Packing of suitcases is an art ..

It's holiday season! Whether you go for a short or a long vacation, you'll have to carry stuff what can cause some stress. Main question is what you have to bring with you, and what not? Everyone knows the feeling of forgotten stuff to pack. Or finding out at your holiday destination that you bring too much, or just the wrong things. As regular business traveler I've gathered some handy packing tips:

Packing tips

A day before leaving please find out what you've put in your suitcase. Pick up each object and consider if you really want to take it along. Due to enthusiasme often too much is put in a suitcase.

Rolling up clothes works great, saves a lot space compared to folding. To keep clothes wrinkle free you can also put a paper towel or plastic wrap between the clothes.

Place your shoes along the edge of your suitcase, the sole to the edge and put rolled-up socks inside your shoes, to save space and to help them preserve their shapewhile being kept in your suitcase.

Fill the small gaps with underwear, small rolled clothing etc. Put hard stuff at the bottom of the suitcase (on the wheels).

Roll up your belt in your shirt collar so that the buckle is inside (tip from a famous belt-manufacturer in Berlin old-town at Hackesche Höfe).

Any other travel packing tips you have to share?

Have a great holiday!

Thank you for sharing this information with us. You are an expert in this area...and this information is so good for all that are thinking of or are doing some traveling... professionally or other wise.

It's my pleasure Linda! Particularly in this holiday season some 'professional' advice might be welcome. Your comment is most appreciated, Desmond.

If you are travelling as a sales person, always carry your sales kit with you on to the plane, in my early days I learnt the hard way, All my sales material disappeared in my case to who knows where, my sales trip was over before it began.

Yep John, there is much to be learned from such a loss. And unfortunately it's not just salespeople that learn from these bad experiences, Thanks for the tip, Desmond

As well as putting a label on your case, you should also put your name and home address - I always put this on my cases indicating 'in case of loss' So many times when travelling to the middle east, my luggage went to Bombay or Karachi, and if you move frequently it never catches you up

Great tip John! When your suitcase fails to appear on the baggage carousel, you're guaranteed a stressful experience filling out baggage-claim forms and futilely waiting. Thanks, Desmond

Great travelling tips, Desmond, I also love to roll up clothes before putting into suitcases. ;))

Thank you Jewel, most appreciated! Some additional info: women seems to pack the largest part of the holiday luggage. 60% of women pack the luggage of their husband besides their own luggage, according to a 2014 survey among 1,800 respondents.

Yes, you are right, lol. :))

Great tips I always roll my clothes comes from years around the military lol

Thank you Cathy, happy to hear! Never thought about you having a military background, so how wrong I was LOL ..

lol was not me personally just family and ex-husband still got brothers in that mode to

Hi, Desmond. Great article. I think you must have been in the military. I use some of those same techniques, but you have a few I didn't know and will now use gleefully. Thanks, J

Thanks for your positive comment Johann. I don't have a military background but as regular business traveler, sometimes just for 2 days abroad, I've to apply the most practical way of packing. Happy to hear that my tips are helpful. Desmond

Solid tips, thank you Desmond.
It made me think back about the years that I lived in hotels.
My packing was based on a 3 day washing routine i.e. 5 pairs of socks and underwear. 4 in my luggage, 1 set in my carry-on. You simply never know if the airline decides to fly your luggage to some exotic island...

It's my pleasure Ron. Good idea to keep a set of socks and underwear in the hand luggage, cause you never know .. Thanks for sharing, Desmond

Have as much less in your luggage, because you can buy what you need. Always take with you your luggage, it will save time, checking out through customs.

Good advice Nemira, I agree with you as long as you're traveling alone. However, an average family with two children travelling with hand luggage only seems not sufficient. Desmond.

Maybe. I saw one so adorable couple in Heathrow. Their daughter had teddy bear and mom with dad small luggages. Maybe their journey was short.

Nice tip Desmond,
My preferred method is :
1 look at pile to go into case.
2 look at case from all angles .
3 determine if pile will fit into case.
4 call girlfriend and promise expensive meal KFC. If she packs.
5 job done .get another beer from fridge ..
Everybody wins ha ha
Kind Regards
Bill

Great packing method Bill, in particular tip no. 4 & 5 captures my imagination haha .. Thanks for your comment, Desmond.

Hi despatis and thanks for the great travel tips . This pretty much the same theory I use when backpacking in the wilderness .

You're most welcome Paul! I thought that backpackers only bring their toothbrush? Just a joke haha ..

Desmond
