Can I use that image or audio file?
There is a lot of inaudibility about which files you can use freely from the internet. Let's put this simple:
Everything out there is made by someone and is therefor, Copyrighted !
Some websites give you permission to use the provided material for free.
Some ask you to give credits to the maker, but it's still free to use.
Some have watermarks on their images, those are definitely NOT free to use!
Copyright claims are truly high, you can get fines of $500 to $5000, and it's to late to be sorry. Removing the copyright material will not bring you in the clean. And they are right! People are spending a lot of time and money to create something beautiful, and others just copy it for their own gain.
You can not just take every car that you like, because the name of the owner is not mentioned on the car...
What is the safest way?
1. Make your own pictures and music.
2. Read always the terms of services on the website.
3. Do not copy anything.
4. Do not use pictures with a watermark! Not here and not on your website!
Social Media shares
There is a lot of sharing on Social Media, and it's perfectly alright to click the share button. But it's not alright to copy the picture and use it in other content. That is not allowed! Pictures on Social Media are covered by copyright law.
- You do not give up your author rights when you place something on Social Media
- Social media is NOT copyright free material, you can not copy or screenshot images.
You may share & re-pin & embed on Social Media
On this training are quite a few links to free to use images
Files of people who are dead for >70 years
E.g. You can use the audio "Eine Kleine Nacht music" from Mozart freely, provided that it is self-executed.
Free images, photos, cliparts, editors, gifs, graphics
I hope this blog brings you a bit clarity in the forest of copyrighted pictures.

Good article, Loes.
There are exceptions as some things cannot be copyrighted.
Recipes for example. A recipe is a method to make something. Common knowledge things such as calendars, telephone numbers, measurements, etc
Thank you Loes, for the information, this is a subject that will cotinue to be discussed here for a long time to come yet,
We are in a business that needs visual enhancement to keep us creative, so there will always be the uniformed as new members join daily.
All the best

Even though Mozart has been dead for a very long time you can't use someone else's recording of his music. You have to make your own.

Well I don't agree with copyright laws, especially here in the US. Besides, I can't make my own pictures. I love recording my own podcasts though! I usually use stuff from Pixabay when I need images.
There are people sued for using Pixabay, Pixabay doesn't guaranty the images are copyright free, it's said in their terms. And even when you do not agree, you do have to pay when you receive a claim
Actually that isn't always the case. It depends on what the conditions of the claim are. Here sometimes it's just a notice saying you need to take the content down, other times it's actually a lawsuit and/or legal claim. If that's the case you do have the option of not settling and taking the case to court, but you'd better have a good case.
Yeah when it comes to a lawsuit, if you settle the case out of court that means you're going to pay, if you're the defendant. If you're the plaintiff, it usually means you're getting paid.
The sums for misuse are often disproportionately high in regard to simply licensing the image appropriately in the first place, ie. one member at WA has recently received a demand for $5,000 over the use of a copyrighted image.
However, it's also extremely risky going to court, in the UK one case was challenged by the website owner, they lost, and had to pay £2,000 in damages for misusing a single image and over £30,000 for the other side's legal costs!
It's also worth being aware that in the USA, you can be fined up to $150,000 per image if the copyright holder can prove wilful infringement.
If i don't have own pictures for my posts, I either create some nice thumbnails or social media posts using canva.com or use free pictures from pixabay.com
