I was stricken with Polio in the mid 1950's and was fitted with braces and crutches. I was able to get around quite well in the beginning.

Tried to find a regular job, in the mid 1970's, but businesses weren't very handicapped accessible. Started my own upholstery business and did that from 1977-2008, when I finally gave up on it.

I had a few jobs, in the 1970's, but none of them lasted and at one job, the previous owner's wife, whom was showing me what to do, had no empathy, for my disability.

I was parking in the rear of the building and climbing about 20 metal stairs, but she didn't want me parking there, because I was taking up a customer's parking spot. She figured I should park about 1/2 block away, where the other employees parked, even though it was winter, with snow and ice and I walked with braces and crutches!

Someone suggested getting disability plates for my car, so I then parked in front of the store, on the street, and only had 3 steps to go up, to get to my job. She was old fashioned and wanted me to do things her way, even though I had just come out of the Tech School and new the right way of doing things.

The upholstery business was doing okay, but I could not depend on the income, so in July 1989, I learned how to operate a computer, then got a job with a Temp Agency. I was then able to get a full time job at their first client, a Medical Insurance Claims Processing Center, but the stress was too much and quit in October 1995.

Had an accident, in June 1999, found out I had a hiatal hernia, which needed to be fixed because it was causing me to lose blood, which caused me to lose iron and I had blacked out. I could not get Medicaid because I made too much money with the daily paper routes, the weekend paper routes and what little I made with my upholstery.

Tried to keep doing the upholstery, but just could not make it, so I got another job, taking incoming calls, at a Customer Service Call Center, in September 1999. The last program I worked on, was working with people on government assistance, requesting new EBT cards and answering questions.

I worked there 3 months, in order to get medical coverage, so I could get my hiatal hernia surgery done in February 2000. After leaving there, I still could not make it on the upholstery and was doing a daily newspaper route and also delivering about 2,000 weekly shoppers, by motor route.

In April 2002, I had to quit the daily paper routes in order to apply for Social Security Disability and was able to get on SSI and Medicaid, until I got my first disability check that fall. When I got that, I lost the SSI, but was able to keep the Medicaid and later was able to get on Medicare.

I left there and ended up getting on Disabled Social Security, kept trying to do upholstery and was also delivering 2,000 weekly shoppers on a motor route. The company didn't pay good, then had an accident and totaled my van.

I had just moved into a low income housing, so now I don't have to worry so much about making ends meet. Wrote a book in 2009, but got scammed by the publisher and never made any Royalties.

Got involved with another scam, in 2005 hoping to learn how to make money on the internet, also another scam. Found out about Self-Publishing and e-books through Kindle, so have no written a book and it is being published.

It is listed on Amazon.com and also on Kindle. "My Very Long Journey Coping With Polio Disability" by John McGee.
