Choosing the Right Domain Name

There are two words I've used periodically while on this platform: "overwhelmed" and "stuck".

I haven't used either in a while, but as I embarked on the training in Bootcamp, the dreaded "stuck" has made a reappearance.

I'm excited to have been able to pinpoint a target customer, but I've been racking my brain to select a domain name. I've read Kyle's post which discusses the options of using "keyword rich" or brandable domain names.

UGH!!!

How did you come up with your domain namei? Did you opt for a keyword rich name or something more brandable? Or did you just have a name that just came to mind that you felt would be a good fit?

Help a gal in need. Thank you.

Strive to Thrive,

Veronica

I do both. I'm currently using a keyword rich domain name in Siterubix. I'm going to see how it goes because if I change my mind,..I can move it to a different domain name. That's the beauty of this online biz thing - it can usually be fixed or changed.

I get tense over the details sometimes too, but it always works out. You'll find the right domain name. :-)

Wendy

What do you mean, "you can move it to a different domain name"?

Well, I've been puttering around with a couple of Siterubix sites since I didn't feel like buying a domain name until I'm sure I want to commit to a particular niche.

Somewhere in the training I noticed Kyle mentijon the "move" feature in StieRuix. You can just move everything to a paid domain once you build up a Siterubix site, or just keep it a Siterubix domain. They're free, why not?

The Siterubix sites allow me to play around with domain names and experiment with WP layouts. If I decide I don't like something, or I want to go in a different direction - I can just delete the siterubix site.

Am I answering your question? LOL.

OK....this thought came to mind yesterday, but when I read your comment, my mind didn't connect the dots, lol.

Yes, you have answered it perfectly, Wendy. Thank you!

Hi Veronica, here's a website that's quite handy. Just add a word you want in your name e.g. Home. You can also join a couple together - just enter it as a single word e.g. workfromhome.

The site then returns options with suggested words before yours and after yours e.g. homebiz or workfromhomebiz (after your word).

From the results you're able to select your preference of where your word should be (start of name or end of name).

Green means it's available.

Hope that helps - have fun

Owww!!! I like that! I really appreciate that, Gary. Thank you!

I just started to take a look, Gary.......amazing!
I gotta make sure that I don't get lost in the search.

My pleasure Veronica :) Glad you like it and you're right. It's very easy to keep paging down.

Good Morning Veronica,

As I am not promoting WA I can not help you there.
When I chose the 2 names for my websites it reflected my passions and or hobbies. To be honest it was a gut feeling without really having knowledge about how to proceed. Now many months later I am still happy with that choice. I think we women just have that type of intuition.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

I'm aware that I might be over thinking this, Taetske, perhaps I'm just nervous. Thanks for your comment

Hi, Veronica depends on where you are heading, you will get heaps of opinions around domain names. I mean it is the street address for your house and some suburbs are better than others.
Depends on how you are going to niche down I guess. if it is in that review style then go with the keyword rich domain names, if you are taking that broader approach looking long term, to develop that brand then, something that reflects your energy if that makes sense.

What ever name you go for you need to have a connection with it and a sense of where you are taking it. You are building a relationship with it as well as your audience. One thing that I have learned if you get that inspiration then buy it yesterday because today it will be gone.
If you are looking for some inspiration then have a look at expired domains. There can be some real gems lurking in this area.

I appreciate what you shared, Alex. On one hand, it seems like it would be the simplest thing. On the other hand, it really will be an extension of me. Eeekk!!!

You guys gave me some great tips, so I'll make sure to take look. Thanks, Professor!

Hey V. I address that in this post. Of course I was focused on a niche other than WA/work from home but the same principles apply such as logical, short, easy to remember etc.

I want it to feel "right" but I also don't want to waste another week thinking about a name. I'll make to give that a read.

Thanks, Jessica!

I wouldn't worry about keyword rich domains or EMDs (Exact Match Domains). It's content that ranks these days, not domain names.

I'd rather have a brand such as http://www.boohoo.com than something as limiting as http://www.buycheapdesignerwomensclothesonline.com

Your domain name doesn't even have to be relevant, if it did http://www.amazon.com would sell river trips and http://www.apple.com would sell fruit! It can even be personal, http://www.craigslist.com :)

This is an eye opener for a newbie like me.
I get your point. Content matters.

Gifty.

That's so funny that you mentioned this, Rich, because I had the same thought late last night! Initially, my focus was on a name that people would immediately know what the site was about. Then I thought, "Why?"

I'm very creative, so I'll play around with that line of thinking a bit and see what I come up with. Thanks for your input, Rich.

There's some great tips, Gifty. All the best moving forward!

No probs. you're most welcome! :)

For me, I was thinking about whom I wanted to target, which was all the people like myself that have spent years working for the benefit of others, never making a great salary, while making their boss rich. As I was contemplating that, I thought about the kinds of conversations I would have with people about this business and what kept coming to mind was "aren't you tired of working for someone else? Isn't it time to start working for you?" Thus was StartWorkingforYou born.

In all honesty, I probably could have come up with something better, and likely would have gone for a keyword-inspired name, but overall I like it and feel it has a decent ring to it.

I like how you talked yourself through that, Craig. When I wasn't getting anywhere with the keyword search, I started to ask myself similar questions.

Thanks for your feedback, Craig!

My pleasure.
Yes, I talk myself quite a bit. Probably too much. I have noticed however, that it seems to be a managerial thing Almost every manager I have had has done the same.

I think it's a good idea to keep it brandable and maybe even a bit loose so that to be able to twist the niche a little if needed, or go more specific ,in the future. And as for the key words, I read recently that we could go after them in our posts, not necessarily in the domain name.

I know that some people actually promote having a keyword rich domain name, but I have already spent several hours looking for the "right" keyword. I think I'll be going with something more brandable and leave the keywords for my posts.

Thanks for your comment, Vera.

You are welcome, Veronica. Hope it helped.:)

It really did, Vera!

:)

Hi Veronica. I chose to go with something brandable. Something that looks good in print. You can always do the keyword search and add that to your titles or content of your site, but people need something catchy to remember and pass on to others. Just my opinion. Good Luck!!

That makes perfect sense, Steve. I'd rather something that lingers in people's mind. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Veronica! A challenge indeed, lol!
When I found my domain name I had a similar issue. The ones I wanted were not available. I began my search lookimg only for dot com sites. Typing in what came to mind and checkimg keywords also. It didnt take long to come up with a few and the one I picked felt right. You know that feeling!
Im confident that if you start a list and check whats available, you Will find the perfect one. Have a friend with you to get a second opinion. It helps.

Best of luck! It will be perfect!

Mark

I was thinking of running it by someone else as well. I was feeling a lot more stressed in looking for a domain that had a keyword, but I already jotted down some names that just feel right. I'll leave the keywords for my posts.

Thanks for your input, Mark.
