About JHaugland
Joined March 2016
My name is J. Haugland. I am 50-something years old, Norwegian, family man, and I (still) hold a full-time job outside of my online career.

I have been an internet user since 1995 and a user of Bulletin Boards before that. During my professional career I have worked for both smaller and larger companies, mainly within administrative positions and recruiting, and for some time around the turn of the century, I was a part of a team that defined the online presence for the largest Scandinavian temp agency. We had a lot of fun breaking new grounds.

Now I hold a much lower profile job, that gives me less stressful days and time to further explore a long time passion of mine; blogging, Wordpress, and online money making. My job is seasonal so it gives me time to both work and travel in the off-season time.

I have previously set up several websites of my own, ever since the day I memorized all available HTML-codes (in the beginning there were not that many), and hand-coded everything in a text editor.
Nowadays it’s a blast, with Wordpress and pre-defined themes, but still, some understanding of HTML, PHP, and CSS comes in handy, even though it's hardly ever needed.

For the past 14 years, I have also run a small part-time web-design company, helping smaller local businesses setting up a website.

But even though some of my previous and current websites were intended for money-making purposes and some even achieved some success, I never actually got a hang of the total picture until I joined the Wealthy Affiliate community. And I quickly found out that even though I have been doing this for years, I still have a million things to learn.

When I started here I had 4 websites running outside of WA. Three of them are still alive on the outside and are being continuously improved based on what I have learned here. And I have built new websites after I started here, and some are being planned, and they will mostly be hosted within WA.

You will find that I write some blogs in here. Some of the content may differ slightly from what is taught in the WA lessons. If you are new at this and want to learn, pay attention to the lessons and ignore me.
The lessons are the best training available anywhere on the web if you want to learn the basics of building your own business.

Then, read me later when you have enough knowledge to make up your own opinion on what you should do. I am an information seeker that soak up all I information I can on what we do here, and I share my opinion on what I find relevant. When you seek advice in the community, remember that all in here are smart and good people, but some are more experienced than others. So follow the advice that makes sense to you.

I live on the beautiful rainy windy west coast of Norway, and I have my second home in the Philippines where my wife is from, and we try to visit there at least once a year. Together we love to travel, take long unplanned road trips, spend time with friends and family or just relax and do nothing.

If anyone has bothered reading my bio all the way to here, I would appreciate a follow (which of course will be returned). And if I can be of any assistance, just ask. Send me a PM or comment here on my profile. I will do my best to help you out. If I don't answer your PM message right away, I'm probably busy, traveling, sleeping or simply offline. But I will answer eventually, I promise.

I very appreciate you sincerity and offer of help.
I'm only beginning to study this interesting online science. I want to reach success. The online technology is changing quite rapidly, so one must be aware of last advancements in order to be sliding, so to speak, on a wave like surfers do, in a sea of online business.
So, I will surely use your kind proposition in the future.
I wish you all the best. With great pleasure I also would be traveling to Philippines, but it's to earn first.

Thank you for following me, I appreciate it a lot!

I am currently investing a lot of time into web-development techniques as well, learning HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP.

I do still have to complete all the basic training, but I find it quite obvious and/or have already completed the steps myself from time to time... Anyways, I should stop my rambling. Thanks again for the follow!

Wanted to ask you if you've had time to look at my awful looking site? Maybe you can be very critical so I can learn what to do. You can't hurt my feelings at all. I'm asking for it. Would love to get this up and running smoothly.

Hi! Mr. Haugland,
After perusing your profile from the first to the last word, I compel to leave you this note because there are so many things we can and may work closely together to succeed in E-marketing.

Clearly, you are global in viewing the world and resourceful in tech and administrative ability. Look. Your posts have earned many comments and likes which indicate whatever you posted has resonated with the audience. I admire and respect.

To uplift me to follow your footsteps, I would appreciate you take time and effort to peruse www.ebettercare.com and see how you can and may help push it into its supposed orbit of E-marketing sphere.

Again, welcome to networking inside WA. Keep in touch...

Thanks for the follow. Funny, you and my wife have much in common. She, like you, was coding her first websites in HTML back in the early 90's before website designer programs came into play. She helps me a lot with HTML tweaks and come coding changes we need in our website. Like you, we have much more to learn but do find it easier with tools like Wordpress to help us along.

Really enjoy your posts and work. Wishing you much success!

She laughed. The only tool she needed was Notepad and she could crank out a website. Now look at all the tools you have
available. It's hard to tell what you need these days.

She said she wishes she could find one program that does decent tables. If we need tables, I let her build them in the text area - especially the nested kind. It just makes me dizzy!

You two are way above my pay grade, but I can appreciate your skills having learned them from the ground up! :)

Hello JHaugland, I did go through your bio, and here's the follow. But more importantly, I'm going through your blog, and the "About me page" post caught my attention. To be clear, it is where I left my training and went to work on my content.

Frankly, I'm not exactly sure how to sell myself as an expert in a subject I had no career experience in, but I can run circles around the relevant experts that do have that stamp of approval from the established institutions.

If at all possible, I would like to privately share my website with you and explain the road block I am facing. I will be happy to be of service to you should you require any comments and reviews of your blogs.

Thanks for following me. I am following you back. I'm just finishing up my fourth week and started on Course 4. I live in Kansas City, Missouri. It just started to get cold last week. I work the night shift, so when we have inclement weather, I've always got the option of staying the night at the hotel next door.

Just thought I'd drop you a line to thank you for the follow. I'll be following you, too. I've been looking for a way to make money on line for a long time but had no real luck until I landed here. Don't get me wrong, I have made some, but not enough to write home about. I'm glad I landed here at WA. I now feel that this is the place to go to get where I need to be. I have about 2 years to retirement, I believe with some hard work and dedication, as well as a lot of help from this great community, I have the means to retire comfortably. That's all I really need. Anything over that would allow me and my wife to travel. With your experience, I may turn to you for help. Thanks for the offer.

Try it out in Internet Explorer. Did it work? No. Then it's HTML5.

Hi J Haugland. Thank you for following. I'm a bit older than you, just passed my 70th year and still working full time. I live in South Africa, beautiful sunny country. I teach people to buy and sell shares on the stock market, I analyse companies and I manage share portfolios. I have had quite a checkered career. I sold life insurance, I owned two clothing manufacturing factories with 120 people in each, I was an estate agent, I was involved in Horse Racing, I sold Industrial Fire Pumps, I was a Diamond Dealer and travelled all over Africa buying stones. Now I have just joined WA today. It is my intention to make a success of this internet marketing and travel the world. I welcome any help and suggestions that you have to pass on to me. I'm sure your Pearls of wisdom will be of tremendous help. Thank you

Greetings from South Central New Jersey. I don't live on the coast. I am inland, in farm and horse country. Having said that, we are not farmers of any sort, nor do we own any horses. But we are surrounded by people who do. The view out every window of my home is very pleasing.

My favourite spots in PI are Calicoan island Samar, Palawan- Sabang, Camiguin FOR SURE, White water rafting at Cagayan De Oro and Boracay back in the 80's when there were was only one resort on the island. They destroyed Boracay many years ago.
Oh and I forgot to mention Apua Grande near Daet!

Does your wife know about Triskelion (TGP) in PI?
Reply

We have traveled a bit in Mindanao since my wife has close friends there. They are business owners there and we always traveled two cars and had armed guards. Not my usual way of traveling. I have been to Cotabato City and some of the areas that I would not go back to now with the latest development there.

I have not heard her mention or seen any involvement with Triskelion.

All good.

The problem is escalating and hopefully, Duterte can get in their and get the big boys like he has been getting some of the corrupt Mayors dealing Shabu.

I will say 20 years or so ago, I wouldn't go to Davao but now it is so clean and very safe.

I can understand the travelling you described and how it is not your usual way of travelling. Two cars and some armed guards aren't going to help in those situations. Remember this one: While the 58 victims were on their way to file a certificate of candidacy for Esmael Mangudadatu, vice mayor of Buluan town, they were kidnapped and killed.

Money and Politics say no more.

Stay Safe.

Hi JH,

You are so correct in saying a million things to learn. The internet keeps expanding day after day probably minute by minute. It just moves so unbelievably fast.

You have a second home in the Philippines. I was thinking about living in Samar down in Guiuan where there is great surf for 6 months of the year, but Yolanda destroyed that idea along with about 10,000 people. KAWAWA.

Just before Yolanda we were in an earthquake in Cebu right outside the old Sto Nino church where the bell tower fell right behind me. Disaster after disaster. I am sure you know.

Anyways, thank you for following me and I wish you and your family the best in all aspects of life.

Cheers and Mabuhay,

Brad

Mabuhay, and thanks for following back

Samar is great. Too bad Yolanda destroyed so much.
I was in Bohol shortly after the earthquake that also shook Cebu. But we had not arrived in PH yet when it happened.

We spend our time in Visayas region, close to Dumaguete. There are some great diving spots there, Apo Island among others.

And in a few weeks, I will be back there :)

Jorn
Reply
BradBurns Premium
Yes, Dumaguete is a nice spot. I use to ride a motorbike from Bais down to Tanhay then to Dumaguete and back, picking up mud crabs on the way.

When I use to go there from Cebu I would get the bus down and stay overnight at of my get outs of Cebu, Kawasan Falls, then get the bus down to Batu then the ferry across to Negros.

With the earthquake, the actual epicentre was near Tubigon. The church in Tubigon was flattened when we went there.

Lucky the Earthquake wasn't in Manila. There would have been thousands killed. It was bloody scary and at first, I thought I was in a movie. But then it hit home. And for the next week, we got aftershocks around the 5.6 which kept everyone guessing and on edge.

I have been in a few quakes buy nothing like that. 7.2 where the buildings are that old you could hear them cracking and to worry about the electricity above our heads falling plus glass popping out from windows.

To be honest, at one stage during the quake it got to the point where I put our odds lower than 50/50.

Sorry for the long email. It is something I will never forget!

Brad
Reply
JHaugland Premium
An experience like that will never be forgotten.
I have only experienced some 5.x quakes and they were scary enough bud did no big damage.
I have been in Bais a lot. My wife's family is from Bindoy, a bit north of Bais so we drive down to Bais to do most of our shopping.
There are some nice tourist spots around Negros, but many of them are a bit hidden away.

Hi, nice to meet you, and thanks for the follow!

I also recall those earlier days of the internet you describe, and prior...

My first dial-in to a DBBS with some friends was in the 80s! Then things like usenet, MUDs and IRC followed. I recall being one of the first groups in the world to trial the very first web browser (thanks to an enthusiastic uni lecturer). But the WWW was so boring back then - so few pages. Look at it now.

The means of social-networking online have changed so much, as has the character of online culture/s. The ease of point and click UX, and the privatisation of the internet in the 90s, has opened up the online playing field to all sorts of people. Good and bad!

Sometimes I read articles about how the law struggles to keep up with changes in technology. But then sometimes I wonder if it's also just people struggling to keep up, and failing to realise how much has changed in a little period of time, and what that's doing for their relationships, commerce etc. Maybe there's a little bit of Alvin Toffler's 'Future Shock' going on, and we don't even realise it.

Have a great day. :)

Hi, J. Haugland!
Thank you for taking interest in following me. It is nice to know that there are also higher-ranking WAers that see us newbies.
And your wife is Filipina! Nice to know. :)

Your expertise will come in handy to help us put up our businesses, too. Great to meet you!

Thank you for inviting me to follow, Jørn! Much to learn from you!

:) While working?

Godt å finne andre nordmenn her inne.
We'll continue on English from here, so ohters don't think we're conspiring or something. Just nice to meet a fellow Norwegian.
See you around

I see you are a seasoned website designer. I would have love to go to your website, but couldn't find a link. Send it to me and I will sure visit it.
For several years I lived on Taiwan, which as you know is just a jump away from the Philippines. Loved it, as it was more relaxed than Taiwan.
I wish you continuous great success in achieving all your goals!

There should be a link at the bottom right side of the profile, but it seems that sometimes it disappear. I just heard from others that experienced the same issue. But you can find me at starteraffiliate.com . I have just spent the easter redesigning everything. (Btw - I can' see any links at your profile either).
I have only visited the airport in Taiwan. KLM drops by there on the way to Manila and we have to walk one round at the airport before we board the same plane. (This makes the landing fees in Manila smaller. Now it's a local Asian flight - not an intercontinental flight). The Philippines is quite relaxed, except Manila. There is a term called 'filipino time' which means that things get done when they get done :)
Best wishes!

Great site you have!
I tried it out. On Firefox, Chrome an ie Explorer it works well. In Edge there is a small problem on the Home page with the button "YES, show me how this can be done". It's moved to the right. I attached a snippet so you can see what I mean.
Let me know when you solved it.

And thanks for informing me about the mess-up.
I tested on Edge earlier and it was OK, so something must have happened. It happens here as well now.
I will look into it.

Update:
Hopefully, now it's fixed. Have not tested on Firefox yet because I'm currently at a computer without Firefox.
Still no idea why it was rendered wrong in Edge. I did some CSS stuff over Easter, but nothing that should affect that button. That was just about formatting the Click-to-Tweet function.

I fixed it by altering the sections in Divi builder and gave each element its own section instead of all elements lining up in one.
I will dive into Elegant Themes support forum to see if any others have run into the same problem.

But ever since Microsoft launched browsers, they have never played by the rules. Always been trouble designing for those browsers.

Thanks again for informing me. Let me know if there is anything I can do in return.

Actually, there is only 5 places on my side that I have altered the code. And those modifications are only CSS adjustments where the code is supplied by theme support and added within the admin module of the theme.
All other modifications are done using the possibilities already embedded within the theme and its admin module.

Hi Mr. Haugland,

First and foremost thanks to your great land of Norway for providing Manchester United a great Gift from Molde in the name of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, the Baby-Faced Assasin in front goal.

(Well, in football world I'm the lifelong fan of Man Utd & Ole Solksjaer made me tears in joy when he put the ball in the back of the Germans net back in 99')

Also, I'm taking a look at your recent advice before and find it providing a good deal of value and quality.

Sir, all the best for you in 2017 WA journey!
Reply
JHaugland Premium
Thanks :) I don't follow football too much but the achievements of Solskjaer has not gone unnoticed :)
I am quite happy with the product in question. I started using it after it was chosen by the company I worked in back then to cover users in branch offices all over Scandinavia.
And after that, it has been with me. With that type of software, if you hardly ever notice it's there, it is probably working. I am not the guy visiting the dark backyards of the internet or clicking links in emails without taking a second look, so I am not really exposing myself to too many threats. But from time to time I get a notice that something was found and deleted or quarantined.
All the best to you as well for 2017 and beyond.

Pleasure to meet you. Thank you so kindly for following me. I am now following you as well. I chuckled when I read your profile because I too had to memorize HTML code when I started because there was only that and notepad to save it too. Now, you can create a website without knowing anything about HTML. Although, I discovered as I am sure you have, that it helps sometimes to know code.

With your experience in hand and a strong desire to make this work, you will have what it takes. My best advice to you is to never give up. If this is the life style you desire, than go for it and don't let anything stop you.

Humbled to followed herein and honored to follow back Sir. I have a ways to go but have come quite a way thus far as well. Finding WA to be much more 'user friendly' than places I've been, people I've exchanged with, and money I've spent.
Not one to give up or give in I'm firm on the idea of completing and ranking my site(s). Too many people suffer from health debilitating illness that can be identified, corralled, and turned around without medications that further hinder progress. I hope to be a small cog in the wheel of turning that ideal around.
My site is a work-in-progress but feel free to visit and peruse the pages I've completed and even those in need of finishing and editing. I think I'm on the right track to good rankings in Google but have yet to be indexed.
A real pleasure to meet you and I look forward to learning a few tips along the way, and perhaps even divveying out a few of my own. Be Well, Be Safe, & Be YOU!

Earnestly, DJ
