I've been using Mailchimp and Sumome, but have now moved to Awever.

I've figured most things out and have subscribe form, follow up email etc sorted out.

My question

I see you found the answer.

Yes, I can change it at Aweber itself when building the form template. :)

That is good to know thanks.

Found the answer, it was in the advanced settings of the form template, you can set it to show just once.

Kathy, isn't that a pop-up feature rather than a autoresponder function. Pop-ups can be used without a AR, right?
John

In Aweber, you can choose a popup when you design your template for a sign up form. I haven't been able to find anywhere you can enter parameters to only show the pop up once.
If no one here knows I can ask over at Aweber, just thought I'd try here first as a lot of members use it. :)

PM RickBell57, he just set up one in GetResponse, same thing

John

Yes it only pops up once because you do not want to annoy people and make them bail on you.

If a visitor goes back to the home page after viewing another post, it pops up again. Is there a way to stop this?

I think the only way to do that is deactivate it and add the stars are one on the side of your site. Because pop ups seem to annoy people

They annoy me too! But I've been advised that this is the most effective way of getting subscribers and all the big name bloggers have written about it, they all seem to have pop-ups.
I've certainly gained more subscribers since I started using Sumome popup.

As I expand my business I'd like more automation for backing up my laptop data

At the moment, I do it manually to an external hard drive and website articles are saved in

Hi Kathy, I use free dropbox for auto backup. I found the training here at WA. I think Welshy did it.

Thanks Janelle. :)

Hi Kathy,
As my main 9-5 job is IT, i invested in a NAS Drive system. The Synology NAS Drives are very good and easy to setup. I also use Office 365 and One Note to keep track of my many logins, and can access all of this from any computer with an Internet connection. I can also access my NAS drive remotely too from any computer and smart phone / tablet. If you need anymore advice or assistance drop me a line.

Tim.

Thanks Tim, being able to access a drive remotely sounds good, I've travel plans this year. :)

No problem. Here is the website for more details:- https://www.synology.com/en-uk/products/DS115j

Thank you. :)

Hi Kathy,
I use Backblaze for online storage, and Carbon Copy Cloner for full bootable local backups on my Mac.

Thanks Ben, haven't heard of Backblaze, will check it out. :)

Thanks for asking this question Kathy, I am bookmarking it for later.

An important question! I was doing research and then had a lightbulb moment, why not ask my friends here, will get real life advice. :)

Hi Kathy,
I've backed up onto Dropbox and computer C drive then onto external drive in case computer crashes so totally covered.

Thanks Emilie :)

Hi Kathy -

I'm old school. I don't like subscription fees for cloud storage, and I *really* don't like having the contents of my hard drive on a site some hackers take a shining to - so I'm almost entirely a local backup guy. I do backup my websites to my cPanel account and to a SkyDrive account (as well as to my local hard drive), but that's about it.

For local backup of my data disk, I use an external 8TB Western Digital MyBook Live Duo. Sandi (my better half) was a drama teacher, and has over 10,000 video titles stored in the computer! WD is the cheapest, most reliable big disk system I could find. The WD backup software is rubbish though, so I use Windows SyncToy, which lets me do incremental backups - and it's free. The first backup was a dandy though!

I backup the program disk (C drive) to another hard drive, an Iomega 2TB external hard drive, using Casper 8.0 backup software. It lets me make incremental, bootable backups, so if my computer's C drive decides to go belly up, I can boot off that external drive and carry on.

That's all I know - good luck with it!

Dennis

Thanks Dennis, sounds like you have your backups sorted! I'm not keen on cloud storage either to be honest, too many good hackers out there.
I like the idea of a bootable backup so will definitely look into that.
I've always kept backups but when things have gone belly up have always restored everything manually.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. :)

One other thought Kathy -

I guess I'm a bit over the top when it comes to backups - and debated whether to add this last little bit to my previous answer.

My system drive (C drive) is actually a set of 4 hard drives (1TB each), set up as a 2TB RAID array. That way I don't have to rely on the external hard drive immediately - I'm automatically warned if a single drive fails, and can continue working on the other 3 drives in the array.

Same deal with the data drive, which consists of 4 hard drives (2TB each) set up as a 4.5TB RAID array. The remaining capacity in the 8TB WD external drive is used to back up laptops, etc.

I *really* don't like losing data - whether it's simply archived photos or things which are actively in use.

Dennis

I understand, we covered this when I was studying, just never thought to apply it to myself and I've forgotten most of how to set it up!
I don't think you're over the top, I've thousands of precious memories stored on discs, but I need something more robust for business use. Guess I'll need to spend some cash.

You might get a shout for help soon when I come to setting up the RAID array!

I agree and find you suggestions valuable. Only want to add, hard drives fail and bad stuff happens. Many things can happen that destroy local records. Be sure you backup vital records and important photos off site. Even banks can get hacked, but most backup companies use the same security the banks use. Less risk of being hacked than being hit by hurricane, fire or tornado.

Hi Kathy,
You can use Windows backup solution, it is easy step by step configuration.
I normally use 2 or 3 External HDD for rotation and safety.
Keep it in secure place.
Keep Cloud as alternate backup as cannot depend on it due to various reasons,
Mcafee provides a good encrypted backup cloud solution.

Thanks,
Gannet

Thanks Gannet, it seems cloud storage is not a good way to secure your data!

Yes, I don't recommend it as it is stored away from you. and might not get it instantly when you need.
Intermittent internet connection will not make the backup sync work well.
Cost factor is also included.

thanks
Gannet

I use sugarsync. (Cloud storage solution). Really happy with it. You can choose the folders you want to sync and whenever you change a file it automatically syncs!

Thanks Sarah. :)

Just read the comments below about local vs cloud storage and would totally disagree that cloud solutions are not the way to go.

I wrote about exactly this topic on my internet safety website about this recently. (You can find my website link on my profile page if you want to read it - go to my blog on backing up your data)

The security around your data is very high when stored in cloud storage. Unless you are locking your hard drive in a fire-proof, flood-proof safe and making a second copy then it's actually safer to store in cloud storage than to use the local options.

It just feels safer to use local options because we have the perception that it's in our control more. Ultimately, it's also useful to have a local back-up but remember your hard drive, like your computer can break down at any time. You don't want that "time to be when your computer also breaks down!! (This HAS happened to me, by the way!)

The other thing is making sure you update regularly enough - a cloud storage solution can be great as it syncs your data even as you work.
There are loads of options for cloud storage out there - you need to decide what you are comfortable. But my suggestion is whatever you decide, make sure you have more than one back-up.

For me, this means a hard drive as well cloud storage. For you, if you truly don't feel the cloud is the way to go then, it might be two hard drives but then you need to Keep them both up to date on a regular basis!

Hope that helps!

Sarah

For all that I wrote elsewhere in this thread, I don't disagree with what you've written here Sarah.

Yin and yang - each solution has it's own benefits and challenges. RAID arrays and cloud storage both keep your data backed up on an ongoing basis. The downside is that if you're infected by a virus or other malware, so is your backup - immediately :\

On the other hand, "batch" backups remain uncontaminated. If you were inclined, you could do both real time and batch backups off-site, but your storage and bandwidth requirements both go up. You're back to that Yin and Yang thing again.

Certainly keeping backups off site is a great option in the event of a fire or lightening strike (hmmm... note to self, Faraday cage?? ;)

As long as your Internet connection is big enough, you're good to go with cloud backups. If you're on a 56k modem (heaven help you!) or using a satellite connection with upload speeds which are just as slow, cloud storage won't work.

Then there are people like me. No excuse; I'm just a dinosaur!

Dennis

Thanks both of you, lots to think about. I have a very slow rural connection that struggles to stream video sometimes. I could try a free version of cloud storage to see if my connection would cope. I'll also use local backups and have the best of both worlds. :)

Hi Dennis. Thanks for your comments. :) Yes good and bad (in fact, I prefer your words - yin and yang!) to all options. You are right - very slow internet speed would not really work well for cloud storage.

Kathy - Depending on how much you need to backup, you could use some of the free options out there - and put the MOST important stuff on that and then use an external hard drive for everything else.

It's a personal decision and dependent on circumstance as Dennis says!

Good luck with your decisions!

Sarah

Thanks Sarah. :)

Just something that popped into my head. Does Youtube have a feature that cleans up sound or video, or both? I used a cleanup there and it worked pretty well. You would not have to publish it.

Precious finding Kathy

Yes it is and very surreal to listen to. :)

I would take something that precious to a professional who will do it properly. I would be to frightened to do it myself in case I accidently erased it.

Thanks Jo, will look locally. :)

Hi Kathy,
I have done it few years back after finding my old c-cassette containing my brother's band early performances. I found the cassette-player and connected it to a PC's sound-card. My husbend had the appropriate cables to do the job. Then I recorded it with using some free software (cannot remember the name anymore).

The process was similar than described in this link:
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/transfer-audio-cassette-to-computer/
Seems that the site is following WA instructions, so it might be one of our members :-) If so, I hope he/she will see your question.

Great link Sara and I have Audacity software somewhere! Thank you. :)

You are welcome! I hope you also have the cables, this was the part i needed to scratch my head. I hope you get your memories backed up properly!

I have a Maplins close by, they are pretty good in there. If you explain what you need or take the gadget in they'll get the cables. My son is also playing guitar and singing further on so be nice to have that too. :)

apple may have some forums about dictaphones

Thanks, will take a look. :)

I would take it to a place that does media transferring, they may have the older equipment needed to play and record it.

I'll take a look and see if there's anything local, thanks for the suggestion. :)

sorry Kathy I cannot help, but fingers crossed for you as it obviously will have great memories on it for you. I bet one of the experienced old( do not mean in age!!!!) hands will soon help lol

Hi Kathy

What Kyle said in his comments is correct in that these are going to be comments submitted by bots .

However I will give you an explanation to clarify which is I guess what you seek.

The majority of anti-spam plugins actually create extra comments form fields for the "user" to complete.

However these are embedded in the comment forms code and the actual "new" fields are not visibly displayed on the screen.

However Bots do not know this and automatically will enter data into these hidden fields.

Your anti-spam plugin will then know that it must have been a bot that entered the comment and then mark it in some way usually by referring to it as a CSS Hack.

I hope this makes sense

Dave

Perfect, this is what I was looking for, thanks Dave!
