Major Online London Store has NO Security !

So it is coming up to Christmas. I am shopping on line. The stores I am shopping from are the major London Stores like Harrods and Fortnum and Mason and Selfridges.

Not Miss Selfridge may I add

I am shopping for a gift for my Beautiful Aunt. My dear departed Moms eldest sister. I always like to get her a quality gift. So it only seems fitting. As she Loves London as we are from the North of England. I shop online at the major London stores I. E Harrods. I could go to the main stores but I cannot stand the hustle and bustle, traffic and waiting in line to pay for my purchase.

{A 20-minute drive to West London can take a round trip of four hours. Parking is horrendous. Hence, I like shopping online. It certainly works out cheaper and is less stressful.}

I wanted that extra item for my Aunt. I couldn't find what I wanted in Harrods. I have made my purchase with Harrods and also with fortnum and Mason. I just wanted something like a cream scarf to go with the rest I have purchased. So I decided to look at Selfridges.

Now thankfully because I have learned so much from Wealthy Affiliate. I always check out my secure connections. I cover myself all the time when I am giving any of my details over the internet. Not only that as my beautiful Aunt is 250 miles from me in London. I have to give up her name address and telephone number. "That's for delivery". So I am always extra careful in what I do.

Now would you believe this absolutely massive London Store Selfridges has no secure connection on it's Website. It is a multi million if not a billion pound store. I have gone via its main website. I thought any minute now it will have a secure end to end encryption.

Well it didn't show up. There is no way I am going to buy from a store as big as that if they cannot secure the payment system and delivery instructions aren't secure neither. . Maybe they need to send their online website builders to Wealthy Affiliate to get some proper training in.

I am totally shocked at a company this big. Here is what they shout about at the end of their website.

:: Voted Best Department Store in the World ::
in the Global Department Store Summits 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018

Now all I can say is sort that Security out. Or get to Wealthy Affiliate for some proper training.

To be honest. Should I be speaking about a major London store here?

Yes because even a complete newbie from W.A. can do a better job. Just saying.

Incredible that a store with this reputation leaves a great big hole in its online security.
It just leaves any abuse to your bank or payPal to sort out.
Totally unacceptable!
Thanks for sharing
Terry

My thoughts exactly too Terry.

Its not on at all.

Thank you for passing by too.
Debs :)

It's good you gave folks a heads up on this situation. Also, good that you are so careful...thanks for telling us.

Hi,
Thank you Fran I was pretty shocked seen as it is such a major store.
Thank you for passing by.
Debs :)

WOW! That is horrible. I am glad you are vigilante with your information. Most people probable don't even look at things like that.
I would spread the word so others know.
Best wishes,
Dana

I will and thank you Dana.
Debs :)

Hey Debs, I noticed this too a few weeks back, I was so shocked, I even thought I'd stumped on a fake replica site until I realised it was the real deal.

As soon as I didn't see that green lock I refused to buy from them online.

I can't imagine how a company like that can't afford a few dollars to get their site properly secured. Hopefully they get it sorted out.

Stephanie

Hi, Stephane,

That's what I thought too. I checked the site from every angle and it still took me back to that main site.

To even think they done a docu/film on the UK Tv on The man who created Selfridge's Back in the early 1900's has shocked me totally how that site is not secure.

I was hoping someone from the UK would see too what I see.

Thank you Stephanie.

Debs :))

Debs
Good eye in catching that.

I echo MThompson's comment about contacting them and pointing to their big gaffe. I immediately saw an opportunity for you to maybe correct the mistake for them.

In order to do that, you must be diplomatic. You can't show your anger. You have to be a concerned customer who saw the insecure payment system and because of it, you terminated your purchase.

Of course, you don't want to talk to someone who can't make decisions. Get as high up the corporate chain as you can. At the very least, the head of marketing.

Who knows what might come of it for you?

Chuck

Hi,
I did try that but I simply didnt want to be left hanging on the end of my mobile line listening to them asking me and taking me from one place to another.

I have had that with my internet provider from an update they gave me. I so hate those calls. With talk talk.

I reckon I went from one manager to another in multiple countries and none was my own. It never got me any where. In the end It got resolved and what happened was a joke.

I just hope more than anything I put the cat amongst the pigeons. I will fire back at them tomorrow obviously in a polite manner. Lets see the outcome.

I don't want anything from it. I just know I am blessed already from all the teaching I have got from W.A. and have been taught in more ways than one to be on my guard. I count myself lucky.

Debs :)

Thank you for your response, Debs. It's nice to know that you took care of the matter before I made my suggestion.

Chuck

I havent in a sense and dealing with a company of that magnitude.
Scares the heck out of me I suppose.

I am still dumbfounded they can actually allow this. Which in all essence scares me even more maybe. I must have doubled checked a million times to make sure I wasn't missing things when I purchased of the sites Harrods and Fortnum and Mason.

I need to get some more stuff behind me and maybe buy something on a not so important Credit card and get the facts there even more so. Who knows but I totally get what your saying.

Yes your right keeping my cool is one of the traits I will need to deal with this. I actually never made a purchase but I may continue forward. Lol If I dare. Keeping my cool is an absolute must for sure. :)

Sounds unbelievable!!

Great to have spotted it, especially since it's two people's details you are giving them.

Thank you totally shocked to be honest but there is no way on this earth I am going to give out my Aunts Details she is in her late 70's she is a lovely well educated lady too bless her.

Let alone give out my own details. I would never forgive myself for my Aunt been held to ransom on scam calls.

I bought her gifts now with Harrods.
They come up 1 million percent secure and so they should. I will now sleep at night :))

Selfridges are not getting nothing from me at all shame on them.
Debs::)

Good evening Debs,

Unexpected and quite a shock. It would put me off from shopping there. Thank you for the warning.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

I am shocked too. I am checking alongside Harrods and Fortnum and Mason and they run top notch 100%. I have just purchased with them.

Selfridges online store certainly is lacking there for sure. It needs to sort it's self out. It should be as 100% good, as the other stores for sure.

Debs :)

Hi Debs

WOW - well done for catching that!

I have also lately (since being with WA), started noticing big companies that are not GDPR Compliant and don't have SSL.

We are so privileged (and I am so grateful!) for all that we learn here!

Call up their CEO, explain that you are a successful Online Marketer (which you are!) and tell them how much they may be losing by not being secure. Who knows what may come from that? ;-)

Wishing you a lovely day, Debs!
Sharlee (Chocolate IceCream)

Hiya, Sharlee,
I am totally and utterly shocked by it. I am actually wondering if its know by the absolute top of the company. There is always someone trying to pull a fast one maybe's.

I have tried to call them just now. I shall see what happens later or tomorrow. You know what shocks me more is.

The girl is telling me dont worry they have secure payments maybe she believes that but she is a call centre nothing more.

What if I didnt know Sharlee. People think I may make it up. I am not and it has thrown me too completely.

To be honest. I dont really want to take on a company that has been established since the 1900's.

Then again it might well be worth it. This should prove what I mean the grey scribbled out is my saved browser. When I go to add in my personal details and address etc and My aunts delivery address it's not secure.

I have just gone as far as payment and that comes up Norton Secure but before that all my details are now INSECURE and liable to be sold on the net.

Once I see they are not secure just by giving out my home address and delivery address. Just does not sit right with me.

I didnt have that with Harrods or Fortnum and mason. I am still shocked.

Hi Debs

An image does speak a 1'000 words, doesn't it? ;-)

I see in the image that it does say https://.... and the "s", is for "secure". If it was only "http://...", it would be unsecure.

The reason there is no green padlock, is because they have some faults on their page, oftentimes it is pictures that are not secure. They have to check why. So unless all their i's are dotted and t's are crossed (uhm, I mean secured), it won't display as secure. ;-)

If you search here in WA for "green padlock" or "SSL", there are quite a few trainings on how to fix that.

The other day I wanted to make a booking and the woman informed me that I should make the choices on the website. Well, it turned out there was no choices to make. So I called back and she got a bit agitated. Just as well I didn't let me be pushed over by this and insisted that she sign into their website, like I would, and tell me where I should find it. Turns out that their website (which clients are using), and back office (which she uses and which were suppose to be the same, as far as bookings go) are not the same. She was quite surprised to discover that after 4 years of working on the system and telling people to do what she just told me to do, can't be done.

So there are always surprises with the internet, one can never be too sure or too careful! ;-)

Wishing you a lovely day, Debs!
Sharlee (Chocolate IceCream)

Its the end to end encryption they don't have. Not only that it was on multiple pages. I am still unsure of such a big company shouldn't all that be in place. It rather confused me.

I have to be honest although the are not Harrods they are not far off. I often wonder why they slacking.

I would get better service at boohoo another retail store. Much cheaper.

This is top Store in W1 in London.

Baring in mind I could buy a Bulgari watch from there at the cost of £9.000+ one of the cheaper watches may I add.

So it really knocked me sideways in a sense. For that sort of cash I would expect a very good SSl and end to end encryption even for my details like email address and telephone number.

It just seems crazy to me. :)
Debs :)

Thank you Sharlee jeez I need the chocolate Ice-cream :))

Debs :))

Hi Debs

I guess I need to study much more, since I'm not sure what the "end to end encryption" is. I thought if it says https://.... that all is in order?

Yes, one would definitely expect only the very best security from them, since "security" is just another "product", right? ;-) [roll eyes] In this day and age in anyway.

I am going for the freezer myself right now! ;-) Enjoy! ;-)
Sharlee (Chocolate IceCream)

I get you totally hunni :)) For such a massive company imagine if we didnt have that W.A. that would be a big eye roll moment for sure.
Love you to the moon and back Sharlee and I am always team ice cream you know that. Well the chocolate side for sure. Take care hunni :)

Yum-yum - just finished mine! ;-) Take care Debs! ;-)

Lolz your the best ;))

Yes, I would find out more about that. It doesn't make sense a large company would miss on that.

I just refuse to shop there simple as. I am shocked they do not have the security in place. Such a massive company aswell. Mind you seems a lot of things are lacking nowadays. In the security sector.
I may even just email them. Lets see the outcome.
Debs:)

That is hard to believe. I would call them and tell them that you think they are losing business. No, tell them they ARE losing business by not being secure. Tell them you will fix it for them. lol
Who said WA training doesn't pay off.

Charge them an arm and a leg.

Make a living, make a difference.

MARK

I have the screen shots as its coming to Christmas and I am shopping today online. I have done Harrods etc with success.

I am just totally an utterly shocked. They may well be updating etc but they certainly need to get to grips. The only way I could really do anything is by shopping first and I aint doing that lol. Not a chance.

I aint fighting no major company neither the size of them.

Doesnt mean to say I can't blog about my disdain. Freedom of me and myself lol you get my jist.

I have even gone from the main site in Wikipedia whom I trust implicitly and it still comes up insecure. .
