Thank goodness there's no sexism here! Or is there?

One thing I love about being an affiliate marketer is that it doesn't matter what size, shape, color or gender we are - we can all succeed in this business if we put the hard work on.

And I've never been aware of any overt sexism here at Wealthy Affiliate - my experiences are completely positive and this community is simply amazing.

BUT...

OMG - it's lurking here, in the most unlikely place!

And I stumbled across this conundrum by accident.

You see, I was writing a post for my website using SiteContent and I needed a picture of a man in underwear for the point I was making (don't ask, another long story), so I decided to use the fantastic image search tool now available in SiteContent.

I searched for Underwear.

Here's a snapshot of the images I was presented with:

All images of women. And these are the less raunchy ones.

I tried a few different options like:

  • Underwear Man
  • Male pants
  • Male Model

Nup... nothing.

In the end I was able to get some results by searching 'mens underwear.'

Check this out...

Yip - two pairs of boxers in the top middle image. That was it!

To be quite honest, this doesn't really bother me, it was actually a source of mild amusement (and probably a distraction from the blog I was laboring over!)

I was just surprised to see such a gender bias in the stock photos we have access to. Has anyone else noticed anything similar like this?

Below is a list of the most sexist jobs in the US (source Forbes.com):

  1. Insurance sales agents
  2. Retail salespersons
  3. Sales and related workers (all other)
  4. Real estate brokers and sales agents
  5. Personal financial advisors
  6. Marketing and sales managers
  7. Education administrators
  8. General Managers
  9. Operations managers
  10. Physicians and surgeons

Thank goodness Affiliate Marketing doesn't feature on this list!

Food for thought.

Cheers, Karen

I am NOT going to send you a picture of me in my underwear!!! I don't want to be known as "the guy that broke the internet"!!! Good luck finding a suitable jock-shot...:-)

Crisis averted - I found the suitable pic on another clipart site; so no... you don't need to take one for the team! Cheers, Karen

#7 is Education Administrators. Maybe used to be but where I live it goes the other way, Many school department's administrative teams are all women from the top (Superintendent) down.
Yes there are problems with equality but take this list with a grain of salt, maybe?

PS I'm probably going to get a lot of push back on this.

This list talked about pay parity - taken from businessinsider.com.au (sorry I thought it was Forbes magazine for some reason). For education providers; Women’s pay as a percentage of men’s is 67.2%. - it wasn't a recent article - so perhaps things have changed now?

It depends. In education for the most pay is set before the opening is posted and not negotiated after. And, because it is public information it's often possible to find out what the last person in the role was making. But there is still pay inequality I'm sure/

interesting!

Do you mean there is a niche for me in my underwear? some thought will go into that URL

you never know - you may be on to something!

Even in a modern country as The Nederlands, this exists. By law, companies have to attract men, women, immigrants and the disabled, regardless sexual preferences, religion or age, but it doesn't work that way. People who do not fit the picture are under-qualified or over-qualified. It's the legal way to say "I don't want your age, color or gender."

I think there will always be some distinction, whatever form it might be.

Sad but true! At least with affiliate marketing these barriers don't exist - or at least not that I've seen!

I've never come across any so far.

Very funny. I used to work in an all Male environment that was very sexist, so I put a large image of David Beckham in nothing but his y fronts on my desk They said nothing...lol
I had a lovely view every day. Shame you couldn’t find that image.
I don’t think there is any sexism here, it wouldn’t last long anyway.
Happy hunting.
With Grace and Gratitude

hahaha, Karen, good on you, thanks for your comments :)

This reflects Wealthy Affiliate, everyone finding the humour in your post and not getting their knickers in a knot!

Good one Tania.... pun intended!

I have checked the database and you are correct the images you posted are the tamer versions.

I would like to say that this does not reflect anything here at WA, but is more of a reflection of the internet as a whole.
There is way too much information out there involving women in (or out of) underwear.

I find WA more of an online haven where ideas and information are freely shared without bias or intention.

I have not noticed any kind of gender bias in anything else at WA, so hopefully, this is as I say just a reflection of the web in general.

Alex

Absolutely Alex!

You aren't even showing the good ones! I have seen some that I have to shut the laptop real quick so my kids don't see them :)

It's pretty funny what is available. I guess with over one million images, there will be some interesting stuff.

haha, I know what you mean - I had to scroll down the page to find stuff that wasn't too risque! And my boy is all grown up hahaha. Thanks for reading, cheers, Karen

I don't find your results all the surprising, that is how it has been for many years. Time for a change hey!

Perhaps we can put in a request to Pixabay or go through Kyle and Carson for some other options.

That's actually a great idea! Cheers, Karen

I hope you follow it up. If I can help please let me know.

Interesting. What if you search for Batman? Does that count? Just kidding. I’m going to search for mechanic just to see results. :)

haha, that's very funny. I should have searched for mechanic!
