Bye Bye Instagram! Hello Ello!
Hello everyone,
In March I started to use Instagram and after 2,5 months of use, over 400 posts, almost 600 followers I can say I am not exactly convinced using Instagram as a great social tool for my projects.
Now Instagram is not bad, do not get me wrong, but Instagram is moving towards specializing on the bigger sharks selling advertisement and use your data to analyse what advertisement to show you in your personal feed.
The Big Sharks
If you are a big shark, Instagram might work for you after spending money for advertisement. But if you are like me, a starter, it is a hard nut to get exposure at all. Instagram is fine-tuning their algorithm more and more and is not exposing us to a wider crowd unless we get a lot of attention from users by liking and commenting on our posts, which is in the beginning as good as nihil, so making it extra hard to build something up at all.
From my analyse I can tell you that I only reach 3-5% of my followers and that is sheer a waste of time and money. To get more exposure you need to interact as well, with what, others advertisements? That is something I do not like either at all, there is for over 50% of spam on Instagram, posts, personal messages and live story, and that is not exactly I am looking for... Just my opinion.
Instagram Punishments
Furthermore Instagram is punishing anyone who is leading people away from Instagram, say what??? Yes you got that right. Then why using Instagram at all? Well just use it to be present, but my opinion is it is a waste of your time and money to invest too much time in it. You better write blogs on your websites with great keywords and build up your brand first before you go full time Instagram. Oh and do not use automated tools as Instagram is punishing you for those too now...
Now Kyle and Carson said it is a great platform, yes true if you are a big shark already, and Kyle and Carson are big sharks seen the 1.000.000+ WA users they have, so much easier to get their followers on Instagram and get more exposure.
I have followed up their advise, posting personal stuff, no advertisement either, but my experiences are not exactly great. I get an average of 20-30 likes per post, but you have to ask yourself in how far people are really interested, or just clicking like to be liked.
Many follow you to unfollow you just the very next day, week or month too, Very annoying, Instagram says they shadow banning these accounts, but I have not seen much change into that.
Hello Ello
So what is next? An alternative to Instagram? Yes there is. If you are an artist like I am and besides of writing also make art, photos or even music, then have a look at the social platform Ello that is working based on your work as an artist and not with the eye on making money with your content selling advertisement. :)
Off course you do not need to be an artist, although you are if you are a writer. Give it a try and look this platform up. I signed up and will see in how far I can compare it to Instagram. I read an article from a person who left Instagram and switched to this one last year. This person had over 16.000 followers, well that says something right?
Let me know what you use, what is your experience and do you love sheer advertisement...?

So refreshing to hear someone else say what we think - that Instagram is a waste of time! Have tried it out several times and just get fed up with the constant follow you one day then unfollow you the next! It is like 2 steps forward, 1 step back and is so demoralising.
Time is much better spent building a sustainable brand and business elsewhere.
Exactly, and it is important we bring this message to others not to make the same mistake. We are all here to help each other, at least I would expect so. :))
Try Ello and let me know what you think of it Jon.
Good comment Jon and one I agree with, which is back up by my stats telling me the same thing. They tell me where to go and work... I do.
Hi Stefan,
I have started to use Instagram beginning of this year.
I was posting pictures I took myself.. did not get much followers but that did not bother me at all.
Then suddenly my account has been deleted, and till now I have no idea why.
I wrote a short blog about it here at WA. My Instagram Account Was Deactivated About 2 weeks ago I have created a new account, just for the sake of "having an IG account"
I do not expect much from IG, though.
I totally agree with you what you have posted. I think I missed the train when it comes to Instagram. But that does not make me sad at all.
There will be another opportunities, so we just need to keep our eyes open.
I will also take a look at the Ello Platform. I am not an artist, but I enjoy taking pictures of countryside, or just whatever I find interesting.
cheers
Mike
Well Mike, that is the point, if you make photos like that you are an artist in your very own way and that is where Ello will help you with. Everyone has a talent for something, you don't need a study for that. :))
The problem with IG is if the algorithm changes and filters your account as spamming or whatever, it may ban you without reason and I think that may have happened to you.
Looking forward to see your photos Mike. :))
Interesting post, but not one that should contain surprises really given that it's owned by Facebook and that is leaning more towards advertising and specifically for the big sharks as you call them, because they are copying what Google and YouTube have done and are doing... Business Advertising
Personally, I stopped using Social Media so much back in December, preferring to focus on building my list using the advertising methods which work really well for me and contine to do so...
That sector is specifically geared towards small business advertising, and over the last few years has rewarded me very nicely, hence why I stay in that niche
Equally you don't have to put up with Algorithm changes, such as reach declining and can actually focus on helping people grow their business by documenting what you do either on your blog, through YouTube or in my case a combination of both
Sorry to prattle on but it's based on a daily observation of the changes occurring and transitions needed
Exactly, Youtube will give you faster exposure with the right videos than Instagram ever will. The so called Live function, what sense does it make to use it to get new followers if it gets deleted after 24 hours??
Only for a sales action or because it won't fit on your profile it makes sense...
I will study some of your techniques to see what can help me to adapt it to my kind of content if you don't mind. :))
A presence is ok, but it will only work if you spend lots of time and as described above, if we have no follower-ship at all it will be very hard to build anything up and it is a waste of time, we better build otherwise and can later when the time is right add it, maybe hire someone who will do this for you. (outsourcing) :)
I created my account today and it offers interesting alternatives to Instagram, like you can add if you like to get hired / contacted by brands for your business or just to sheer collaborate with others. :)) I forgot to mention that Instagram is also punishing on # and will shadow ban you if you use 30# what was expected to be the maximum, you better go for +- 10# then you need to look up the banned # otherwise you get punished as well if you used a banned one no matter if it got banned afterwards.... :O it all makes it very hard for anyone building a new account on Instagram, therefore try this alternative and foremost please do not use the portals to advertise, just think for yourself: would you love it to see advertisements on your timeline non stop? Cheerio see you over there.
Yes, Also I agree with you, Building an audience with Instagram has become quite difficult now.
I just put up my first writing post :)) I will use it to give short extracts or examples what the reader can expect when visiting my website, promoting my art in this way should be ok. :))

I agree Stefan,
Instagram isn't for everyone. I know when I use the platform, I'm not looking to buy or to sign up for anything.
I look for ideas for different projects I might be working on.
Thanks for sharing.
Great to hear we are on the same wavelength Jackie. :) Although I thought IG will brand what I do, it is wishful thinking that is going to happen anytime soon.... so I will keep it up but minimize my efforts and see how I will manage with Ello :))
