How Does Social Media Help My Website? – Do I Really Need It?
The short and sweet answer to that last question is YES! You absolutely need to engage in Social Media if you want to see your website do better - quicker. You could keep putting it off with getting involved in it, but don't start complaining that you are not getting traffic, or good rankings, or conversions. All three of those are effected by the use or lack of use of Social Media.
HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA HELP MY WEBSITE?
Ever since the roll out of Google Hummingbird, the impact of Social Media on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and website ranking has been HUGE! One of the many things that Google looks at when determining how to continue to rank your website, is how popular it is on Social Media. How can they determine a website's popularity? By the amount of Social Signals, interaction, and comments it has.
Now I am sure you know what a comment is but do you know what I mean when I say Social Signals? Every one of us has, or at least you should have, the Social Share buttons on our websites. Every time someone clicks on one of those buttons they are creating a Social Signal.
A share, tweet, pin, like, or a +1 are all Social Signals. In addition a re-share, a retweet, and a re-pinning are also Social Signals. As you just heard from Betty at Google (if you watched the video), Social Media definitely matters, especially when it comes to marketing. If it didn't matter do you really think companies like Coca-Cola, Hershey, Sony, Apple, and any other big company would be using Social Media to market their products?

Thank you Melanie! Social Media is where people hangout and where they engage. It is only logical to market your content there and this is why Google uses it as a way to judge how popular a website is when considering rankings.
