Lost My Hard Work

A couple of days ago, while I was writing my long researched review of an affiliate, I was typing merrily along when suddenly my page went blank and I lost all the content I had just typed. I must have turned as white as a ghost (that's hard for me due to my olive/tan complexion) because my husband jumped up from the couch and asked me what was wrong.......I thought I would throw up. I was sick and I was livid!

Well, I thought I would have to re-do everything and, after taking a half hour break while my poor hubby ran around trying to find some "miraculous WP solution", I clicked on the Revision button near the right hand side top. I found that I could restore most of my work except for the last sentence or two. What a relief!!!!!!!!!

Have any of you encountered this? It took me losing a couple of blogs before I discovered this option. I save everything every couple of sentences or editions and couldn't understand why we are not able to recover the draft when something like this happens.

Is it a glitch in WP?

I hope this helps any of you who have experienced this "gut wrenching" feeling.....

Wishing you all you a super fantastic Sunday!

Hey Angela,

Glad everything is okay! :)

Thank you.

Hi Angela
I am glad you got everything back, and could you explain a little more where you clicked to get it back, for me, I did lose my work one time and, did not know I could recover it, is it in the editor where you wright your pages while building your site, an if so where exactly, always remember to save to draft several times, especially if your article or page's are going to be a long, that way you won't lose it all. It may be over kill, but I do it with every paragraph because I did lose my work and don't want to go through that again. I also now before I start writing I do a draft in notepad, or on a piece of paper, that way I remember what I was saying, I have a hard time remembering how I put thing's, when I am writing so it helps. I will also print it out after I am through and file it. Good luck and Love and Prayers Vicki

Hi Vicki. If you look to the top right of your post you are writing there is a button called Revisions. It near the publish button. Click on that and you will see a slider that you can move from left to right and it shows you how far back you want to go back to restore. I plan on being more careful from now on so I don't lose my content. Thank you for visiting my blog. Best wishes to you.

I think I'm going to take Phil's advice with Google Docs.

I think I will too.

Yes I have had that happen, I tried that revision option but it didn't work. So in habit every now and then I click and save to my clip board or if it is a long article I will type it up in my Microsoft word then copy and paste it in. Glad the revision worked for you though! :))

I will definitely be sure to use Microsoft word next time just in case. Thanks Kim. :)

No problem! :))

MS Word has a lot of hidden formatting that can mess up a web post. Most WP editors have an icon for pasting .doc documents which strips out the troublesome formatting. I avoid the hassle entirely by using notepad or some other plain text editor. But yes, write long posts in a word processor and paste it to your WP post.

Thanks Bill. I've gotten tons of helpful tips. Won't get caught again...Best wishes.

I haven't had any problems with it so far. I wrote 3 different blogs on my site that didn't update due to a WordPress failure. One of which was quite long and they were all written from memory. Although I think they came out better the second time. :))

Google Docs, Saves automatically.

Thanks Phil.

What a great relief to see you could restore your review Angela. Really glad you are able to complete your work and post it. I know the feeling also of putting in lots of work and something happens and it gets lost. Wishing you great success. :)))

Yeah my blood pressure dropped a few points when I retrieved my work...lol. Thank you for visiting my blog. All the best to you. :)

I had this problem when I changed sites and I lost everything but I found out that support had backed up everything I had on my old site so they got it all back so yes I know that others will appreciate this post all the best.

Thanks for stopping by my blog Max. Enjoy your day.

I had it when I updated the WP to 4.0, so I know how you felt, I allmost got a heartattack is one of my blogposts:) I know I am a lot more secure with my backing ups, Loes

Loes I am very intense when I work as I'm sure every one here is as well. So, yes when something like that happens out of the blue, you do feel a physical change. I'm still working on relaxing and not panicking so easily.....reminds me I need to back up my site again. Have a great day my friend.

I had that issue when i lost my internet connection a couple of times but i had the luck to discover almost immediately that WP is saving it for us every now and then. I don't think I had an actual WP issue but only my connection were slow or broken.

Hi Sinisa. Working with technology is risky. We have problems with our internet here in Puerto Rico quite often so I have to work online when the weather is good because if it rains or storms, we lose the connection for hours. Thank you for reading my blog. Best wishes to you. Angela

Oh, Angela, I know that feeling when your throat drops into your stomach! I write in MS Word, too, and they DO have a good backup program; however, I used to work on a typesetter at a newspaper back in the 70s. On that ancient machine, you had to save every line. I got into the habit of reaching for that key. It's a pain, but it's second nature to me now, so. . .

Glad you got most of your work back. Good job hitting save every couple of lines! It will save you many times!

Hi Carla. Thank you for stopping by my blog. I felt so much better afterwards and changed my mind about "slitting" my wrists when I realized all was not lost. Good thing I waited.......lol
