Akismet: Are We Doing Right?
I remember setting up Akismet for my first website and it had a slider we used to move the donation amount to $0, as per instructions. This has recently changed and they are making it confusing in how you go about setting up a free account now.
Recently, I am getting messages from Akismet that states that my Akismet Personal subscription is not appropriate for its current usage. They ask that I upgrade my supscription to a higher level in order to keep using it.
I guess I'm starting to wonder if we are suppose to be paying for this service from the start, as our websites may begin as personal, but they don't stay that way when we add affiliate links with the idea of promoting products to sale.
If anyone can enlighten me, I would appreciate it! I just want to make sure I am on the up and up here and telling others correctly, as well.

I am using the free Akismet and have not gotten any kind of message about upgrade. I also used it without the key for the first 4 months without problems, and I see no difference from then and now
When I started I remember somebody said he paid for Akismet. Then I learned from Steveo that it was possible to avoid by simply moving the slider and that I did. Now this what you write is worrying.
I wonder if Kathy had to pay for Antispam Bee.
Hi Jovo. I'm sure Kathy and I are not the only ones that have received these messages, so it does have me concerned if I am doing something wrong.
Akismet seems to be deliberately confusing this issue in an attempt to increase revenues. Perhaps they're justified, but I think this is the wrong way to go about it.
I've never even been able to find specific answers to this when looking at the Akismet info. It seems to me that whoever from there happens to look at your site ... and whatever mood they happen to be in ... impacts you and your site and how they react to it. I'm sure someone here at WA has had better luck than me.
It's all very confusing.
But to get it for free ... they have it in the tiniest of print and you really have to look for it.
Hope this helps and God Bless.
Hi Cathy. That is exactly what I found ..... they put it in itty bitty print, so that a lot of people don't even notice that you can get it for free. They are changing, I think.
I've seen a lot of blog posts about this recently. I changed to Antispam Bee when I started having problems, I found it much more effective.
Thanks for sharing this. I have not received any messages from Askimet but perhaps a message to Kyle can clear this up. Thanks Michelle.
been wondering myself about whether our sites are personal or not, but sort of lean towards whether they are earning a certain amount or not...

My best bet is for you to just ignore the messages as they are trying to upsell you. Is Askimet still working for your website?
Tich
Thanks for responding Tich. I would say that it is still working, but I am getting a lot more spam since I started getting their message than I use to get. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.
If it is just an upsell and nothing else, then I am not going to worry about it. I'm just concerned that I am paying nothing for a personal account, and I wonder if this is wrong on my part.
