Blogging?!

I've read a couple of questions here from newer members like me who are asking about how to blog. And I could really relate to them. Not long ago, I was wondering the same thing. I had experience writing online articles for a few sites. But blogging seemed like a whole different animal. And it scared me.

Why? I think mostly because I was afraid of putting my own personal thoughts out there for others to see. What if someone disagreed with me? What if I got a negative comment? I also was unsure what to write about. How was I supposed to get ideas? What if I was boring??

I finally realized how negative my thinking was, and that it was holding me back. I also realized that the only way to break the power of those thoughts was to start blogging. So I wrote my first few entries, my finger hesitating over the "publish" button each time.

My first few posts were pretty timid. But they were me - my ideas, my thoughts in my own voice. And over time I've gained confidence to express myself.

Here are just a couple of thoughts for those who are still unsure about trying to blog:

1. Trust yourself. You have a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to share that others can truly benefit from. And you have every right to share it! Your unique style and voice will reach someone who will appreciate it.And you might start a lasting friendship, or end up being a mentor.

2. Have fun with it. Blogging is a way to connect and to encourage. So tell a story. Tell an experience you've had and what it taught you. Describe a funny or amazing or even troubling scene outside your window. Let your daily life be the spark that gets your blog going, and writing it will feel more personal and enjoyable.

It's easier said than done, I know. As someone who understands the fear, I say it's worth stepping out. You are amazing - so let your voice be heard!

Heather

Great post, Heather. This is really helpful to newbies like me knowing the difference of blogging to any other form of narrative writing. Thank you for sharing :)

If you have and inferior personality, unless you can get over it, you will have a tough time blogging your thoughts.

I am copying Barry J. He said it the best... Heather. Erase the fear from your mind. Remember, those that read your words are just like you. Whether they like your thoughts or not doesn't matter too much. They are people with a view of their own, and their opinion is just that; their opinion. They may be just as right or wrong as you, so it doesn't matter how they think of you. Just write your own thoughts. The one that counts is YOU.

Thank you Barry,

You're so right Barry! For me, shifting my focus from other people (or even myself) to the message is what frees me up to speak. And what you said about allowing others their own opinions and accepting their ideas as well as ours is HUGE.

My feeling is that some have too much fun with it. Thank you.

Hey Jovo, I'm curious what you mean by that - too many entries?

When you see 2-3 blogs per day from the same person, well...you know what I mean.

I sure do :)

Good thoughts Heather. :)

It can definitely be intimidating to put our thoughts, our words, and ourselves out there.
