A Very Important Message For ALL Beginners!

Last Update: November 14, 2018

People ask me all the time...

Jerry, how long does it take to make money?💰

Why am I not getting any traffic & sales?😫

Or even worse, I've seen many people saying things like...

  • I'm all in. I'll do whatever it takes to make it happen. BUT I really need to see some sales coming in by the end of the first month.
  • I'll put in more time and effort until I see some results and sales.
  • Can I start making money in the first month? Because I need to pay my bills...

If you're asking any of those questions and having similar mindsets, this post is not just FOR YOU. But you HAVE TO & MUST read this post in FULL.

I'm dead serious.

Because I can guarantee you that you'll definitely fail & quit if you're hanging on to those mindsets and asking the wrong questions!

By the way, there's nothing wrong with you having those mindsets now because that's where we all started.

But in order to start making consistent income from your online business and succeed, the first thing we need to work on is having the right mentality🧠

Please DO NOT feel offended or have any negative feelings when you're reading this post.

The purpose of this post is to help you see the REALITY and understand what you should EXPECT!

The Reality That You MUST Understand

I'm sure most of you know that Wealthy Affiliate is NOT a 'get rich quick scheme'. But do you really understand what does it mean by "Get Rich Quick"?

Despite we all know this isn't a get rich quick scheme, there are still many people "hoping" to start seeing results and making money within a month or two.

Why?

  1. They think get rich quick means something like winning a lottery. That's why if they're willing to put in the work for a month or two, they think they should get paid and it's not considered as get rich quick. They simply want to see some results to prove that this works.
  2. MONEY. DEBT. BILLS. Many people need to constantly worry about how to pay their next bill or even pay their next month's WA Premium Membership. I understand. If you're one of them, please continue reading and keep my advice for you in mind.

So, what's the reality I need to know?

Understand this...

👉It's IMPOSSIBLE for you to build up an online business that provides you a stable income source within a few months time if you're new to this.👈

Let me ask you, what's one of the talents you have right now? Anything that you're good at.

And then reflect...how long did it take for you to be good at it? 1 year? 2 years? 5 years?

Making money online is no different.

Many people think that "online business" or the "Internet" has some sort of magic power or some secrets. And peolpe who are successful definitely know certain "secrets" that they don't know about yet. As long as you can get the "secrets", you'll be able to make money and succeed.

That's why there are so many people looking for what we called the "shiny objects", constantly searching for other people's "secret" that they "think" others possess.

Let me tell you...

There are NO SECRETS🙅🏻‍♂️

No matter which business you're building and which platform you're using (be it affiliate marketing, dropshipping, Amazon FBA, YouTube, network marketing, etc.), you just have to:

  • Follow a proven system
  • Keep learning
  • And most importantly, TAKE CONSISTENT ACTION for a LONG PERIOD OF TIME!

It applies to almost ALL businesses, platforms and systems out there, not just Wealthy Affiliate.

How did Michael Jordan succeed? Practice, fail, practice, fail, practice, fail...

For any successful people that you can think of, they succeed because they focus on ONE THING and keep doing it every single day no matter what happened.

And the good news for you is that I AM A LIVING PROOF that Wealthy Affiliate works!

Just take a look at my income growth since Jan 2018:

Can you see how CONSISTENCY & PATIENCE don't just pay off but they pay off huge?

But this graph is just a tip of an iceberg.

What all of you don't see is the amount of time every single day I put into learning, writing, doubting, hesitating, failing, growing, improving...

And by the way, you can see that I started making some money since January, February and March 2018, despite it's very little.

But prior to this, I spent 2 YEARS learning as much as I could from the community, all the training and the successful members here while I was serving full time national service.

That's how I can enjoy the fruit right now and share the results with you guys.

So, I know many of you will start to think...

"Maybe Wealthy Affiliate is not for me because what I need right now is money. I need to survive, support my family, to pay my bills, etc. Maybe WA is not for me at this moment. I'll come back next time."

Some of you may say, "I simply don't have the patience to wait that long..."

I totally understand.

I can tell you what you need to do right now. But quitting Wealthy Affiliate is NOT the solution to your problem.

Many beginners have problems paying your Wealthy Affiliate Premium Membership I know.

Here's What You Should Do Right Now!

If you're having problem paying your WA Membership, you MUST either have a full-time or a part-time job that you can earn a stable active income.

You need to support yourself and your family while building your passive income online.

Treat Wealthy Affiliate as a side hustle for now but never lose hope on it and never give up.

If you give up on this, for most people, they're forced to keep working on an active income job to put food on the table.

👉Without passive income, you'll never stop trading time for money.👈

Warren Buffett put it best...

So the lesson to takeaway is...

👉You need to have an active income job to support you while you hustle on your passive income until the day when your side hustle can become a full-time commitment.👈

And that's when you can go tell your boss that...

By the way, if unfortunately for some reason you're someone who's not able to get a proper job or work outside from your home, I'm sure there are tons of ways to make active income online by doing freelance jobs or helping clients based on your expertise.

And for those of you who already have a full-time job, the amount of time you can put into your side hustle is limited. That's why you need even more patience to make this work.

But as long as you can consistently put in let say 3 hours per day for the next 1 year, 2 years, 3 years...I can guarantee you that you'll see results and you can definitely quit your job sometime along that journey.

Another quote I must share with you is this...

“You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” - Steve Jobs

Poor people think for days and months. Rich peolpe think for years, decades and even generations.

The time and effort you put into your online business right now may seem nothing or even wasted for many people when they can't see results at the moment.

But you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future and you can only realize that when you're looking backward at your own journey, just like what Steve Jobs has said.

Wise words, aren't they?

One Thing I've Never Shared With Anybody is this...

If you take a look at the income growth chart I provided you earlier on, you'll see that before May 2018, I was earning less than $1000/month from my online business here.

Just like what I explained earlier on, during that time, I was working on a local part-time job at a hotel buffet...

Yea, that was me, just a couple of months ago.

I even brought my laptop to work so that I can fully utilize the resting time I had to work on my business👨🏻‍💻

Can you see how much effort I have been putting in to achieve the results I'm getting?

If you are struggling for time, it's all about time management and prioritization⏱

If you're struggling for money, get a stable job, either part-time or full-time based on your need and plan your schedule to work on your side hustle.

Everything I've written in this post are my honest opinion and advice from the bottom of my heart❤️

I really want to help you. But please remember that your results depend on YOU. No one else.

How eager & desired are you to achieve the goals you have?

If your desire and your WHY is huge enough, you'll squeeze out that extra time, put in that extra effort no matter what's the circumstance, just like what I did when I was working at the buffet restaurant.

Final Reminder

There will definitely be times when you encounter failures & struggles along the way😣

  • You may be struggling to build your first website because you're new to WordPress.
  • You may struggle to decide on your niche.
  • You may struggle to get traffic to your site.
  • You may struggle to make your first sale.
  • Your first site may even be a total failure.

So what?!

These are all part of the learning curve and the journey. Remember that we can only connect the dots looking backward?

The good thing is that you're in Wealthy Affiliate, a very established, active and helpful community👥

Everything you need to get started is provided here. All the training, tools, resources, support, etc...

So, it's really up to you. You are responsible for your own results.

Remember!

You'll never fail until you give up👊

Your time is never wasted because what you gained are the valuable experience.

To end off this post, I just want to provide you with some of the most useful resources for you at this stage:

  1. How Long Does it take to Make Money at Wealthy Affiliate?
  2. Are You Willing to Work for FREE? (The Secret to Success in Anything!)
  3. A Niche is A Group of People Looking for Stuff
  4. Google Page 1 Ranking Tips: Position 4 in 3 Minutes!

Lastly, I believe this post is helpful for A LOT OF the members here. So, whenever you come across someone who's struggling or being pessimistic, remember to share this post with them to help them🗣

If you're promoting Wealthy Affiliate, this is a great post that's worth sharing with your referrals to encourage them so that they can stay longer in the community. This means more recurring income for you as well!💰💰

But I recommend you to share this with your referrals only after around 2 weeks to a month after they join. Because the best strategy is to get them pumped up about this online business in the beginning. And then along the way, we help them get the right mindset to succeed.

If you share this with your referrals too early, some will just quit after seeing the amount of time and effort needed. So it's best to get them pumped up first in the beginning.

You can add this to one of your auto-messages that's being sent to your referrals:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/share/messages

"Premium for 15 or 30 days" is what I recommend. That's the best time to teach them about the mindset stuff.

Hi, Jerry. Thank you for the honest yet at the same time encouraging words from the heart. It was a good reminder, though I read similar things before, somehow, sometime, somewhere.

My inquiry to you is this: did you upgrade to premium in the first month? and do you recommend upgrading at the first month to someone struggling to make ends meet, who has just begun with working for monthly income?

Appreciate your time reading. Looking forward to your honest and insightful reply.

hi Jason -- everyone of course needs to make their own best choices and decisions as building a successful on-line biz requires one's own time & effort ...

with respect to WA membership -- there are a number of ways to make that happen for yourself --whether monthly, yearly Premium, special BF that just happened Nov-23-26 (for next year then) and now a new 6-month special.... several options available to you ...advise you to check them all out to see what suits you best....

ultimately, it's a personal choice & decision that only really you can make ...

hope this answer helps you a wee bit while you consider things and encourage you to keep moving forward and onward with your training to success... all the best, cheerio ... 😊

My God, I can't believe you are only 21, you have a super attitude in life and business and I admire you and the results you have achieved.

I have a busy full time career and 4 busy young kids so I try to manage 2 hours per day to build out my sites.

I have not promoted WA yet as I fear I cannot compete with people promoting WA full time but your recent success is making me think twice...

One question if that's ok - what in your opinion was the biggest key in your success?
Is it pumping out 100's of reviews? Or
Is it creating a large email list? Or is there something else?

With the limited time I have, I would really like to hear your opinion on lets say the top 2 or 3 things that are needed to be the key for success
Thanks

Thanks Paul!

I think the most important thing is to put up more in-depth and high ranking posts/reviews to get consistent free traffic.

With that consistent traffic coming from Google, you can then build up your Email list.

So the first thing is definitely drive traffic to your site through content creation.

Wow very inspirational! I came in with the mindset of taking my time and patience. I know that nothing happens over night. Yes you should have a job while building your business. Yes treating this as a side hustle is the best way to look at this. Just imagining a few years or even months from now BOOM fire happens 👏

Great blog. You have just reinforced that his is not a get rich scheme which I all ready realised. I can see that this is a long hall project and if you fall off the horse get backup. If I got this right you said you but a couple of years learning the ropes which I am trying to emulate. Thanks for your reinforcement of what I believed. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jerry - A fantastic post! I agree with you. It takes dedication and commitment. This is something that I am learning as well as you do see a return on your efforts eventually. The harder you push then the more the return.

I think its important that one genuine believes and enjoys what they are doing and not just for the sake of the money.

Your graph above is very impressive and awesome that you starting earning something even at the beginning.

How many posts did you publish each week for the first few months?

But if you've read through clearly, I didn't start making some money in the beginning. It took me 2 years of learning before that.

Great post Jerry! This online business requires commitment and time to grow before seeing any results. I've also found other ways to make money online in Wonder research and learned about being a Google rater through Appen. I'm also pursuing flipping products on ebay as a side hustle to make money to re-invest in ads later on. Gary V is a genius and I hope to make that a hobby like he has.

Thanks Jerry, I agree with you in everything you wrote. It seems to me that the central point of persisting in this business is to have faith that you can realize what is now only in your mind, but for that to happen it is necessary to put the work and have patience because it does not happen magically.

truly inspiring for the individuals who want that "quick money". It reminds me of people telling me I'm wasting my time doing things like this and there spending $20+ a week playing the lottery spending $80+ a month and not wanting to learn something here and start earning in the future. People's mindsets are strange I guess, then again before I changed mine all I thought about was how I was going to score my next hit.

They're not strange. They just need to be enlightened and inspired. This shows the potential of the market you can promote to. There are a lot more people for us to help and in that process we could make good money :)

Thank you Jerry for writing this post! It is a good reminder for myself to keep moving forward working on my website and not quitting. I am fortunate in that I have a full time job that provides steady income, so "making money quick" is not a priority. However, my problem is time management--how to fit in working in WA with everything else. I like your suggestion of giving 3 hours/day towards WA and will try it. I also will attach your post to some of my referrals who have not been active with the hope that this is just the message they need to hear for motivation to get started.

Great Post Jerry. I've reached the stage where I'm over worrying about the income side of the equation. I came to Wealthy Affiliate to build a website on my favorites niche and I made the decision this week that I will be focusing on that Niche from now on. No more checking out my rankings, no more spending my spare hours on the WA forum. I work 10 hours a day on my own business. The one that supports my family and me, so the time I have left in the day is precious and I want to spend it doing the one thing I enjoy the most, writing about my favorites topic. That doesn't mean I won't help others here or write blogs etc. It just means I'll do less of it. As for promoting WA, I may do it down the track, at the moment I simply don't feel like doing it. Jim

I love this! Thank you for posting this, I knew it wasn't going to happen quickly.

What I deal with is convincing my fiance' that this is a legitimate business model and people make money doing it.

I think she was hoping for a "get rich quick" program. Lord knows I have had my share of those...Ish!

Nope I know in my heart of hearts that WA is the real deal!

And yes some days because of my job I am not able to put in as much time as I would like to.

I know that what I do put in is time well spent and keeps adding cement a little at a time to secure that foundation.

Yes passive income is what I am after and I know that if I keep at it learning as I go and implementing what I learn, little by little I will get there!!

Thanks again for such a great and inspiring post!!

Everything takes time. In some ways, you have to think of it as starting out at a traditional job. You're not going to become CEO of a company in 2 weeks or 2 months after being hired on at a starting position. It takes time to work your way up and it is similar to your own business as it's going to take time to build everything up so that you can be successful later on down the road.

I certainly understand the need for needing extra income now so I'm doing a side hustle where I deliver food and it has started helping ease the need a little bit for extra income that way I can build up my websites here to where they will eventually produce income for me in the long term.

"If you want to be a doctor, you first have to learn to become a doctor.'
"if you want to be a Lawyer, you first have to learn to become a Lawyer.'

Even then your success is tantamount only to the effort you put forth through your newly learned practice.

Why should it be any different with Internet and Affiliate Marketing.

First 'Learn' and then remove the 'L'. It will come soon enough.

Well Said Jerry,

Let's say that you have a chance to make $1,000.00 and all you have to do is hit a home run from a ball delivered by a Major League Baseball Pitcher.

Do you think you are going to walk up to the plate and hit it out of the park on your first try.

Let's take a look at the professional baseball player. In 2017 out of 30 teams the average number of home runs was 1.26. What this tells us is that the majority of trained major league players never hit a home run.

But we all know that great players who practiced at hitting home runs and became very successful didn't do it overnight. They practiced for years. Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, and Babe Ruth all hit over 700 career home runs.

So could YOU hit a homerun. Most likely not on the first day, first month, or maybe not even the first year. But it is possible and the more you practice hitting the more likely it is that you will hit it out of the park.

Thank You Jerry for this reminder that it takes work and time to build a real business.

Trust me there are no get rich quick programs. They all require work and most of them don't offer the support and help you will get right here.

So how much time did you spend working at the Buffett every week? How many hours a day? In addition to the hours you spent on your site?!

Folks tend to look at online business as something other than a job. Where you show up everyday on a schedule. Committed to your days work. To get the job done for the day. And then show up the next day to do it all over again.

Perhaps an online business doesn’t feel like a job because it does not have an instant payout.

But the way you explained connecting the dots of the past so they eventually connect in the future is brilliant! Love the quotes. And you are living proof along with Jimmy Buffett and Steve Jobs.

For another great read, check out Linda’s post about front loading the work. Has great info on how to plan to connect those future dots! Thanks for helpful reminders, motivations and tips Jerry!

This platform is definitely the most user friendly and comprehensive I've found, but like you said, the results are still up to me...

Thank you for the absolutely fantastic blog post-Jerry, I'm sure that this will encourage many people, especially people just starting out. I've had people ask me exactly the same type of questions, "I need to start to earn money instantly, otherwise, it's just a waste of time"! Unfortunately, Internet marketing does not work like this, it takes time, work and dedication to start an online business.

I remember before my first moneymaking website went live back in 2007, my Webmaster built the backend of the website which enabled me to keep adding content, I was spending every spare minute adding and writing content to my website. Thankfully when we went live my hard work paid off, I made a sale in the first 24 hours. The main point is that I had to put a lot of effort in before I saw anything happen.

I couldn't agree with you more Jerry about having a part-time job or even a full-time job, you have to have money coming in to pay the bills. You can't just leave your job to become a full-time Internet marketer unless you already have money behind you. Everything takes time, the most successful Internet marketers that I see demonstrate consistency and I believe this is one of the major keys to success.

Have a great day Jerry.

hi Jerry,
These are all good factors to consider. I've been in most of those situations but I never quit. That's because I know that if someone can make money online, I can do the same. Even Michael Jordan had to work hard around the clock to improve his game. It was his dedication that made him a legend.

Hi Jerry, great post. I agree that you have to put in the effort, time and patience to reap the rewards in the future. I have been building websites as a side hustle and will use that income to pay for a yearly subscription to WA at the BF sale. As you mention, there are many ways to earn extra money to pay for WA membership. Freelancing, garage sale, eBay, Etsy.... the list is limitless. Check out Side Hustle School if you don't believe me!!

Now in my eighth month at WA I have stopped looking for the shiny objects and settled down to writing consistently. I know one day my site will start making money, and I will eventually be in a position to give up my 9-5.

Yup, I'd say this is true. I've been here for one year (12 months), and I haven't seen any money yet. I was certainly discouraged when my year was up and I wasn't any further ahead than when I started. I became very depressed, but all you can do is pick yourself up and keep going. It ain't easy, but it's either that or just stop trying to achieve, and that's like being dead, so it doesn't pass muster in my books. However, I've learned an important virtue: patience. You just have to keep chipping away, a little bit at a time, or taking large chunks if you can, but by all means be good to yourself, and I figure the rest will come. That's how it works, as far as I know. Anyway, I've got no choice. Sometimes, being up against it like that, you can't fail because you have no choice.

Regardless, I feel I have moved ahead, even if the money ain't there yet. It will be, I believe in myself. And even if my website "fails," I'll never see it as a failure because I've learned so much!

The truth is most people who are new to making money online doesn't really know it takes until they've been through the mud, it's the ones who come out the other side I admire.

If you ask me I'd rather network with someone with a little mud on their hands, "figuratively speaking".

Then again that's why this community and the training here is so brilliant, people learn what it really takes to be success at their venture of choice, and in time they're better for it.

The ones who can't stick it out didn't have what it takes to begin with.

I guess there is a host of skills that will need development to reach the potential of making money. What you have pointed out is a reality check and we need these reminders to keep being motivated to put in the work that is required to succeed though easier said than done.

We need trailblazers like you to show that it can be done - just takes hard work and patience. keep up the good work.

So great to know an approx time to expect results I have just quit Real estate with no financial reserves. Looks like I will be working from home or have a job. Since I am no spring chicken I probably will not be able to put in 3 hours a day. So mine will certainly be a long term goal . Longer than I thought. But it helps so as not to get discouraged when it takes longer to get going than hoped for.

This is an awesome post. Everyone always comes into the live chat and asks after a few days, or even minutes/hours of making their website and starting their WA account why they're not making money.

And I always have to tell them that nothing is instant, we need to work hard and put in the dedication and effort for long periods of time to start seeing results and progress.

Just like in the real world, practice makes perfect. Or take going to the gym, you don't see anything if you don't properly work for long periods of time.

Or they don't ask why they're making money, but after first starting their account, they ask "if they can make money." And we always have to tell them, if you put in the work and effort, you'll make more than enough to meet your goals.

Jerry, thank you for this great post.

You are so right in reminding us all to be patient, work hard, learn our craft and then expect results.

In fact, I was saying the similar only the other day to a friend (who is very impatient on my behalf) to start making (lots) of money.

But, what people don't realize that this is a profession just like any other and needs time to be understood and mastered. Eight months ago I had no idea affiliate marketing existed. It's crazy to expect to be making huge amounts of money immediately.

I am an opera singer and have been learning singing for twenty-five years now. I still learn something new every single day and don't think this will ever stop.

Same with internet marketing (or any other profession).

Learning something new every day, working diligently every day will get results. Taking massive action, and then some!

Wishing you all the best with your projects and the new course!

Thanks for this, things I already know but a huge reminder.
Prioritization and orgainization are things I need to remedy.
I do know I work hard so I have that under my belt, but then
there is consistency too - when I think things aren't doing so well.

Awesome "secrets" you share today.
And funny thing is, we all know what these secrets are.
Well done on all your successes Jerry.

You hit the nail right on the head Jerry.

This post is applicable to everyone here.

Very inspiring!

I'm still working full-time, and (like you used to do), I use my breaks to work on my business.

I actually purchased a Chromebook sometime ago just so I can work on the go - not quite there yet with a Mac Pro but will get there soon! 😉

So, full-time workers, just to re-iterate what Jerry has said, bring your laptops to work - (or buy a cheap Chromebook) you'd be surprised how much you can do in the space of an hour (if you prepare things in advanced).

Once again Jerry, thanks for the inspiration!👍👍

Thank you for sharing your insights, Jerry. I heard something said by Anthony Robbins once that I think relates to what you've just shared. I don't recall the exact quote, but paraphrasing, he said,

'Most people overestimate what they can do in a day and underestimate what they can do in a year.'

It resonated with me and has stuck with me ever since. Whenever I feel like I'm not making enough progress in some area, I look back to a year ago, and I see the amount of progress I've actually made, which is always substantial if I've put in any amount of consistent effort - even if it's only 20 minutes/day. It may take me longer than someone putting in 3 hours/day, but I'm still moving forward. That's encouraging, and it helps me focus on one step at a time and on what I have and CAN do, not on what I don't have and CAN'T do.

While seeing highly successful results of others can show potential and possibility, it really doesn't have any direct bearing on the reality of my own progress and results. There are never guarantees for success, even if you do everything "right." What is certain is if you don't put in the effort, if you don't keep working on moving forward, you definitely won't get anywhere. Anything else is just wishful thinking.

I like to compare it to spending years in school and tens of thousands of dollars just to come out and (hopefully) land an entry level job.

Just a little note to whoever may read this comment.
Jerry is one hell of a guy.

I have asked for his help on many occasions and he has always been there.
Even though he has MANY referrals, he is still genuine and never turns his back on someone in need of assistance.

So when you read this, don't look at it like he is blowing smoke up your A$$, he is telling you this to help you to not give up so that you can reach your level of success.

Thank you Jerry.
Sometimes this is just what we need. A positive reality check.

You have given is encouragement as well as inspiration.
I will be sharing this with future referrals.

Just a side note. There are some members here that aren't able to work outside of their home for reasons other than just not wanting to.

If our spouses are the only ones bringing in the income, some of us can't take from that income to pay for the membership.

I am one of those individuals. BUT, I can tell you that I am doing as much as I can to stay here at Wealthy Affiliate.

I am not successful YET, but I know my time will come because I not only believe in Wealthy Affiliate and it's training, but I believe in members like you AND myself.

I built my website with individuals like myself in mind, I won't give up on that.

Thank you for all that you do for others.
