Is this true?

I am trying to find a plug in that can create an app for the phone, this is wiziapp if this isnt approved with WA is there one we can use?

not sure if WA approved that for now:)

Who do I contact? I am really just looking for a plug in to create a phone app. Does anyone know one that does work?

Makes sense to me. For now I'm going to stop downloading what appear to be cool plugins.

If the service is trusted, the plugin is coded properly, then we can look into allowing an outgoing connection. However a LOT of plugins are problematic and they unnecessarily connect to external servers. This is not only a security issue, but in many cases the plugins will require the external connection to load your site. If the external server is not available, your site doesn't load.

We put these measures in place because a lot of plugins out there are horribly coded, they offer little value, and they make all kinds of unnecessary connections to outside servers.

Obviously we allow many outgoing connections.. Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Twitter, WordPress.. all the trusted services and 100's more. We simply block untrusted plugins until we trust them.

I'll make a note to look into Shareaholic and Backupwp.

Thanks,

Carson

Carson, it might be a nice idea to start a list of plugins that are allowed on the WA servers then members could just check the list before adding them to their sites. Could save everyone a lot of hassle. Maybe there is already a list somewhere?

Also a button under dashboard that says "latest updates to WA" or "important wa news" would be a great way for all members to have instant access to the latest updates, rules. and changes as they happen. Just a thought. :)

Hey there!

I will definitely keep this in mind, great suggestions :)

Carson

Kewl :)

Would this include the Wordfence plug-in Carson? It's giving me a "Curl 7" error.

Will you please include plug-in for forums? I need it so badly. Thanks, Carson.

Any update on this? Sorry I couldn't find it.

Quoting from support here:

We've had a lot of issues across servers with wordpress plugins that try to connect to remote servers. Essentially, what happens is that a remote service may go offline (ie. a service that verifies someone paid for a plugin), and then their website goes down. Or worse, requests to their site hang and create a connection backlog on the web server, causing the entire server to go down. In addition, people who have installed insecure plugins on their sites get their site hacked into, and the intruder injects code that makes connections to remote servers (again this can bring the entire server down if the remote connections hang). For these reason, we are implementing a policy to block all outgoing connections, except for those that have been preapproved. For dropbox and wordpress we are comfortable with approving, because they run very reliable services. We are working to have exceptions to all wordpress servers in our firewall. We will add dropbox. For plugins that require an activation, we need to be reassured that this is a one-time activation and that this activation code is not checked every time the wordpress site is loaded. Since we host so many plugins, if we allow them to connect remotely, there is a high chance that one of those plugins will have a service outage at any given time, and this potentially means outages for people's sites. We cannot have our own hosting service dependent on the performance of 3rd party services unless we have a high confidence in the availability of those 3rd party services.

The reason this is affecting some sites and not others is because this measure has not been rolled out to all servers yet. We are testing on only a couple servers first and refining our firewall measures before rolling out to all servers.

Aw, Craig, mate, brilliant. Thank you for getting a "definitive" answer, it's much appreciated. Kudos!! Rich.

This quote was from a ticket created over a week ago. So maybe they've changed minds going off response Rodney posted. Or could be that the support person wasn't aware.
I guess Carson or Kyle will need to clear this up.

I'm "guessing" perhaps some Members have been using "tools" that are either pose a security issue or risk getting the servers blacklisted. Also, this "may" explain why BackWPUp isn't working for some Members. I'm hoping that Craig (@welshy) will be along to comment shortly, as I recommend his BackWPUp training almost daily. Rich.

I use sociable plugin

Pinterest works on this post, or any post with an image.

I do not use shareaholic maybe it is blocked here there a few plugins that can overload the servers and are just not allowed maybe it is one of em.

Did a search and nothing came up about it,

Did you put in a ticket and ask on the website sign in page

Well no. Never have bugged them for anything other than problems.

What do you use for people that like to hit share buttons?

I don't either from my other websites on here. So what's up with that support comment?

I have no problem using backup to my Dropbox

I never did get it working on my site hosted at GoDaddy. Bummer deal!
