A Niche is A Group of People Looking for Stuff

Many folks are confused about the term “niche” and they read into it too much. Because of this, I want to simplify the term niche.

A niche is simply a GROUP of PEOPLE

These people are interested in something, but something specific. The key when choosing this group of people is to be very specific because if you are are too broad, then it is going to be difficult to talk to your audience.

It is like someone walking into a supermarket looking for advice on “how to improve their metabolism”. It is not going to happen and you are not likely to trust the source of the information. Definitely not like the experience you would get if you walked into a store that specialized in metabolism.

Within the online world there are 3.75 BILLION people. That is the biggest marketplace in the world by a long shot so you want to really become an expert within the very specific category you choose.

So, when you sit down and are thinking of what your niche is, think not of this imaginary and confusing word “niche”, think instead of a group of people.

But you don’t want this group to be too broad. That is the worst thing you can do when starting out. I want to give you some examples of a niche that is too broad and then I want to give you some examples of groups of people that are much more "niche" and specific.

A group of people interested in health. Not the best (TOO BROAD).

Health could be just about anything. I constantly see folks at WA trying to start off within the health niche. Well "health" isn't a niche, it's very broad. How do you target people within health? That is not an audience that you can effectively target, rather you need to dig down and get more specific.

A group of people looking to improve their metabolism. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of people over 50 years old looking to lose weight. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of people looking to fix their back problems. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of men that are looking for help for hair loss. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to for this type of help.

A group of people that are looking for low carb diets. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

See where I am going with this? People are not looking for health, they are looking for something much more specific. There are 10,000’s of niches within the broad "health" industry. Tens of thousands of groups looking to accomplish something, looking to buy something, looking for help solving a problem.

All you need to do is target one of these and you have yourself a niche and a very big group of people.

Let’s look at another example...

A group of people interested in babies. Not the best (TOO BROAD).

People interested in “babies” is going to be very difficult to target because it is far too broad. People don’t open Google and search for “babies” online, they search for things that are much more specific.

A group of people looking for organic baby products. That is a targeted niche (but still a little broad).

A group of people looking for organic cloth diapers. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to for these.

A group of people looking for stimulation toys for infants. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for learning apps for babies. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for jogging strollers. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for cribs and information about cribs. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for this.

A group of people looking for classic children's books. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for information about colic babies. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for help.

A group of people looking for information on how to treat babies that are sick. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for help on this.

See how I am narrowing things down to a much more specific group of people? Sure, these are targeted but they are still massive. Millions of people are looking for information, for help, and ultimately are spending billions of dollars online buying things throughout the course of a year and you are going to be able to capitalize on this with your website.

Massive opportunity resides just about everywhere you look within the online world because there are specific groups of people everywhere (also known as niches)

But What About the Niche Competition? Shouldn’t I Be Concerned?

No...No….and NO!

Within each of these more targeted groups of people, there are 1,000’s (sometimes millions) of low competition keywords you can target. What you are learning here at WA also gives you a huge competitive advantage over your competition and is going to help you capitalize on any niche.

And please do remember, there is a reason there are a million of every type of store in the world. There are a million hardware stores. There are a million baby toy shops. Millions of people are buying stuff in the smallest of categories.

To put this into perspective, there are 4 million babies born in the US alone each and every year. That means there are 4 million mom’s and dad’s online looking for information about their new babies, looking for help, looking to buy products or services...and this is where you step in with your niche website.

This could be for organic cloth baby diapers or for information on colic babies...or anything that targets a specific group of people.

I don’t want to blow your mind too much here, but there are 120 million babies born every year globally so the audience that is online and looking for stuff within this niche is much larger than the 4 million people in the US.

Crazy right?

Now, when you go to choose your niche, dig into it a bit and find a more specific group of people. Recognize that there are MILLIONS of people within every niche you can imagine and that is the beautiful part about this Internet “thing”. It is not going anywhere and as every year goes by, there is opportunity absolutely everywhere you look and it only continues to grow.

Now go out there and find your GROUP OF PEOPLE. If you want any help in regards to this or want to get feedback on your ideas for a niche, drop a comment below and we will be more than happy to help you out.

PS. If you still can’t come up with a niche after this and want one that is “chosen” for you already, go through the Affiliate Bootcamp. I would like to delve into a variety of niches. For example, I love food from different parts of the world, sports, trivia games, young adult adventure novels (I'm 46, is that weird?), politics, religion and family life.

What I'm hearing is to dig further into the subject areas and find SPECIFIC topics to promote on the site. How fine do I need to go before it's a viable niche?

Pick the Niche that you are most comfortable with, most knowledgeable about and love talking about......

Then narrow it down, for example:
If its mountain climbing, you would narrow it down to a market within mountain climbing like... best foot ware or clothing or maybe the best mountain you experienced etc....you get what I mean. Then, when your website is up and running you can review and promote related products - Amazon is a good place to start.

Hope this helps.

This is my question...
My husband is an incredible Master Goldsmith and for 20+ years we owned a jewelry store, so Custom Designed rings would be right up my alley, however my heart and interest would be with helping 3 of my youngest 7 children improve their focus (they tend to be in the ADHD area of attention issues) so I would love that to be my niche. But I don't understand how I could that produce an income that could keep me home with them having "Focus issues" be my niche?

Perhaps there are different study systems or focusing tools designed for kids with adhd?

thanks for the suggestion!

There are many ways you can optimize that type of blog.
1. Books about the subject.
2. Games/toys to help children improve their attention skills
3. Etsy.com has a huge assortment of items for ADHD, like weighted blankets, training items and support items.
4. Kids clothing
5. Hotels appropriate for travel

I've seen other blogs sharing experiences about this condition, and they can be very successful.

I planned to have my niche be crafts... but now that itself seems to broad. I do sooooooooo many crafts though, and am not sure how to narrow it down when I do so many. Maybe I should try a different niche. I also like the home parties (like tupperware, scentsy, partylite, etc... well, I like buying from them, not necessarily having the parties), but don't know how to narrow that down either. Guess I'm good at picking broad categories, not so much narrowing down!

Hey Kimberly,

See if reading the following helps you with your niche issue:

Blogs are crafts are very popular! I know many affiliates who are making a lot of money from them. Now the newest merchant I know of is EtsyStudio.com, which actually sells craft kits. They are part of Etsy.com, so they have that great name too. If you are that creative that you can teach crafts, you can have a loyal following.

Great post! This pretty much clears up what a niche is. I was a little unsure but know there is no doubt. Now I need to find me a niche. I enjoy traveling but my favorite hobby is hunting small game with PCP air rifles. I also enjoy photography and am also good at training dogs. But I am unsure of which route I want to go. I think I might have a look at the Affiliate Bootcamp Model.

Thanks for the info

Hey Ed,

You might want to give this article a quick read before you jump into bootcamp. Cheers,

Peter

Thank you.

No worries. I hope that helps you clear up which direction you're going to take. Best of luck!!

Now, I absolutely MUST admit... I've NEVER seen a more simplistic approach to understanding Niche! I'd Never gotten until NOW! I mean the light bulb(s) just started going off and suddenly I could clearly see everything I was doing wrong with my ad targeting before. WOW, Simply put, I hadn't really chosen a "Niche"
I'm so thankful for this lesson and it was so thorough yet very concise... I don't have ANY questions AT ALL

Great post! I have many thoughts racing in my mind and I am compiling a list in order to weed out those ideas that might be less lucrative in light of the new things I am learning about the subject.
Would the idea of helping teens find methods of making money online be a niche to consider?

you might want to find out what age teenagers are legally allowed to start earning money.

Great advise! Thanks!!
Sincerely,
Curtis

Hi Lodge
My recent learning has been that persons below the age of 25 are less likely to buy online using a credit card. I appreciate that many teenagers have disposable income, but would be concerned to know that they have the means to pay by credit card before deciding on an offer. I guess it would depend on the price level of the offer as well, viz affordability? I don't know if other members already have experience selling to this age group? Best Alan

Great point and insght Alan, Thank you very much!!
My thought was to have a website giving young people ideas to make money with age appropriate content and recommendations. Of course all under the guidance of parents and with they're parents partnership.
Thanks for the feedback and advice, it means a lot!
Sincerely,
Curtis

Teens, especially fatherless boys, need help in areas like this. So I support you in following your heart's passion to help these youngsters (boys and girls).

Great! Thanks Allan for your input, It means a lot!

Great article. I have a lot of ideas for several niches. Some may be a little large and more complicated. Just have to get it down to what I would like the first one to be and go from there. Thank you for this helpful tool to help do that.

I'm passionate in fitness world, supplements(like protein powders, Multi vitamins and pre-workouts which are healthier), part time jobs, doing business vs job, opportunities for unemployed people but I came to know when we are new we have to select a very small niche to earn fast. I don't want to wait so long to earn money by selecting heavy competition niche,I'm stuck here so please suggest me something Thank you

You could try working out and work out supplements that is a big topic. Your subtopics could be what you were talking about up above such as vitamins and protein powders,
You just have to pick a topic and put your heart into it. Passion shows when you work hard at it.

Hope that helps!

Hi Naveen.

You are always best to choose a main niche, like your example of "supplements". So your main niche could be "Supplements for health and fitness". And then you will have lots of smaller niche areas that you will target as sub-niches. Using your example above, a great keyword that you could target is "best supplement for pre workout". This keyword alone has very low competition but gets 32 searches per month. Now you might think that 32 searches isn't much, but when you have lots of articles all targeting different sub-niches, those numbers will really start to add up!

Hope that helps.

Andrew

Thanks Missey, productive idea! Will work on it, Thank you so much

Love you Andrew, I will work on this. Thank you

Thanks Naveen!

Thanks, Kyle, this was really helpful. I have an idea now: Target audience: people interested in sensory toys for children with special needs. I can narrow it down further: sensory toys for children with autism. As I am passionate about children with special needs, this will give me much to write about as well. I'm very excited now!

That's a great that you are passionate about your niche, it will make it much easier to come up with good content. I believe your intentions are good and I think you will help a lot of kids and their families. Keep up the good work and best of luck to you!

Great article! I've been trying to niche down for months, but I can't seem to find the right words to describe my group of people, though I know who they are as I have them on my email list :-) So let me explain who they are and see if someone can help.

My whole life has been about living courageously and living a life I felt called to. So I get excited when I awaken that in other women and challenge them to go after their dreams and put themselves out there, and I have a lot of testimonials to prove this.

I also have the skills I've picked along the way that empower them, eg brand building, social networking effectively, photography - so a few skills here. I don't just talk about making changes, but I show how.

Now what is this called? I can't seem to find an appropriate keyword, any help appreciated.

Entrepreneur , can also be networking. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your response @DorianDaRock, but the people are not necessarily entrepreneurs, in fact, most work for someone else?

Continue showing or motivating them into becoming entrepreneurs. What they lack, you fill in the gaps. This can be a niche for you. Motivational speaker, life coach. Ponder on that.

Interesting, I have been running away from this for a while, guess it's time to own it. I appreciate you chiming in Dorian.

Hi FifyL, from the way that you described your gifts put you in the category of life coaching. So, here's my suggestion.

You are the brand. So, why not use your name for your first domain name. Or you could do something like this...DoingLifewell.com or DoingLifeWithPurpose.com. You could also do something like DoingLifeWith(yourname).com.

I hope this helps you, and I would really love to know how things are going with you.

Stay focused and be blessed.

Felton T.

@FeltonT I guess that's it then, I've just been trying to move away from a business that would require me to be present in order to make an income, if that makes sense.

But I guess that's why I've been stuck. I do have a domain in my name so I'll use it.

Thank you, I'll kee you posted.

First thought which comes to mind is Empowearing Women. You have your niche figured out for sure. ..phrasing it will be clearer soon enough. All the best!

@JMankanda thank you for your input, it is the phrasing that I need to figure out, and the 'how'.

You are a motivational speaker. I feel as though you should make a site about life motivation and how to pursue that. Life, Love and Wonder these are what people need to get things done.

Hope this helps!

Bee well!

Thank you @Missey, I've done some talking and even though I don't enjoy it, I'm effective at it.

It helps for sure, thanks!
