks for bringing this up, especially as I have little understanding of FB even though I have used it for quite a while.

Steve

Hey Steve

Well it is the same as any other type of spamming, just because someone knows me and has a business doesn't mean I am happy to get spammed.

If every contact I have online sent me a promotional message I would be in big trouble wading through it all.

It is very bad online etiquette in my opinion.

I agree completely just not experienced enough to jump on it straight away in a public sense.

Thanx Lynne and have a good day

Know what you mean Lynne, never had it happen with WA community members but had plenty of spam from people who friend me on FB.
Cheers Kev
