Ugly site www.cbbabq.com that I'm looking to move to WordPress. Find myself obsessing over best WP theme to use.

It's the site for a local business networking group I p

I love the Virtue theme. When I started my site I spent about a month choosing the theme. I went through hundreds:) My priority was a clean, professional look which I think the Virtue theme does very well.

I'd recommend you combine a freemium theme like Customizr https://wordpress.org/themes/customizr/ with the Data Tables Generator plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/data-tables-generator-by-supsystic/

Divi from Elegant Themes and Thrive Themes are the most renowned Bill!

Wow there are so many...just pick a nice one that doesn't make you 'continue reading"...I hate those!!!!! LOL

Yes, it's ugly and it doesn't appear to be a WordPress website. I haven't seen (or at least noticed) a tiled background like that for years.

To change over to WordPress will take a bit of doing.

To get the tables you want you'll need a plugin. I use TablePress at https://marionblackonline.com/wordpress-courses/

As I remember the table created is not responsive, so having more than 3-4 columns makes no sense. Besides, it creates table separately, as a separate entity. The plugin was heavy, and there was paid (PRO) adition that made columns sliding under the first one, so essentially responsive, but again, people were saying it was very heavy.

I didn't think to check it on mobile Jovo. Thanks for reminding me. I'll have a look for another plugin.

Hey! I thought you were the guy who doesn't use mobile devices.

No I do not, but GA tells me half of my visitors do. I was using this plugin (if I did not mix the name) but removed after having a mess with tables in the dashboard as separate texts. Makes no sense, I have them at least 2 in every post, so imagine.

I need a table which can have 5-7 columns. Could not find any free light tool that creates tables on the spot. So I use my own hand-made, and have up to 4 columns, mostly 3.

If you add an image in the column, it is a rigid object and you can only add one extra column. Part of the problem is that I do not have a mobile and cannot test these things.

lol, me too :D

thanks Jovo!

No probs.

You BET you can Bill,

I find Thrive Themes true to their promises of being fully optimized. Using their themes, my sites have seen a BIG jump in traffic within WEEKS of changing over to their themes.

Hope this helps you.

Is this a paid theme? What is the meaning of fully optimized? Can you show one example of this theme?

How can traffic change due to theme, when people see SERP they do not know which theme it is. When they come, they are already there, so they can leave immediately if it is ugly or stay, but the number of visitors will not change, bounce rate can. Is it speed only? Did you register the change of speed?

wow Triblu, we all want to pick your brains on this :)

thanks for sharing your experience

Hey Jovo,

I have shared this URL so many times since I wrote it that I honestly thought that most of the long term members here had already read my findings.

However, here's the URL: https://useyourpassion.com/why-use-a-quality-wordpress-theme

LOL ... you're cute Mary ... here's the post I wrote about what I learned: https://useyourpassion.com/why-use-a-quality-wordpress-theme

Thank you Trish, first time to see it here and in the other thread from today, much appreciated.

No problemo' Jovo ... and I meant it went I said for you to "rattle my cage" with a private message if I overlook ANY question you ask of me in the future.

I read your article Triblu, thanks! Much to ponder.

Also I think Kyle and Carson have been working hard to optimize the platform to give people who use free themes with this hosting a little bit of an edge over people who use free themes hosted elsewhere.

I am beginning to really appreciate the ux these days of visiting sites with paid themes, that said, many sites have paid themes that are worse than the free ones, when I consider what my local businesses have been sold!

I wasn't condemning anyone's choice Mary. My post simply points out what I learned from using quality premium themes. I don't mention Thrive Themes until near the bottom of my post.

The paid theme I was previously using on my personal blog was more of a hindrance than a help ... which is why I changed it after only 3 or 4 months.

Not having stated my choice here to start a debate, but rather to simply responding to a member's question; it now it seems I'm being scolded for stating my choice. Yikes ... LOL!

condemning choice?? I didn't think you were either, there is some misunderstanding here

I was saying my local businesses in Ireland were ripped off being told to buy premium themes that looked worse than the free ones we can get so easily.

I'm not sure where you thought you were being 'scolded', I simply made a comparison between people's sites hosted elsewhere need a lot of stuff and that we are lucky with the hosting here

- it's good that you state your choice, opens the possibilities for people

Oooh good ... pheeew ... I really did think you were scolding me. LOL!
