Yoast SEO vs. All In One SEO

Here is the third installment of a, "Just Curious" series not only to bring all of our expertise together but to learn from each other and to develop an archive for future WA members just coming on board.

With this premise in mind, I am just curious about the following questions concerning the difference between the "All in One SEO" plugin and the "Yoast SEO" plugin.

1. What plugin do you use and why?

2. Have you used both? If so which one do you like better? Why?

3. Could you share any tips or tricks about the use of either plugin?

4. Have you discovered any special training about the use of either plugin?

Maybe your input onto this blog will uncover things about these plugins for all of us to learn from. Thank you for your participation.

Dave.

Dave, see answers below.

1) I use the All in One. I prefer to rely on my training and knowledge of SEO best practices, which slightly changes every year, and not rely on a plugin to tell me what I already know how to do.

2) Yes I have used both. I like All in One better. See #1 for reason why.

3) If you have learned SEO from the training here at WA and other current and up-to-date resources (like Google) then the All in One works great. Just place your keywords in the 3-4 needed areas and you are good to go.

As for Yoast, be careful with wasting your time with getting all of the lights green. Three to five of them are no longer needed and/or wrong for high Google rankings like keyword density, outbound links, and number of times focus keyword appears in subheadings.

Again your focus keyword should only appear 3 times at most in your content, unless your content is long form 1,500 to 2,500 words then 4 times would be ok, but anymore than that and even Google says there is no benefit and could hurt your rankings if used too much more.

4) Not in particularly. I just know what works and what no longer works based on the Kyle's WA training, Google's blogs on SEO, and my own personal experience with high Google rankings.

Thanks Robert. There's a lot of chatter online so you have to learn who to listen to. I like your style and the fact that you don't over complicate what is already confusing enough. Keep it simple is usually e best route. Your answers and training always bring a sigh of relief.

I started using All in One but switched to Yoast. I am fascinated by all the red/green lights and probably overdid the whole thing. Can I switch back to All in One after I switched to Yoast?

I just finished Level 1 to Level 5 training here at WA the past holiday weekend, and Kyle didn't really talk much about All In One SEO, maybe just two to three minutes worth. When I read your post, it sounds like I missed some in-depth discussion about All In One SEO, did I?

I have been thinking of changing All in one to Yoast after finishing my WA review. But now that I have read your answer about Yoast vs all in one, I think I would stick with all in one. Your right Robert. Relying on yourself is much better than relying on a plug in.

So I'll just learn everything about SEO and be a good plugin myself. :D

great participation. thanks

look up the training here under all in one SEO. Thanks for the comments.

I agree Douglas

Thank you so much for your comments here. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to do this blog. We all have a chance to learn from each other. Thanks again Robert. Dave.

I want the plugin that will remind me of anything SEO-related that I might have missed; after all, I don't think either plugin would make changes all on its own, correct? Why would I prefer to do it all on my own, risking I might forget something? Having said that, I wouldn't want a plugin that gives me erroneous/outdated recommendations either.

So from what I've read, Yoast is guilty of recommending outdated SEO techniques, can anyone else say they experienced anything similar with All In One SEO?

Great question. Hopefully others will comment on this question. Look below to Loes' blog link: Checklist before you hit the publish button. Dave.

Thanks Douglas. I just don't believe in over-complicating things when they do not need to be.

I believe others have.

Awesome Robert, I could not have said it better.

No, Kyle doesn't talk about it much in the certification couse but he has done a tutorial on the AIO SEO a couple of years.

Just type All in One SEO in the help bar and you will see it.

But other than that the basics of SEO, we should all know from the cetification course training. The basics are pretty simple.

The basics of SEO we are all taught in the training. It just doesn't make sense to have a plugin give me colored lights to "indicate" proper SEO. I have aleady proved a couple of years ago to be able to get content on Google page 1 without having half the lights green.

I look at it this way, Kyle & Carson pre-install AIO SEO because they believe it is better and much easier to use, plus websites rank quicker with it according to Kyle's AIO SEO training from a couple of years ago.

The AOI SEO doesn't have to recommend anything because as long as you do the basics of SEO, the AIO does everything else for us.

Its not that I dont believe you but what are you basing your focus keyword density on? Do you have something written down that I could read please as I am curious?

Keyword density has been pretty much dead and buried since late 2013 when Google Humingbird came out. Anyone following the keyword density model is not benefiting their website and is operating on much of the old information that keeps getting spread.

Google does not rank content based on the amount of times a focus keyword appears anymore. Humingbird uses semantic search and indexing and ranks based on the context of the content and then how that relates to UX and the user's query.

This is one of the reasons why Kyle & Carson have been saying to place your focus keyword in your title, then in the first paragraph, and then write naturally after that. Maybe if your content is long form, repeat the focus keyword one more time near the end of your content in a heading tag, but that is all that is needed for the focus keyword nowadays.

Google doesn't need a focus keyword to understand content like it used to. Even Kyle says in one of is bootcamp trainings, that not every single page and post on your website needs to target a keyword to get ranked, see link below 1st 5 minutes. Google indexes and looks at ALL of the content and understands context.

Well, you are the experienced one. Although I've known about affiliate marketing for a while, I certainly would not consider myself an expert; I just try to use my common sense every step of the way. I will try AIO SEO and then try Yoast on a second website. If what you said about Yoast still giving outdated SEO advice is the case, then it would be one big red mark against it.

Thanks for your feedback.

Read what Kyle's training says.

Yes! Definitely.

Hi Boomer!
With my ADD I have added yoast and still have the all in one.
I sometimes leap before looking. Do you know of a way to undo all the yoast stuff to stay with the all in one?

The first thing to do is Deactivate Yoast and Activate AIO SEO. As for undoing the Yoast stuff, you may have to do that manually yourself.

thanks, Robert. I was hoping you would catch this question. Again I appreciate your vast input on this posting. Dave.

You are welcome Dave.

Thanks! I finally upgraded my site to 4.4 so now would be a good time to do this.

Thanks for this! Being new to this, it is confusing, so I try to keep it as simple as possible. I went with All in one SEO.
Rebecca

This is okay. You may stick with this or change later on. Thanks for your comments. Dave.

Morning Dave and I am sitting down as I am still playing with Yoast and will write a blog later but Yoast is interesting and just now
My site is fourth from top of page one Google so Yoast is not toast!!!

thanks Paul

I started with All in One, but after Yoast for WP came out, I kept reading such great reviews about it, that I switched over. Yoast SEO for WordPress is MAGICAL it works so well and is so simple, streamlined and user-friendly. It's like having a "coach-bot" working with you, making sure every aspect of your post or page is SEO'd to the max.

thanks

You are welcome :-)

I use Yoast. I've been at WA for a little less than two months. For the first month and a half I just set it up and let it go. then I discovered there was lots of stuff I should be doing. But It was confusing so I I switched to Yoast, and despite the fact that my traffic turned into a dessert for a bit I've been really happy with it.
Currently I use LSI Graph to get keyword ideas, check them out in the Free Keyword tool and the plug them into Yoast. I think it's working well.

thanks for the ideas. Dave.

I used All In One SEO when I first started affiliate marketing. I don't think Yoast SEO was in existence then.

I have been using Yoast for about 4 years and I prefer it to All In One SEO.

I find Yoast SEO quick to use. I do write my own Meta description. I like the colored lights. I don't believe that one needs to have every light green but it is a good and quick indication of whether or not your page of post is set to go with SEO.

In having said all of that, I know how SEO needs to be done and maybe my preference for Yoast is purely the HABIT of using it.

thanks for commenting.

How's your rankings Valerie? I just finished moving my AIO to Yoast and suddenly I found this. Confused now. HAHA

My rankings are fine thanks pitin. What is it that you found when you moved from AIO to Yoast? Are you saying that you found my comment? You have left me confused now!!

I mean I found this post :) I used AIO since the beginning and my rankings were fine and i got my first sale as well. Since I am doing a major restructuring, I thought I'd give Yoast a try. But I found out that it might cause conflict with my pro theme so I think I will stick with AIO. Sorry to confuse you.

No problems pitin - Thanks for your prompt reply. I really don't think there is a big issue between the 2 plugins; it's just a matter of preference. If AIO is working for you then I would say - stay with it!

Great comments Valerie and Pitin:) Dave.

I switched to Yoast. It's good.

thanks for the comments.

I started to write about it, but there was so much. It'll have to be a later blog.

For some reason I like Yoast. I used to like All In One SEO.

Now I'm back using All in One because it's recommended here in WA.

Then I checked my site Google Webmasters tool last night, and I found out that Google is showing me that I have errors in my tags.

What I heard that if Google tells you your sites errors - you need to fix it.

Well, I have no idea how to fix. It's so hard to understand the tech stuff that Google's has shown. I think I'll just "no index" the tags.

thank you for the comments.

Hi Dave,All in one seo doesn't really tell you much in my opinion.Where Yoast tells you a lot about what your doing.I use Yoast too.

thanks for the input.

I have used All in One SEO on my main page and find no adverse effects from it. I put Yoast on my "wreck site" and it disappeared from view (website not available). WA says the site is not pointing to WA any longer. Is this because of Yoast? I don't know.
Barry

I am not sure about that Barry. I would ask that as a general WA question and please keep me informed of the answers. Great comment. Dave.

Good idea, Dave. I will write this up as a question and maybe someone will have some feedback useful to me. Thanks for the thought.
B....

Hi Barry,

Did you check your account where you registered your domain name?

It sounds like someone has accessed your account and pointed it to another hosting.

Yes, that's what happened, and now it's back and life is good again.
B....

no problem Barry.

thanks for answering. Dave.

Hi Dave, personally I use Yoast. With it, I can see the SEO score of my posts. It's pretty easy to use and I like the look of it. Again, it is just me. Some of my friends will go with All in one SEO, but as I said, it is easy to use and for me it just more than enough. All the best!

Hey Nenad how do you see the seo score of your posts using yoast? I have installed it and imported my analytics data from all in one seo and that's it so far

Hi, just enter your keyword, and Yoast will calculate the score. If you need any help, I'll be more than happy to help you!

I uploaded an image for you, just in case.

great discussion guys. This will help everyone a lot. Thanks, Dave.

thanks

I like it. good comments. Dave.

good question Aiden

Thanks appreciate it! I'm sure I'll be in touch
