About AllynBeekman
Joined July 2014
Upon graduation from college, I married my high school sweetheart. That was 41 years ago. We now have two grown & married children, plus four wonderful grandchildren. We have moved twice so we could be close to them and so they could know us really well.

As a young boy, I loved numbers and statistics. I would invent games just so I could keep statistics. Yes, that is a bit strange, I know. Math turned out to be my passion beginning in 7th grade and I pursued it through my undergraduate degree in college.

My father, the oldest child in his family, and his two brothers had continued to work a business their father had successfully started - a lumber company. Unfortunately, it was not sufficient for three families. As the eldest, my father struggled with a lot of the stress of a business that was not growing. Out of frustration, my father told me never to have my own business.

So, I went to college and became a good employee, first in the computer industry and then in higher education. Well, the university I had been working for decided to kill the program I had been directing the past several years because it was not performing well financially. My job went with it in August (2014). For the first time in 41 years, I found myself unemployed.

Since I had been forewarned of this, I had been searching for another job the past year. As I searched and applied, I kept getting "finalist" interviews and then finishing second. Recently, while searching, I came across WA and decided to try to get started. I have loved it from day one.

After getting started in WA and then having a couple more second-place finishes, I realized how little I really wanted to work yet another job. So, I have entered semi-retirement mode and am now working a part-time job.

Oh, and guess what I got hired (immediately) to do? I am now a part-time math tutor at the local community college math lab!

I know this business can work, so I will keep working it. In the meantime, being part-time allows me to spend time with our grandchildren, who are 8, 6, 4, and 1. We enjoy having the opportunity to be an influence in their lives.

Hi Allyn, you have very interesting story about how you got here, I see you have couple of good websites, but also recommend to start a website focussing on just maths :) I also loved mathematics when I was studying but I am into IT now, and looking for 360 degree shift to start my fulltime online business that can give me time to what I like and love rather than do things that fulfill my needs, Nice to connect with you and looking forward to your blogs
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Thank you, Kunal. When I graduated from college with my math degree, I had already been offered a job in the computer industry. Back then, companies were hiring math majors as system programmers because they wanted the logical mind. Programming in machine language was a bit different than programming in today's higher level languages.

I understand the 360 desire. You are at a good age to pursue this. Even if it took 7 years (just a random number) to replace your income you would still have a long lifetime ahead to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

From all that I've read here in WA, not quitting, no matter what, is one of the keys to success!

Hi Avera. Have you been using the Site Comments feature (found under the SiteRubix tab on the left)? Kyle and Carson had that built to help us with the give and take of comments.

Did you need some help understanding the system?
Reply
Ayugen Premium
I know how it's supposed to work but mostly it doesn't work for me.....Rarely I can place a comment on someone's blog ...although occasionally it works just fine. I also noticed on MY site I have to check a box for each and every blogpost I want comments on, so all I can think is they forgot to do that, and it's not my "fault".
To sum....I know I can respond in one or both (of two ways) but it seems I'm blocked from responding to many people's posts w/o them knowing it.
And I KNOW the "blocking" is not personal cause most people think I have a very nice site and am a nice person (that's really true).
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Just to be sure about your site, go to your dashboard and click on Settings, then Discussion. There are several options in there for comments. Here is what I have set:

Under the first topic, "Default article settings" - make sure the "allow people to post comments on new articles" is checked

Under "Other comment setting" I have two boxes checked - "comment author must fill out name and email" and "enable threaded comments 5 levels deep"

Finally, under "Before a comment appears" I have "comment must be manually approved". This one requires that you approve the comment, which is what you want to do. If you un-check that box then comments would appear without you having any intervention. You could end up with spammy or "bad" comments showing up without knowing it.

Check those options out just to see what might or might not be set on your site. Hopefully, it will eliminate the fact that you have to check a box on each post.
Reply
Ayugen Premium
I never had a problem accepting comments. I can't place comments on other peoples' sites, except occasionally. Don't know why.

Ok. I was reacting to your statement, "I also noticed on MY site I have to check a box for each and every blogpost I want comments on, so all I can think is they forgot to do that, and it's not my 'fault'."

I guess I misinterpreted that statement. Sorry.

I just wanted to say hello and thank you for sharing your story. I hope to one day see 41 years with my husband as that is so precious in this day and age where most choose to see divorce as their easy way out during any struggles. As far as this community... I hope it is going well for you. I also have a passion for numbers, but maybe not to the extent you do. I don't make up reasons to use them. LOL. Unfortunately I do not have the formal education to prove my knowledge or else I would be tutoring part time as well. Instead I am here and hoping to continue to gain knowledge and learn how I can share all of my knowledge with others despite my lack of a degree. I hope to be in touch as I learn more within this community.

Hello Allyn, thanks for the following and since you mention a passion for math, we are on the same boat. I'm fascinated by the subject and presently studying Vedic Mathematics.
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
The great thing about math is that it hasn't changed but new ideas and techniques (including the mental techniques) keep coming along. One of the toughest things I've found when getting into mentoring college students is that different instructors teach different techniques, so I have to learn all the various techniques so as to not confuse the student.

Enjoy the Vedic math.

Hi Allyn, I am sending you my url https://plus.google.com/101747547823839663188 I was just wonderind how I can create my own photo. I am not sure how to do that. I don't want it to an actual picture of myself, maybe something that's animated. I think I need to change the image and put something that has a face on it and I also need to create some post. I don't even know how to create post, maybe you can give me some ideas on how to do that. Thanks!
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Do the picture first, then we can discuss posts. First, find the picture you want and save it on your computer where you can find it. I'll be honest - it's best if it's a picture of your upper body and face. People will trust you more if it's really you rather than some random image.

If you don't want your picture there, however, then find a picture you want and save it.

When ready, click on the existing photo/image that currently shows in your header area (on the page you pointed me to). You'll see the image of a camera and the words "change profile picture."

Click on the camera.

Now you can click on "Select a photo from your computer" and provide the information requested.

When your photo appears, you will see a small "cropping box" centered over the photo. Expand this box by dragging the corners with your mouse. Do this until the box shows the part of the photo that you want as your picture, then click on the box to finish the process. Your picture will be installed.

Let me know when you have done this.

I had to get it fixed. I was wanting to get back with you about creating posts, not really sure how to do it. I need directions on how to do that. Thanks!

There are numerous articles/posts on the internet that explain how to post on Google plus. So, rather than me trying to re-write what is already available, let me share one with you: http://www.martinshervington.com/google-plus-posts-the-ultimate-guide/.

You can find this article, as well as others, by going to www.google.com and typing in "Post on Google Plus" or some similar keyword.

I usually start my post by uploading a related image from my computer (related to my website blog post that I want to mention). Then I write a sentence or two about my blog post, using my keyword in the sentence(s). Finally, I share the link to my post.

It's important to also write about other things, not just promote your website posts. And also, be sure to respond to or "like" other people's posts.

Hi Allyn

Thanks for the follow back. Many years ago I met a man who told me every 6 months he would set about learning something new. I kind of like at to some extent followed that policy.

Now he was not just talking - he was an ACII, owned his own insurance brokerage firm which he runs himself, from learning Silk screen printing opened his own business which no 1 for many years, owned 2 KFC franchises before Pepsico bought him out. Currently owns a Royal Castle franchise and at least 1 Subway franchise.

I kind of was impressed - I like the idea of learning and learning continuously - to live is to grow each and every day.

But like you the key for me is my legacy - (children and grandchildren) - to give them a never say die attitude towards life and living.

Very motivational story. I can relate to your dad's feeling about not being able to grow his business. I hear my boss saying this semi-daily. Trying to handle things like customers, training people, life, etc. The funny part about it is, he told you to never own your own business, but, it's naturally in your blood from him any way lol! One of my favorite books of all time is and was, "the slight edge by jeff olson".

The hardest part, but most important part I think people should really grasp is that If you apply effort daily WITHOUT thinking of or expecting results, then you will realize the reality. Its a snowball effect. all that work you put into it kinda just happens. Kyle and Carson say it best when they say " This is not a race". Committed action is a difficult mindset to hold on to without support or a strong purpose. I joined because this community really has that!! My excitement with WA has spread into my work life and personal life. Everyone has been in a creative mode or been inspired by real enthusiasm. Never thought a place like this would exist, but sincerely thankful there is a group that listens and gets it. don't you hate when you talk and things go right over peoples heads.. like wheeeew...lol
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Thanks Kevin. Yes, WA is a unique place. Rather than feeling the stresses of owning our own traditional type of business, here we get to build it at our own pace and, as you noted, just keep going until it works. It isn't a race.

Hi Allyn, since you are the post king maybe you can help me. I have now done my first post. The media inserts are not quite where I want them eg the sea dragon should be down further and to the right of the paragraph noting dragons. Is this a spacing thing or something else from inner space? If you can check out http://fantasy-sci-fi-vision.com and let me know the answer I will really appreciate it.
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Hi Helen. Yes, getting images where you want them can be a bit tricky. I've learned a bit about HTML code, so I sometimes go into the "text" tab and add a parameter to get the image where I want it.

Assuming you aren't interested in learning HTML code (the code "language" you see on the text tab in the editor), here are a couple ways to try to get the image were you want it.

1) Go into the WP Editor for your post.
2) Click on the sea dragon image and click the "X" to delete it.
3) Put your cursor in front of the word "Unfortunately" that starts your third paragraph.
4) Select "Insert Media" and add the picture to the right side.

If the picture still is not lined up correctly, which it may not be since you don't have enough words to fill up the space to the right of the opening picture, start adding blank lines (using the Enter key) after the word "photos" that ends the second paragraph. As you add lines, the dragon picture should drop down to where you want it.

Now, this will leave a big white space gap between paragraph 2 and paragraph 3. Another thing you could do is add another sentence onto the end of paragraph 2. Then you could eliminate one or two of the blank lines and have less of a gap. You also could put an extra line between paragraphs 1 and 2, just to even out the white space a bit.

See if this works for you. Let me know.

You'll want to find affiliate programs that you can sign up for in your niche area. You'll get deep into the affiliate programs in Course 3. Until you get to that point, don't worry about signing up for things. Just get your website started and build out the pages like you learned in Course 1. Course 2 will dig deeper into content and how to find relevant keywords to help you develop posts for your site.

Keep going through the training lessons and you'll get to affiliate programs when the time is right. If you try to sign up too soon, before you have good content, you won't be accepted into the programs.

Hi Clinton. Last time we connected you were developing a niche website, correct? The link listed on your profile page doesn't work, so I'm not sure where you are with that. Can you provide me with your site URL?

If you want to promote WA as an affiliate, you should go through the Affiliate Bootcamp training. Those lessons are aimed specifically at promoting to make money.

On the other hand, you can also promote WA on your niche site but you need to be careful to not over-promote. It won't fit in with your niche, but it is related in the sense that it is how you got started building your site.

I did this by placing a WA banner on my About Me page. Take a look at it: http://coolbaseballmemorabilia.com/about/.

I'll stop here to make sure this is the type of info you are asking for. I don't want to ramble on if I am not answering your question.

Hi Allyn, I'm sorry what i meant was the the lessons 1-10 where it says getting started here. the one in the green rectangular box. I have not gone thru Affiliate Bootcamp, just the lessons I have gone thru in the get started videos. Would Affiliate Bootcamp be a much easier way to make money or would I be better off going with the other. I also need some help finding a niche that will put me in the top rankings in google. Thanks!

I'm not sure one is easier than the other. Both in marketing WA through the Affiliate Bootcamp program and in building a niche site using the Get Started Here training, I have seen individuals who have started making money quickly. On the other hand, in both cases I have read about people who have struggled to make that first dime.

It really is a question you have to decide on. Pick one and go with it. There is no guaranteed winner when you pick a niche but if you stay within the realm of health, beauty, dieting, keeping fit and eating right, pet-related niches, or new tech products, you can find a niche that should be able to work.

No matter what you choose, you need to follow the appropriate training and take it one step at a time. You won't find instantaneous results (money) from any niche or even the WA affiliate program. You must build your site, writing good content posts again and again. The quicker you can do this, the more chance you'll make some money quicker.

Hey Allyn, I did a search through Jaaxy for keywords for my niche. Is it necessary for me to purchase a domain name for my niche.
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Is this a new website? Your one month post talked about having a site already, so I'm a little confused by your question.

If you are starting a new website focused on a niche, then yes, it is necessary that you purchase a domain name for it. You'll want to buy a domain name that relates to the niche, that is preferably a dot-com or dot-net, and that only costs about $10 per year.

Am I interpreting your question correctly?

Yes. I was just checking to see if that was something I needed to do. I had chosen a niche about weight loss. I am in the process of getting my website created so I can get ranked in google. Thanks!

Hi. I have lost one of my menu pages. Have been to menu and put everything in place, including the lost page, but it still doesn't show up after I saved it.
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Hi Kylie. Are you saying that when you go to Appearance/Menus, your page is showing in the menu structure, yet it doesn't show on your home page?

Are you referring to a page or a category? I ask this because if you have a category listed in the menu structure but have not assigned any posts to that category, it won't show up until there is at least one post in that category.

Could you give my your website url? Also, tell me what your main menu should look like (reading left to right)? It might help me if I can see it visually.

Hi Allyn. I sorted out some of the menu. Now I would like to remove the top curb cravings and replace with the one in the sub menu, because that one has a link at the bottom. Also this is my link, but it should lead to the home page.

Ok, I see the link that you want on the menu page.

I can help with this.

Is your How to Curb Sugar Cravings a sub-page to the Curb Your Cravings page or is it assigned to a category under the Curb page?

If it's a category post, you'll have to do several things, so let me know.

If it's a sub-page, then simply drag the How to Curb Sugar Cravings page up above the current Curb Your Cravings page in the menu structure and then move the other two sub-pages under How to Curb Sugar Cravings. The menu structure should be:

Home
Symptoms
How to Curb Sugar Cravings
Easy Way to Lose Belly Fat Fast
How to Eat and Lose Weight
Curb Your Cravings
About Me
Privacy Policy

Once you have this structure, click the arrow on the Curb Your Cravings page and select Remove at the bottom to get this off your structure.

Now, click Save Menu. Go to your site and check your menu structure. It should be as you want it.

Thanks Allyn. It worked. Any idea how to make my url go to my home page?
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Do this first and let's go from there: go into your menu structure and click the arrow for your Home page. Tell me what the URL is for that page. Now, click on the How to Curb Sugar Cravings page and tell me that URL. I have a feeling that somehow, your primary URL got mixed up, possibly when you went to a static home page.
Reply
kyl3 Premium
I did that. I've forgotten how to set the home page as static.
Reply
kyl3 Premium
I know your busy and thank-you for your help! Just letting you know that I went to set my home page as the static page, but the home page wasn't in the drop down options.
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Did you ever go through a process to set your home page as a static page or am I confusing you with someone else? I just reviewed the feedback I gave you in IM and, at that time, it appears that the How to Curb Sugar Cravings was your home page.

Let's try another thing: when you go to Appearance / Menus on your Dashboard, do you see a drop-down menu next to "select a menu to edit"? If so, tell me what you have as the options in the drop-down.

"Home" is showing up on the menu on your website, so it has to be in a menu somewhere under Appearance / Menus. You may have two menus set up and are pointing to the wrong one, which is why I want you to check.

I've sorted out the menu Allyn. Thanks for your help. How many pages and how much content do I need to get traffic? I'm using keywords etc.
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
I have a home page and 4 other pages besides my About Me and Privacy Policy (see it at http://coolbaseballmemorabilia.com). I started noticing my rankings go up when I got to about 10-11 posts.

As I continue to write more content and coordinate with social media, I am continuing to see ranks moving up and some traffic start to generate. I'm still early in the process, though. I need a lot more traffic, so more content.

Thanks for the follow Allyn, i can see you starting a brand new niche here at WA ......teaching the world how to do maths !. I've always wanted to do Maths but somehow missed out somewhere along the line. I needed it for my pilots flying licence years ago . Did what i needed to and somehow came to grips with it in-so-far as Aviation and its various subjects are concerned..........but thats where my mathematical know how stops ! Its your passion and the world certainly needs to learn how to do maths. Wishing you lots of luck here at WA , take care , Johan.

Thanks for the follow! Following you back.

Love the picture of your grandchildren - they are soooo cute! It's fantastic that you and your wife are invalved in your grandchildrens lives. My son meets my parents at least once a week and has done so since he was born. I think everyone benefits from it. Even if there's only the two of us at home (me and my son) he has a bigger family that he is close to and knows will support him. And my parents, who are retired, have a lot of fun spending time with him.

Wish you success with your business.

I just wanted to say hello and thank you for the service, time and effort you have given to this community at WA. It personally means a great deal to me to have what you offer as a resource while learning how to make a living on line.

"Everybody can be great . . . because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." —Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Allyn, Thanks for your interest in my first inane question! Like you I have a keen interest in the game of maths, have a profession as a civil engineer (in water supply and sewerage - ask me any question about what goes in and what comes out!), have worked as a project manager in the construction industry and have been discarded in the last collapse of the construction industry. So I really want to make good at this and to find such a quick response from someone who is making it work is great.

Thanks Helen. You'll discover that there are a lot of people joining WA who have some similarities to what you and I have in our lives. We work, work, work for so many years and do ok while working but then when we get to the end .... not much. I am excited for the younger people who are starting this business now. Hopefully, they continue.

Obviously, we are both smart people. We obtained our degrees and worked hard for years. There's a lot of new stuff to learn about in this business, so enjoy the learning and keep going through the training. If you get stuck, ask questions. You can also use the search at the top to find a lot of extra info about any topic.

I'll be happy to help you in any way I can. I'm still learning, of course.
