3 Reasons Having a Dream is Important!

Dreams, sweet dreams... everyone dreams, but not everyone has dreams.

Think back if you will to the years of your childhood. Remember, what did you want to be? Regardless of what that dream was, at that time you had no doubts about reaching that dream. Anything seemed possible.

Fast forward to today... what happened? Did your dream fade away? Did you somehow decide it wasn't possible? Did someone you loved and respected tell you to stop dreaming and accept life as it is?

In my case, the daily litany of be realistic, stop dreaming, get real, slowly beat my dream to death. I learned that you must go along with the crowd, don't stand out, thinking for yourself is bad, and all the other negatives that society throws at you every day.

But... somehow, deep inside, I knew that a spark of greatness still smoldered, just waiting for the right time to blaze forth and change my life!

When I was coming to the end of my formal schooling I was asked what do you want to do for a living, I thought a bit and picked a field to work in. The counselor told me what I would need to learn to succeed in that field. I applied myself, and became successful in that field of endeavor.

After awhile, I noticed that the type of work I had chosen determined my lifestyle, where I lived, what kind of house I lived in, the type of vehicle I drove, my bank balance (or lack of one), even the kind of people I socialized with.

I realized that my choice of profession had defined my life and that I wasn't very happy with that style of living. My mind started thinking back to the dreams I had as a child and I found that none of those dreams had happened. I wondered, Why?

Determined to find an answer, I started reading books written by individuals who had succeeded in business, politics, and life in general. I learned something profound!

The advice I was given when leaving school was exactly backwards.. what I did was define my job which defined my station in life. What I should have done instead was to define the life I wanted, find someone who was living that life, and copy what they did to reach that point. If I duplicated their efforts I could duplicate their lifestyle.

A simple enough concept, not so easy to do.

When I tried doing this I found it impossible to begin... why, I had no dreams! This lead me to:

Reason #1:

You must have a dream in order to define what you want out of life. A dream gives you a framework of what you want.

Reason #2:

If you have no dream, you have no reason to set goals. Goals act to guide you on your journey.

Reason #3:

Without a dream, it is impossible to develop a plan. To achieve your dream you must have a viable step by step plan.

So, dream, dream big, dream what everyone else says is impossible, for the only true impossibility is success without a dream.

Remember what you once dreamed of doing, look around and find the lifestyle you want and dream again!

thanks for this post ... timely and wonderful

Joe, I love this. I am a dreamer. Never have stopped but spent my life in jobs. Ten years in Biology (BS in Biology). Ten years in Accounting (MS in Accountancy). It all led me to Wealthy Affiliate. My own business what I have always dreamed of at last. Always keep the dream alive!

Great tips, Joseph!! :) I have many dreams not fulfilled yet, lol. :)

I get up every day because I have a dream.

Hi Joseph, you are so right, without a dream, a vision, you keep running around in circles, use your imagenation to create a brilliant future:)

All such good thoughts. I have done some of this reflection and am working on my dreams again. Thanks for sharing. :)

Thanks Joe. I agree with each of the points you made.
I think WA is not the dream. It is the vehicle to our dreams.
Go really well Joe.

3 very good points, Joe. Think about what you wanted to do as a child before all the negativity set in. Never thought about your work defining your lifestyle but you're right.

I really like your post! I recently did a post Dream Big! It is never too late for our dreams to come true! :) Christa!

Thanks for sharing this. Awesome stuff
