Buying your own domain names can be a big hurdle, in particular when starting out. Everyone wants to make sure their domain is “perfect” and often times it can lead to a lot of wasted time trying to research and find this illusive domain of brilliance.

Because of this I want to give you some tips on finding a domain for your specific niche and hopefully help you speed up the process.

How to Choose Your Domain Name.

A good domain is one that is brandable and memorable. You DO NOT need a keyword within your domain name. Many people are fixated on getting a domain name with a keyword in it when in actuality a brandable domain name is much better.

Your domain should be (a) relevant to the niche you are in (b) brandable/memorable.

Here is an example of different types of domain names:

MakeMoneyWithInternetMarketing.com (keyword rich domain) - OK

KyleKnowsMarketing.com (purely brandable domain) - GOOD

You do want to avoid domains with dashes in it.

Kyle-Knows-Marketing.com (not as good) - BAD

These are just a few examples (I don’t actually own the domains above). The first domain includes a keyword, but it is very long and it is not all that memorable. Sure it might help you a little to rank under “make money with internet marketing”, but that is nominal compared to having a brandable domain name (like the 2nd one).

Remember, it is the content (pages & posts) on your website that are going to lead to rankings. You can target as many keywords as you like as you start to build out content. A single website can literally get ranked under 10,000’s of keyword phrases in Google (if not far more). **If you can find a domain name that has both the “keyword rich” and the “brandable” domain attributes, that is perfectly fine.

What Domain Extension is the Best?

You ideally want to get a .com domain. If it is not available, you can get a .org (2nd best) or a .net, but I will typically look until I find a domain that I like that is a .com.

It can be attracting to buy one of the new top level domains like .rocks or .money, but these domains are highly unproven in terms of search rankings and you might be fighting an uphill battle to get rankings in Google and other search engines.

.com domains rank the best!

Where to search for and buy a domain name?

You can buy your domains directly here at WA, through the SiteDomains platform. The process is simple, fast, and doesn’t have all of the “upsells” that companies like GoDadddy.com/Namecheap.com have. Domain privacy and security are also included with every purchase, along with your email accounts.

We have also taken all of the technical aspects out of purchasing a domain like "DNS setting" updates.

===> Search for your Perfect Domain Using SiteDomains

Don’t Let Choosing a Domain Consume You…

A domain is the start of your website, the seed if you will. Over the course of your career online, you will likely have many different domain names and likely some domain names that you never end up using (if you like to hoard them like me!).

Choose a domain that first of all YOU LIKE. Don’t worry about it being perfect. There are just a few things you need to follow here:

  1. Domain should be brandable (this basically means you like it)
  2. You should choose a .com domain with no “-” in it.
  3. Buy it from a reputable domain registration platform, like SiteDomains
If you want to run a domain name or a few by the community and get some feedback, feel free to post your domains below.

Ok, looking for a domain name for a barbecue (BBQ) website. We already have a name for our buisness - Tandem 23 BBQ and I have a website called Tandem23.com that gives all the information of our business. I'm glad I have that, but now I want to have a domain that I can market "All things BBQ" and put a link to our business on it as well.

Thinking of: allthingsbbq.com or howtobbq

....any other ideas? Please help!!!

I like it, do you think you might expand out to healthy organic supplements to other fitness groups too, I'm 100% organic, love what you are doing here, so much junk in regular bb products

are you aware of iherb, some organic bb supps there with good affiliate commissions

@MozMary Thank you so much for the feedback and recommendations :D Really appreciated your help! Yeah it's a great idea to expand to supplements to target more groups. Sure I will ^^ Iherb? Never heard of it but surely I will check it our. Thanks again for your help :)

...they do organic protein powders and much more, should really suit you, nice commissions too compared to amazon...I find the same supplements target multiple groups, though bb is specialized, some bb's have created these supplements and then the people interested in health also use them...

For all I know you cannot change your domain name when once you have purchased it. I would rather you work on content as rankings are influenced by content quality and quantity.

Hey Brandy,

Your domain name is now registered so if you truly want that changed, you need to register a new domain name.

However, I think you may be confusing the site title and tag line with the domain name. If so, here's a tutorial to show you how to change those: https://youtu.be/vxWsqMllshw

Hope this helps you.

Have you tried the keyword tool or Jaaxy yet? If not, I suggest you do because either one will help you find the "low hanging fruit," or the names with less competition. With less competition, you're more likely to end up on the first page of the search results, and get more visitors.

Hi Billy - I'm not sure what your domain name stands for. It seems to me that maybe it should be - all in one marketing - as opposed to - aal in one marketing -.
I'm just trying understand your niche in respect to your question about the domain being a good fit.

If you purchased the domain from a company other than WA, you will need to point it back to WA and it will work with your website.

On the other hand, if you purchased the domain at WA then it should work fine as is.

I'm hoping you might be able to give me some assistance by providing me with your thoughts on my proposed domain name.

My website will be providing reviews on different types of make-up, such as foundation, concealors etc, so I don't want my domain name to be the same as the site page because I don't want to have twenty different sites with twenty different reviews. I want my domain name to be relevant to all the different reviews that I will post on my website, which will then be listed under category. With this in mind I'm thinking of naming my domain 'the miracle of makeup .com' (sorry had to break it up because it thought I was trying to add a website link).

I would really appreciate your thoughts regarding this. Thanks in advance.

Reply
PansyB Premium
Does the name fit in with your niche? Is the business truly an all in one shop. I am taking it that the "all in one" means that:

Everything is in the one place
The place is grossly loaded to capacity
There are different Departments/shops in the one place
Almost everything you need is in this place
It is certainly a Onestop Shop, you do not have to go any where else to get what you want. A complex of necessities.

If that is what the niche is all about or something to the effect, then go for it. That is if the name is available.
Reply

Yeah, what is your niche. Shopping is not a niche, so I would narrow it down to something more specific as your domain should be very specific to your niche.

domain names in general are rented. to move your hosting, all you have to do is change your DNS to the hosts address.
Reply
Alan Hocking Premium
Hi Sarah

If you buy it you own it for the amount of time you have bought it for (ie 1 year)

Regardless of where you buy the domain you have to renew your registration of the domain each year for as long as you want to own it.

You can host your domain wherever you choose to.

Hope that answers your question

Alan :)

Hi Jamco, I'd think about what search terms you want to rank for and then have your domain be a keyword a prime example would "wealthyaffiliatereview.com" (I imagine that is taken) the benefit of having a keyword as a URL is some people search directly in the URL bar which will bring up your site as a potential option.

Hi ImaDesigner - The best way to do this is either use the WA Keyword Tool or Jaaxy and start plugging in your ideas and doing some searches - Jaaxy is probably going to be faster since it will let you know if the .com is available. Kyle says keywords in the main domain are not too important. It's the brand potential that's more important. growfoodathome.com and many similar are taken. I tried them before. As Google brought abc.xyz domain name, you might consider names in the .XYZ range (rather than .COM).

Only time will tell if a XYZ domain name is better than a COM name.

I got 2 XYZ domain names when I heard Google got one, and my domain registrar has a special deal for XYZ domains at the moment. I spent a whopping $2.48 in the process.

Just another option.

sweetwebearnings but it is too broad. You may want to run it into Yxxay. it will break it down to something more manageable.

Thanks for this clarification Kyle! It helps to consolidate what I've been thrashing around in my thoughts. Maybe the thrashing can now subside! ;-)

Hello everyone I bought a domain called How to quit smoking one shut. I think that should be pretty good what do you think my freinds.

Since my niche will focus on wearable technology, I think I am going with TedKnowsTech.com

Hi, I was wanting to get some feedback on my domain name.
www.bestwealthyaffiliate.com
I already registered the domain name much earlier so it's actually a bit late to ask.
Honestly, I have been feeling uncomfortable with the name I chose.
Previously when I asked at another Discussion, I didn't get any replies but still, I'd like to hear what others think. Thank you.

As you said, you already have the domain name, so just go with it and make it work for you. :)

I had a similar domain and Kyle didn't think is was brandable; too many keywords in it.
