Backlinks. How are they created without offending Google? Is the best way to create original articles and add them to your website? What about Web 2.0 properties? Where do they come in? The more and better backlinks you have, the higher you rank in Google until you hit the first page in Google and then the 1st result on hte first page. Result #1 get about 40% of all the traffic so it's good to be #1.

I thought that back links are bad.

Backlinks affect your Google rankings in the SERPS. Google ranks websites on a scale of n/a to 10. The more relevant it considers your website, the higher the ranking and the way Google decides what ranking number to assign to a website is via the number of relevant backlinks that point back to your website. Relevant is the keyword here. If you have a dog training website and it gets a link from an insurance website, Google will consider that not relevant and you will not garner any Google juice for that backlink and perhaps may get downgraded in the SERPS. Check this out: http://www.free-seo-news.com/newsletter586.htm. Bearing this in mind, Backlinks are significant for a number of reasons. Such as:

They can have both a bad as well as good impact of your brand, depending on the sentiment and relevance of the link. So, if the link directs to a page, which is of a low quality, this can then have a negative impact on your own page.
Just as users travel down links, so do web crawlers who help to index the web for search engines. Links are therefore essentially linked to drive traffic to your site.
Search engines can treat backlinks as “votes” by considering these links in context. Context includes the content on the originating page surrounding the link, including but not necessarily limited to the text on the link (called anchor text) and the title of the originating page.
All in all, it is clear that managing Backlinks is vital to ensure that your page is associated and regarded as one of high quality.

"If you have a dog training website and it gets a link from an insurance website, Google will consider that not relevant".

Why? Don't many dog owners have pet insurance to cover vet fees? I would expect most sites relating to dogs to have an affiliate link to a pet insurance company or have I misunderstood?

i too have heard negative things about back links. I need to read up on it more.

I'm not sure about all this either. Almost everywhere you look most SEO "experts" are saying that Page Rank, which is apparently determined by quality backlinks, hasn't been that relevant for years now and although backlinks still play a part, they only play a tiny part these days. The trouble is there is so much conflicting information it is impossible to know who is right and who isn't.

I have a site with 2, yes just 2, backlinks and consequently a Page Rank of zero, on it but several of my product reviews rank on the first page in Google and in general are still climbing. One of them today hit #3, above many sites with much more backlinks and therefore much better Page Rank than I have. What am I supposed to conclude from that?

The best source for you is Matt Cutts of Google

I am a Matt Cutts follower, Bill

Thank you for sharing the information.

I've heard so many conflicting comments on the web about the benefits of back linking. I know Kyle has some strong opinions so I'm anxious to hear from him on the subject ... I'm sure there is WA Training on it.

Seems like it is a fickle thing to satisfy google these days, Matt Cutt was saying they do not pay as much attention to back links unless they are really relevant thanks for sharing

Just a thought. Focus not on the domain ranking on google but instead focus on one page at a time or more precise good content that could be found on your page that is on your domain but also somewhere else. So start by finding a good keyword and then create something in relation to that keyword that is truly amazing (honest and true and relevant). Messure your content with other content in that area/niche. Is it good enough? Does it provide amazing value? If so then and only then I would sugest you look into how to get "the high ranking pages" (the kings and queens) in that field/niche interested in your quality content. And I would look at that more as a service to the market/community (a press release kind of telling them to check out what I belive is beneficiary for them). Content is truly king today and my experience is that Google actually could find you faster and give you a good rank before you have succeded with any link exchange strategy. This is not a 100% truth for every situation but it sure is true in many cases. For me the fastes way to rank today has been through creating content that is sought after by the market. Who linkes to it and where it is to be found has been of lesser or even no importance.

How is anything created without offending Google anymore? You cannot create backlinks by creating articles. That is a whole different thing. Think of Google as a castle surrounded by houses and no roads. You live way out in the boonies. You need to be invited by the king, or at least a bishop to the caste. If the bishop sends you an invitation, he then goes out and creates a road to your home. That is a good backlinck to your home. Now your neighbor invites you to his house and creates a road for you. That road is horizontal, and not of much use in SEO. The links or roads have SEO value if they head straight for the castle. The closer you get the more points google gives you.

Perhaps your approach is to use one of these. They will get you thousands of backlinks per day and Google wont like that:

Not sure what you mean, if you are serious or are teasing. Bought backlinks are always bad.
You must cultivate them with such things as guest blogging.
You definitely do not want thousands of backlinks either. There should be a basic balance of 50 outgoing to 50 incoming for SEO purposes

relevance is important...OleSkule,..a back link is a link to your site from another site which has been indexed by the search engines..they are seen as "votes" for your site, and if they are of the "do-follow" variety and from a higher ranked site, they sprinkle Google et al fairy dust on your site...
I have posted about how to find backlinks the natural way- in the past they have been bought by some grey/black hat practices and such links are now identified as being damaging to your site's credibility and standing.

Have a look at some of my posts for more info- and do a search on here for popular trainings.. Here is one for example:::https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/how-to-obtain-relevant-backlinks-part-2-social-bookmarking

best wishes, Andy

Excuse my ignorance, but what are "backlinks"?

They are links on other sites that indicate to your site .

No ignorance here, just a term you havent heard. A backlink is a citation in another website that points to a page in your website. It is a hyperlink and can be done in Wordpress. Google likes relevant backlinks. That means they want the backlink to have something to do with your website-be relevant. I use Market Samurai to see how many backlinks my competition has. It not only show me Google Rank but also Moz rank. Google ranking goes from n/a to 10 while Moz goes from 0 to 100. I also use OpenSite Explorer to check Google rank. The higher the rank, the closer you will get tp page 1 of Google. Page 1 is where the money is. If your website is not on page 1, it is nearly invisible to the SERPs and that means no traffic. No traffic, no conversions, and no money. Another tool is Ahrefs.
