Hi! I am an Alaskan girl with interests in nutrition, pets, gardening, healthy cooking and the geography and cultures of the world. My specific niche ideas are listed at the end of this profile.

I have a BA in Anthropology with a minor in Environmental Studies and I am close to finishing my graduate degree in Ocean and Coastal Studies.

My husband and I both grew up in remote parts of the state with dog teams in the real Alaska. We now live in Anchorage, and have three wonderful kitties and both work for the State of Alaska. I have worked for the Department of Natural Resources for 7 years, and love my job but I have always wanted to be independent and be my own boss. Growing up in the bush, you do everything for yourself. You get your own water, grow your own food, heat your home, even build your own system to produce electricity as my Dad did. When you lose the ability to be independent living in a city you feel restricted sometimes. While it is nice to be able to just go to the store and buy whatever you want, it is frustrating to lose all the beauty and space and time to enjoy the world outside. You have to worry about all these other people!

Niche ideas:
1) I want to share all I have learned about nutrition over the last several years as I have struggled with serious health problems. Most of my issues come back to nutrient deficiency, but it took a car accident to compound the problems and bring them to light. Through years of painful firsthand experience I have learned how common nutrient deficiency is and how it can be alleviated.
After so many doctors and tests that revealed nothing, I finally started to find the guidance I needed to actually identify and fix my problems. It was scary to feel like I might not be able to keep my job due to health problems and I felt completely helpless. I want to offer information to others who are struggling with these very common issues that can be helped greatly with the proper nutrients.

2) Products to help cats with behavior issues. I have personally experienced a total 180 in my cat who used to pee on everything and be scared. With a pheromone collar and calming drops, he is happy, content and doesn't have any issues. So many pet owners (including myself) try getting prescriptions from vets that are expensive, taste horrible, the pets don't want to take and don't work well. Others give up and get rid of their pets with behavior problems. All they need is the information that, effective solutions are out there and easy to buy. These products are on Amazon.

3) I also want a niche for natural supplements for pet health. I use a line of pet products that has finally cured my 3 cats' upper respiratory infections. Before I found this, we had years of vet visits and prescription antibiotics, prescription eye drops, ointments etc. They were very expensive and didn't work well either. Another product in the line helps with gum disease and bad teeth. The alternative was more expensive vet visits to have dental work done and teeth extracted under anesthesia every year!!

I look forward to working with all of you,
Jessica

Hello Jessica,
I finally managed to upload my photo to my twitter.
Your suggestion prompted me to read the 'help center' section of twitter and I found out that my photo must be in JPG, GIF or PNG format. My past photo was in BMP format.
Thank you for your great suggestion.

Hi Jessica!

Do you hibernate and work on the biz? Do you get to take snow days off from your day job?

Thought this might be kind of a personal question for the main blog.

We had 3 - 5" of snow, 18 - 21 F some days and it did not melt for about 4 days. During this time we had an ice storm. Then it warmed up and we had pouring rain and floods.

We thought that was bad enough! Are you ok?

We occasionally get days off for weather but not often. It has only happened about twice since I have worked there for 9 years! Usually that only happens if there is really bad ice and it is dangerous to drive. They will send people home early more often so they can avoid rush hour traffic.

We got sent home when our whole building lost power this winter!

Thank you for your concern! It got sunny and it was so nice outside this afternoon!

Aloha Jessica!
You have an amazing story behind you. I have lived in booney places too, so I understand some of that, but Alaska booneys top's what I've been through and sled dogs, how cool is that! My love is also in Natural Resources, I am not sure if I will further my degree. I just want to make being here at WA my study, there is so much opportunity within this community. I know you will succeed and I pray and thank our heavenly Father, Yahweh for healing you, in Yahshua Messiah's name. I always wanted to go to Alaska. I have a couple friends who live there.

Bless you my friend!

I saw you were interested in Natural Resources also! I have not gone to school for that but had 9 years of on the job training so far as a Natural Resource Specialist for the state. I really enjoy where I work and don't want to leave. That is part of my desire to make a successful business on the side. My job is great but doesn't pay well enough with the cost of living here.

Thank you for your wishes. I hope you are very happy and successful here! I also hope you make it to Alaska someday. There are many direct flights on Alaska Airlines!

Your awesome Jessica! I will remember that, Mahalo nui! I just realized that you said you never went to school prior to having your job in Natural Resources. I am envious, but its all good, your probably a natural from just the way you grew up. Part of my plan is to succeed here so I can pay off all those school loans I maxed out.

Oh I went to school, just not in Natural Resources. I had an Associate's Degree and a B.A. in Anthropology with minor in Environmental Studies. I was also already a graduate student in Oceanography when I started the job. I understand years and years of school. I spent 10 years on my Master's courses since I could only afford to take one class at a time! I had taken Geographic Information Systems courses also (map making) and that was the key to getting the job. I was the map person making all the maps for state land use plans when I started out. Later I worked up to being a land use planner, and now I am an adjudicator for water use.

Hi, Jessica, very nice meeting you! I too had health problems because of nutritional deficiencies. I´ve found that most all disease relates back to this, which really amazed me at the time.

Must be awesome to grow up in nature and becoming self-sufficient. I´d be lost in the wilderness I reckon.

All the best to you and I wish you lots success in your online businesses and in your studies.

Wow `Jessica - I envy you're early years - 'in the bush - when we talk about the 'bush' in Africa we mean elephants, lions, giraffe, buck, snakes, big open plains. And I long to live in that part of this continent - quietly 'in the bush' - I think we all long for the quiet. The city makes us 'dependent ON' - through WA we want to be 'independent OF - great meeting someone in the opposite side of the globe - and the other end of the globe.
I DO have one of my 'bucket list' experiences is to travel the Inside passage to Anchorage. Looking forward to that sometime!!

Yes, here it's mostly the weather and long distances that make living in the bush a challenge. Extreme cold (unless you are on the coast where it is very mild), little sun in winter, endless sun in summer...in places there are large earthquakes (we had 2 over 7.0 in my memory and one at 9.2 in 1964. We even have volcanoes close enough we can see them smoking from my office building in the city. It's a dramatic area but I love it!

I am sure you would love the cruise along the coast here!
Nice to meet you,
Jessica

Hi Jessica:

I read your profile after responding to your post about FB. I love your niches that you are exploring - all three of them. I too have struggled with health problems that the doctors' tests were nit able ti reveal so I am meeting regularly with a nutritious who knows her stuff. Also, I am a HUGE cat lover so I love those niches you have as well. We might be able to help each other out by linking from our websites because I just launched a website about black cats,

Well I am following and I wish you the best of luck,

Hi Steph,
I thought I was following you already! Sorry! I am way behind in replying and following back since I have been away for a few months and not as active here. With the holidays over I hope to be more involved now.

I don't see your website listed on your profile. If you send me a link I would love to see it. Thanks for the message here and the thoughts of linking our sites!

I just checked out your cat site also. Very informative. I had to relinquish my laptop for about 10 minutes as "RUBY" had to check it out. Right on my keyboard....she allows me to use it. Whatever you do, don't put music on it of meowing cats...I'll never get back on the computer! GREAT SITE! Judy

Hi Jessica,
Nice to meet you and welcome to WA. You have a lot of great ideas for niches with knowledge and experiences. You will do great. Thank you for the follow and I am following back.

I like your ideas of more natural way of treating illnesses and such. I work in a pharmacy two days a week and looking forward to quitting soon. Mainly I don't like all the prescription drugs on the market that seem to cause more harm then good.

I wish you the best in your venture here. :)

Hello, my name is Jessica. I have met two other Alaska people on here but that is all. Thanks for saying hi! I lived in the Wrangell St Elias National Park and in Valdez before moving to Anchorage. My husband and I both did homeschool. He grew up at Caribou Lodge in the Talkeetna Mountains (Not the Caribou Lodge in Glennallen)
Nice to meet you!
