Just Bought a New Domain with a Strange Extension!

Good Evening All,

I just bought a new domain name for a new site. The niche is highly competitive but has a huge audience.

I spent hours on Jaaxy today looking for great keywords. I found a 4 word keyword phrase with results of 538,665/91,572/296/75. Not bad!

So I went to NameCheap and found out that a domain name using those keywords was not available with standard extensions; like .com, .org, .net and .info; they were ALL for Sale to highest bidder.

They offered me a domain name with my keyword phrase with the extension (never heard of it) ".rocks" for $8. Kind of cool since my last name is Rock! So I grabbed it!

Just wondering what the WA community thinks about such a "domain extension". Mistake or not? Worth the testing for $8 ... I think.

Cheers All,

Joe

I have a feeling we will be finding out how it works... ;)

Yes, Thomas ... thanks. I'll update...

Yes Joe, it looks like you're going to "rock" it out with that extension.
I think it will stand out depending on your niche. I wish you well.

Thanks Ada ... it's an experiment at this point!

Joe, if you listen to the powers that be around here, if the content is good it will show up in the searches even if the domain is a dot.smegeggy

Great point Skip! My experiment will tell...

Well, all I can say is that "Rocks!" :-D I don't really know about the newer extensions. I too just saw the dot rocks extensions today. I was buying a new domain myself. However, dot com, not dot rocks. lol. I wish you great success with it. ~Jeannie

Thanks Jeannie! It's an experiment...

I got my domain from godaddy.com

Yes, they are good. But they also would not have had what I was looking for!

I know they are coming out with new extensions, but that's one I've never heard! I still like a .com, but its uniqueness may just work for you. Good Luck!

Thanks! Worth finding out...

1

That's very interesting. I'm wondering why others are selling their .com, etc. Is it for the money or the niche not panning out? An $8 experiment is worthwhile to test the waters, in my opinion.

2

I believe for the money. Yes, an $8 experiment is worthwhile. The keywords get over 1/2 million searches per month...

1

Good luck with that name extention.
It may work for you.
I personally would not have bought it.
However my last name is not Rock

Thanks Ken!
