You have to communicate with the website support. They are very responsive and supportive.

What is the objective of your blog?
I assume you want to write to draw an audience that may eventually become customers for a product you are selling.
If that is the case "cats" is a better option. You can gear you content solely towards cats and get the attention of cat lovers.
Writing about pets is not going to get you the same type of attention, because it is too broad.
But once again it all depends on the objective of your blog. What are you trying to achieve through the blog?

My insight as a pet owner is that I am more inclined to buy from a site that is specifically devoted to cats and their issues. I run from general "pet" sites because it tells me that they are trying to appeal to everybody, not just cat people.

If I'm looking for something say "best hairball product for cats" I'm going to the site (and buy from the site, or click on their link) that looks like it's run by a crazy cat person, not John Smith who wants to sell pet products to a big audience.

I say there's nothing wrong with starting with a narrow niche, and then if you want to expand, start a new website. Successful affiliate marketers get good at building up one site and then branch out into building other sites.

In a narrow pet niche, and I'll use an example already used in the comments, if you start with "how to care for a Ragdoll cat" you have a lot to work with. You've a variety of products to sell like "best cat brushes for Ragdoll Cats" or "best plush toys for Ragdoll Cats" or you can even have a general category like "Ten best cat trees for your indoor cat."

If memory serves from the training, it's better to go narrow because even within a narrow niche there are probably dozens if not hundreds of products to work with. When you get tired of talking about cats, you can move on to lizards, or hamsters, or parrots or...you get the idea.

The pet industry is billions of dollars. And with the retail crisis in full swing from the pandemic, pet owners are buying most of their stuff online. Good luck! 😀

I have a project like that down the line, and I kinda thought how would I plan ahead. Am going for Pets vs One specific pet, because I think down the line, I don't want reach a standpoint. Since I would also be doing apparel the designs would include cats, dog, birds etc.

I always always think one day I may sell my site, so I figure it could potentially be a one stop for many, the added value, would absolutely fetch a higher price.

However, others may argue it may be broad, bottom line run more research and find your sweet spot. Wish you success in all your endeavors.

Well, I don't think "pets" is anything like a niche. it's a broad category. The word niche should be applied to much smaller, specific topics.

I have a site I've had for over 10 years, on simple green living, and you can see its url if you go to my profile and look at my sites in the right hand sidebar. It would be worth a look to see the challenges a really broad topic site can give you. Gee, any ONE of my categories on that site would work as a niche itself. I've struggled off and on with that.

So my vote would be for a small specific topic.

As for passion, I find that it is less important to me than it seems to be to many of the people who replied here. I DO have a passion for writing clear, helpful text and so that matters to me, but I don't have to care massively about the topic of any given blog post.

If you start with "pets" it allows you to expand on different types and you can even include warnings for different breeds on what is best for families, single people and so forth as well as high and low maintenance pets.

I know a lot of people who would love a sort of "one stop shop" to find information on which animals and breeds are best for different living situations and a site like that would be extremely helpful. This also allows you to continually update and add new content.

So, off I went to register yet a brand NEW domain in which I used the backup of one of my registered domains, to populate the new domain.
