An exciting find for my evening
Well, isn't this funny? Two blog posts back I wrote that I was waiting on Google to rank some of my latest posts. That still hasn't happened.
Tonight I decided to look into Google Webmaster Tools. When I looked at Search Queries I saw all kinds of interesting word combinations that aren't keywords I've targeted. Meanwhile, I didn't see most of the keywords I had targeted on the list.
My First Page One Ranking
So, I decided to go into Google and enter the keywords from several of my recent posts. As I did, I found myself ranked at #3 on one of my latest posts (including my picture). It wasn't my website post that was ranked, however. It was the version of my post that I had shared on Google+!
And Another
With that exciting news, I dug a little further. To my surprise, I found another keyword (cool baseball games) under which I am ranked #7. Again, it was the version I had shared on Google+.
Even more surprising was that I saw at #5 another WA member's photo. The title of her post was simply "Looks Cool!". I thought to myself, "How did she get ranked above me on my keyword when her niche has nothing to do with baseball?" So, I clicked on her link and discovered that this was her response to a post I had previously shared on Google+. Her "cool" response, combined with my post, got a ranking for "cool baseball games."
What This Taught Me
There's a lesson in here, though I'm not totally sure what it is.
Obviously, Google likes us to share our posts on Google+. Apparently, it also likes when we comment on shared posts, especially if we happen to respond with specific words.
So, from now on I will make it a point to look at G+ regularly and comment on some of the posts that have been shared with me. Who knows, I may be able to help someone gain a page one rank!

I'd read somewhere that Google was switching things up. Good for some, not so good for others. I'm glad it was in your favor.
Have printed out your blog for further research. You are on to something we all need to know about for ranking.

I seldom use my Google+, but it makes sense, because they are the masters of the virtual universe, That it would help ranking. I will make a point of posting & commenting more there.
I've noticed that, Allyn, that a lot of what ranks for me are my G+ postings. I make sure I always share to G+, even if I forget about the others. Good job!

Thanks Phil. Perhaps a little too much focus on this aspect but I'm trying to understand how Google ranking works, if that's at all possible.
Nonsense, you learn everything you can. Just make sure you can dumb it down for me when I can't figure it out. ;^)
Wow this is good to know about Google +. I haven't really started working on that phase yet. I do know that one night I decided to pick some key phrases from a page and was quite surprised to find this page listed under those phrases though it was not listed under the keywords of the title. So yes, sometimes we have rankings we are unaware of which is awesome!
Yes, I've found that also. It is strange that it misses the main keyword but picks up others.
I wish they'd let us know when they rank us under others so we knew we were getting ranked, lol
