Well, to descriminate based on gender is nonsense really because each gender covers such a wide range. There are some women who are more masculine than the average man, and some men who are more feminine than the average woman. And there are people who transcend binary ideas of gender. I consider myself one of those. When I was a teenager I would often get mistaken for female by people who didn't know me. This seemed to bother other people more than it did me, which says a lot about people's attitudes to gender.
But as I've got older, it's more a case of people thinking I'm younger than I am, which does annoy me. To be honest, I'd rather people mistook my gender than mistook my age. When people think you're a lot younger than you are, it feels very patronising. People treat you very differently if they think you're young, so that's a problem we need to look at too.
I probably have XXY chromosomes, which is actually not that rare. I've never had that tested, though. I'm not quite sure what the point would be. I'm in good health and prefer to just be the way I naturally am. The way I am is not a problem. It's our binary view of gender that's the problem.
Anyway, I know this isn't about me, but reading this just made me think about all that.
Hi Marcus!
Thanks for your comment - I really appreciate it!
Looks like you may have been "challenged" in the past in peoples perception of you, unfortunate, but I see you stand tall - excellent! But the thing is, it should NOT matter one little bit to people what we look like, how we dress, how we act (masculine or feminine), or even our sexual preference.
The marches that took place all across the US and around the globe of course, were about much more than that. We have gotten ourselves into a very peculiar situation with the Presidency and most Americans cannot accept Trump's win as a gain for anyone (... he lost the popular by more than 3 million votes!).
It would not be appropriate for me to express to you my true feelings about this "man" here, suffice it to say I stand opposed to not only his political beliefs but his character as well.
That's what this day was all about.
Yes, being the other side of the Atlantic it doesn't quite seem so real to me. Each news item featuring Trump almost seems like a trailor for a bizarre movie.
I can't help but think one of two things is true (if not both):
1) This is all some kind of distraction tactic to avert our eyes from much darker things going on beneath the surface.
2) This was a joke bet between rich businessmen that went wrong ("I bet you $1,000,000 I can get a lunatic elected as president").
But if this is all for real, rest assured that he won't be able to do even a tiny fraction of the awful things he says he wants to do. Even the "good guys" are never able to do everything they say they plan to do. There's never enough time or resources to get it all done.
But SOME bad stuff will probably happen, unfortunately...
Joanne,
We've made great strides but have so much further to go to achieve true equality. Thanks for sharing.
Erica
Thanks Erica!
... I'm in my 60's now, and never before have I felt more compelled to stand up for "right"!
Sisterhood has never been more important than now. I'm in my mid-fifties and have a 24-year old daughter. I've never been more determined to see change either!
That's so great to hear Marion!
I know Europe is "up in arms" too.
I just can't believe this had to happen in the first place.
Big sighs and outrage from most all here in the US.
Say some prayers. Thank you Marion!
