Who Are You Writing For?

A question you have to answer

Who are you writing for?Who is your market?

If you are writing a book it is who is your audience?

If you are building a business where you want to sell things to your visitors then you want to know who would buy what you are offering.

To many people fall into the trap of writing content just to write content. Writing content because you need a certain amount to get ranked. Writing content because Google likes content. Writing content to fill up space.

Wrong answer

From the time you decide what your niche is you need to be thinking about who you are writing for and to.

Who is your market?

As you work on getting traffic just any traffic will not work. It needs to be people who would be interested in what you have written for them to help them.

(One disclaimer. I talk about selling all the time because that is what we do but I do not mean for you to be pushy selling to people. There are ways to do it without being salesy.)

So who is your market?

Who is your content written for?

Your life gets easier when you figure that out?

Question for the day is who is your market? Leave a comment below with who your traffic is. If you do not know leave a comment and we will work on it.

My target audience:

- persons who want to live a longer and healthier life, preventing chronical diseases and pain
- people who are fed up with feeling unwell
- persons who want to change their bad habits into good ones
- persons who does not have much time and need a simple way and motivation to achieve their goal changing their habits
- adults age 25 and upwards

:-)

I am wrting for those who are seeking alternative pathways to their health instead of using pharmaceutical drugs. What is surprising looking at my analytics is that this happens to be the 35 - 44 year old with the largest group being 18 - 24. I wasn't able to get FB statistics on audience.

That is a good audience and also good that you are paying attention to that.

Thank you Bo!

I am writing for those who are wanting to learn how to garden for the first time. For those who have grown a few things but want to learn to grow more. I write for those who have tried but are convinced they are doomed to failure by brown thumbs. I write for those who do not have space to grow outdoors and want to be able to grow inside their homes. I write for anyone who loves plants and wants to learn more. For many who are curious about herbs and how they can benefit their diet and health.

That is a few reasons.

My target audience could be very vast. I do not think there is an age, culture, area, sex or religion restriction on finding joy in gardening.

The last part you mentioned is wide open but the first part writing to new gardeners is a great niche as there is not that much out there for them.

My target audience are parents / grandparents and anyone who looks after children and wants to keep them happily occupied without the kids being glued to a TV screen or playing games on their tablets all day.

I want to suggest games and activities that have always been popular with the children I have looked after and as for what I want to sell - will suggest the most useful toys / games / puzzles / equipment / art materials that will be used again and again and be worth every penny spent on them.

That sounds any of us that have grandkids for sure. Good niche.

What a great post, especially the bit about people write for writings sake!

The short answer is I write for my reader and have 3 specific blogs which cater for different markets within my niche.

Each one is a kind of How to/ Learn How to... which cover Elite Marketing ( obviously! as we are here!) Business Education, because that led me to WA in the first place and lastly Social Media, because thats a subject on its own

Very good it sounds like you are on your way Dave

Thanks Bo, I have been on my way for years, and am successful to, but the one thing WA has taught me, is How to combine the blogs I have, through linking them together, as opposed to a mish mesh of all the subjects rolled into one that just looks a mess

I'm sure you have found the the same thing, because you are experienced in your own right and own sites, which are not WP related

This is who I write for, and it includes myself.

My audience is That shy and quiet person I used to be, he isn't sure of himself, doesn't know what direction to really go in his life, he feels left out and alone, trying to make too many people happy, not realizing he isn't happy and what he is doing will not make him happy until he learns what it all means.

18-33-year-old male lives alone or with somebody who leaves him to himself works a job that is available and not what he wants to do,

Somebody who is looking for help but everything sounds the same and confuses him, behind it all he is a fantastic wonderful person just hoping for a chance to figure it all out and become this amazing gift to the world.

That's where I come in to help these guys/girls, men/women, or anyone else that just hasn't found themselves and is looking for that help.Or is starting to look for that help.

Eric

Hi Eric
The first and third paragraphs are totally me, but I am already over 40 and unemployed with 3 children and a wife to take care of. What type of help do you offer?
David

I will pm you a link and then you can let me know what you think about it.

Great niche Eric way to figure it out. You will do well with that.

Thanks for offering to help Eric. That is what it is all about

Hi, Bo. I have been thinking about that question for awhile. Like Skmorrow, back pain is my niche. It can be tricky trying to get specific because as he says so many people suffer from this condition.
However, a couple of weeks ago I believe I made a break through. I was sitting in the kitchen, and my mom,who suffers from back pain , lost her balance and almost fell as she got up from the couch to join me in the kitchen.

I remember the knotted feeling in my stomach at the thought of her falling. I immediately looked into Standing Aids, which also became a subject of a post. I also explored the concept of making one's home fall proof for an elderly relative and received some heart felt comments from those who were also concerned about their own relatives falling.

The pieces came together. As a caregiver I have come to know a lot about the issue of back pain. However, it becomes a much bigger deal when the issue concerns my aging mom. It occurred to me that I'm not the only one who feels that way. Most people even if they are not as diligent about taking care of their own back pain, take a much different view when it comes to their elderly loved ones.

So those are the people who I should be writing for. This doesn't mean I won't offer tips and solutions on how they can take care of their own back pain --of cause I will. And I do.

However, back pain is increasingly becoming a big concern among elderly people. That said, many want to feel safe in their home without assistance from others. This may mean such things as mobility aids and health equipment designed to give the elderly with back pain a sense of independence and safety.

Thus going forward, and I have already started, I will provide information on how people can help their elderly loved ones manage back pain. I think this is really going to help me gain focus. At least that's the plan.

Thabo

This is a great plan Thabo!
Keep going!
:-)

I am proud of you Thabo you have had a real break through on your site. I am excited to see where it takes you.

Thanks Pernilla. I appreciate that.

At least I know where I'm going. The trick now is getting there.

Well, now you really made me think. I would love some help with getting to the bottom of this. Back pain is my niche, I don't really know how specific to be.

People with back pain, tons of people suffer from back pain. I am taking a different angle, using my experience and how exercise can help.

So first off you want people that would exercise. Are your exercises going to be for older people, younger people, people who are still active, people who are not that mobile lots of things to look at.

I totally agree that writing with a target audience in mind is key. It helps to build the connection and trust that follows if people think that you are writing directly to their interests and concerns. Which is why defining the target market is so important before even getting started.

Yes you are exactly right people need to feel that you are speaking directly to them. They need to connect to you.

See we should all listen to a College Professor and a seasoned vet. Great point great InSite from a man that has been writing most of his life not just as a job or a teacher but as an obvious love of writing! Thanks for the awesome perspective of seasoned writer Mark.

You are welcome Mark and thank you for the kind words.
