What is the legal aspect of using established brand names in product descriptions ?
Generally, you can use brand names and model numbers in product descriptions as long as you use them accurately. Use the proper brand name - don't shorten, abbreviate, or generalize a brand or trademarked name within a product description
I don't know specifically about the U.K. You should check directly with the Affiliate or Merchant's terms and conditions. If that does not shed light, you may need to go to the product manufacturer. ~Jude

I do know that companies are very particular about using their brand names. WordPress for example want you to write the name with capital W and P, for example, and the term Wi-Fi is actually a branded trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance and the correct usage of the word is as written and not WiFi or Wifi... So if you are useing branding, regardless where it comes from, use it exactly as the company has.
Like Jude says, don't change anything. That's the safest option.

competition in outdoor clothing niche
I think outdoor clothing is a great idea ... but also a very large niche. Maybe you could narrow it down a little bit; hiking clothes, biking, tennis wear, fishing etc.
I don't see why not, would you focus on just regular outdoor clothing... for winter or summer....for sports or hunting, for swimming...men, women, children or all of the above...:))
Thanks for this Kim, I'm grateful for your response. It's really just an idea that would probably involve most of my year - round outdoor activities. I wouldn't be too interested in anything other than regular outdoor clothing, for adults as well as children. That said, most of the jackets I wear for fishing or walking in the woods are specialised types of clothing, being more rugged and durable than standard clothing items. There are a lot of firms selling such products, though quality as in most things does tend to vary. I'm only interested in affordable items, rather than high - end fashion types of things, that would have little practical value. The clothing would also include things like hiking boots etc.
Sounds like a great idea, try to find best of all three, quality, durability and affordability...may be a bit challenging, but I am sure you have some great sources by the sounds of it.
