Writing content on your own site is definitely the main priority but sometimes using smaller forum sites such as whitsunday suggested is a useful investment for driving traffic.
I actually wrote about this fairly recently on my site and explored Google's attitude towards guest blogging as well. There is a video by Matt Cutts from Google explaining what Google do and do not want to see from this type of approach.

There's no perfect answer for everything. Some things may work, and then they may not. You keep trying until you find what works for you! Always use social media and you will be good!! I'm also on Quora....You advertise wherever you can,...as much as you think necessary! Much success!
I agree. There is no one-shoe-fits-all remedy for our industry. You know, I haven't really pursued social media as a means of marketing but I'm thinking that I might be losing out on a lot of traffic. You're not the first person who has recommended social media to me. Thank you
Well I like to publish articles to reddit, Digg, stumble upon and quora which are current forms of article marketing as are all of the regular social shares.

Thanks Janelle. I think I'm going to check out Quora. What has been your experience with that site?

There is a specific topic within my niche that isn't very popular no matter what keyword variation is come up with. I think it's important information that I should write but I
I would still go with it perhaps you can find related keywords that do a bit better and can soon add up
There are many ways to say the same thing. As there are many ways to write a title. I tend to keep digging in a keyword tool until I find a phrase that has the right metrics.
Alphabet soup and related searches are a start. You can try to rephrase the concept by asking a question, or adding words like How to, what is , top ten, the best ever, and so on.
Occasionally, it's OK to write a lower searched article, but it's not a habit you want to get into.
Herbert, since you consider that the information is important it is your responsibility to write the post! We are here to help our readers and do not fulfill our mission if we omit important information!
My advice is therefore that you write the post, and who knows, maybe this is what will set you apart from everybody else - since you provide the complete story
Cheers

Yeah that's exactly what I thought. It doesn't create high traffic but I do believe that it's imperative. Thanks for your input
