I have just recently launched my site ww.thefutureisshort.com and I received several quite complimentary comments, including one from someone called 'colorsPa'. I replied saying

There is nobody here named colorspa. You can do a search by using the normal search bar at the top of WA.

Before accepting comments look for a URL to the left of the comment. If there is one and it leads to a spam site then don't accept it. Often spam will also be either really general "This is a great post" or it will make no sense (or both).

~Zachary

sounds like spam to me. My rule of thumb is if the comment doesn't leave any value to the article then it is spam. Put it in the trash.
also, Kyle made some training on the subject.

and then the other thing I didn't think of before now, is, that colorsPA could have genuinely left a comment in good faith but his/her site has been hacked and so clicking on their link led me to a completely other site. I don't know if that is possible? If so, I apologise to them for my subsequent reply telling them to get off my site and never come back. Its all stressful and confusing and worrying whether or not there really are some victims somewhere and should i be reporting it and who do I report it to. (I started following some 'report abusive sites' links but seemed to get nowhere real, other than a link to crime stoppers. Ill wait for Kyle's reply I think.

sounds like spam. Did you do a search here in WA for the name colorspa? This would tell you if they are a member with WA.

how do I do a search of listed member? Thanks

In the WA search bar at the top of the main WA page, type the at sign (@) followed by the name you're looking for. As you type the letters of the name, a list of possible matching members will appear. In this case, typing in "@color" revealed only one member starting with "color" named colorsplash.

Ask Kyle and Carson for advice or the technical support

Thanks Ric908,
I've sent a PM to Kyle. A message says that being the weekend response time might be slow, but that it will be read.

This is called the Google Dance. It happens to most new sites at one time or another. Keep adding content and it will recover. It may take a bit of time though.

Thanks Labman,
I've never heard that term before - "Google Dance". But its reassuring to know its 'something' defineable causing it and that it can be overcome with continued effort and time.
p.s the labradors look lovely. We had a beautiful lab when I was growing up. She was golden with a 'cowlick' twist of her hair right on the top of her head. Her name was Tess .. a very gentle soul she was.

I have one with a cowlick right across the bridge of her nose.

I just posted a long reply, but it disappeared!
In essence, I was wondering about the 'netiquette' of linking to (an article or news story by, specifically, free to everyonel) publishers, (i.e., does permission have to be sought or is it enough just to acknowledge their authorship ...AND, what, if anything, would such links do re Google's search engines ranking of my site?

I have my home page more or less the way I want it (except for footers, I think) but I want to start to get a consistent feel through all my pages and so wanted to experiment wi

My training here will help to get you started Barry

Type in you question for future reference in the WA space - Ask a question

Hi Rich908, Yes, that is where I was trying to put the term 'widgets' in - in that top-most 'searchbar' that asks you to type in a question (I din't put a '?' after it though, maybe that would have helped, but still that's not a standard search bar so much as an 'ask a question' bar. But anyway, as I mentioned a moment ago I have just found out (by accident) that if I type some extra thing "..........." or "xyz" etc and then use the backspace button to get rid of that extra thing it triggers the 'search' to begin!! very odd but it works and when I did that I saw the list of lessons which Kathy331 said was there.

got that sorted

Also, if you type "widget" into the search bar you'll find a ton of training. :)

hanks, Kathy331, but where is the "search bar"? (I don;t mean the add a comment bar here, but a search bar where I can search the site

I've shown it in this screenshot. :) http://screencast.com/t/miTxPd7RD

Kathy, for the screen shot, but that search bar (right at the top of page and just to left of aeroplane symbol) doesn't work for me. I can typ in it but when I press "enter" nothing happens (I've tried the star to the right and the other symbol - that looks a bit like a magnifying glass - on the left and nothing happens.

As you type the word in you'll see trainings and posts related to the word appear underneath the search bar, you don't need to press enter.
Does this not happen for you?

actually I've just discovered, by accident, a weird thing that DOES make it work.
I tried starting over again, by typing "widget" in again and must have put an extra letter in (maybe an extra "s" to give 'widgets' - I'm not exactly sure what I did) but anyway I just happened to use the 'backspace' button to remove the extra letter(s).
As soon as I hit 'backspace' the little black and green and blue bars that show that something is 'loading' began. So I tried it again, this time deliberately typing "widget ....................." and then the backspace to remove the "........................" and it worked again! The list of 'widget-related lessons appeared!
A weird solution but a solution all the same!

Lol, glad you got it sorted, its the best way to find blogs and trainings. :)

now it is happening, Kathy331, as soon as I start to type the drop down list appears - but that definitely wasn't happening before the backspace button thing occurred .... (like thumping the side of an old TV to make it work, hitting the backspace button seems to have jolted 'the process' into action. Oh well, I'll just add that to the infinity-sized list of things that don't really make sense to me in this life but which I somehow just muddle through!!

Soon I hope to try out where I want to put an affiliate link (on my website) back to WA. When I do that, is it OK for me to click the link to check it is working or does that mu

Just don't check your own AdSense - that's a no no and Google will let you know it. ;)

Absolutely never ever give out your AdSense links to anyone for any reason

Good advice, thanks Ekautz. I don't have AdSense, but if I ever do I will remember not to click. I think the advertisers have to pay per click so I imagine practise clicks would not be too popular

You got it Heather!

Great Success to you!

ROCK ON!
E

No you can go right ahead. You should check the link is working, you would be amazed about how many put in links that don't work. It will show up in your stats as one click, but that has a twofold advantage it allows you to check your link and stats are working

Thanks, for that answer, katkatskitchen.
I just had a look at your profile and may take you up on that offer to help where needed, but I won't just ask without trying to find the solution if I can.
Twice its happened to me - within this process of setting up my website.(and I realize that we are actually spoilt in terms of the amount of work that is already done for us) - that I have been absolutely stuck. But both times I finally went back and checked again every possibility I could think of. That worked well on the first problem I had, re a menu problem.
The second issue was resolved by accident. I accidentally clicked on something while I was hovering the mouse trying to decide and the problem just went away! (I'm still not really sure what I did!)
I'm quite desperate to get through all this initial process - including trying to get some content written in advance so that I have a bit of a head start once Ido start regularly writing for the site. I am anxious to see whether or not I really can earn a decent income (over time).

It is always better to try yourself before asking, not because it save you wasting other people's time, but because you learn more. However, there is a big learning curve here and if you ask in live chat you can get an instant answer which can save you pulling your hair out. If no one knows in live chat you can always ask in one of the classrooms! Don't be stuck because that is slowing down the day when you will make money

that's true about the learning curve. I see that as a very positive sign about this program. It is very substantial, not just another 'take your money then feed you waffle' deal - which is a very common business model I think with a lot of the others who try to sell 'learn how to make money' programs. I consider myself very lucky to have found this and yes it does help learning to try and work out a solution if possible.

It does, but it doesn't help to get stuck either when there is a whole community here can give you a kickstart in a millisecond
